Amazon.com essential recording
Simply one of the greatest live blues recordings ever. Hooker plays alone at Soledad, yet the real thrill is hearing him backed at Greenwich Village's Café Au-Go-Go in 1966 by Muddy Waters and his band, including pianist Otis Spann, unsung harmonica giant George Smith, Francis Clay on drums, and guitarists Sammy Lawhorn and Luther Johnson. All are at the height of their abilities, but it's Hooker who works like a hoodoo conjurer, making misery rain down in "Seven Days" and "When My First Wife Left Me." This August night's reading of "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" ranks among the most intimidating vocal performances ever taped. His guitar and baritone singing sink to rarely heard depths of the blues--that secret place in the music (known only to its absolute masters) where it becomes an elemental force. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:

Two Great Live Albums in One CD.......2006-10-18
Live at The Cafe Go-Go is recoreded with Muddy Waters band (Muddy always had the best bands!) including the great Otis Spann on Piano. Muddy even plays guitar on one of the tunes. Sound quality is excellent and John Live is in fine form, but a little restrain. You get the feeling the band had not played that much together. Hearing JLH with Otis Spann in keys is pretty cool however. Bad like Jesse James is one of the creepiest songs made and is made even more haunting by Spann's parse piano.
Live at Soledad prison catch John Lee is his Endless Boogie phase, which for me is where it is at. Sound quality is surprisely very good and his band, including his son John Lee Jr., are tight. Bang Bang Bang is a great jam all the way from the Motor City. This contains all but two cuts of the original Live at Soledad album. These two tunes were sung by John Lee Jr. I love how at the end of the album the prison plugs the plug on the band and it takes a while for everybody to figure out what happened.
Looking for some more great live John Lee Hooker check the live Album with Albert King (they don'y played together, but share the same CD) 'I Play the Blues for you'. For me this is some of the finest JLH caught live on tape. JLH studio album 'Never get out of these blues alive' is also another great album.
This is a great album for anyone who enjoys the blues, live blues, John Lee, or enjoys Otis Spann. Album should be the staple of any basic bblues collection. I highly recommend this CD.
Live John Lee..........2005-11-22
What an incredible man!.......2005-04-07
The band is in top form and John Lee uses them to get the crowd rocking as he works his magic. Everything is spot-on! From slow, painful numbers to upbeat, rollicking shuffles, John Lee Hooker and his band can do it all.
This is a landmark album that shows a man (and a band) at the top of their game and it's something no self-respecting blues fan should be without! You'd have to be dead not to be affected by this!

Still delivers with the best.......2006-08-02
I bought this CD to see if I would still like it. You hear so much music from the 60s to the 90s all over the radio. Some sounds rancid and some sublime.
I loved this album when it first came out. (My friend Chris Winfield who is now an artist, turned me on to them as he did to much jazz, classical and blues.) They were among my favorite groups then and remain so.
I have to say that I loved Flute thing and a few instrumentals which are not included here but no one can perform every track in concert.
Listening now, I especially enjoy Alberta and Violets of Dawn, very poetic with that certain offness which Verlaine recommends for poetry. (I can't even recommend Verlaine so much since so many other French poets exceed him by far but he did write some amazing poems on how poetry should work.)
So, if you want pure poetry in the form of music, get this CD.
For me, this was the first............2006-03-22

Technical virtuosity!.......2005-11-26
This recording is a dazzling display of technical ability and artistry. Midori has the audacity to attempt Ernst's 6th polyphonic etude (The Last Rose of Summer) in a LIVE recital. She pulls it off without error except intonation issues on a few notes (easily forgiven!). The CD is worth owning for this one piece alone.
The Beethoven and Strauss sonatas are played with wonderful clarity and.. dare I say... musicality. The sound quality is excellent save a few audible coughs from the audience which come with live recordings.

Supreme artist and virtuoso playing spellbinding music!.......1998-09-10
The second piece of the program is the magnificent, hyper-romantic, yet seldom recorded sonata by the young Richard Strauss. In contrast with the previous piece, this ultra-dramatic sonata is marvellously rich in content and expressive opportunities, and one can scarcely imagine it being played more effectively by someone else. Midori's technical finesse and enchanting tone, governed by a contemplative mind and a feverishly ardent heart, ready to pump out into the rapt audience at any moment, culminate in an immensely moving rendition. The listener must also credit the pianist Robert McDonald's spirited and sensitive playing. One can't help wondering why one so rarely hears this splendid piece.
This enigma is not so confounding after one listens to Heifetz's 1954 studio recording of the same piece. Seasoned critic Henry Roth declares that the Strauss Sonata "belongs" to Heifetz in the sense that few would dispute his supremacy. Indeed, Heifetz championed this work throughout his career, yet apparently to little avail; were Midori in Heifetz's position, she would positively have widely popularized the work.
Midori begins the second half with Beethoven's Sonata No. 8. She captures the gaiety and animation of the outer movements as well as anyone else, yet they are not fully gratifying. In the first movement, the exposition is repeated, later recapitulated, but unbelievably, her interpretations-though individually superb-of these three times are virtually the same, lacking in variety. In the third movement, her pursuit of wanton vivacity in a certain passage sacrifices the tone quality. Yet her slow movement is super-sensitive, particularly in transitional passages; it is the finest rendition of this movement I've ever heard--even superior to Szeryng's.
The following piece--Ernst's Variations on "The Last Rose of Summer"--I consider to be one of the three most technically demanding pieces ever written for the violin, together with Paganini's variations on Nel cor piu non mi sento and God Save the Queen.
The most horrendous part is about halfway through the middle, when the left hand plucks the celebrated theme, and the bow plays legato arpeggios across all four strings as an accompaniment at the same time. Don't forget that the left hand also has to press the swift arpeggio notes! Then the left-hand pizzicato is exchanged for artificial harmonics, singing the melody while the arpeggios still whirl around. The pizzicato returns to repeat the dumbfounding passage, and then she heads into the final variation, designed to exhibit the violin's kaleidoscopic tone colors: Harmonic staccatos-one of the ultimate tests in precision and coordination of both hands-juxtaposed alternately with a blizzard of double-harmonics, huge octave leaps, full-pelt runs up and down a single string, fingered octaves, pizzicato, etc.
Midori audaciously elected to play in her New York debut this terrifying piece which, as far as I know, only Ricci, Kremer and Vengerov to date have recorded in history; Heifetz and Perlman undoubtedly have never dared to take up its stratospheric challenge. Double-harmonics often make a good violinist sound like two bad ones, but Midori, with her exceptionally lengthy, slender, and agile fingers, effortlessly negotiates these intricacies and makes them sound as if they were played by two fine flutists. This will no doubt render multitudes of violinists, such as Heifetz, green with envy. The fiendishly difficult fireworks are all tossed off with lithe gracefulness and seeming ease; the left-hand pizzicatos are articulate, the harmonics pellucid, the octave shifts pure in intonation, and the tone quality immaculate. To be relentlessly critical, in this live concert, there were a paltry two or three fleeting notes that weren't of perfect pitch. See if you can find an edited studio recording closer to perfection.
Midori's prodigious prowess lies not only in her ability to make the most herculean pieces sound easy, but make them sound musical. We can try to forget about all the pyrotechnics; rather than marvel at her unprecedented instrumental mastery, we can immerse ourselves in the wonderfully beautiful music, and savour the bountiful nuances.
Anyone would badly need a respite after performing such a strenuous piece, and Midori gave her hands--but not her mind and heart--a brief relief in Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor. Here's another meticulously thought out and superbly expressive rendition that, complemented with a most sympathetic tone, can hardly fail to melt the attentive listener's heart.
Ravel's Tzigane [gypsy] begins with a long oration of the solo violin, the first part of it entirely on the G string. In some other versions, e.g. by Francescatti, the solo part sounds inert, mundane, and monotonous; certainly that is not what I expect from Midori. Even solely on one string, Midori, by dint of divergent bow pressures, portamentos and vibrato, plus rubato, creates a most colorful, elastic, luscious, bewitching, yet doleful tone. Throughout the piece, she perpetually captivates the audience with her breathtaking technical wizardry, variegated and multi-dimensional tone, boundless array of expressive devices, stark dynamic contrasts, and subtle phrasing.
Due to the limited space here, I cannot pinpoint several startling details of Midori's innovative rendition. To sum up, one can only be awe-struck by her sophisticated mind, natural gypsy spirit, and dazzling virtuosity, which results in a performance that brought the house down.
It seems that the 19-year-old Midori has nearly reached the pinnacle of violin art. Every rational, experienced and impartial person who had the privilege to witness this unforgettable concert will have to concede that, at least in expressive and virtuosic music, Midori is already a nonpareil.

Parisian Pop Chanteuse Camille Earns Her Stripes as a Live Performer.......2007-01-25
It would be a simple matter to put Camille in the category as other other Gallic pop muses like Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin, and currently Fracoiz Breut, who all render their vocals in a purring and breathy in the manner of the Serge Gainsborough school of deliciously frothy French pop. Camille's musical journey extends the French pop confection to the previously uncharted regions that have been declared off limits and designated "experimental" by those boilerplate producers who cater to the commercial tastes of the tone-deaf masses.
Camille's music contains elements of performance art and she has the avant-garde sensibility of say, Laurie Anderson, Bjork, or the mysterious Sabina Sciubba (of the Brazilian Girls). Like Bjork, and Laurie Anderson, Camille is fascinated by the use of the human voice as a percussion instrument to enhance her vocals. She normally overdubs three or four separate, but layered vocal tracks in the studio. In this live performance, however Camille uses 3 other vocalists to fill-out some of her own multi-layered vocal tracks that are a part of her "signature" studio production sound. A few of the songs sounded like prepared tapes were used. The rest up the live set-up is minimalist with a drummer, bass and Camille's own piano and guitar. It amazing how little she needs to replicate the lush and lavish production sound of her studio music before a live audience.
Since her earlier albums and the Nouvelle Vague album were studio recording projects, some skeptics (of which included myself) had wondered how Camille's often meandering musical statement would be greeted by live audiences. I am no longer a doubting Thomas about Camille's ability to command a stage. It's apparent that she holds her audience as willing and adoring captives from the first song until the final coda.
Her music is alluring and haunting even to those who don't understand her native French tongue. The music is intended to have the trance-like spell of ambient music, and comprehension of the lyrics is secondary to the appreciation of the music.
My only complaint about this otherwise magnificent album is there are a just a couple of moments where the enthusiastic audience at the Trianon gets a bit too carried away and does a clap-along that undermines the quality of Camille's musical performance. I'm puzzled by grown adults who feel the impulse to clap-along like preschoolers do for a Raffi rendition of "Baa,Baa Black Sheep."
It's only on a couple of songs in the generous sampling of 20 original songs, which pretty much covers the two dozen songs on her earlier two CDs, including "Le Fil" which won the French equivalent of a Grammy for best album. Most people probably wouldn't even be bothered by the momentary clap alongs. My complaint is that of an obsessive/compulsive person about background noise at a musical performance.
At age 26, Camille is young and is still an unfinished product of an immense and unusual musical talent. She is worshiped in Europe and does have the same sort of quirky crossover appeal of Bjork or Sabina Sciubba for fans of down-tempo indie music and world-beat in the USA. Her future is only limited to what she chooses to do with it.

Hear What Sting Heard.......2007-02-10
The rumor is that Sting heard Cheb's singing coming out of some nightclub in Paris and raced in to see who was singing---asked him to sing on his Desert Rose album and the rest is history. Well, that's where I first heard Cheb---on Sting's album. It took a little sleuthing, but I found out who it was and have been an avid fan for several years. This is a fab live disc and I play it almost constantly. Another good one is 'Let Me Rai". That disc has an amazing swath of styles on it (a Scottish rock drum march, sung in Arabic? Go on wif yer bad self) that will leave you tapping your toes. After listening to it several times, you'll be singing along (phonetically) to some of the most infectious music on earth.
