It's been a long ten years since Take That disbanded. Their recent reformation and world tour offered overwhelming evidence that, far from being forgotten, the post-Robbie quartet can still command hysterical amounts of goodwill and adoration. Beautiful World illustrates why this is so. Written in conjunction with songwriter/producer John Shanks (Ashlee Simpson, Anastacia, Alanis Morissette), the album is crammed full with the songwriting magic that made their rise to fame so meteoric in the first place. Far from being an exercise in nostalgia, the project moves the band in a slightly new direction. The four come across as more mature, more democratic (all members share songwriting credits on the album, rather than just Barlow), and even more adept at making epic pop that somehow avoids the cheese factor. Lead single "Patience" is a perfect example of how powerful and accessible their songs can be. It'd be a good contender for the album's peak moment if the rest of the tracks weren't so damn good too. With traditional Take That style songs (the immediately likeable "Reach Out", the brimming "Like I Never Loved You At All"), nicely punctuated up by incongruous outings like Jason Orange's folkish "Wooden Boat" and Mark's upbeat, Beatles-esque "Shine", Beautiful World sets a whole new standard for a band previously known more for their singles than their long-players.--Danny McKennaAlbum Details

Beautiful World.......2007-05-25
I wouldn't have been caught dead listening to a boy band!!.......2007-05-02
Uh...sort of.
After hearing Patience I was hooked and this album is great. Age and experience has served them well.
Take That, welcome back...for good!.......2007-04-30
The greatest boy band of our time Take That have returned with a big bang.
Beautiful World is That's 4th studio recorded album, not counting the compilations. It's a nice collection of mellowed-down ballads along with some foot-stompers and crowd-pleasers.
The Manchester boys have grown up. It's been 10 years since the time Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald, and Jason Orange announced that they were parting ways -Robbie Williams ditched the band months earlier and ended up being the most successful of them all, he does not return to the lineup this time around (it's his loss really). The overall feel and sound of World reflects the boys' maturity and self assurance. It also symbolizes the first time the boys share songwriting duties: Gary Barlow isn't the sole writer, Mark, Howard, and Jason all are credited; Jason debuts as a lead singer on the fantastic album closer Wooden Boat.
The album opens up with the breathtaking Reach Out, a beautiful ballad and future single, that reminds us why we loved Take That in the first place. The UK Number 1 singles Patience and Shine are simply awesome, the latter written and sung with conviction by Mark is probably one of the best pop songs I've heard in a long time, while the former is sung by Gary with such an infectious passion; Patience is technically Gary's first hit single in about a decade. Mark's Shine is the most upbeat song on the album with a beat that is similar to ELO's Mr. Blue Sky, with Beatlesque harmonies and an incredible chorus; the music video to Shine includes references to The Beatles' Your Mother Should Know video. Howard's radio friendly self-reflective Mancunian Way, a potential single, is a cool song that will eventually grow on you after a couple of listens, while the feel-good title track, Beautiful World, features one of the best harmonies the boys have ever produced. Gary's lovely ballads Ain't No Sense In Love, another potential single, Like I Never Loved You At All, and the first group effort I'd Wait For Life produce a nostalgic sense of how great it was being a fan of Take That in the 90's. Mark's What You Believe In is an elusive bluesy pop-rock number. Finally, Jason Orange's breakthrough Wooden Boat is a country influenced acoustic number (Jason actually has learned to play guitar and write songs over the 10 years that passed), and turns out to be one of the highlights on World. There's also a bonus track that appears shorty after Boat fades out titled Butterfly, a sweet catchy ballad written by Gary.
Beautiful World might not be as great as Everything Changes or Nobody Else, and Take That might not be as young and exciting as they were once. The album does lack the typical Take That dance and upbeat tracks along with the piano-driven ballads that made past efforts much more balanced. However, their return with this album deserves a very warm welcome. I'm sure the fans will agree!
So I will end by saying: Take That, welcome back...and hopefully, for good this time!

One of the best guitar albums ever.......2005-12-14
The production and material is brilliant as well.
Once you could find this recording on a two for one cd, with the other recording they did called Guitar Monsters.
Les Paul supposively showed up with a cold and the performance is not as good. There is more joking around as well.
Never the less, if that recording, buy it. Else, purchase this recording.
By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.
Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

As a band the Grass Roots were always a shadowy bunch, a front for studio musicians and professional songwriters looking to get their songs on the radio. They scored 14 top 40 hits during their reign in the late '60s/early '70s and their hits were among the catchiest and most enjoyable of the AM radio era. "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Bella Linda," "Two Divided by Love," and a slew of others are shameless pop made brilliant by multilayered harmonies and arrangements that liberally borrowed from folk-rock and R&B. The Grass Roots may have been product, but what great product. --Rob O'ConnorAlbum Description

2007 album from the hot DJ/producer, a culture-clashing album that finds 14 classic tracks turned on their head and recreated into visionary floor-fillers. Joined by the likes of Robbie Williams and Lily Allen, the eagerly awaited LP is a musical masterstroke and looks set to be the highlight of 2007. Featuring Dirt McGirt aka ODB spitting verse on Britney's 'Toxic' and Coldplay's 'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face' also getting the once over from Ronson, it's already on heavy rotation across the club circuit and marks the second coming of Britain's most successful ex-pat DJ/Producer. Another album highlight is the soulful, stellar Motown revival of The Smiths' classic 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before' that merges into 'You Just Keep Me Hanging On' and features the vocals of Australian talent Daniel Merriweather. please stop.......2007-07-02
And then what is this awful twist at the end of the song by switching to another great song that has a diametricly opposite meaning to the first. at least they put it in the same key and time signature. but come on, really?
i haven't listened to any of the other songs but if this is any indication, I'd rather "crash down on the crossbar". Speaking of which, what is with the video? The scene at the Asian resteraunt? This is just a little too close to a literal translation of one one of the greatest metaphors in pop music ever written.
And Daniel Merriweather is just creepy looking.
Disappointing.......2007-06-04
Unfortunately, what sounded so fresh and new on "Stop Me" got really tiresome by the end of this disc since it's the same formula on pretty much every song. The same drums, the same horns, the same tambourine.... Sometimes it's hard to tell where one song ends and the next begins.
There was a ton of potential on this album, but I don't think it even remotely lived up to it.
A tasty smorgasbord!!.......2007-04-26
Lead off single, and #2 UK hit "Stop me" is a lovely remake of The Smiths' "Stop me if you think you've heard this one before" which segues into The Supremes' hit "You keep me hanging on" over Hip hop beats. It features the lovely vocals of Australian Daniel Merriweather
Amy Winehouse (whose brilliant "Back to black" album he produced) guests on the sunny Motown-like "Valerie", which was originally done by The Zutons.
Lily Allen (whose lovely album "Alright, Still" he also produced) guests on the retro funk sounding "Oh my God", a remake of the Kaiser Chiefs song.
Britney Spears' hit "Toxic" is slowed down and almost unrecognizable, featuring vocals by Tiggers and a rap by ODB.
The Maximo Park song "Apply some pressure" is given a slight ska feel, set to an almost marching beat. Vocals by Paul Smith.
Kasabian show up on a funky remake of their "L.S.F", while Coldplay's "God put a smile on your face" gets the big horn section treatment.
Robbie Williams (his "Rudebox" album was also produced by Mark) shows up on the Shaft-like remake of The Charlatans "The only one".
I like it!!!

Pink Moon is the sound of Nick Drake cracking up. That's not exactly true--some have long thought that his death by an overdose of an anti-depressant was an accident, and not suicide--but this album, recorded over two late nights, certainly sounds like a fever dream. Peter Buck of R.E.M. has called the album "Like an English version of (Robert Johnson's great blues) `Hellhound on My Trail.'" The lyrics to the title song read in their entirety: "Saw it written and I saw it say, pink moon is on its way. None of you will stand so tall, pink moon is gonna get ye all. And it's a pink moon." Aside from a splash of piano, the only instrumentation on this stark and spooky collection is Drake's eloquent acoustic guitar. --John MilwardAlbum Description

One of my all time favorite CDs........2007-07-06
Pleasant Listening.......2007-06-01
gut-wrenchingly emotional and hauntingly beautiful.......2007-03-05
drake was without a doubt a superb musician: he was both a masterful guitar player, with a fingerpicking technique unlike any other; and a beautiful and heartfelt vocalist. his dusky, sensitive voice managed to be both bashful and intense at the same time. parallels have frequently been drawn between drake's guitar playing and that of hendrix; once you get past their stylistic differences, you'll find that they were remarkably similar (and equally skilled guitar players). perhaps the most remarkable thing about drake's guitar playing was his ability to create the richest soundscape of any of his albums with only himself and his voice (previous albums were elaborately orchestrated). it is easy to forget that it was only drake and his guitar, save for the sparse and brief piano line of the title track.
to be fully appreciated, this album should be listened to intently and thoroughly. giving it half of your attention is almost a crime: although you will certainly enjoy the almost-soothing quality of drake's voice and his gorgeous melodies, you will not be able to feel the deep and profound beauty of drake's emotions that are so intricately woven into the fabric of every song.
it's hard to believe that such great beauty could come out of such horrible darkness, and i am brought to tears when i realize that one person had the capacity to make something as amazing as 'pink moon'. in an ironic way, this album gives me hope that the rest of humanity has the capacity to create things equally beautiful. nick drake was inspiring simply because of his ability to create such beauty. his work transcended the world of darkness that he lived in, while remaining true to it and never being anything other than authentic. 'pink moon' continues, more than 30 years after his death, to shine like a bright beacon, here to remind us that we all have the capacity to create light out of darkness. i'm sure if drake knew what a legacy his work would eventually leave, his world would have been a lot brighter.

There's not a single dud in the trilogy of albums that singer/songwriter Nick Drake released during his all-too-short career. And 1968's Five Leaves Left--his first album--is certainly no exception. Drake's sensitive guitar work and sensitive vocals are backed by the baroque sounds of a chamber string group, and the platter's lyrics show maturity well beyond the age of their 20-year-old creator. Sparser than its follow-up, the jazzy Bryter Layter, but less tortured than Drake's dark final chapter, Pink Moon, Five Leaves Left is a classic British folk disc. Songs like "River Man," "The Thoughts of Mary Jane," and "Day Is Done" are among Drake's finest moments. Newcomers be forewarned: this music is as infectious as it is bleak, and a purchase of Drake's boxed set Fruit Tree might be a wise investment. --Jason VerlindeAlbum Description

Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-06-08
A lot of CD collections have been compiled of Drake's music, with added outtakes, demos and such. I think the best way to listen to "Five Leaves Left" and "Bryter Layter" are to listen to the songs in the order that they were originally presented. A lot of musicians cite Drake as an influence, but his vocal phrasing, poetic lyrics and odd guitar tunings make his music like no other I've ever heard. Some find his music depressing, I find it like a rainy Sunday afternoon...melancholy but much needed for growth.
about volkswagen and pink moon.......2007-03-05
I lived in Germany when the commercial was aired the first time, - it came on TV one late night. And like many other viewers, I was hypnotized.
Did we all run out to buy cars? No. But we all called or wrote to VW, to ask who the singer was.
After that, I have always had a warm little spot in my heart for VW, becaused they introduced Nick Drake to the world. Money here, and money there. I still believe there was a large part heart in the making of that commercial.
I like Nick Drake better than Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Leonard Cohen.......2007-01-18
Time has told me
You're a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.
How true. Now as far as my personal taste, I prefer Nick Drake and especially this album for my own reasons. I'm a sucker for virtuoso finger picking on acoustic guitar, achingly beautiful string arrangements, and cathartic singing. Nick Drake is virtuosic with all 3 on this album, so I'm really happy I found this, I actually wasn't crazy about him at first but I think he might now be one of my favorite artists. As far as where to start, go for this album or Pink Moon. This album has more musical depth instrumentally (lots more strings etc.), and Pink Moon is more tortured and much sparser, which in some ways makes it more powerful. Play this in the background while you work, then go to bed early and listen to this in the dark with some good headphones. The only con is that his music is not catchy like the 3 artists I compared him to. I think that's all that held him back. Enjoy!
The Start Of The End..........2006-12-15
This was the album that started it all, the fascination. His debut album is generally regarded as being less depressing than it's successors. It contains a lot more orchestration and world music influences. Overall, it is a lot more richer in a generical sense.
The album starts off with "Time Has Told Me", a great little tune, which has some amazing instrumentation and has touches of country music inspiration. The electric guitar part is truly irresistable, while Nick's voice is strangely uplifting. Next is "River Man", this song is in a rather unusual time signature of 5/4. This gives the song and unorthodox structure. The string section is breathtaking.
The next song "Three Hours" is the first of two songs on the album to feature a slight world music touch courtesy of superb conga work by Rocki Dzidzornu. Following on from that is a song that is widely regarded as one of Nick's best and signature tunes, "Way To Blue". This song was also the title of a compilation of Nick's work released posthumously in 1994.
"Day Is Done" continues the rather autumnal, strangely mellow feel of this album. This song along with most in Nick's career features a string section arranged by his good friend Robert Kirby, who has gained fame for his work with Nick. "'Cello Song" s probably most notable for being featured in "The Good Girl" a movie starring Jennifer Aniston and Jake Gyllenhaal. It is used in the scene where Jake's character commits suicide. The superb cello work which gives the song its name is also very reminiscent of the cello part in PJ Harvey's song "Plants and Rags".
7 tracks in, "The Thoughts Of Mary Jane" may be viewed by many to be a reference to the infamous drug marijuana, this may be true as Nick was known to be a recreational marijuana user. "Man In A Shed" is a beautiful song whose lyrics give a meaning of isolation and seclusion, obviously autobiographical in Nick's case.
The final two songs are really great. It starts off with "Fruit Tree", whose lyrics offer a chilling insight into the mind of this tortured artist. The lyrics to this song have often been used as a template for Nick's life and sometimes to describe his mental state. Finally, "Saturday Sun" lifts the mood slightly up a bit. This song features Nick on piano and offers a glimpse of what subsequent albums could have been if he lived and experimented with his secondary instrument. Overall it is a beautiful track that has some jazzy bits.
In conclusion this album is definitely not as depressing as "Pink Moon" or as varied as "Bryter Layter", but it is still a magestic effort nonetheless. Nick is one the few artist whose every song is flawless, and even if he had lived longer subsequent albums would have almost guaranteed to be perfect.
A perfect album........2006-10-16

The themes throughout this album, titled 'D'elles,' centre around 'Woman.' Many of Celine's long-time friends and collaborators, including Jean-Jacques Goldman, participated in this project. Although Goldman did not write any of the songs for this album, he supervised the project and arranged the song lyrics. Music composers include Jacques Veneruso, David Gategno, Erick Benzi and Gildas Arzel. Sony/BMG.Album Details

Celine's best si D'EUX.......2007-07-08
1. ET S'IL N'EN RESTAIT QU'UNE is a very good first track out of the album. I enjoy this one a great deal. It is very modern, and yet, has a flair of POUR QUE TU M'AIMES ENCORE. It reiterates the same topic. The "I-would-do-anything-for-you"-type of song. Very well written by Françoise Dorin, an author who has illustrated herself over the past 30 years in literature, and in movies as well.
2. IMMENSITE has grown on me. I enjoy this one as well. This is an interesting song written by a young author who specializes in writing on lesbian love. This is a well-crafted song.
3. I really like the beat of A CAUSE. This is a little different for a French song by Celine. Once again, Françoise Dorin wrote it. It almost sounds like a piece taken out of a book. Very well crafted as well, with a nice dance beat.
4. JE CHERCHE l'OMBRE is another nice tune written by Lise Payette, born in Verdun, France but educated in Quebec. Interesting choice of texts since she is known to be a feminist in her own right. This song is anything but. It is well-written. It is a very sensual song, overshadowed by a lot of sincerity meant to denote intimacy in the light of love vs. the strict physicial approach.
5. MES PARADIS is a nice song. The tune itself reminds me of LES DERNIERS SERONT LES PREMIERS from D'eux. It is a nice catchy song. It feels like it's been heard before. This being said, it is a nice song on the feeling of longing for her "paradise" that she is seeking.
6. LA DIVA is a great song, which I did not know what to do with originally. I always liked Maria Callas. Her voice is so pure to me. I can see why Celine admires her. The track is nice, and could be a single, based on her show on Canadian TV. Celine mentioned that she has always felt a special connection to La Callas. Maybe a movie in the works? The idea is out. She is proving on the last minute of the song, that she may have the chops. The song is about the despair that the Callas felt throughout her life, and how music rescued her from her dark moments. Celine has had a similar path whereby music has "saved" her from the dull moments of her earlier part of life, where boredom of school set in. Written by Denise Bombardier, a Canadian author.
7. FEMME COMME CHACUNE is one of the songs I like least. The intro reminds me of another song by Celine entitled CHERCHE ENCORE, which has never really been a favorite of mine. Not quite a filler, but just easy to overlook. I don't know the author. This song sounds very French for some reason.
8. SI J'ETAIS QUELQU'UN is an OK song. I don't quite know what to do with this song. Not bad, but I am just on the fence as to liking it. It is a bit dull, and contributes to the CD getting 4 stars.
9. JE NE SUIS PAS CELLE feels like one of Christine Orban. A bit tedious to read with many details. The tune fits to the lyrics, but it is quite boring, and almost depressing. I guess that's what they went for, as it works for that purpose. This reminds me of the song TU NAGES, which is a drag in and of itself (just a personal opinion). It feels like it takes ages to finish.
10. Written by a playwright, LE TEMPS QUI COMPTE reminds me of DESTIN as well. The texture of the lyrics seem to mirror the time spent since D'EUX for some reason. Pretty good soung. More upbeat.
11. LETTRE DE GEORGE SAND A ALFRED DE MUSSET is written by George Sand, a great figure of French literature from the XIX century. It sounds like it's a page of literature that is coming to life. This song, while well crafted lyrically (taken from an actual letter from the author to her lover Alfred de Musset), which means that it almost does not feel like it should be put to a tune. It is working OK though. Not a favorite of mine.
12. ON S'EST AIME A CAUSE is one of my favorite songs on the entire album. It is beautiful, and an extension of track 3 A CAUSE (written by same author). I enjoy listening this song an awful lot. Celine's voice is at its best. It is about the reason why one would fall in love, and fast-forwarding many years, and realizing that the present time requires for love to be established DESPITE many ailments that may have crept into the relationship. It really is a nice reflection on the theory of love and relationships. To me, this song seems to go with MES PARADIS, track # 5 on this album. The progression of these three songs (3,5 and 12) seem to tell a story of their own. Well done.
13. BERCEUSE (lullaby) is an OK song. It sounds like a lullaby too, which is great. Canadian-native Janette Bertrand wrote the song. She is also a comedienne. The only hang-up I have here is that it is hard for me to differentiate this tune from the DIVA song. On that song she mentions being grateful to know the Callas, and that she is the reason why she is on stage, while this one seems to be putting the stress on her life on stage because of her son. It is a bit confusing to me. I know that this is not supposed to be a book, but because the authors are so prominent, I don't seem to be able to separate the two.
So, overall, this is a very good album. My favorite tracks are 1-3, 6 and 12. The least favorite ones are 8, 9 and 11. The others are all good. I think this is a very original concept, which will prove to be another highlight in French music. I would definitely recommend it.
