If John Hughes were still making movies like Pretty in Pink, he'd surely find a place on the soundtrack for this young LA quintet. On their first full-length, Test Your Reflex combines yearning vocals, driving rhythms, and textural guitar work. They're a little U2 ("I'm Not Sorry" suggests "With or Without You"), a little Cars (Andrew Ampaya's keyboard playing evokes Elliot Easton), and a little Simple Minds (remember "If You Leave" from The Breakfast Club?). Vocalist Ryan Levine even sings with a hint of a British accent, a trait he shares with the Strokes' Julian Casablancas. The Burning Hour doesn't necessarily sound like a flashback to 1987, but it doesn't exactly scream 2007 either, and the band mostly cites 1980s influences: the Cure, Duran Duran, the Smiths, etc. That said, they also cite David Bowie and Brian Eno, but their music is more polished and less adventurous than those 1970s references indicate. The Burning Hour makes for an agreeable listen, but more grit and time spent with risk-taking records, like Bowie's Low and Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets would do these boys a world of good. In the meantime, they're sure to find a home on commercial radio and on primetime dramas revolving around unrequited romance. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

What a great album. Every track seems to conjure up memories of great songs from the past but with a present-day edge. Combine The Cure from the 80's and the modern-day band The Killers and you have a lot of what these songs sound like.

This one will be on my playlist for the forseeable future.

Absolutely Incredible!.......2007-04-26

It's hard to believe that this is TYR's first release. This is as polished and professional as it gets. TYR is a throwback to the bands of yesteryear, whose talents as musicians, songwriters and performers outweighed the effects of studio mixing and enhancements. The Burning Hour is a CD for all audiences, buy it, listen to it, love it!

On this album Bile's sound isn't as distorted as their earlier albums and you can understand more of the vocals. My favorite song would have to be Betty Page, other good songs would be sex reflex, rock is dead in bed, in league, double fang and when the dead come home. The only problem with this cd is that there are too many tracks that aren't songs but just noise. If it had a few more songs like the ones that I mentioned then I would have given this cd 5 stars.

From the insane "In League" to the slow yet still intense-as-all-hell "To Belong, My New Uniform", this CD kicks ass. A great introduction to the band if you haven't already heard them. But my copy is better, because I got it signed when I saw them live :)

BILE'S BEST RELEASE!!!.......2003-11-26

Sex Reflex is Bile's best cd. Dont get me wrong, all of their cd's are awesome but this one tops them all with the very catchy and hardcore "Sex Reflex". This cd is good for the perverts too...Every song on this cd is hardcore. My 3 favorites on this cd are: Sex Reflex, Betty Page and When The Dead Come Home...If you dont have/buy this cd, there's seriously something wrong with you!!!

Before Bob Brozman, ethnomusicology seemed to be left to guys who traveled around with tape recorders. Brozman takes that idea one step further by unapologetically inserting himself inside the music at hand, and in the past its made for eclectic and ear-opening listening when he's traveled through Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, Africa or Japan. Rather than focusing on a single influence, here Brozman makes a variety of connections by reflexively tying them to the blues using several models of National steel guitar (his axe of choice) as well as seven-string and Kona Rocket Hawaiian guitars, the Turkish baglama and even percussion. He's joined by a drummer on three of the 13 songs, but mostly he overdubs himself to fine effect or goes it alone with solo performances on a mix of traditionals, tunes by Charley Patton and Skip James and his own bluesy originals. This is one his fans will surely love, but the variety means it's not a bad place for the curious to start. -- Tad Hendrickson

Amazon surprises me!.......2006-02-14

This album came out in 2004 but was available only through Bob's site (www.bobbrozman.com). I bought it via mailorder back then. I didn't realize it was available here until last night when I was going to go back and review another Brozman album I haven't reviewed yet. I'm surprised this is here, but now I also wonder "If this is here then where are the other albums previously only available through Bob's site?".

Aside from 3 tracks with drums, this is a solo (with various overdubs) Brozman disc. To compare it to one of the others available at his site, this cd could be considered a studio cousin of Live NOW but with more texture due to the overdubs. I know sometimes people freak out about overdubs but there is no need here. There's nothing artificial sounding about this album. Bob plays perfectly off of himself. The overdubs just allow us to have that much more of a good thing... Bob's touch, tone, and rhythmic sensibility. Just to give you a sense of what I mean, here's the instrumentation (straight from the liner notes) for one track... Charley Patton's Poor Me.

Since this site doesn't give a tracklist, here it is... 13 songs and about 45 minutes long. Dead Cat on the Line, Rattlesnake Blues, One Steady Roll, Death Come Creepin, Vieux Kanyar Blues, Poor Me, Cypress Grove Blues, Little Tough Guy Blues, New Guinea Blues, It's Mercy We Need, Mean World Blues, More Room at the Edge, Workman's Song.

I love this album! The first couple times I listened to it I wasn't really digging it but I must have been having mental problems that day. Since then I love it. At various points it seems to expand upon other Brozman-related releases. If you have (from his site, not available here) Rolling Through This World, you'll notice one track here seems like it could be a great, lost (and found) track from that album. A couple tunes here show Bob's newfound love and admiration for the music of Reunion Island, and the catchiest song here (at least for me), Mean World Blues, shows Bob doing this great impression of Tommy Johnson, vocally! (Or I guess it could be his impression of the guy from the Mississippi Sheiks who also did it sometimes, but since I don't have any Sheiks as old as Tommy's recordings I've always assumed it was the Sheiks guy doing his impersonation of Tommy and not the other way around. Stop & Listen Blues No. 2 from the Violin, Sing the Blues for Me disc is a great example of the Sheiks guy doing his Tommy style). Bob does it over this great, jumpy little beat though. It's unlike anything Tommy utilized.

You get a bit of everything that is Bob on this album. His upbeat, percussive-styled guitar playing topped off with entertaining Vaudevillian (at least to me) vocals, as well as the other end... some slow, emotionally heavy, deeper stuff. If you like the music (he has changed the vocal style/lyrics completely, so I just mean the music here) of New Guinea Blues you'll want to get the Songs of the Volcano album. One of the bands on that album is the direct inspiration for the music on this track.

Of the "website only" albums he's released in the past few years, this, Live NOW and Rolling Through This world are my favorites. I'm still not a fan of more than a couple tracks of Metric Time. Also add in Ocean Blues as a great one. I love that album but it did used to be available here. Now I think it's only his site or the label's site. I'd think any fan of Brozman would love Blues Reflex.

Album Description

xrayok's debut album, Reflex, to be released in autumn 2004, is a lush blend of rock, pop and electronica. On the surface, Reflex might come off as a mix of up-tempo catchy songs with that overall "feel good" attitude. However, delving deeper into the haunting melodies and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, one discovers that there is definitely something else going on here. With the first single, "Happy Ever After", a real intensity builds with an onslaught of up-tempo grooves over spacey keyboards meeting raunchy, mood driven guitars. In "Uh-huh", a crescendo of guitars and distorted keys set against crashing drums builds into a glorious pop song, both heavy and dreamy in tone. This album is an excellent example of a group daring and yet skilled enough to explore different styles.

Mind Blowing!.......2005-04-27

Ive seen this band live many times. I just happened across them at a random local show and was blown away. I have never heard anything quite like them before. The closest thing that I could compare them to would be Kent or the Dandy Warhols, but they have something dark mixed in. All of the songs are bursting with energy and emotion, while the keyboards put out haunting melodies that entrance you. For an indie band's debut album, this one is better then you could ever hope for. Personal favorites include "no solution" and "symmetry". But for some reason most people like "novacaine"
