Rica Amabis' Sambadelic is in many ways a companion disk to Andrea Marquee's Zumbi. Released by the same label, it features many of the same cutting-edge musicians and has basically the same sound; i.e., frenetic, psychedelic, and funky. Amabis has clearly been influenced by the late Chico Science, one of the pioneers of the still-blossoming mangue beat scene. There's a mix of old and new, featuring compositions by Amabis as well as classics like "Falsa Baiana" (introduced by Gal Costa in the late '60s), "Marcio Leonardo e Telmo," by Brazilian soul legend Tim Maia, as well as a song by the king of Brazilian roots music, Luiz Gonzaga. -Michael Cowan
