5 out of 5 stars Amazing (+ obscure?) Krishna Das.......2007-05-02

Wow.
I was skeptical when Krishna Das and Sultan Khan put out "A Drop Of The Ocean" a couple years ago-- I didn't want a cameo by KD to sell an otherwise weak album (I wasn't yet familiar with Sultan Khan). I got the CD, eventually, because it was on sale at a local used CD store. Of course, I was stunned by that albums beauty, depth, and grace.
"Invocation" is like the follow up to that album for me. I only vaguely recognized Ty Burhoe's name from seeing it in the credits of other albums (Incl. Drop of the Ocean) but, playing the album, it carries the unmistakable power and dignity of any of KD's music, transcending categories like "New Age", "Indian Classical", or "Kirtan" and becoming something new unto itself. Thank you *so* much, Ty!

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24

This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.

The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.

The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.

The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.

The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.

The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.

The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?

The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.

The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.

The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.

Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.

Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2007-03-17

Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.

Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.

2 out of 5 stars Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies.......2006-05-10

Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

3 out of 5 stars haunting yet empty.......2005-10-19

It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

4 out of 5 stars Ethereal beauty.......2005-07-29

This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

5 out of 5 stars Travel in Time with Ensemble De Organographia.......2005-12-13

To hear the music that maybe Alexander the Great or Julius Ceaser (or even Jesus Christ) had heard - it`s a miracle! And this re-creation of antique music sounds most lively and sincere for me (comparing with record by Atrium Musicae de Madrid). You could understand the ancient culture through spirituality and emotions of the ancient people. Philip Neuman and Gayle Stuwe Neuman play the music on the instruments re-created by their own hands. Ensemble De Organographia performs it in very colourful manner, so you could listen to this CD as to record of live folk world music, not as to dry academic experiment in archeology of music.
Ensemble De Organographia re-created even Sumerian music. Their CD "The Music of Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians and Greeks" I also highly recommend for the lovers of the ancient music.
You could find both CDs on www.northpacificmusic.com.

5 out of 5 stars In some ways, even better than "Musique de la Grece antique".......1999-07-07

This recording is at once more complete in its textual basis, more clear and bright in its production, and in many cases better performed, than the earlier recording "Musique de la Grece antique" by Atrium Musicae (Harmonia Mundi CD -- also sold by Amazon.com). It is a superbly done, even haunting recording. But though Gayle Neuman has a beautiful voice, she is but one singer -- and I miss the richness of the instrumentation and the vocal variety found on the earlier recording. But you can't beat the liner notes, or the photo of the instrument replicas that is included with the liner notes.

I find it fascinating that Philip Neuman & Co., in reconstructing the original instruments for this recording, came up with very nearly the same tone colors that Atrium Musicae did with their reconstructions. So far as I know, there was no collaberation between the two groups -- least of all in their approaches to the ancient music. The Neumans and William Gavin sought a quasi-archaeological "authenticity"; Atrium Musicae, to infuse new life into the music through their own spirits. Comparing the results is like comparing the arrangements of the same song, "My Heart Will Go On", performed by Celia Dion and Kenny G: they seem alike, and yet very much unlike.

5 out of 5 stars Field Craft.......2004-11-18

Micky Hart is exposing a lot of people to what was once called field recordings. I am down with that! And he is fortunate to have the conduit that enables him to carry on his passion.

I was able to go to Africa on several mission projects and believe me, I know the excitment he is enjoying by bringing the listener into the root of percussion.

Drumming is akin to exploration... it never ends, the deeper one gets into it, the deeper it gets. Think of the concept of folding space or wurm holes. It is a profound mental and physical experience.

But as my nom de plume suggests... I'm a bassist. As a percussionist with a string to pluck, my study into percussion has enabled me to become a much better bassist. For that I am deeply indebted to the drum, and will remain an ardent searcher into the realm of the monophone. Thanks Mickey! Your research and network is expanding the vocabulary of many. We are listening.

5 out of 5 stars Great Rhythms.......2002-01-08

This CD features Babatunde Olatunji at his best. Some people may be familar with Olatunji and his style, but this CD is very different from the music he usually performs. It is more primordial, spiritual and emotionally charged. The music on here is an invocation to the Orshas, the Yoruba Gods, who were trnspoted across the Atlantic where their followers formed the religions of Santeria, Candomble and the like. I found the invocation to Sango (Shango in the Carribean), the masculine Orisha of warfare, storms and fire, to be particularly moving. The emotion with which Olatunji performs on this CD is amazing. I am impressed with this CD. It is very moving, but I also must remind you that the music on this CD does hold considerable religious significance to the Yoruba people, and as such deserves a good deal of respect.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27

This recording is arguably one of Sondheims greatest! The Frogs, which appears here with a brilliant cast (Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell among others) is one of Mr. Sondheims oddest pieces of theater. Although it was recently revived on Broadway with a new book by Mr. Lane and that recording is probably better, the entire first half of this recording (which is The Frogs) is brilliant for nostalgias sake and for the amazing expierence of the music itself. Mr. Sondheim has created such music for The Frogs! Very grandiose and stunning!

But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!

The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

2 out of 5 stars Can I sell it On Ebay!!!!.......2005-06-01

Contrary to other reviwes posted I will tell you that the Evening Primrose on the Mandy Patinkin Cd "Dress Casual" IS the "Primrose" to own. This one was in my opinion under acted and undersung. While Mandy Patinkin is always over the tip, Ms Peters is one of the best Interpreters of Sondheim's works and the orchestration on this is much darker and deep, like the subject matter of the piece. I found this whole CD lacking, given that just like the "Dress Casual" I bought it only for the "Evening Primrose" selections. Thank the GODS for CD Burners so I can compile my own best of Sondheim CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15

I find the Evening Primrose here much better than that on "Dress Casual." Firstly, because the two performers--Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy--are both amazing singers. Also, because both of these performers are younger and thus, their voices are more "youthful". For this musical, in particular, "youthfulness" is important; Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are simply to mature to effectively do these parts. I find Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, absolutely superb, and his version of "Not While I'm Around" (on the NYP Sweeney Todd recording) is far and away the best I have ever heard (except for LuPone's dismal British accent). This Evening Primrose alone is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing........2004-02-17

>The Patinkin-Peters version of "Evening Primrose" is in Patinkin's "Dress Casual" CD, the studio recording that became the basis of his Broadway concert. I believe this was the first time all four songs were recorded.

Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2004-01-31

If you're looking for the Mandy Patinkin "Dress Casual" CD (as an alternative or supplemental "Evening Primrose" recording), note that Amazon has it listed, for some reason, under "classical music".

There is much more to Holst than The Planets, and the music gathered on this excellently played and recorded disc gives you some of his very best orchestral music at a budget price. If you're a Planets fan, then the next logical piece to try is Beni Mora, a luscious Oriental rhapsody in three movements that reveals the same interest in rhythm and orchestral color that characterizes it's more famous astrological big brother. Holst considered Egdon Heath (a symphonic poem after Thomas Hardy) to be his best piece, and it's certainly one of his most evocative--a study in bleakness and silence very much like Debussy's Nuages (Clouds) from the Nocturnes. In short, there's a lot of fine music to discover here, and at the price it's a low risk investment. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Holst CD Not To Be Missed!!.......2004-01-12

The other reviewers here have correctly given praises to David Lloyd-Jones and his excellent English orchestra for their fine, affordable performances of Holst's lesser known orchestral works. Lloyd-Jones is a fine, sensitive conductor who expertly shapes and conducts each piece, eliciting expert sounds and music from the orchestra.

The "Fugal Overture" has some very interesting tone clusters in it. It is a short piece, and it showcases Holst's eerie, fascinating sonorities quite well.

"Egdon Heath," considered by Holst himself to be his finest work, is a dark, brooding piece that haunts the listener. Lloyd-Jones and the orchestra capture these moods perfectly.

My personal favorite on the CD is the "Beni Mora" suite, Holst's brush with orientalism. It sounds somewhat like the orchestral works of Borodin at times. The drone in the last movement is really catchy (Holst heard an Algerian native intone it for over two-and-a-half hours!!).

Tim Hugh plays the "Invocation" with beauty and expression, receiving great support from the orchestra.

If you would like to augment your Holst collection, you should purchase this CD. I would recommend it even at full value!

5 out of 5 stars " Nax-HOLST " . . ........2002-05-29

Holst: Orchestral Works [Naxos 8553696]

A wonderful cd program with Lloyd-Jones conducting a competent orchestra. The choice offers some lesser-known compositions by the man who brought the 20th century with great music, such as the original Suite 'The Planets' and the 'St.Paul's Suite'. To my knowledge, there aren't that many recordings of these works. Thanks to Naxos some fine pieces are made available again to the public.

For the orchestration of a version for two pianos of his 'Planets', Holst (who died in 1934 due to health problems) has had the helping hand of two fellow faculty members at St.Paul's School : Nora Day and Vally Lasker (renown as pianist, arranger and teacher, both have worked closely with the composer). Lasker has been in touch with some of Holst's smaller works as well, and she did collaborate with Ralph Vaughan Williams, among others. Here and there, the influence of English folk tradition is striking : Is it a bequest from the folk song collecting outbursts of the early 20th century---led in England by Cecil Sharp---or a souvenir of the "Field Days" with Vaughan Williams? The folk idiom is particularly obvious in 'Somerset Rhapsody' and the 'Fugal Overture'.

You can almost walk through the soothing pastoral peace of the English countryside and smell the air (around the instruments!) when listening to the small but worthwhile pieces from this cd. The 'Somerset Rhapsody', the bold 'Beni Mora' and the typical beauty of 'Egdon Heath' (which Holst's colleagues and friends have welcomed with much praise) are part of the musical travelogue ; every minute of the program is pleasant---not much complaint about the playing, very good if not excellent on the whole. The orchestral elements were developed meticulously---as it seems to me---in respect to the nuances, phrases and colors of that genuinely charming British music. David Lloyd-Jones is virtually remarkable in his role of conductor. The music exposes a facet of Gustav Holst's musical persona ; it seems analogous to some works by Finzi, Bax or VW. Those orchestral works are also quite different from the Eastern-influenced or more "mystical" compositions (the operatic work 'Savitri', for instance).

Again, this is a very good album albeit not entirely blameless : Richard Hickox on Chandos (CHAN 9270) brings a strong challenge, although i wouldn't venture to say which one is clearly the better. Sir Adrian Boult (on Lyrita, SRCD222) is aptly regarded as a paragon in that specific repertoire. However, considering price versus quality of performance (plus quality of sound), this cd is a laudable bargain, and it inserts a couple of works which were not included on the outputs of Hickox and Boult.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant compositions by Holst!.......2001-01-13

This magnificent CD reveals that the great British composer Gustav Holst was no one-hit wonder. Holst's peculiar talent for making epic statements in any musical setting and in any musical length is much in evidence in this collection. Featured, in part, are the wonderful 1909-1910 "Beni Mora" suite, an "oriental" exercise in minimalism that renders modern efforts in the same vein beneath consideration; the 23rd-century-sounding 1923 "Fugal Overture," with its astounding orchestration and uniquely overlapping counterpoint; and the 1906-1907 "Somerset Rhapsody," featuring folk-song quotations and composed at the prompting of Cecil Sharp. These are enriching and challenging pieces, very well performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Once again, the Naxos label has provided a superb product at an unbelievably low price. They deserve our business!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cantus has done it again!.......2003-12-07

Cantus has done it again with ...Against the Dying of the Light. This CD although much more secular and sacred, still demonstrates the power of music through singing. This album takes the listener back to some the very roots of choral music with compositions dating back to fifteenth century. Cantus brings out all despair and joy of the texts in ...Against the Dying of the Light. Although most of the pieces are sung in Latin, a story of greif and sarrow to consolation and joy is clearly told. All avid choral singers must have this CD. The "Two Laments on Dylan Thomas" are simply profound. You will not be dissapointed with this CD. This male choral group is second to none!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-12-31

As a vocalist with a love for male a cappella, Cantus has struck my fancy in numerous ways. This album is a WONDERFUL example of their artistry. Their rendition of Randall Thompson's Alleluia is stunning, as are all of the other tracks. Truly worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars early christian music.......2007-04-19

Great music this is the music practiced in the early centuries of the Church, before the western church destoryed a lot of it.This is so emotionally it energizes you to praise God. They did a great job reconstructing the chants Great Buy

4 out of 5 stars Mozarabic Chant - Emphasis on ARABIC.......2006-03-25

I'm sure other reviewers comments about this work and generally about Mozarabic chant in general are true. Christianity originated in the east and Mozarabic chant's less polished, austere qualities most likely resembles ancient christian chant. The quality of the work is unquestioned.

But for a person whose hearing sensibilities have been so influenced by western gregorian chant, the heavy arabic influence in the music may prove a hard listen for the western ear.

You definately want to listen to the samples before purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Byzantine Chant in Latin/Latin sung in Byzantine Chant.......2001-09-07

It is Byzantine Chant sung in Latin. Think of Latin hymns sung by a Byzantine soloist, two or more singers, or a choir. Lycorgos Angelopoulos is a godsend as he finally sings the Latin hymns right because I have always wondered what the Latin would sound like sung by somebody with a thick Greek accent. This recording is similar to other recordings by the Ensemble Organum. The melodies are characterized by an ison(drone). Marcel Peres also does a fine job of singing Byzantine Chant in Latin even though he is not Greek. To me, this singing is THE original Gregorian Chant and what Gregorian Chant should sound like. The Gregorian Chant that most people hear and think of as Greg. Chant is actually the Solesmes style which is an interpretation of Greg. Chant and should not be synonymous with Greg.Chant. The Solesmes style is too polished and refined for early Christian chant and is therefore not historically accurate even though it is the official one used in the Latin rite(not Latin language) since 1850. Early Christian chant to me sounded more austere and ascetic and this recording along with the other Ensemble Organum recordings(Old Roman Chant, Beneventan Chant, Ambrosian Chant, etc.) proves that this is what Gregorian Chant really and originally sounded like.

5 out of 5 stars The Latin Mass meets the Arab Moors.......2001-08-20

Marcel Peres has done a fine job of recording an excellent representation (and in the process made available) of one of the rarest and least-known of all liturgical traditions.

The Mozarabic Rite, which survives in the Spanish cathedrals of Toledo and Salamanca alone, is a sumptuous feast for the ears and senses. Combining the immortal Latin phraseology of the Mass and its various parts, the Mozarabic tradition colors them with a temperament totally unique. Diverging from the unadorned, simple, appropriately named plain-chant of the Gregorian tradition, the Mozarabic formula incorporates Arab musical influences to the most Christian of events, the sacrifice of the Mass and holy communion.

Peres' Ensemble Organum does a head-dizzying job of making the melismatas (long variations and note changes on one vowel or sound) breathlessly exciting to listen to. Its apparent at once that this music is singular among the world's traditions, and deserves to be heard by more people. It is a masterful recording, done in Toledo's Capilla Mozarabe (Mozarabic Chapel) in the Cathedral, and even without the visual stimulation of the church, the music alone with the magnificent acoustics transports the listener 1,000 years back to days when the Christian Mozarabes developed a rite all their own amidst Islamic controlled Moorish Spain. This disc should be of interest to any sociologist or historian of Spain and especially Spain of the Mediaeval Age. The political and social confrontations of the two cultures - European Christian and Arabic Muslim - produce an exotic result that we may enjoy today.

The music is first-rate, but if another reason is needed, it is the rarity of this type of recording. A low-priced, excellent disc of this repertoire is, quite simply, impossible to find elsewhere. You may find a track on perhaps one or two other chronological collections of western liturgical music, but no other complete recording exists devoted wholly to the style. Marcel Peres is known for his exhaustive research into authenticity and his drive to accurately record liturgical rites as they were really heard in their heyday - and in this instance he performs admirably. Participate in the Mass of the Mozarabic people and enjoy an experience that will undoubtedly highlight the cultural connection between east and west and may also spark an interest in further exploration of the rite and its times!

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome CD!.......2006-08-07

I am a big fan of Lisa Thiel, and believe her voice and compositions are nothing short of supernatural. Each song on this CD casts its own kind of magickal spell. My favorite is "Faery Song." How did she manage to perfectly capture the simple joy of the Fey at Beltane in this marvelous dance song? All I can say is Lisa Thiel is amazing. If you don't already own it, this CD is a must for your Thiel collection. Pure pleasure from beginning to end!

5 out of 5 stars Enhance Your Sacred Space.......2004-10-07

While I love all of Lisa's work, this one is a classic and can immediately snap you into sacred space from the mundane. Each song is a prayer, and there is a suitable one for every single task in your life, from cleaning your house to planting your garden to asking for healing and protection. Lisa's incredible voice has the power to instantly alleviate stress bring you into a peaceful, meditative state. It was especially helpful to me when I relocated and found myself with a 120 mile round trip back and forth to work, which leaves little time for personal ritual. Listening to this CD in the car helps me utilize what would otherwise be wasted time for meditation and even manifestation. The songs follow a logical order. "Invocation" is a wonderful way to begin your day, as the lyrics express gratitude and affirm that the Mother always provides. The last song, "Sacred Ancestors" helps to remind that your guides are with you at all times. If I had to choose only one CD, this would be the one.

5 out of 5 stars If you're Wiccan, you'll love this CD.......2003-04-25
