THE MIYUMI PROJECT
TATSU AOKI ~ MWATA BOWDEN ~ PAUL KIM
HIDE YOSHIHASHI ~ PATTI ADACHI ~ ROBBIE HUNSINGER A SOUTHPORT/ASIAN IMPROV NEW CD WORLD WIDE RELEASE "Somewhere in the great beyond, the ancestors are smiling over the coming together of traditions that "The Miyumi Project" represents..."
Lloyd Sachs, The Chicago Sun-Times SOUTHPORT and Asian Improv Records are proud to announce the World Wide CD release of its first project as sister and brother labels, Tatsu Aoki's "The Miyumi Project. The Miyumi ensemble includes members Tatsu Aoki, Mwata Bowden, Paul Kim, Patti Adachi, Hide Yoshihashi and Robbie Hunsinger. Miyumi is one of Tatsu Aoki's daughters. The essence of The Miyumi Project is the blend of Asian, African, Latin and European forms of musical and social expression. This tapestry of sound has its roots in the essence of rhythm and makes use of traditional and exotic drums and tempered instruments. It is true world music, from Chicago created in the present tense and constantly evolving. Over the years Southport Records and Asian Improv Records have formed bonds of music and friendship. Musicians from Chicago's Southport label, like Fred Anderson and Don Moye have and will appear with artists from San Francisco's Asian Improv label, like Francis Wong and Anthony Brown. Historically and musically, minority owned and independent labels have been lost in what has become so-called "commercial" music. With this bond, Southport and Asian Improv will try and spread the news of music, and the social condition. Band Members: Tatsu Aoki, Mwata Bowden, Paul Kim, Patti Adachi, Hide Yoshihashi and Robbie Hunsinger.

Product Description
Tatsu Aoki's re:ROOTED project is the culmination of a community based project exploring Asian identity and cultural integration through the sounds of the drum, and marrying traditional and unconventional musical instruments and forms. "Drumming is an oral tradition, passed up through the ages in many cultures. Tatsu carries on this tradition; a documentarian of life in the big village." -Lauren Deutsch, Executive Director, Jazz Institute of Chicago Featuring: Tatsu Aoki, Mwata Bowden, Francis Wong, Jeff Chan, Jonathan Chen, Hide Yoshihashi, Amy Homma, Ryan Toguri, Jason Matsumoto and Kazu Terashima. re: Rooted continues the concept of Aoki's 2001composition commissioned by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune called it "an eloquent, often dramatic merger of ancient Japanese music and experimental American jazz." Aoki has written, "Who we are is what we sound like, and what we sound like is who we are." On this recording, Aoki returns to the theme with a new configuration of The Miyumi Project to express this unique new form of the music: Asian American jazz. Tatsu Aoki - Bass, Shamisen on track 4, and Taiko on track 6 Mwata Bowden - Woodwinds (Baritone Sax, Bass Clarinet) Francis Wong - Soprano Sax Jeff Chan - Woodwinds (Tenor Sax, Bass Clarinet, Shinobue on track 4) Jonathan Chen - Violin Ryan Toguri - Taiko Drum, Percussion Amy Homma - Taiko Drum, Percussion Hide Yoshihashi - Taiko Drum, Percussion Kazu Terashima - Shinobue on track 4 Jason Matsumoto - Taiko Drum, Percussion on track 4Customer Reviews:

Tatsu Aoki's re:ROOTED Project, featuring special guests Jon Jang and Francis Wong
What do Korean rock musicians, Japanese Taiko drummers, Chinese folk singers and African-American jazz musicians have in common? They are all united by the drum. Tatsu Aoki's Re:ROOTED Project is the culmination of an exploration of Asian identity and cultural integration in three different communities. Marrying traditional and unconventional musical instruments and forms, the Re:ROOTED Project also blends the unique perspectives of older and younger generations of musicians. The concert features pianist Jon Jang and saxophonist Francis Wong.

Album Description
Rooted: Origins of Now The Miyumi Project Big Band Composed and conducted by Tatsu AokiThe Jazz Institute of Chicago Sound Archive and Recordings (CD Label Premiere) / Southport Records / Asian Improv Records (S-SSD-0092)
Southport Records in association with Asian Improv and The Jazz Institute Of Chicago presents the debut of the JIC's new CD label, Sound Archive And Recordings. Last summer of 2001 the JIC commissioned famed bassist/composer and producer Tatsu Aoki to compose and perform the selection Rooted. The world premiere of the 12-piece ensemble big band percussion project was within a regional city neighborhood (Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown) and at The Chicago Jazz Festival in the summer of 2001. This recording is the first in an ongoing JIC series of producing original music and also pulling sides from their lush history of festivals and events that go back in time to 1978.
Rooted traces the immigration of people from the Asian Pacific region to Chicago and other North American ports of call. In addition to melding elements of traditional Japanese music and avant-garde jazz, it finds rhythmic common ground in seemingly disparate styles. Included in the ensemble are AACM leader Mwata Bowden's clarinet and baritone saxophone, trumpet master Ameen Muhammad, vocalist Yoko Noge, violinist Jonathan Chen, young saxophonists Taku Akiyama and Toru Hironaka, trap drummer Mia Park, and four Taiko drummers (including Aoki). A true epic.
Bassist Tatsu Aoki is not only dynamic as a player, but is also the Executive Director of Asian Improv Records, and the international producer for Southport Records. Southport records continues it's tradition of recording and producing new music from Chicago to a world market. Media, we appreciate your support!
