5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-04-26

Even without a single vocal, this is a lot of fun to listen to.Great instrumental rock.Satriani's best album and no weak material.Essential for fans of 80's metal and for fans of guitar oriented rock.Joe Satriani influenced a lot of guitarists including Dimebag and Zakk Wylde.Great job,Joe.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for all JS lovers.......2007-02-06

His sound has clearly improved over the years so this might not be the best place to start but when you get hooked this has to be in the collection. Can recommend the latest Live cd/dvd which also contains some of the numbers and personally I would say it sounds better then the studio track

4 out of 5 stars satriani.......2007-01-10

This is a great CD, older but totally joe. I need to get more of his music!

5 out of 5 stars Without peer.......2006-12-20

I think this album created the "guitar-god" phenomenon. Joe Satriani is without peer. SWtA samples numerous different styles with amazing technique. Someone listening to this now may not be quite as impresses by the technical tricks but keep in mind--no one was doing this stuff before Satriani.

Sure, there were plenty of amazing shredders that emerged in the 80s and 90s (and a couple new ones today) who might give Satriani some competition as far as technique, but none who are also as gifted of songwriters. There's actual music here instead of just fodder for guitar-nuts. Everyone should have this album.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Guitar Rock Album.......2006-09-29

Joe Satriani is unquestionably one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. He influenced as many guitarists as he was influenced by, and manages to set the standard for creativity and technical prowess in the world of instrumental guitar rock. When this album was released back in '87, it was unique and unlike anything else being played at the time. Sure, guitar-shredding was fairly popular, with technicians like Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinnie Moore receiving due credit in the world of neoclassical rock, but there was little variation between these artists and their lightning-speed scales, arpeggios and clasically inspired licks.

Joe Satriani managed to release an album which was fresh, powerful and varied. Instead of sticking to one approach for every song the way Yngwie or MacAlpine did, Joe wrote each song as an individual piece of music with its own vibe, message and unique quality. He shows a great deal of restraint, tying his songs together with strong, well-constructed melodies and riffs that can be soloed over or improvised on to create a fluid, progressive piece of music. Every song on this album is a winner, and what makes them work so well together is their differences of style but consistency of quality. No track is alike or could be mistaken for another, but they are all incredible in their own way.

1) Surfing With the Alien - Awesome track that's all over the place. It features some of the album's flashiest playing, with especially exciting tapping and bluesy riffs. It isn't the absolute greatest song on here, but it makes for a fine introductory piece of what's to come. (8/10)

2) Ice 9 - A funky, infectious song with lead guitar playing somewhat reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, only more futuristic-sounding. As with much of his material, Satch starts out slow and builds up to balls-out shredding. Satch loves to experiment with a variety of guitar tones and sounds, and this song is the perfect showcase for his creative abilities. (8.5/10)

3) Crushing Day - This could be my favorite song on the album, and is definitely one of my favorite Satriani songs of all time. The main melody/lead riff in this song is simply perfect. It's emotional yet driving, and filled with energy that only Satch could deliver. The song also features some awesome soloing and great rhythm guitar. Satriani's tone sounds simply amazing here. (9.5/10)

4) Always With Me, Always With You - Here is another excellent, trademark Satriani song which has become a favorite among listeners, including myself. It's more subdued than some of the faster songs on here, and features a "brown sound" lead guitar tone comparable to Van Halen, soloing with lush melodies over a clean rhythm section. The overall feel of it is warm, passionate and electrifying. (9.5/10)

5) Satch Boogie - This isn't my favorite song on the album, but it's still quite cool. It's very energetic and filled with rapid-fire blues bends and artificial harmonics. The rhythm section, as the title suggests, is pure boogie blues. The way Satch soloes over the rhythm section is what makes this song appealing--he uses finger-tapping, neoclasiscal sounding scales and phrasing, along with straight ahead blues-rock to give the song a sense of immediacy and impulsivity. It's a fast, ruthless song which fits in well with the collection. (8/10)

6) Hill of the Skull - Here is the album's first most unique song, and also one of its two shortest. Clocking in at under 2 minutes, the song is a brief foray into brooding, atmospheric territory. It actually would have been cool if the song were more progressive and lengthier, but it works well as a miniature experiment, all the same. It features some of the most heartfelt, classically influenced melodies on the album, but still manages to sound incredibly original. No shredding here, just slow, dirging guitar melody and a similarly grave rhythm section. (8.5/10)

7) Circles - A cool, laid back rhythm intro erupts into pounding, distorted riffs and frenzied lead guitar work. Joe Satriani's lead guitar tone sounds in fine form here. The song switches back to the mellow vibe that it started out with. (8.5/10)

8) Lords of Karma - Kind of a strange, mysterious song which sounds deliciously 80's, but has that trademark space-age Satriani sound to it which is present through this album. Here is a great example of why Satriani was so ahead of his time with this album--there is no other song or artist that I can think of to compare this particular song to. Even the name is original. The soloing is, of course, pretty similar to other shred-fare seen during the 80's, only slightly more fluid and progressive. Satriani knows what he's doing. (9/10)

9) Midnight - The shortest track on the album, this song starts out a bit like Eddie Van Halen's Spanish Fly. The clean tapping sounds amazingly smooth and bell-like. After the Spanish Fly reminiscent intro, the song gets slightly more brooding with the addition of keyboard and rhythm section. It returns to the classical-sounding guitar tapping. Awesome little track. (8.5/10)

10) Echo - As the album's closer, this one is expected to be great, which it is. It's one of the album's highlights, and manages to incorporate just about every element which makes Satriani's playing excellent. It's more serious and contemplative than something like the title track of Satch Boogie, but is still a showcase for Joe's technical abilities. It's the album's longest song, and the most progressive, giving a real sense of journey and evolution over the course of 5 and a half minutes. As expected, it sounds fresh and futuristic, combining simple elements in an unusual and amazingly skilled manner to produce a completely original work. (9.5/10)

This is a must-have album, and despite its short length, is still one of the best values for anyone willing to spend money on a cd these days. In 37 minutes, Joe covers more ground than most guitarists cover in their entire careers. The album has been around for 20 years and it doesn't sound a bit dated.

One of the most innovative voices in contemporary American music, guitarist Joe Satriani celebrates two decades as a recording artist by releasing yet another consistently strong and refreshing platter of soulful goodness. Like his former student and sometime sparring partner Steve Vai, Satriani shows his virtuosity rests not only in his command over his instrument but also in his command of composition. "It's So Good," "One Robot's Dream," and the title cut are constructed with a master's sense of harmony, melody, and rhythm. Satch still shreds without compromise, as he demonstrates on "Bedshift Riders," but he also reminds us that he can compose gentle works of soul-stirring elegance as evidenced by "Ten Words," "A Love Eternal," and "A Cool New Way." With Super Colossal Satriani holds his place as one of the most imaginative and inspired minds of his--or any--musical generation. --Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars A satriani album for non satriani fans........2007-05-24

Joe Satriani returns from his hard blue/rock outing "Is There love in Space?" to bring us his latest brilliant creation "Super Colossal". This is probably the first Satch album that both fans and newcomers can listen to side by side. Gone are the minute-long legato sequences (at least on the album versions) and in comes more layerings and rhythm. The licks and tricks are still apparent though, and there is a very impressive legato sequence on "Theme for a strange world". Don't get me wrong, the solos are still there, however Satch has decided to slow things down a bit for this album. Cue some very thoughtful pieces such as "Made of tears", "A cool new way", "The meaning of love" and "One Robots' dream."

A must have album for fans and newcomers alike, however the die-hard fan wanting to hear these songs played at their absolute best should get the Satriani Live! CD or dvd, which compliments this CD perfectly.

Bring on Joes' next album!

5 out of 5 stars Soulful leads, he's getting better with age.......2007-04-15

Ripping leads, and yet memorable melody licks. Joe pops up often at guitar clinics, and I always make sure to catch him when I can. His technique is flawless, and he simply gets better tone and riffs as he progresses through his career.

On this CD, as opposed to the atypical faster 4X4 rock blues backtracks, Joe is far more laid back and loosely tight, if you will. More like mood music. I prefer this as a change of pace, because it makes you concentrate more on the leads. In fact, it's not till track 7 (One robot's Dream) that he picks up the pace a bit. He is picking his leads more this CD, as opposed the standard pulloffs, which gives it more of a dynamic feel. I imagine he's bored, and is looking to step back from the processed speed machine guitar sound of the past. Nice.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this CD!.......2007-04-10

I'm really tired of the reviewers who insist that Satriani needs to do something "fresh" or "innovative." This CD is full of great tunes, played with style, soul and substance. Sure, Satriani could appeal to the tiny minority of guitar geeks that need to hear odd time signatures and atonal solos, but he prefers to make music that a lot of people can enjoy. This CD really makes me feel good-what could be better than that? In the world of virtuoso players, he's got the guts to sometimes keep it simple and let the song speak for itself. He doesn't ask himself if the song is complicated enough to appease the guitar geeks. For example, his ballad "Ten Words" is just plain beautiful-one that keeps floating around my head-and yet very few guitar virtuosos would ever record a song like it. Why? They try to make music that other guitar players will approve of, instead of just making great music. Joe Satriani makes great music, and my world is a better place because I get to listen.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhere between Average and Mediocre.......2007-04-05

Seriously people, this record really isn't that great. The songs are rehashed from his previous material, there's nothing new about his playing or style, his songwriting seems to have deteriorated and his tone has become more 'Guitar Center-ish' than anything.

Ironically, the only saving grace of this record (besides a couple of neat moments) is Satch himself. His general guitar playing evokes memories (for the long time listener) of the dizzying heights of "Surfing..." or "Flying..." and for that reason alone, this album stands up.

I really gave this record serious listening and can only conclude that besides flashes of Satch's overall brilliance (which you'd get on ANYTHING he'd put out), the songs on this album weren't well thought out. In fact, they sounded like they were rushed. Songs like "Crowd Chant" and "Moving On" are obvious 'filler' tunes, helping this effort cross the line from E.P to Album.

Sorry Satch, I love your style and the inspiration you provided me, but this record isn't one of the defining landmarks of your musical legacy.

5 out of 5 stars Yep,.......2007-03-22

Yep, if you are a Satriani fan, buy it. You will not be disappointed.

If you have never heard Joe Satriani and like Guitar Rock, buy it. Also buy another Satriani CD because you WILL have them all before it is over.

This CD is a great collection of one of Rocks best gutar players. I've been a great fan of Joe Satriani ever sence I heard "Big Bad Moon"* (*Track eight on the C.D.)and have enjoyed many other pieces of his career.

4 out of 5 stars As electric as it gets.......2006-03-05

This may or may not be the only Joe Satriani CD that I ever buy but as an anthology it is very good to have in my music collection. Truthfully, I bought this set on a whim. Earlier in my music listening/collecting I had heard about Satriani, Malmsteen and Vai but owned nothing by any of them. Now I have all three and must say that Joe Satriani is the best of the lot. This is a very worthwhile set to own if you aren't a big fan but want a taste of his talent in one clean sounding package.

5 out of 5 stars Good Tunes, Good Vibes, A Great Buy!.......2007-03-02

Joe Satriani creates such great music for us to listen to it's just mind boggling. This is yet another great album by him, and fans of good music and guitar magic should check this out. Right off the bat he comes at us with three five-star tracks, and keeps it going strong throughout the album. Another standout track is Summer Song, which was featured in a Sony commercial. Very cool. I have nothing but good things to say about this album. It is essential Joe Satriani. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Satriani the true guitar virturoso........2007-02-01

I am a guitar player, and of course I love Joe Satriani's music. This particular album is one of his best. The first track "Friends" Is cool because of the emotion, and joy that each note brings to my heart. I like the title track "The Extremist" because of its raw sound and melody. One of my favorites though is the song "War" I like how Joe Satriani uses the Wah Wah Pedal in this song for melody and for killer guitar solos. THis album is a must buy for any guitarist. The Rock Robert Benavides.

5 out of 5 stars continued brilliance.......2006-09-13

Whenever anyone lists Joe's best albums, this one always appears at the top of any list. It really is amazing, with some of Joe's signature work, not the least of which is Summer Song, which has sort of become his anthem. This is a powerful song that rocks nonstop. The title track gets down in it, and the song Friends carries such an optimistic feel to it. Joe is the master at delivering a message without saying a single word. His guitar does the speaking for him, and it speaks beautifully. War and Motorcycle Driver are another couple of hard rockers. Cryin' is easy and more contemplative, and Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness sounds like a courtship song, something to be played on a warm spring day with your sweetie. I'm not sure what the name The Extremist means, but if it involves Joe's mastery of the electric guitar, then the title sure fits him.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Blown Away.......2006-08-13

...AGAIN!!!

I just downloaded this CD onto my iPod and listened...I had forgotten how amazing this album was. It has been years since I really listened to it and it still sounds fresh as ever. What really is amazing is the vast range that Satriani shows on this album.

Absolutely there is the crunching hard rock guitars, but the funky Why is probably the best song on the album. Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness is a joyous bluegrass inspired song. The absolutely wrenching Cryin'.

Joe Satriani has again reminded me why he is one of the most talented guitar players out there.

4 out of 5 stars Further explorations of Satrianis unique skill.......2006-08-09

Sliding into the 90s Satch gives us more of the same, but this album was in some ways the first almost totally mellow disc, perhaps the first time a fan such as myself was saying 'where's the beef?'. Sure we get the guys great playing and it's always lovely to hear his laid back, beautifully emotional playing, but I also loved the guys shred abilities. For me it was two sides of the same coin. But we don't get much lively fast paced stuff at all though that's not to say we get bugger all - the title track is suitably up beat and rides a tasteful groove all the way home. Other fave raves would be Motorcycle Driver and the cruisin' Summer Song.

Elsewhere we get great musicianship from Joe himself and the band including guest spots by luminaries such as Doug Wimbish. All up a heady brew with emotional content (Rubinas Blue Sky Happiness), freight train loads of funk (Why) and bleeding/weeping sentimentality (Cryin', Tears in the Rain) and the odd bit of rockin' (the aforementioned title track and War). The whole is held together by the strength of purpose of a seasoned professional and broken up nicely by varied genres of instrumental guitar rock for an eclectic mix and a good showing of the guys skills.

For the fans, this one is perhaps not his strongest album but then again it's a reasonably diverse collection (though nothing too far out of his normal framework). Satch fans will ignore my few downbeat comments and buy this anyway, and it is a worthwhile album in many respects. It certainly deserves a (low) four star rating within it's genre. But for the first timer my tip would be to pick up Surfing W/the Alien and Flying in a Blue Dream.

The least we can say is this : these guys knows how to play guitars !
They are simply amazing musicians, the sounds is excellent and the music too. If you play guitars, listen to these guys, then, you'll have two choices, first, try to be as good as they are but prepare to do nothing else than playing guitars, forget your wife, your friends and your social life ! Your other choice, put your guitar on E-bay and put this cd in your player and listen to real guitar virtuoso !

Swift and Magic guitar . Satriani , Johnson & Vai are strenuous musicians.

3 out of 5 stars Too much of a good thing.......2007-05-26

Being a lover of rock guitars and rock/metal in generalt this package seemed like mana from heaven. With Vai and Satriani on board plus the chance to introduce myself to Eric Johnson it seemed all was set for a good night with my stereo. And in terms of musicianship I was right. and the fact that the whole G3 concept has taken off in years after this discs release only makes me have even more warm and fuzzy feelings towards it in retrospect.

Ultimately this release is a handy summation of the original G3 tour, three Satriani numbers including the brillian Flying in a Blue Dream, three Eric Johnson shreds and then three more tunes by the ridiculously talented Mr Vai - and the whole shebang ends with three tunes with all three blokes on stage. Top stuff.

Downsides to weigh against the positives are the fact that over an hour of widdly diddly is enough to test even the most shred obsessed. Perhaps breaking the album into quarters would be the best bet. A couple of tracks per day to ensure your giving the guys the respect and attention their talents deserve!

Or get DVD's of the guys for a visual experience to add to the sometimes sparse nature of endless guitar noodle. But man, how much talent can three guys have....... surely makes other guitarists either practice harder and longer or just give up in resignation..

5 out of 5 stars G3 Lineup Impresses On Live CD.......2007-04-06

This live concert CD of G3 will impress aslmost every guitar music lover. G3 is the brainchild of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, and they add another stellar guitarist to the mix. On other releases, they've had Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Adrian Legg, Robert Fripp, and others. On this version, Satriani and Vai are joined by legendary guitarist Eric Johnson.

Each performs three cuts solo, and then the three play together. Satriani smokes on Cool No. 9 and Flying In A Blue Dream, Johnson's Manhattan is fantastic and you can here the obvious Hendrix influence, and Vai's For The Love of God is incredible.

This is a spectacular CD. A must have for guitar music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars G3-Best Lead Guitarist on Earth!.......2006-08-01

I just got this CD Concert, and it is in every way AWESOME! I am a lead guitarist also and particular about who I listen to. My opinion of the best of the G3 is Eric Johnson whom I have seen in concert 3 times, once when he was 17 years old, and at that time he was the absolutely best guitarist I had ever seen, (and I also met him and we talked about Stratocasters and how he modified his to get those amazing tones, he was a real nice person) that opinion still stands. Eric Johnson still plays chords in his songs, which I feel a great guitarist does, plus the most technical and tasteful leads. I don't think I heard Joe Satriani or Steve Vai play any chords at all except for the 3 last cover tunes, now don't get me wrong, I think all 3 were great! I have Joe Satriani albums also and love them, but Eric Johnson is a vituoso for good reason. I plan to purchase the DVD also. Incidentally I have worked with some really hot lead guitarists who never play a chord either, guess what? I don't think they have any idea what the chords to the tune are. Why I appreciate virtuoso Eric Johnson, complete guitarist. I have heard and seen him play Clapton, Hendrix, almost any style flawlessly. I have his "Total Electric Guitar" VHS,....WOW,...I could never learn to play so well (I spent many hours trying). Some people are born to be spectacular-Eric Johnson.
Overall this is a wonderful live concert with 3 great lead guitarists and great backup musicians. I highly recommend it for fans and musicians alike.

5 out of 5 stars Another perfect score.......2007-07-11

This album contains many songs with vocals, Joe is not only a great instrumental musician, he can sing too ! A very good collection of songs, some powerful intrumental songs as only Joe can do but some very interesting ones with Joe on vocals. Of course, the guitar solo are simply amazing. Greatly done Joe !

5 out of 5 stars This Could Be..........2007-03-02

This could be the best Satriani album of all time, bested only by Surfing With The Alien. It is nearly perfect. Scratch that, it IS perfect. You can listen to it from beginning to the end without skipping one track. Worth every penny. Highly recommended. I also recommend Surfing With The Alien, Crystal Planet, and The Extremist. All are spectacular. Thanks Joe!

5 out of 5 stars Probably Satch's best work........2006-05-07

I have heard all of Satch's albums (minus 'Time machine') and for me this is probably the greatest album he has ever done. If you've heard 'Surfing with the alien', this album will be no different, but Satch has many more different, interesting songs here. Straight-ahead shred-rock ('Back to shalla-bal' and 'One big rush'), some funk ('Bells of lal part 2' and 'Strange'), a bit of folk/country ('The feeling' and 'Phone call') and a bit of 80s metal ('Big bad moon'). Don't worry, 'cause Satch still uses great guitaring and solos. For me Satch is great at making amazing solos, but also making them very musical, and not just a load of notes thrown together. He is very talented at composing songs, as well as being a great guitarist. He also includes his famous double handed tapping tecnique in the beautiful 'Day at the beach' and the not-so-good 'Headless', and the complex 'hand-holding-the-neck and hammer-on' tecnique in the fantastic 'Mystical potato head groove thing'.

But also, Satch does a bit of singing now. Some may not like the idea of that and I wasn't sure if i'd like it at first, but I found some of the vocal tracks to be just as enjoyable, from the punky 'Can't slow down' to the ballad of 'I believe' they are all great, but one of my favourites is the mid-tempo rocker 'Ride'. He also sings in 'Phone call', 'Big bad moon' and 'Strange'. Satch's voice isn't exactly fantastic, but it's not as bad as everyone says, his voice is suited to the songs (maybe with the exception of 'I believe', as he sometimes goes a bit flat in it). You can still sing the songs, no matter who sings them.

So, if you want to listen to Joe Satriani, i'd try 'Surfing with the alien' first, but this is also a good album to try as well and my favourite of Satriani. It just has a wide variety of songs and it's a great 70-minute listen. If you're a fan of guitar or just rock music in general, you will definately enjoy this album. This is Satch at is very best.

5 out of 5 stars Geez, do I even have to explain?.......2006-03-29

Its Joe Freakin' Satriani, need I say more? In 1989, s**tty hair metal jokes like Warrant and Def Leopard were fading away from the music scene, Joe was thriving because he had (and still has) tons of talent and substance in his work. This isn't exactly metal, but its still great music. It ranges from lush melodies, blues, and straight up hard rock. Whenever I listen to this album, I feel like I'm playing the old-school Sonic games or watching a violent anime from 1992. I'd love to see those pathetic axemen Munky and Head from Kornhole compete with the godly Joe, Joe would behead these retards with his guitar (not really, but musically).

Best songs on this album: ALL OF THEM!!

If you're looking for some rock that diversifies in genres and blows your mind, "Flying in a Blue Dream" is definitely for you.

5 out of 5 stars Satriani soars.......2006-03-08

Guitar god Satriani's 1989 release "Flying in a Blue Dream" is just outstanding.
He just rocks from the beginning to the end of the disc.
From the opening number, the title track "Flying in a Blue Dream" to the final track "Into the Light" this is a well-balanced recording.
This is his first venture into singing. "Can't Slow Down", "Big Bad Moon" and the hit "I Believe" are all Satriani on vocals and he doesn't do too bad of a job.
I missed this disc when it first came out and I just picked it up at the local music store and I'm glad I did.
Check this classic out.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Live Set From Guitar Master.......2007-06-06

Joe Satriani pretty much made me pick up the guitar. I remember hearing the eponymous "Surfing With The Alien" for the first time and just being stunned from the experience. I didn't know that you could make a guitar sound like that....it sounded like some sort of soundtrack to an apocalyptic alien invasion pouring out of my stereo. It also introduced my to my first instrumental album. Since that time, I have picked up everything Joe has released, and always been happy, although nothing can compare to those early moments and memories from "Surfing".

This 2-disc live set is not only the best live material Joe has ever released, it is also a real treat for the fans, and a must own live guitar album, period. Classic Satch material from the early days like "Circles", "Satch Boogie", and "Ice Nine" are given the extended improv jam treatment as only Satriani can, and it's a real treat to hear these extended sessions of my favorite Satriani tunes....the addition of a sizeable selection of cuts from recent Satch releases cements the deal. Joe really sounds like no one else, and his style is so fluid, free and imaginative. Truly a virtuoso of our modern age, and a man who has great conviction, dedication, and attention to his craft. I can't begin to articulate my praise and recognition to him as a musician and an inspiration. Highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, not the worst, but solid and entertaining.......2007-04-24

This CD attempts to join the "Old Joe" (albums between "Surfing With The Alien" and "Crystal Planet") with the "New Joe" ("Strange Beautiful Music" to the present) in a semi-successful manner. In between there was one serious error in judgment ("Engines of Creation," in which Joe handed TOO MUCH power to computer dweeb Eric Caudieux...you'd think he would have learned something from Ronnie Montrose and Mitchell Froom and the horribly flawed "Gamma 3," but he didn't). "New Joe" seems to be comfortably found in the groove-driven "Cool #9" and "A Cool New Way." "Old Joe" seems to be going through the motions (for the most part) on the pre-"Strange Beautiful" tracks. If you buy this CD and burn a SINGLE CD featuring the "Colossal" tracks as well as "Cool #9" and "Circles," you have one hot CD. Listen to both CDs back-to-back and you have a mixed bag. Since I paid $16.99 for my copy...less than the cost of a single CD...I feel like I've got nothing to complain about.

4 out of 5 stars Nice mix and nice selection.......2007-02-28

I'm looking forward to the G307 tour coming up, and never need a reason to pick up new material from Satch. This is a nice addition. He plays much more dynamically live, compared to being crammed into the headphone only perfection gig. The newer stuff aren't his best tunes, but the tone and playing almost makes the songs irrelevant to me. Let's face it, I'm here to listen to squealing, ripping, tasty leads; not to tap my foot and hum a melody. I do like how he has changed up his rhythm section as well. LaRue can rip on bass with the best of them, and as an added bonus, he throws in bizarre game faces while he's playing. Sort of like a bad Peanut butter sandwich stuck to the roof of his mouth.

5 out of 5 stars Satriani is simply the best!.......2007-01-21

This is the best CD yet from the best of the best, Joe Satriani. He is an artist doing what he does best, at his peak, and at a level few guitarist will ever obtain. If you want to see a true virtuoso guitar player playing some of the most passionate instrumental guitar music ever written, this is all you will ever need. Get the accompanying DVD to see him perform his mastery live. Thanks Joe for inspiring a generation of guitarist to try and better themselves each and every day. Your music and your attitude always makes us smile!....Thanks!

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2006-12-27

As always Satriani is awesome live. My complaints with this set are the same as everyone's, the track listing. Aside from the tracks which were on "Super Colossal", the other songs are on other live cd's. I would've liked to have heard "War", "Back To Shalla-Bal", any number of songs from "Is There Love In Space?"...some live stuff not previously available, basically. Again though, Satriani is always great live.
If you have no live cd's of Joe's or are a big fan of "Super Colossal", this is a great cd for you. I also noticed that the track listing on the cd is wrong. Tracks 1 & 3 are reversed. The opening track is "Redshift Riders" and track #3 is "Flying In A Blue Dream"...true fans notice these things.

2 out of 5 stars Satch hits bottom.......2006-12-08

This is the only Satriani album that I don't go back to and listen to again and again. Actually, that's not true; since I bought it, I go back to it about once a year and listen to it all the way through 3 or 4 times again. Every time, I come back to feeling disappointed by this album.

I guess what it comes down to is that not one song here is memorable and not one song is catchy. With every one of his releases prior to this, I've wanted to listen to the new CD for 4-8 weeks straight, before I'd even think about putting another CD into my car or truck. With this one though, I had it changed by the end of the first week.

I'm not saying that the CD is bad per se; I'm just saying that it isn't good and it doesn't sound like Satch.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly underappreciated........2006-05-30

Satch is one of the few great virtuosos left that doesn't have to shred to prove his skill. This album is my personal favorite from him, for good reason. I'm not going to do a full fledged review, but I will tell you that you will not be disappointed by it; it's amazingly accessible from the first listen. Tired of hearing the endless shredding of Vai and Malmsteen? Satch is your best bet for a tasteful show of virtuosity, along with Steve Morse. (really, any guitarist who played with Purple)

4 out of 5 stars Another superb album by Joe!!.......2006-03-26

'Is There Love In Space?' is another fantastic album by Joe Satriani. Although not his best work to date this is still a great album which Satch fans will love.
'Hands In The Air' is a great song witha hard, rock riff and some amazing harmonies. 'Gnahh' is another one of my favourites from the album as it has a catchy, funk-driven guitar sound to it. 'If I Could Fly' and 'Just Look Up' are also quite good, both being more pop-like than other the songs. 'Bamboo' and the title track are both made up of lots of strange and mysterious sounds that give the album a bit of an experimental side. 'Searching', the longest song on the album (10:07) is one of my favourites as it displays the tone fans of Joe have come to expect. Matt Bisonette also plays extremely well on this track providing a very complex bass line, in the middle of the song.
All in all 'Is There Love In Space?' is probably the most consistant slbum ever, no bad songs no truly min-blowing songs, not Joe's best album but its not his worst either.

4.5 stars

2 out of 5 stars meat and potatoes rock.......2006-03-19

This is probably Joe Satriani's worst cd. There is very little creativity in it. Pretty much just formulaic rock. It's a huge step below some of his masterpieces, such as "Crystal Planet".

5 out of 5 stars Still Peaking..........2006-02-13

All one can EVER say of Joe Satriani is...Wow. After all this time, as so many "guitar heros" have come and gone...along with big hair, grunge, heavy metal, industrial, and all the other labels which have at times been dominating -- but never lasting -- aspects of what passes for rock...Satch remains the undisputed king of technical, melodic guitar music. Eddie Van Halen invented a sound and style that are as recognizable as his face -- as did Stevie Ray Vaughn, Clapton, Beck, Page, Hendrix, Zappa, Iommi and too may other greats to list. But in my opinion (and 13 years of guitar playing), there is simply no one who has ever played with such melodic, beautiful proficiency.
"Is There Love In Space?", "If I Could Fly", and "Searching" are all uniquely different styles and 'feel' of songs, yet each is totally Satch. The latter is probably my favorite song on the album, but as with each album he's done, you never dislike songs...only favor some more than others. In my mind, very few artists create music of such consistently good quality. I literally put him up there with the Stones, Zeppelin, and that small few of others who produced nary a bad song.
More proof of his talent, I have NEVER seen anyone play live who sounded as true to their 'studio' sound. No overdubbing, 35 takes, digital processing...just his fingers, his Ibanez, and a 12" Mesa Boogie and digital delay pedal.
Least anyone forget, this is the man who "taught" Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, and several other notables how to play. That's right, he was their guitar teacher when he was just a studio player, long before people who he'd for many years played studio guitar for convinced him that he HAD to cut an album.
For those who would dismiss him as a 'technical guitar stuntman,' I beg you to listen longer. Steve Vai, Ynvie Malmstein, Vinnie Vincent...these are stuntmen, who while technically proficient lack real musicality, in the sense that you never really sit down and listen to an entire Vai album on a rainy day. It just makes for great "WOW" fodder for teenage boys who think fast fingers are the essence of great guitar.
Please give this album a listen. It can join "Flying In A Blue Dream," "Surfing With The Alien," the "Red Album," and his best, "Crystal Planet" as your begin your PHD in great guitar-driven music.

After a brief excursion into techno with 2000's Engines of Creation, Joe Satriani returns to rock with a vengeance. He sets the tone by looking to Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti for inspiration, coming up with the lyrical "Oriental Melody" and the sensuous "Belly Dancer." "Starry Night" is a rhythmic romp across the cosmos that recalls the restrained yet breezy jazz of early Traffic laced with the lyricism of Jimi Hendrix. "Chords of Life" is marked by its clean, uncluttered bass line that surrenders to a tumultuous psychedelic free fall. Satriani pulls the song back just before it disintegrates into chaos, guiding it along with a deftness and economy. Often criticized for overplaying, the former guitar teacher has reined in his technique and let his heart lead. Strange Beautiful Music is one of Satriani's best efforts. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truly cinematic.......2006-11-24

There are reviews here on Amazon that say something to the effect of, "This isn't a guitar album, it's a movie soundtrack," and "Buy a movie score, it's the same thing." And you know what? They're right. This is a cinematic soundtrack - a great one at that.

The best works of John Williams and other master film composers set the mood and enhance the emotion of the scene when they're playing in the background, and bring back memories of the scene when you hear them outside the theater. When I hear the Imperial March from "The Empire Strikes Back", it doesn't matter where I am, I expect a shadow to fall over me as a very large Star Destroyer moves by overhead.

Satriani has shown his ability to create moods with the guitar in the past, in songs like "Midnight" (from Surfing with the Alien), "Time" (from Crystal Planet), and "The Forgotten" (from Flying in a Blue Dream). But on Strange Beautiful Music, he does this in almost every track.

Never mind that his music isn't playing in the background of a scene. When you hear the tracks here scenes will be pulled into your head. "Starry Night" brings to my mind a scene where people are leaving their houses and looking up at the sky, while all the lights in town go out one by one, the better to see the stars with. In "Mountain Song" I'm up in a helicopter, watching a solitary vehicle travel down a winding mountain road. Scenes will vary from person to person of course, but the effect is always magical.

If you're looking for displays of mad guitar skill, you can still find them here - this is Satriani after all. But it's the songwriting, scene-pulling, mood-creating skill that you will come to enjoy most in this album. Buy this album, and watch a movie unfold in your head without any images, or words for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars THE SONG, NOT THE SOLO...........2006-09-29

It's become apparent over the last few albums, this one in particular, that the ever present blistering and climatic soloing of Joe Satriani is now beginning to become more of a contextual element rather than "stand-alone" technique. That in no way diminishes the caliber in which he plays but rather eloquently displays the maturity and growth of one of the last genuine guitar slingers of the guitar kingdom.Nowhere is this more evident than on "Strange Beautiful Music," whether its the Led Zep/Yardbirds rave-up,"New Last Jam",or the mellow and melodic riffage of the Allmans' like "Starry Night." It seems its the songs themselves that have taken priority and thats what makes this Joe's most outstanding disc to date.Rock on Joe!

5 out of 5 stars brilliant, as always.......2006-06-29

Joe Satriani had done it all with a guitar, and he still continues to amaze. SBM may be his most balanced effort, as there doesn't appear to be that one super-hit like surfing or summer song. Rather, this album comes at you one song at a time. Nothing jumps out at you, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Everything just kind of flows together. It's a very mature, sincere work that does not in the least bit disappoint. My favorites on here are new last jam, seven string, and the deliciously funky hill groove. His album Super Colossal reminds me of this in that both albums are very balanced and all the songs flow really well together. Satch is by far my favorite musician and I will love every album he releases. Saw him in concert twice on the SC tour this year, and I hope for many more years of the master dazzling us with his incomparible style.

3 out of 5 stars Gooooooood stuff.......2006-04-21

Strange Beautiful Music is just that - strange beautiful music. The first Satch album I had bought since Crystal Planet. I sort of fell of the Satch bandwagon a bit in the past couple of years. It's not because I wasn't interested anymore - it was just because I'm a music lover and I was engrossed in other things. Secondly, I was put off by reviews of Engines of Creation. Lastly, I couldn't keep track of what he put out. I didn't know what was a compilation album, what was G3 stuff, and just plainly didn't know if he was still putting out studio albums.
Well, here I am back on the bandwagon. Once I saw my friend's G3 DVD, I went out and picked up this disc. I decided not to test out Engines of Creation yet, until I heard a 'normal' Satch disc. I REALLY had a hankering for some Satch. This disc does not disappoint. From the opening "Oriental Melody" all the way to the very end, I am very satisfied with this. I love the fact that Joe still has John Cuniberti and Jeff Campitelli in tow. How could he not?!
My favorite track off the album is still "Chords of Life" Other standouts for me include "Starry Night", "Mind Storm", and "Seven String". I also am really digging the cover of "Sleep Walk" - that old 50's instrumental. Robert Fripp guest stars here. Satch fans who really love familiarity when it comes to listening to Satch, will love "New Last Jam". This is a song that you could probably drop on any of his first 4 or 5 albums and it would fit right in. A great song, but I just wanted to point out a little 'Satchism' if you will.
After all these years, Satch still has the chops and continues to blow me away. Now I've got to catch up and get his latest two releases, Is There Love in Space? and Super Colossal. Can't wait to get the latter, because I just heard the bulk of it for the first time at his show last night at the Tower Theater in Philly. Great show, by the way - a night filled with strange beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE.......2006-03-18

5 out of 5 stars Amazing guitar album.......2007-07-11

Joe Satriani is really incredible, this album prove that he is one of the best guitar player, if not the best. Yes, there are many incredible guitar players around, but Joe is without a doubt, in the top rated guitar player around the world. Greatly done Joe !

5 out of 5 stars One Of Satriani's Finest.......2007-03-03

This is one of Joe Satriani's finest moments. He takes us on a journey 15 tracks strong. This may not be my favorite Joe Satriani album, but it is still excellent. I just prefer Surfing With The Alien and Flying in a Blue Dream over this one. They are REALLY hard to top. But have no fear, this album is great and worth a purchase, ESPECIALLY if you like electric guitar music. Satriani shines.

5 out of 5 stars This CD blows my mind!.......2006-09-12

I've owned this CD for quite a while and I have to say it is definitely one of my favorite CDs(even when compared to CDs with vocals). Like a previous reviewer said Satch's music doesn't need vocals to convey the emotion of the music across. He does an awesome job of that with his catchy riffs and screaming solos.

Although Satch's level of mastery of his instrument is nothing short of amazing not all of his music is that great. This CD has best mix of rock and slower songs. I myself love all things rock so this CD sits better with me than some of his other work(included his newest Super Collosal).

If you are intested in getting into the world of Satch this is a great place to start. All the songs rock(especially my favorite Train of Angels!). Do yourself a favor and pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Joe's the man..........2006-08-13

I have had this for a while and unfortunately it has been a while since I listened to it.... but relistening to it makes me realize what a great metal-guitar music CD this is... Joe is the man!
If you want a classic song, you have to check out "Summer Song" from "The Extremist" album. If you know any history whatsoever, you'll remember a long-time ago that their was a Sony commercial featuring this song. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars the master rocks.......2006-07-18

After Satriani's self-titled, very different-sounding 1995 album, he released this dazzling effort. Crystal Planet is his second-greatest album, right behind Surfing With The Alien, which is THE perfect guitar album. CP has so much magic to it, so many hits, I don't know where to begin. House Full Of Bullets is fun and funky, Crystal Planet breaks the sound barrier, and Love Thing is such a beautiful love song. Anyone who thinks a song has to have vocals to it to get a message across obviously has never heard any of Joe's music. I love everything on here, but my favorite song has to be Raspberry Jam Delta-V. I've come to associate this song with my little girl. This song is playful, spirited and very energetic, just like her. No skips on this one; every song is a gem. Anyone just getting into Joe's music, get Surfing, Super Colossal (his latest) and this masterpiece. Then sit back and enjoy the magic.
