Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Nice cuban music.......2007-03-15
I should add that I speak Spanish fairly well and therefore understand the lyrics, and am generally an enthusiast of Hispanic culture and music. The story of this worthy project and how this was recorded are interesting and I suspect some reviewers are moved more by sentiment than just on the merits of the music, some of which seems very middle-of-the-road to me, albeit pleasant enough for casual listening.

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.
The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".
The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.
The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.

Cuban pianist Rubén González has lived through this century's greatest musical windstorms, from the emergence of son to salsa to Latin Jazz and more. Born in 1919, González also retired from playing professionally years before this, his debut CD, was even recorded. He reemerged in 1996 when World Circuit stopped in Cuba to record for several days. He ended up making a thrilling debut. This impromptu CD was cut in a day, and its limber vibe shines for all its uptempo looseness. González plays a rainbow of Cuban rhythms and prods his percussionists and lone trumpeter to great depths of conversation and great heights of flash. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
An un/rediscovered gem!.......2007-01-10
All the musicians and singers are very special in their own singular, as well as collective right, but my personal favorite is Ruben Gonzalez on piano. What a Gem! I urge anyone who loves Afro-Cuban Jazz to add this to your collection, you WILL NOT be disappointed!
A must buy for anyone that likes Cuban music.......2005-11-28
There is a nice variety. Unlike with some folk music where after you've heard a few songs it starts to sound the same--each song here is a gem of its own. This is one of those CDs where you will like every song.

After the righteous blast of gospel that was I Need an Angel, Ruben Studdard's oh-so-secular disc, The Return, can be a little disconcerting: he of the velvet voice and teddybear looks wants to get you loose (see "Get U Loose"), but more importantly, he wants to get you used to the fact that, cuddly nickname or no, he's--lookout, ladies!--a playa. "Let me start by saying I'm not tryin' to get in your jeans," sings the man most of the world recognizes as a nice religious boy on the appealingly crackly "Let Me Make You Feel Beautiful." By the next track, though, he gets to the point: "Your body my body gonna be friends." And so it goes with the rest of the disc: diamonds shine off of his cuffs on "What Tha Business Is," a bouncy but burly club track; "To Da Crib" traffics in pure seduction ("I'm tellin' you, you won't forget it girl, even though you thought he rocked your world") and tosses in the N word for effect; and "Blow Ya Mind" extends a straightforward invitation--"take your clothes off/it'll feel right." It's not that Studdard, whose voice is in as fine a form as it was in 2003 when he won "American Idol," comes off as lecherous here--there have been far dirtier R&B discs--but he does give his sweet Southern persona a run for its money. Still, check him out: with Luther gone, there may be no smoother R&B torchbearer. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
2-1/2 stars -- Return it.......2007-04-29
One thing about this album refers to what both my brother and reviewer The Specialist said: the general public seems to only be interested in the FIRST album from Idol winners (unless your name is Kelly Clarkson, that is). But what's more frustrating than the low album sales is the fact that the lyrics on here are just awful. Yeah, Ruben is still a great singer, but that still can't cover up missteps like the corny title track and "Rather Just Not Know" (whose subject matter is reminiscent of Mario Winans' "I Don't Wanna Know"). Speaking of aptly titled songs, "I'm Not Happy" made me say just that.
There is an obligatory Scott Storch song on here, "What Tha Business Is", and the beat is wasted due to more subpar lyrics. In the otherwise decent "Make Ya Feel Beautiful", it sounds like the beat is tripping over itself, and the beat to "Ain't No Party" is annoying. The lead single "Change Me" is just odd, but "Get U Loose" is laughable, especially with lyrics like "Your body and my body are gonna be friends".
If you ever wondered why Ruben never tried to write his own lyrics, just listen to "To Da Crib" and soon you'll say, "Oh, THAT'S why" (and that better not have been him rapping -- by the way, saying "#1 stunna" hasn't been cool since 2002). But actually, Ruben does do a good job on another track he co-wrote, "Blow Ya Mind", the only song on here I really like. There is also an obligatory Luther Vandross song at the end of the album ("If Only For One Night"), which, although good, seems kind of clichéd.
As a few other reviewers have suggested, Ruben needs to stop kicking the disposable R&B and shoot for TRULY soulful tunes like we fans heard when he was on Idol. Unless you really want to complete your AI collection, it would be best if you leave this album in the store to save yourself a return trip.

(3.5 Stars) Maybe He Should 'Return' To The Studio!.......2007-02-09
The first single "Change Me" sounds too much like "Sorry 2004" to me. It's still a decent song, but the formula of recreating previous hits just doesn't sit well with fans. Songs like the title track "The Return," "I'm Not Happy," "Get U Loose," and "What Tha Business" are good, but the production and mid-tempo melodies don't complement Ruben's powerful singing ability at all. Some of the better tracks on the album are the seductive "Our Story," the second single "Make Ya Feel Beautiful," and "One Side" (the last two tracks were penned by Ne-Yo). But Ne-Yo missed the mark with "Rather Just Not Know" with objectionable lines like "Tell me another lie/ make me believe it's all in my mind/ tell me you were out with your girls last night/ and that my boys didn't see you with another guy." Other good songs are the self-explanatory "Blow Ya Mind" and the bonus track "If Only For One Night," a cover of the late, great Luther Vandross.
It's almost a blessing in disguise that Ruben's album isn't a knockout hit. He needs to take his time and grow into a respectable artist that people can learn to love and appreciate over time. Even the greats like Luther and Stevie didn't have all 5-star albums throughout their career. So just because this album isn't a classic doesn't mean it's not respectable. The Return does what it's supposed to do...fulfill the void that his fan base has been feeling in his absence and further demonstrate that he's a viable R&B artist who will stand the test of time.

The standard by which ALL Latino music should be measured!.......2007-04-10
As for the music, upon hearing the songs I was instantly struck by the fact that this did not sound like any other latin music I'd ever heard. The Lyrics were actually meaningful, uplifting, exhorting! The masterful music infused with Willie Colon's breathtaking orchestration will take you away to musical bliss. All of this while accomplishing the impossible; EVERY song can be danced to yet simultaneously meditated on. The thought provoking lyrics will have you rethinking your role as a Latino while tapping your feet.
There is no filler on Siembra. There is not one bad song on the album. My 15 year old just heard it recently and was blown away, a testament to this true Masterpiece that will live on for decades.
One of latin music's most important recording!.......2006-05-25
The reissue has all the original cover art and an appropiate essay covering the significance of this recording. The only drawback is that it didn't include the lyric sheet or additional tracks. I'm sure that someone, somewhere has to have outakes from these sessions. Maybe these things will come as a part of a box set of another "commemorative" edition once everyone involved "gets paid."
Otherwise, the sound is louder, more focused and a bit cleaner. But again as with some of these new Fania remasters, the top end is rounded off to eliminate hiss. I find that bothersome, but I'm just being picky.
Buy it!

great new flamenco.......2006-03-26
Within those styles are hundreds of compas most based on the city in Spain of origin. There are a myriad of time signatures including the 12 meter hemiolic which most common in Bulerias.
I have reviewed this and other CD's like Flamenco chill and comment without reserve that these are flamenco songs. The "modernization" of flamenco music can be equated to blues appearing in every rock recording for the last 50 years. An old type flamenco recording would usually be a concert piece from Tarraga or Jerez or one those classically trained flamenco artists. It could well be argued that they classicized flamenco which ripped out all the guts and soul of the music. The amazing picado runs, powerful rageos, and alzapua licks are all mandatory elements of flamenco. If one would participate in a juelgo they would see a cajon, castenettes, palmas, cante, baille etc...this is a letre..a play of sorts with everyone responding to the cante. To listen to this in a recording would be like listening to the sound of a baseball game..there would be so much missing that it would be a complete waste of time.
SO stop tying to be mr. know it all and just enjoy music for what it is..an expression of human emotion....peace out

Ruben Blades puts in a dynamic performance, recorded in New York, that shows why he is known foremost as a singer rather than a film star or politician. The native Panamanian has a distinctive take on Salsa, combining an innate jazz sensibility along with Salsa's inherent dance grooves. His band Son del Solar is one of the best in the business, following Blade's warm and personal vocals through every move with some great solos and arrangements. Several of his successes are featured, such as "Pedro Navaja" and "Todos Vuelven," and "Muevete" gets a scintillating 12-minute workout. With a little Caribbean influence in the mix, Live delivers a smooth punch with a velvet glove that will definitely rock you. --Derek RathCustomer Reviews:

Ruben Blades and Son de Solar Live!.......2003-08-11
Live! segues through most of Blades' Elektra -post- FANIA days repertoire starting with Decisiones and with the denouement of laudatory live renditions of Patria- cassette version only- and Muevete. The latter is a Los Van Van song showing Blades' openness to the seemingly modern and `electric' Cuban rumba. Blades' sonero voice is timeless as usual. The downside is that Live! seems to come up short and that might be explained because it is missing FANIA classics- except for Pedro Navaja. Notwithstanding, even without the FANIA classics, this album is filled with worth post-FANIA exemplars.

Product Description
From the introduction: This CD is the second edition of Archeophones very first release, which established our mission of providing detailed, scholarly, and unabashed reissues of the early recording industrys product in attractive and generous packages. With this newly remastered, freshly annotated edition, we are bringing our first and favorite release to the standards that you expect from the leader in acoustic-era reissues. To some music fans, the title of Real Ragtime sounded like a battle cry of authenticity, but the aim of the collection was and remains a simple one, grounded in the history of record buying a century ago: to show that the ragtime consumers were likely to find on records for more than 20 years was not the kind of ragtime we think of today. They were more likely to find banjos and brass bands playing ragtime than pianos, and their collections of disc recordings almost certainly had numerous examples of watered-down ragtimethe Tin Pan Alley knock-offs that really had no ragtime but called themselves rags just for the added marketability such a designation would bring. Ragtime was as much about a musical mood, a general feeling in the air, as it was about what scholars would identify as real ragtime. It was a trope that defined the early recording industry and pervaded the entire culture for a generation. These are the recordings people listened to, whether they were really ragtime or notand they were thought of, no doubt, as the genuine item.Customer Reviews:
Archeophone's "Real Ragtime" Second Edition.......2005-10-09
Titles I especially enjoy are "Booster Fox Trot" by the Victor Military Band; "Dill Pickles Rag" by Chris Chapman; "The International Rag" by Collins and Harlan; "Cohen's Rag Babe" by Arthur Collins; and "Ragtime Temple Bells" by Billy Murray.
By the way, the substitution mentioned is a different version of "Dill Pickles Rag". The original version by Chris Chapman (1908), is included here, while the version by William H. Reitz (1922), was featured in the first edition of this CD. The additional tune is "Sugar Plum" by Samuel Siegel and Roy Butin.
For those who enjoy original recordings of the first quarter of the twentieth century, this disc is a good place to begin. Archeophone Records is the premier company reissuing this material, and I can recommend their CDs highly. They have released discs featuring Bert Williams, Billy Murray, Art Hickman, and The Benson Orchestra of Chicago; along with over twenty more titles, all of the highest quality sound that modern remastering will allow.

One facet of many.......2006-05-29
The reworking of the tracks on this disc has gotten some praise, and a lot of criticism. The "Official" story has the original master tapes being improperly stored in the vaults for all those years by Warner Brothers, and after Zappa regained legal possession of the tapes, he had to remaster them, as the bass and the drum tracks were unusable. This could be the case. But the puzzler is, even if this were the case, he could have just cleaned up a good copy of the tape as was available, like what happened with "We're Only In It For The Money." Some fidelity is lost, but you do get to hear the original work as it came out the first time. And it is easy to make a "before-and-after" comparison here, because the run-off track, "Stuff Up The Cracks" is unretouched. And you can tell a big difference in the sound. The other tracks sound cleaner and "newer," but the element of it being a time piece is lost. It's supposed to sound like a bunch of old, greasy songs from the 1950's, you don't need to be a mind reader to know this. But as usual, Frank Zappa was looking for ways to improve his work, constantly changing the running order of songs, putting a new version of an old song on a new release, making it more accessable, and the like, but I agree with most of the reviewers on this site, the "improvements" were to the original work's detriment. If anything, he could have just cleaned up the sound a bit.
But overall, it still is a really good record by a really good band, even if it isn't the full compliment of original players.

If anybody ought to be hugging the velvet teddy bear for releasing I Need an Angel, the follow up to the Idol 2 champ's 2003 Soulful debut, it's the top brass in the gospel music biz. Not only does Studdard give the genre its props by reinvestigating his roots and turning in an entire disc's worth of well-loved renditions, he also, by virtue of his celebrity, will spawn a new audience of secular listeners for the music. Because to hear this stuff--whether you were raised in the church or outside it--is to love it. The spiritual build-up starts with a light touch: Studdard lays his impeccable musical timing and Luther Vandross-like pipes all over the R. Kelly-penned title track, an anthem that recalls Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly." Later come gospel-soul hybrids ("Goin' Up Yonder"), spiritual ballads ("Center of My Joy," the Marvin Winans-penned "Restoration"), gorgeously interpreted traditional numbers ("Amazing Grace" and "Shout to the Lord") and a single twirl-toward-the-pulpit, free-your-demons Alabammy howler ("Fix It, Jesus," featuring the preacher Harvey Watkins, Jr.). Capping a disc that for an artist less blessed could have been inaccessible, alienating, or worse, is a Studdard original: "Don't You Give Up" borrows a hook from the Jackson 5, but it's Studdard we hope will carry on, be it as smooth R&B crooner or a mainstream spreader of spiritual inspiration. -Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
