.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

5 out of 5 stars Bach Organ Works - Helmut Walcha.......2007-01-05

I never thought I would like Bach's organ works as they can be dense and daunting. However, if you can get onto Bach's wavelength, he can transport you to an electric cosmos of beauty and enlightenment. I was given a collection of Bach organ LPs by Helmut Walcha some time ago. My friend said that Germans regard Walcha as the premier interpreter of this music. He certainly knows how to play the organ and this music soars in his hands. This music is more varied than most people imagine. Some is extremely simple and delicate while some crushes your brain! I have always loved Archive recordings and these did not disappoint!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2006-07-01

Helmut Walcha was named my TIME as "the" Bach interpreter for organ. I think that is true more than ever today with all the influences of the French Romantic school, the slam-dunk American style and the avant garde crowd. The recording has a German sound, quintessentially Teutonic in both style and approach. While Bach sounds different and even magnificient on an Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ it does not sound authentic - or as we perceive authenticity.

The fact that the artist is blind(!) means that unlike other folks who can use the music as aids, he must rely on his phenomenal memory. This is truly the stuff of genius. The sonatas are brilliant and I have never heard a better B Minor Prelude & Fugue. I only with that his stupendous "Kunst der Fuge" could have been transferred from record to CD.

5 out of 5 stars Religious experience........2006-03-04

This set of many Bach's Organ works by Helmut Walcha is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of these immortal treasures. There are almost all of Bach's Preludes and Fugues for organ, as well as many fantasias, miscallenous works and his chorals for this instrument. Walcha plays with utmost respect to the original scores, his playing is clear and powerful. Many other organists have allowed themselves quite a bit of experiment with these pieces (likes of Ton Koopman are over the top), but in the end, i've always came back to Walcha's renditions. If you want to treat yourself with some of the greatest music ever written, then get this rare set! Bach's organ music can be challenging at first, especially the fugues, and many of my friends have complained that they hear nothing else than noise in these pieces. I suppose you have to have listened this kind of music for quite some time, before you can wholly appreciate these unique pieces. But once you have, you find a world full of riches and wonder, world which only Bach can bring you. And this is a world i wouldn't change for any riches in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A real bargain at under $100.......2005-12-20

It is hard to express in words what an incredible achievement this is. The immense feats of memory alone, demanding far greater efforts than sighted performers face, command our respect. So does the consistent quality of Walcha's playing.

Bach's almost mathematical absorbtion with fugue lies at the centre of his genius. He was an organist first and foremost, an organist all his life. Like Bach, Walcha is an obsessive controller who uses music to shape his world. He treats each piece as a treasure to be cherished and burnished, and this makes him the greatest Bach organist since Schweitzer. We are told that Bach would travel miles to hear great organists perform, and Helmut Walcha is just such an organist as those.

The magnificent instrument used here is celestial in tone. To those for whom Bach fugues conjure up images of Christopher Lee playing Dracula, or dull Sundays in church, here is one of the great achievements of Western civilization, a glittering pinnacle of Baroque art, performed by a great modern spirit, in one handy box. You can't have Michaelangelo ceilings in your home, or Bernini bronzes in your living room, but by golly, you can put this on your stereo.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly music.......2005-02-23

I'm not a big organ music fan- maybe it's because it reminds this atheist too much of church! But the music here by Bach, and especially the playing by Walcha are just fantastic. I was dubious that I could find interest in 11 CDs of organ music, but I'm enthralled by every minute of each disc. A wonderful bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Bruhns was a fine composer.......2005-09-18

Cantus Colln has done a great service for those who appreciate and wish to explore the German traditon of cantatas. The compostions of Bruhns are wonderful and the native German singers make the texts come alive through the wonderful music. I'd give it six stars if I could!

For the longest time I knew German masters such as Bruhns only through their organ music. Upon hearing recordings of music such as this, one realizes that these men were not one dimensional church composers, but sophisticated composers capable of much.

5 out of 5 stars Long-awaited - a triumph!.......2003-06-22

C.P.E. Bach's obituary for J.S. Bach tells that his father "loved and studied" the music of Nikolaus Bruhns. The contrapuntal mastery of Bruhns's well-known and well-recorded organ works becomes immediately obvious upon first listening. The Bruhns cantatas, on the other hand, have received relatively few recordings. This document (by Cantus Colln) is only the second effort of its kind in the CD era (the first one by the Ricercar Consort on the Ricercar label is now out of print).

German cantatas from the late 17th Century are finally getting the attention they deserve. Bruhns is only one of numerous examples in music history where a master composer goes out of fashion, only to be rediscovered when the climate and media are suitable for performance. As J.S. Bach was for Mendelssohn in the early 19th Century; Buxtehude, Schelle and Bruhns are for their recent champions of the turn of the 21th Century. These three composers, who are getting a great deal of deserved attention these days, were considered the greatest craftsmen of North German Church music in their day. Now we have the luxury to hear these works for ourselves after the mystical "Romantic" image of Bach has faded, and we can judge this music with fresh ears.

Three of Bruhns's cantatas deserve special mention. Firstly, it is fair to contemplate how J.S. Bach (using whatever scarce free time he might have conjured in his early professional life) might have marvelled over the contrapuntal perfection in Bruhns's cantata "Muss nicht der Mensch auf dieser Erden in stetem Streite sein." This is a remarkable example of polyphony in that the exposition, episodes, and entries all seem to grow organically and effortlessly out of one another. This graceful manner rivals some of the best of Bach's fugues. The "textbook perfection" and evenness of Bruhns's counterpoint seems to go by almost unnoticed.

The cantata "Ich liege und schlafe" is an important forerunner for J.S. Bach's later expanded cantatas with multiple sections. It is in the form of the "Concerto-aria cantata", which was first cultivated by Italians in mid-seventeenth-century Dresden, popularized in Germany, then taken further by Bruhns [We must consider Bach's earliest cantatas as fluid continuations of these forms. A prime example is Bach's cantata "Gottes Zeit ist die Allerbeste Zeit", which is not as chromatic as his later cantatas of the same genre, thus sounding more like a 17th century composition].

The other remarkable Bruhns cantata is "Hemmt eure Tränenflut", which lies on the threshold of eighteenth-century mixed cantata forms. One should pay close attention to the final "Amen" in which the beginning is quoted almost note for note in Bach's "Christ lag in Todesbanden" BWV 4. It's important to keep in mind that this music was written in a period where composers rarely intended for the parts to be doubled. The French innovation of "orchestral doubling" that later influenced Bach, Handel, and Telemann did much to change this. However, when we put Bach in the context of the North German cantatas, it't then easier to justify why conductors like Andrew Parrott and Joshua Rifkin perform and record Bach with one-per-part.

There's not much to say about Cantus Colln's performance of the Bruhns cantatas other than the fact that this ensemble is clearly in its prime. Konrad Junghänel has been directing some of the highest level recordings of concerted vocal music in the past ten years (listen to their recordings of Schütz's "Psalmen Davids" or the cantatas of Buxtehude). Junghänel, together with his expert native German singers and his highly sensitive continuo section, just get better and better! If you want to hear baroque performance at its finest, you should not hesitate to buy this CD.

On this recording are six of the twelve surviving Bruhns cantatas. Does this imply that Jungänel will release a Vol. 2 in the near future?

An enthusiastic 5-stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Light from Darkness.......2007-03-07

Why `light from darkness'? Walcha was blind, and his knowledge of the inner polyphony of Bach's works appears almost in `black and white'. Indeed, I often find that Walcha's playing reminds me of a water crystal: perfect, but almost non existing. You get incomparable sense of structure, polyphony is perfect (Walcha's toucher was unique, and his registrations often involve sharp sound - and therefore you can hear everything). And he manages to seem not to be present: the music is, not the interpreter. Of course that is not true. His playing is so personal you will find all the other organists different.

He was arguably the most important - in terms of impact - of all the Bachian organists. As a matter of fact, his stereo Bach recordings are often presented as the standard. Therefore, it is inevitable to compare this mono set with the best known one.

Now I don't think Walcha's Bach is very Bachian - I don't believe Bach played it like that. Nevertheless, most of his playing is very impressive (he played all the most important organ and harpsichord Bach works) and you do see into one of the most powerful music minds ever (Bach) through one of the most intelligent interpretative minds (Walcha). Some of Walcha's interpretattions (from the stereo set) are, I think, almost impossible to better. So how does Walcha fare against himself?

Although there is a very obvious continuity from the first to the second sets, I think they differ much more than one would believe.
All the interpretations are more expressive in the mono set. This is much easier to detect comparing the St.Pierre-le-Jeune recordings with the Cappel and Hambourg ones. Take the Orgelbüchlein. Although played in a low reverberating space, the Cappel recordings are actually slower. This gives the pieces, I think, more identity. Any one is in fact much more moved. Ore take the variations on Sei gegrüsset Jesu gütich. The Hambourg recording is heart piercing: it is excruciatingly beautiful, almost unbelievable. The St.Pierre one is totally decanted, ethereal; it moves, but it does not make you break in shatters.

The Preludes and Fugues are sometimes similar - or different but equally good. I would make two exceptions: I prefer both the great a minor and the 'dorian' fugues at Alkmaar. I may prefer the g minor (BWV535) p&f at Saint-Pierre, and I certainly favour the 'small' e-minor played there.
So, how does Walcha compares with himself?

By a very small margin I prefer the former recordings. Of course, audio technique is not so good; but technically Walcha was at his best - which means fabulously, almost unbeleivably, superlatively good). But, on the other hand, the stereo recordings have so many miracles to be found...

So if you have to take a decision on which to buy, go for both of them... You wont' regret it.

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs.......2005-10-25

I bought this collection from a mail order firm in 1993, and can only call it "an encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with an encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs."

I don't listen to these discs track to track, but rather selected tracks and keep this 9 disc set in my collection as an encyclopedia, for reference, rather than to listen to for hours on end.

This collection doesn't contain any of the 3 great Schubert song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin", or "Winterreise." Most of these songs are less than 5 minutes in length, but some are as long as 20 minutes, with Recitative/Aria/Recit./Aria pattern. Each disc is 70 minutes or more, making for a lot of music. Going dollar for music, it's a good deal!

I am very thankful for this release. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) seemed inexhaustable, making many lieder and opera recordings in the late 1960s/early 70s when these recordings were made for DG. His partnership with pianist Gerald Moore lasted many years, and they recorded many of these same lieder for EMI.

I won't attempt to go into detail describing different songs in this large collection, but if you love great singing and Schubert lieder, consider this as an investment in eternity. If you only want a disc of "Greatest hits" of this genre, consider the DG "Originals" release of Fischer-Dieskau with both Gerald Moore and Jorg Demus in different tracks.

You can tell I'm biased in favor of Herr Fischer-Dieskau and his singing, which is always beautiful here. I also love Schubert as sung by Hermann Prey (1929-1998): Philips Eloquence, and Decca (deleted); Janet Baker (Hyperion, with Graham Johnson); and Hans Hotter (EMI, with "Schwanengesang.")

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs.

Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.
