Three discs into her acclaimed solo career, it's a no-brainer that the Brazilian pop charms of Bebel Gilberto will conjure a slew of beach-inspired adjectives. "Refreshing," "wind-swept" and "sun-kissed" spring to mind. Momento continues Gilberto's trend of crafting sultry scenes of afternoon delight via tunes that both adhere to traditions and sound ultra-modern. But she also mixes things up a bit in the process. Gilberto's sensual delivery--featured here in English and in Portuguese--hovers in and around each song, more an extension of the rhythms than the showpiece. Make no mistake, though: Gilberto's vocal work is a thing of beauty. She again blends bossa nova, samba, pop and electronica flourishes, but no one genre overpowers any other. Liliting guitars give way to pulsing percussion and horns, which crash against loops and samples. Gilberto coos amid the catchy club flavor of "Bring Back the Love," and the moonlit "Close to You" recalls Sade. The daughter of Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto even tackles Cole Porter's "Night and Day," recasting it as a hushed moment of bossa loveliness. And the title track is a collage of sonic secrets and memories. Perfect for a patio brunch--or an evening under the stars. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

It's no surprise that Starbucks is behind Brazilian chanteuse CéU's self-titled debut disc. (A co-release with the ever-tasteful Six Degrees Records.) The slinky, soulful sounds would be right at home amid mocha frapuccinos and lattes with extra foam. But CéU is more than a mere coffee-club cutie. Her sexy, assured vocals infuse every song with a come-hither vibe, from the playful "Rainha" to the simmering "10 Contados." The disc also showcases a slightly funky, urban sensibility; and electronic flourishes amplify the modern feel. "Vinheta Dorival" segues from standard guitar licks into gentle percussion rhythms. And a cover of Bob Marley's "Concrete Jungle" is elegant and effortless. Though originally released overseas in 2005, CéU's captivating collection still rings with truth and vibrancy. A truly caffeinated experience. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado." Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Getz fan. Getz, with his lyricism, the bittersweet longing in his sound, and his restrained but strong swing, was the perfect fit. His lines, at once decisive and evanescent, focus the rest of the group's performance without overpowering. A classic. --Fernando GonzalezCustomer Reviews:
It just doesn't get any better.............2007-06-30
There are conflicting stories as to how this recording, or, at least, Astrud Gilberto's part in it, came to be. At this distance in time, who cares? The late Stan Getz was said to be an unpleasant man. Who cares? He was, you see, a genius, who played the sax like nobody before, or since. Astrud Gilberto supports some political causes that I can't stand. Who cares? She's the prototype of a whole genre...another may be a little prettier, or have a little better voice, but Astrud is still "the original"; all others are copies. Music and politics shouldn't mix, anyway.
Here we have a collection of talent in one place not equaled till "The Blues Brothers". Besides Getz and Astrud, we have Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud's then husband, Joao. Great music, well played, and recorded to perfection. EVERYBODY needs at least one copy of this.

Riding at Full Throttle on Top of Bossa Nova!.......2007-02-17
The present CD was recorded in 1963 when Bossa Nova was the "new thing" mixing with Jazz and conquering USA.
Three geniuses, Joao Gilberto (guitar and vocals), Stan Getz (tenor saxophone) and "Tom" Jobim (piano and composer of eight of the ten musical pieces in the CD) join and mix their efforts to give the audience an outstanding performance.
On top of all that Astrud Gilberto sang "Girl from Ipanema" (she had never before performed professionally) and became instantly a star.
Sebastiao Neto bass and Milton Banana drums complete the musical team.
"Girl from Ipanema" make you feel being at the wonderful Ipanema Beach surrounded by the loveliest girls in the world (believe me, I've been there). Astrud's voice is just unbelievable.
I recommend hearing, enjoying and comparing this song's version with the one recorded in 1967 by Sinatra and Jobim.
"Corcovado" aka "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" evokes those wonderful starred nights from Rio de Janeiro, with all their sensual appeal, hearing soft guitar music. Getz's saxophone phrasing is just from another world!
"Para Machucar Meu Coracao" ("To Hurt my Heart" authored by Ary Barroso) is the story of a love affaire gone sour. Joao Gilberto's voice is able to express heartrending pain.
This CD is one of the Top Popular Music in my personal selection, tied up with before mentioned Jobim-Sinatra. I recommend it warmly!

A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes his tunes "Look Around" and "So Many Stars" are included. But this collection really surveys his interpretations of pop tunes of the day, some of which were never hits for Mendes. The small combo's light touch and rich vocal harmonies make for pleasant if kitschy covers of hits like the Beatles' "Fool On The Hill" and "Day Tripper," Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love," and others. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

While The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou movie got mixed reviews, the soundtrack was universally hailed as excellent. The standout was Jorge, who not only had a role as an actor but also played a handful of Bowie songs solo with acoustic guitar, singing them in Portuguese it was a perfect combination of beautiful songs laid bare with a bit of exotic Brazilian spice to add fresh flavor. This collection features the whole of that Bowie session, which means Jorge's six songs from the soundtrack, seven other Bowie tunes and one playful Jorge original entitled "Team Zissou." Even though 2005 saw the release of his domestic debut Cru (which mostly featured his own songs and a band), Jorge found himself touring the U.S. in front of large crowds of 20-somethings who patiently waited for those Bowie songs. This album obviously gives the people what they want, and the good news is that the other versions are just as good as the ones that are on the original soundtrack. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

It's hardly a stretch to say that Antonio Carlos Jobim--the wonderful Brazilian composer almost single-handedly responsible for all things bossa nova--influenced some of past half century's best and most insipid musics, from bossa nova jazz to elevator Muzak. Wave, a collection of 1967 dates featuring keyboardist Jobim backed by an extensive orchestra, straddles that line: it's full of amazing original compositions, but the arrangements have a certain faux suave, late-'60s lounge feel that reeks of stale cheese. The result is actually great, the veneer of kitsch insidiously masking Jobim's trademark immeasurable sadness, which creeps up on you and leaves you unexpectedly affected. --Keven McAlesterCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Her father may be the legendary Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto, but in 2000 daughter Bebel proved that she understands the bossa nova, too. There's a subtlety throughout this recording that makes Bebel's voice entrancing, as she re-creates the sensual essence of bossa nova before running with it into electronic territory toward the album's end. Tanto Tempo is an even-tempered statement that manages to showcase Bebel's own sexy voice while gracefully remembering the past. --Karen K. HuggAmazon.com
Daughter of the famed Brazilian pop and bossa nova singer João Gilberto, Bebel recalls her father's own classic recordings on Tanto Tempo, with a sure sense of pitch. Bebel Gilberto is hardly less charming for that, though, and the album entices with hushed passion. Relying mostly on acoustic instruments and some muted orchestrations, Tanto Tempo is nonetheless smartly paced to allow for some tasteful dance-club electronics to augment a few tracks, and ends on a celebratory note with "Close Your Eyes"--all but an invitation to Carnival. The current trend for things Brazilian should assure this disc a deservedly wide audience. Licensing it for the U.S. is another minor triumph for the fine San Francisco-based label Six Degrees. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

With the release of her debut Tanto Tempo in 2000, the Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto and the late DJ Suba redefined the bossa nova sound. Her sophomore effort, produced by Marius de Vries, the soundmeister behind Madonna, Annie Lennox and Bjork, was recorded in Rio, Bahia, London and New York. Gilberto's cool contralto sings sweetly over synths, strings, percussion acoustic piano and horns. Daniel Jobim and Pedro Baby contributed compositions. Caetano Veloso's "Baby" features lyrics by Os Mutantes, and Carlinhos Brown's candomblé-cadenced, "Aganju" swings with a nod to Africa. Bebel's hushed vocals reveal the influences of her father, the legendary Joao Gilberto, and of her mother Miucha on the electro-bossa beats of "Winter." Ditto the ocean-breezed "O Caminho," with jazzy orchestrations and pianisms provided by Joao Donato. This disc aims for the ear rather than the hips, but don't be surprised if future remixes could flip that sonic script. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:

Famous First Daughter Sings Again.......2006-06-22
"Bebel Gilberto" is softer;yes,it's different, but doesn't make it worse.Only different.Joao Gilberto's famous daughter is doing quite well on her own terms.
Highlights-
1)Aganju-Very jazzy. No wonder it has its own single of remixes. It's quite danceable.
2)River Song-Very flowing.
3)Cada Beijo-Bebel is best when she sings in Portuguese.Portuguese is a musical language.
4)O Caminho-Another great Portuguese song.
5)Ceu Distante-Very good.
6)Jabuticaba-Bouncy&frothy.This was recently featured on Putumayo's World Music Hour.No wonder. It's catchy.
Bebel Gilberto does great again!I'm glad I got this.

Album Description
Riotous Brazilian MC and DJ three-piece Bonde Do Role play baile funk - a flippant, punked-up take on Miami bass developed in Rio's favelas - and yet aren't from Rio. A characteristic of baile funk is its playfulness and mash-up guerrilla-style sampling. Grunge, heavy metal, and cheese were added to the melting pot here. Their SXSW appearances were the talk of post-festival blogs, described in many instances as a "Brazilian Beastie Boys" with their explosive performances and filthy lyrics.International Music:
