Editorial Reviews
I started getting interested in music when I was a little girl living in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. My fondest memories are of the family sitting around the dining room table singing while my father played the guitar. I loved singing "Trio" music (romantic Mexican songs), the music of Agustin Lara, Guti Cardenas, Carlos Gardel and others. My father always told me I had a very good ear because I could pick up the harmony of any song he sang. We moved to the United Estates when I was 11 years old and it was quite traumatic for me. I was a little red headed Mexican kid that didn't speak English who's last name was Mac Farland! My friends would say to me, "oh, so you have a Mexican mother." I had to explain that the red hair did not come from the Mac Farland side of the family because the Mac Farlands were from Mexico, but from my mother's side of the family who were Americans from Oklahoma! My mother made sure I was enrolled in the choir at school because she felt that that was something I could enjoy in my new life away from Mexico. While in high school, my musical experience was singing with my friends while we walked home from school and playing the guitar that was given to me by my father. That's when we decided to learn a couple of Mariachi songs and sing them at an assembly in front of the school. That was my first public performance. What a thrill it was to be on stage with my three best friends and my sister, wearing authentic Mexican outfits singing with a Mariachi band. I graduated from college with a degree in Speech Communications and my plan was to be a teacher. After a short career in teaching and a longer one in management I placed all my focus on what really made me happy and in what I felt was my given talent. A friend of mine played a Billy Holiday album for me and after listening to the first song, "The Man I love" I was really moved. I didn't know who she was or what jazz was about. I just knew I loved it. I decided to get serious about music. That friend of mine is now my husband. I studied voice with Kevyn Lettau and music at Hal Crook's Jazz School. I started singing with Kevyn in Peter Sprague's band. That was such an exciting time because Peter always had the best musicians and the most challenging music. I learned a lot about Brazilian music by working with Peter. Another great teacher and musician was pianist Art Resnik. Five nights a week with Art, bassist Gunnar Biggs and drummer Billy Mintz! What an education! On that one year stint I worked with some incredible musicians including bassist Bob Mangunsson, guitarist Joe Diorio, saxophonist Charles McPhearson, pianists Randy Porter, Bill Cantos, drummer Duncan Moore and many others. It was a great place for musicians to come and sit-in with us as well. I learned so much from all of them. One time I went to a club in San Diego and heard this amazing guitarist playing with a great band. His musical sensitivity, the beautiful notes the guitar sang, and the chords he played moved me. When the opportunity came up, I called him for a club date and he agreed. That was about 17 years ago (that's why our company is called Cicada Musikworks). A cicada is a bug that lives underground and after 17 years it comes out of the ground and makes a heck of a lot of noise. That's what Steve O'connor and I are doing now, making lot's and lot's of noise, good noise, the kind you want to hear....MUSIC!
