4 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-07-02

This compilation cd is a great collection of Santana favorites. The instrumentals only feature lifts these recordings from a 60's/70's, etc. retrospective into a terrific adult contemporary classic.

3 out of 5 stars Santana The Best Instrumentals.......2007-03-19

This CD has a number of Santana's classic hits like Samba Pa Ti, Flor de Luna, and Soul Sacrifice that I really enjoyed, however, in my opinion those are the only really good songs and this is a mediocre album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Instrumentals.......2006-11-06

This is great collection. This is the flavor of Santana I enjoy most.

4 out of 5 stars From the inside!!.......2005-08-20

This is a very good compilation of only instrumentals by the master. My only regret is that "Every Step of the Way" from "Caravanserai" is missing. That is one of the most powerful Santana songs ever. Also, my favorite in this compilation is "Aquamarina".

5 out of 5 stars Just the music.......2005-01-09

There are many great guitarists in the world but only Carlos Santana can move me like he does. Long ago I made my own version of this album on cassette because I wanted all these great instumentals on one tape. Finally it has been done and been done right. Europa is easily the best instrumental number ever and I would argue one of the best songs of all time. It is perfectly married with all the other great Santana numbers that were usually the best thing on their respective albums.
Put this on, turn the lights down low and lose yourself in the music.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of old memory.......2000-04-01

There are lots of 70's and 80's pop songs in this album. This 2-CD album brought me back to my high school days when there were few audio CDs in my country. Lots of known pop songs from radio in the past days are now digitalized. The sound quality of this album is pretty good. I'll recommand this album to anyone who loves 70's and 80's pop songs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars LOUSY TOMBRAIDER MIX, EXCELLENT OTHER MIXES.......2001-09-20

The Tomb Raider mix familiar to most is less bouncey and more industrial thanks to former NIN guy Charlie Clouser, and is not really my cup of tea. Much more fascinating are a sort of arabic hiphop version that anyone who has seen U2 live recently will be familiar with, and an evil hiphop turn on the Quincey and Sonace mix.

5 out of 5 stars The Goal is Soul ..........2001-08-10

"Elevation" - a rock song, a dance tune, a soundtrack favourite. U2 have always been able to pump out songs that can get you to stand up and move, go 80 mph in a 35, and lift your spirit when your soul is anything but elevated.

This single includes 4 remixes. The first being the hit single from The Tomb Raider movie (I dare anyone not to rock out to this song). The Second, the 'Escalation Mix', takes U2 back to it's more dance friendly phase - not too memorable, but still good. The third and probably most famous with the U2 crowd is the 'Influx Remix'. This remix was featured as the band's intro for their Elevation tour. The 'Influx Remix' is a great example of what all remixes should be like. Experimental, but true to the original song. Can't beat that Sitar. Finally, the last song featured on the single is the 'Quincey & Sonance Remix'. Quincey & Sonance also did an admirable remix of U2's "Beautiful Day" but their take on "Elevation" stands high above it.

This is just a great song with great rock, great roll, and great soul. U2 have done it again and it is obvious who has the job of greatest Rock 'n Roll band on the planet.

4 out of 5 stars Influx Baby!.......2001-07-22

The influx remix of elevation is better than anything on their new album (save for In a Little While). It makes one yearn that they returned to their more experimental 90's music, instead of dishing out cold leftovers on their new album.

3 out of 5 stars A fairly good package of seventies material.......2003-06-08

This album combines the best-of compilation "Timepieces" and the live "Timepieces vol II - Live In The Seventies" (not to be confused with the lavish box set "Crossroads II", which also bears the title "Live In The Seventies").

"Timepieces" was a pretty good overview of the first few years of Eric Clapton's solo career, and although hardly definitive, it does offer some of the highlights from "Eric Clapton", "461 Ocean Boulevard", "Slowhand" and Clapton's other seventies albums, and it even brings in the Derek & The Dominoes-single "Layla" (too bad that nothing else from that fabulous album is here).

"Timepieces vol. II" is a relatively short live album (eight tracks), bringing together songs as diverse as Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (nice rendition of that one), Charles Chaplin's "Smile" and Clapton's own "Blues Power".

The inclusion of very non-bluesy songs like "Smile" and Danny Flowers' country-rocker "Tulsa Time" probably means that not every Clapton fan will like this album, but I find it quite enjoyable, actually. The sound is very good, and the band is excellent, particularly keyboardist Chris Stainton who plays piano on the five recordings made at Tokyo's Budokan arena.

All in all, this is a nice overview of Eric Clapton in the seventies, blues, music hall and everything, but if you already have a good Clapton compilation ("The Cream Of Clapton" for example), you don't really need "Timepieces". But maybe you will want to check out "Timepieces vol II", which should still be available in its original format.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Like nailing jello to a wall.......2005-03-01

I truly did not want to be critical of this collection -- as it contains many wonderful songs (with many personal memories attached for many Canadians aged 30 to 50 somethings. However, despite its attempt to group these songs by genre on each CD, for me, their still too diverse to hang together (i.e., be listenable). Perhaps I am just to attached to many of the songs separately... This set, is however, a very good introduction for appreciators of Canadian music, and people under 30...
Cheers

PS. One more complaint. Did Celine's "Titanic Song" really have to be included here... jezzzzzzz! Holy smaltzy, Batman!

4 out of 5 stars The first volume was stronger.......2001-06-17

I'm not about to poop on the party and say this four-disc compilation of Canadian pop and rock isn't worth buying. That simply wouldn't be true. But I find myself playing the first Oh What A Feeling box set more than this package simply 'cause this one feels like the second tier of the Great White North's musical output...what wasn't quite remarkable enough to fit on volume one.

There are a couple of returning acts (The Guess Who with Share The Land, BTO with You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, Neil Young with Heart Of Gold), but for the most part these are artists who didn't make it to vol. 1. among the highlights are Tal Bachman's instantly-hummable She's So High, Barney Bentall's heartland classic Something To Live For, Lee Aaron's Whatcha Do To My body and the Northern Pikes' rockin' party favourite She Ain't Pretty (She Just Looks That Way).

This package also tilts away from classic stuff towards more up-to-date things, like SoulDecision's Faded and Dream Warriors' My Definition Of A Bombastic Jazz Style. For that reason vol. 2 is of less interest to old white guys like me, but at the same time is more eclectic than the first compilation. If anything, that means it shows the world a truer picture of what Canadians are capable of doing musically.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection.......2001-04-08

This is a 4 cd box set which features some of the best in Canadian artists. Almost every genre except classical is covered here. Disc 1 features artists of the 90's. It includes Shania Twain..."Man! I feel like a woman", Sarah McLachlan..."Building a Mystery", Alanis Morissette..."Thank U", and others like Celine Dion, The Moffats, Snow, Choclair, Len and Deborah Cox. Disc 2 features harder rock acts of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Bands like Loverboy..."The Kid is hot Tonite", Bryan Adams..."Summer of '69", The Tea Party..."Heaven Coming down", and others like Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip, Trooper and Lee Aaron. Disc 3 contains rock and pop, also from the 70's through 90's. Such as The Guess Who..."Share the Land", The Band..."Up on Cripple Creek", Anne Murray..."Danny's Song", and others from Platinum Blonde to Crash Test Dummies. Disc 4 is the most eclectic with a mix of folk, pop, Celtic and jazz. From Neil Young..."Heart of Gold", Diana Krall..."Peel me a grape", to Barenaked Ladies..."One week". This is a music lovers goldmine, and highly recommended. The first "Oh, What a Feeling" collection, was only on the market for 4 months. So get this while it's still available.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection Of Canadian Music!.......2001-03-26

The first edition of this CD sold over two million copies in Canada and hopefully this one will be even more successful. This is a four CD collection of Juno Award winners/nominees from past and present. Even if you're not Canadian, try hard and get this CD since it won't be in print for much longer.

5 out of 5 stars Several Different Styles Here, All Good.......2006-04-03

There is a song on this record "Tomorrow is a Long Time" which is just about one of the best songs I've every heard. It's from a concert that, if all of the performances were delivered this well, then I don't know why they didn't release the whole show. Also I agree that it would have been nice to have a whole record of Bob Dylan and Happy Traum together. It also would have been nice to have a whole record produced by Leon Russell, because as we see with the two songs he produced on this record, "Watching" the River Flow" and "When I Paint My Masterpiece" Mr. Russell knew how to get a good rocker out of Mr. Dylan. Still, even though we don't have the records it would have been nice to have, we have snippets here of what they could have been. Several different styles, all good, but then Bob Dylan is always reinventing himself, but to reinvent himself a couple times on the same record, amazing, simply amazing.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Fine Collection, Mighty Fine.......2006-04-03

This originally came out as a double record which was not only a greatest hits record, but it had a lot of new songs on it as well. The three songs, "I Shall Be Released", "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" and "Down in the Flood", recorded with banjo player Happy Traum are just superb. I, for one, wish he would have recorded the whole album with him. What a joy that would have been. Dylan is in fine voice on those songs. They are so upbeat. What a great end to the set.

Then there is the beginning. The Leon Russell produced "Watching the River Flow" is quite a rocker and so is "When I Paint My Masterpiece" also produced by Leon Russell. There are plenty of Dylan standards on this record as well and one wonders how in the world they picked them, because to my way of thinking just about every song, from every LP released up to this time, could have been included. This is a fine collection, just fine. Mighty fine.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Collection.......2006-04-03

This is a very interesting collection. The songs, though are all very good, just don't seem to flow as well (at least for me) as they do on "Greatest Hits, Volume 1." Sticing the acoustic, "Don't Think Twice" between the Rocking "Watching the River Flow" and "Lay, Lady Lay" just someone seems not right. I would have grouped the three early acoustic songs together along with the very excellent "Tomorrow is a Long Time" a live song that until this record came out, had been unreleased. It is such a good song and maybe should have been grouped with its brothers. All that being said, this is a very good collection with some outstanding songs you're just gonna love and even with my problem with the grouping, I still have to give this record five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty Jewels and Gems on Greatest Hits Two.......2005-10-30

This Double Record was a shocker when it came out, because it not only had some of Dylan's Greatest hits, but it had plenty of new stuff as well, and some stuff that had been left behind. "Tomorrow is a Long Time," one of Dylan's best acoustic songs, heretofore unreleased, is presented here live, taken from the 1963 Town Hall Concert that Columbia never released, but should've (If anyone from CBS/Sony is reading this, Town Hall would make an excellent addition to the official Bootleg Series). Two other unreleased gems are the hard driving, hard rocking, "Watching the River Flow," produced by Leon Russell and the beyond superb "When I Paint My Masterpiece" also produced by Mr. Russell.

But in my opinion, the three jewels of this album are the songs recorded with banjo player Happy Traum, "I Shall Be Released", "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" and "Down in the Flood". Oh, wouldn't it have been great if Dylan would have reworked a whole albums worth of those songs he'd done down in that basement with the Band. Not that the "Basement Tapes" aren't good, they are excellent, but I sure do love they way he's done these three songs. I guess they just wetted our whistles for "Blood on the Tracks." The Bob Dylan we knew and loved was coming back.

This record is packed with plenty more gems, like "The Mighty Quinn," taken from the Isle of Wight show with Bob singing in his countryfied voice, "She Belongs to Me" from "Bringing it all Back Home", "If Not for you," from "New Morning," and lots more. Thumbs up from me for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Some Great Stuff on this Album.......2005-10-30

Because there were only four albums between "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" and "Greatest Hits" a lot of people didn't think there was enough hit material for another record, but they were wrong, almost every song on "Highway 61" and "Bringing it all Back Home" are so called hit material. However, the folks at Colombia and Mr. D himself were aware of the criticizism they might get, so they included enough new stuff to keep his fans happy, such as three new recordings Dylan did with banjo player Happy Traum "Crash on the Levee (Down in the Flood)," "I Shall Be Released," and "You Ain't Going Nowhere." Also this is the only album where you'll find, the two songs Leon Russell produced for Dylan, "When I Paint My Master Piece," and "Watching the River Flow" and then there is that haunting version of "Tomorrow is a Long Time," recorded live. This is a must have five star record. Plus there is that nifty minature LP sleeve, a must for collectors like myself.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshment for your ears........2000-07-27

You know those days when nothing in your music collection matches the mood you are in or you are actually tired of everything and yet you need to fill the air with sounds? Here is the album that might resolve the problems. The 2CD compilation contains songs that stylistically match one another. You'll find very well known hits by Everything But The Girl and Fatboy Slim and half-forgotten or not known ones like "Loose It" by Happy Mondays, a group very well known in Europe and not in the US. Released in 1990, this song quickly made it to Top20 Singles chart in Britain. It sounds just as fresh today as it did then. Another favorite of mine is "Flame" by Crustation with Bronagh Slevin. The song is a fresh breeze of perfect harmony, fragile and sensual with a certain strong edge. The Album is not completely "chilly". Leftfield's "Song of Life" is more appropriate for waking up in the morning than for after-midnight listening in your foamy bath for example.

5 out of 5 stars groovy groovy album.......2000-05-19

This album is like none other. It is addictive to listen to, because the varying rythms are wonderfully pleasing. Both cds have a distinct groove that is perfect for any activity, be it working at the office or sipping wine outside on a summer's eve. It has both mellow and upbeat grooves. I recommend this album for anyone who is looking for something slightly different, but something infinitely pleasing.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant follow up to the Original Chillout Album.......2000-04-13

This cd is brilliant! What a choice of tunes to chill you out to the maxxxxxxx..... Check out the version of "Light My Fire" by none other than Shirley Bassey. Sends shivers down your spine. A must have for anyone into really good funky ambient music....

    5 out of 5 stars Volume 2 complements Volume 1 perfectly.......2005-02-14

Around the same time that Columbia released "The Essential Bob Dylan" in the US, it also released "The Best of Bob Dylan Volume 2" in most overseas markets, a sequel to Volume 1 which was released in 1997.

"The Best of Bob Dylan Volume 2" (17 tracks, 77 min., plus bonus disk) starts off with the 'excuse' that was needed for the release, namely the excellent (and Oscar-winning) "Things Have Changed" from the "Wonder Boys" soundtrack. After that, the remaining 16 tracks provide a chronological overview of Dylan's best known songs not found on Volume 1, and thus form a perfect complement to Volume 1. The highlights are many, including "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", "I Want You", "Simple Twist of Faith", "Changing of the Guards" (all of which are missing from "The Essential Bob Dylan"), "Hurricane", "Rainy Day Woman", and so on. The audio quality is superb. So you ask, what more can one expect of a "greatest hits" album? A bonus disk, of course!

The bonus disk (18 min.) provides live tracks of the epic "Highlands" (from "Time Out of Mind"), followed by "Blowing in the Wind". They show Dylan in his element, and I wish there were more official releases of the "Never-Ending Tour".

In all, this is an excellent compilation. Highly recomended!

4 out of 5 stars Best of Vol. 2, Six Reviews in One.......2003-10-01

Throughout the years the suits at Columbia, then Sony have tried to make more money of Mr. D by mixing and matching his material, not just in a Greatest Hits compilation, but as a "Best of Import" from Japan, Holland, Sweden, or some other far away place. They tout them as better, different, remastered, a gold version and lots of times they'll build these compilations around a song that hadn't appeared on any other album.

The current favorite is the wonderful song, "Things have changed," which shows up on five different sets available today.

"The Best of series Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" Imports are the only one of the 5 sets that you can get separately and, since they couldn't put "Things Have Changed on both CDs, they put "Shelter From The Storm," from the Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding move "Jerry Maguire" on the first disc. If you were to buy both discs in this set you'd be out over fifty bucks. Of course, there isn't a bad song on the discs, but if you're like me, you already own most of them.

"The Very Best of Vol. 1 & 2" Swedish version has 33 songs on it, all available elsewhere except, of course "Things Have Changed." The songs are about the same as on the other compilations and this one will set you back thirty-three dollars.

"The Ultimate Collection," is of course not the ultimate collection, but it is a collection of 33 songs, very similar in scope to the songs in the other collection and built around, "Things Have Changed." This version will shrink you wallet by thirty-nine dollars.

"The Essential Bob Dylan" double CD set has 30 songs on it and has a nice flow to it. Like the other compilations mentioned here it features "Things Have Changed." You'll have to fork over twenty-one dollars to get this one. It's the most reasonably priced of the bunch, and so it's the only one I'm giving five stars to.

"The Essential Bob Dylan" Import has six more songs on it and it'll cost you 16 more dollars. That's a lot of money to pay to get those extra six songs.

Okay after rounding them up and telling you a little about them, I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed in Sony about this group. Unlike "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" which like these isn't really a Greatest Hits compilation, these CDs cost a whole gang of money and give us only one new song. "GH 2" gave us a half dozen new tunes, so we (not me, cuz I wasn't born yet) didn't feel ripped off when we bought it. Also, the "Biograph" compilation was stuffed with new songs. Ah well, my recommendation would be to buy the American version of "The Essential Bob Dylan" for twenty-one dollars and shine the rest of them on. Five stars for that one, four for the rest.

I'm not that big a fan of U2's song "Elevation." I sort of prefer my U2 to be serious. This single is worth picking up for the b-side of "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," which is a laid-back cover of the Johnny Cash song. Nothing revelatory, but a good thing for the die-hard U2 fan to own.

This is my favorite U2 single of all. Elevation is even my second favorite track off of ATYCLB. I even went to a concert of the 2001 tour. I really like the great guiter ending by the edge in the live version of "Last Night On Earth" from Mexico City. I really like too the tribute to Johnny Cash in "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" . And the main track the Tomb Raider mix of "Elevation" is great. It's well worth your money, compared to other singles. I also suggest the first "Elevation" single with the really cool phycodelic Influx Remix of Elevation and two others . And also the single of "Electrical Storm" with two great mixes of "New York". U2 is just the greatest band
