Sheila Walsh: Good all around CD.......2007-02-19
This is a thought provoking CD with a lot of great songs. I wish Sheila would choose songs that make her voice sound good and not just good songs.
All in all it is a good all around CD to listen to when you are resting, and when you are in a contemplative mood.
Inspiring!.......2007-01-04
This CD Touches My Heart.......2006-03-13
As a fan of Sheila Walsh, I'm a little disappointed with this release.......2005-08-19
The entire recording consists of popular inspirational and praise and worship songs and one hymn medley ("My Faith Looks Up To Thee/Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty"). The problem is that the songs are not that distinct.
A couple of notable exceptions are the Twila Paris song "God Is In Control," which has lyrics that are especially relevant for today, and "Amazed." Jerry McPherson adds tasteful guitar licks on the first song, as he does throughout the recording, and pedal steel guitar, which is also part of the mix, doesn't sound any better than on "Amazed." Sheila really makes these songs her own and gets great backing vocals.
Unfortunately many of the other songs are just good versions of the originals. If you already have them, there's not a strong reason to buy this record.
Not too long ago I read that part of one person's wish-list was a longing for the old Sheila Walsh. While I might wish for the same with some qualifications-I have no desire for the spiked hair, rock days-I would like to see her do more along the lines of the delightful British-pop on "Again and Again (You Are)," heard on Love Falls Down. That recording along with Hope and Blue Waters are better choices if you want to experience Sheila Walsh at her best.
It's also a little misleading that this is advertised on the back cover as having "captivating Celtic melodies reflecting the Scottish homeland of her childhood." The only obvious Celtic sound is heard on the title song "You Raise Me Up." Hope and Blue Waters are much more Celtic.
There's no denying that Sheila Walsh has a powerful testimony and is incredibly talented. She speaks and sings at Women of Faith Conferences, writes books, is the former co-host of the 700 Club, and knows how to connect with people.
She is able to do that because she has a tender heart, which comes through in her music. "You Raise Me Up" is a good collection of songs, and it probably does reflect her feelings to some degree, but it falls short because it's mostly familiar.
Sometimes I think the modern trend of praise and worship music has stifled creativity. Many of the songs are simple and repetitive. There's not as much depth musically and lyrically. It seems that for some time now, the same songs keep getting repackaged. At the very least, I would like to see mostly new songs on praise and worship recordings. I appreciate artists like Chris Tomlin, Hillsong and others who labor toward that end.
I guess I too would like to see a little of the old Sheila Walsh. One of her older recordings had a great song called, "Angels With Dirty Faces." It had thoughtful and compelling words and music. We could use more articulate and captivating expressions of faith. Songs dealing with more complex music and themes are just as valid as "praise and worship" and can also connect people with God.
Sheila Walsh has been through a lot and come out the other side. I hope that in the future her songs will reflect a little more of what she is seeing at a given point in time. I would like to see a batch of new songs like "Again And Again," and "Angels With Dirty Faces." I could go for a recording like that.

Based on the concept of healing in times of crisis, Streams combines the talents of contemporary Christian music heavy hitters and the Irish Film Orchestra (who contribute a lavish orchestral suite) in an anthem of comfort for the weary, the hurting, and the spiritually impoverished. From Cindy Morgan's broken-voiced lamentation on "Job" to Chris Rodriguez's plea on "Sanctuary," Streams speaks directly to Christians in times of need, a subject not oft explored in CCM. Brighter territory is surveyed on Sixpence None the Richer's inspirational pop gem "Breathe" and on Jaci Velasquez's breathily angelic rendering of the Michelle Tumes-penned "I Will Rest in You." Intriguing pairings include Jon Anderson of Yes with modern-day soldiers of faith 4Him, Amy Grant's supporting tour of duty on the Delirious-led "Find Me in the River," and a slightly revised version of Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up," which features a duet by Irish songbird Maire Brennan and Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:
This CD is a blessing .......2007-03-20
Best of All Time?.......2006-10-10
The album is so hauntingly good, it'll take your breath away. Maire Brennan and Michael MacDonald in "Don't Give Up" is encouraging at deep levels of the soul. 4Him and Jon Anderson on "The Only Thing I Need" can make a grown man cry. Breathe from Sixpence None the Richer reminds us of the breath of the Spirit sustaining life all around us.
None of the songs are fluff. They all acknowledge the dirty difficultness of life. There is no white washing of the hurt and pain we all have to come to terms with. But in the songs, as vast as the ocean, we hear of abiding, towering strength, hope and trust that, in the end, everything will be made all right again.
Best of the Best.......2006-01-18
A song for every mood...Essential Christian listening!.......2002-05-19
The most special track on the album for me though, has to "I will rest in You" by Jaci Velasquez (though Michelle Tumes' penwriting skills are obvious throughout - I'd have love to have heard her sing it). I had this song played at my father's funeral after I had read from John 14:1-6 and paid tribute to him. It melted the congregation and will always have a very, very special place in my heart because of that. A truly amazing complilation that can speak to your soul. Don't miss it....

With contributions from Uillean piper Liam O'Flynn, Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler, former Skara Brea singer Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, harpist Patrick Cassidy, and country singer Ricky Skaggs, the fourth in Windham Hill's Celtic Christmas sampler series is a varied and somewhat austere collection of winter ballads and yuletide airs. Guitarist William Coulter turns in a lovely arrangement of J. Scott Skinner's "Cradle Song," while harp and mandolin player Lisa Lynne, backed with bouzouki and double-bass, performs the two-beat "Morning Star." W.G. Snuffy Walden's lyrical "St. Stephen's Green," with added guitar by Dean Parks, sums up the album's moody yuletide sentiment. A Christmas to reflect and relax. --James RotondiCustomer Reviews:
Scaggs is fine, get over it!.......2006-12-12
If anyone out there hasn't heard Vol I, II and III you really should but you might OD on traisping through the highlands, that's why I like Ricky.
Soul-lifting, but not your average Christmas album.......2005-12-18
It is pervaded by a Northern Christmas atmosphere that is unmistakeable, and brings to mind the snow-covered flatlands kindled with the small distant lights that go with the image.
(Although to a Mediterranean Roman Catholic as myself, it is quite obvious that Jesus Christ was born on a cool but definitely not snow-ridden night in Palestine)
I totally disagree with previous reviews on the last two tracks. "Kitty Magennis" is a tune by Turlough O'Carolan that has nothing to do with Christmas but in this setting by Patrick Cassidy acquires a certain spirit that makes it fit for the context. And "Christmas Time's A-Comin'" is a beautifully humorous contrast with the rest of the album.
Thoroughly enjoyable, in our family it is one of the two pillars of our Christmas season, together with another album which I highly recommend: Tuck Andress's "Hymns, Carols and Songs about Snow".
Down with "Kitty" and "Ricky"!.......2005-12-12
are the "wild cards" popping out of the pack and do NOT belong on this CD! I greatly enjoy Maire Breatnach's "Derdriu," which is almost Appalachian-sounding in my opinion. My favorite cut is the poignant "December Rain" by Brian Dunning and Jeff Johnson.
Skagged!.......2002-09-13
"Kitty Magennis" seemed too bland and didn't have anything to recommend it. The presence of the Ricky Skaggs song felt like an attempt to make the CD more "Christmassy." Its inclusion in the collection felt like an afterthought or a "throwaway" cut.

Don't even hesitate to Own your own copy.......2004-05-31
The only thing that is hard to understand is why the Maranatha Music hasn't offered any music arrangements for Celtic hymns. Unless they are planning to take the music with them on the road, they would probably reap quite a lot of benefits (financial and otherwise) in making them available to Churches everywhere. Attempting to contact John Andrew Schreiner and Stan Endicott at Maranatha Music is a real exercise in patience building........

Every track a winner! Did I say "every?" Well, I meant it........2003-01-12
If you don't know the hymns and their lyrics you will still enjoy the music. If you do know them, you may find yourself worshipping... and that's not a bad thing to do. He is worthy.
I am touched by each and every song but was most moved by MY SAVIOR'S LOVE. (no pun intended) There is something about the words which brings hope and joy to my soul and the musical arrangement matches it perfectly. May you be moved as deeply.

Title a little misleading - but overall it's pretty good.......2006-01-05
The instruments used are as follows:
Bass Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, Classical Guitar, Wood Flute, Hand Flute, Hammer Dulcimer, Keyboards, Percussion, & Violin
Despite the fact that all you get is a collection of hymns and not authentic celtic music, I enjoy this 3 pack album. It adds an interesting twist to many of the old hymns! If you know ahead of ordering it, that it's not really celtic music, you can enjoy it better and won't feel cheated - that is, assuming you like the oldtime hymns!
Not Celtic, not good anyway.......2004-10-01
I wouldn't really call it country, either. It's just straight hymns, done in a mediocre manner. The singers aren't spectacular; the arrangements are boring. I can't think of a single reason why anyone would want this CD.
Hymns, like classical music, are generally less expensive than other albums. So it's really not even a good deal on hymns, and most other hymn CDs are much better done. Plus by buying another album, you would know it's done in a style you like!
This is a total gamble. I strongly encourage you to avoid it. I think they packaged it as 'Celtic' just because they know Celtic things sell, and theirs had no merits of its own. And opened CDs are almost impossible to return. It sure seems purposely dishonest! I don't like supporting sneaks.
Not Celtic but COUNTRY.......2004-03-31
I will continue to play the CD's because I love the hymns and the music is mild and well done.
