5 out of 5 stars I need more stars please........2005-08-12

Sublime.

Need more words? I own 80+ traditional CDs and 95% are
by woman singers. I've been buying for 10 years. Time is my
limiting factor. Ru-ra is one of the most clearly "created"
works of art I have ever encountered, in any medium. That
is a compliment. There is a mind, minds, behind this, but
given the few dots to connect, *the* mind is that of Sandra
MacKay. I would happily spend what money I have if it could
*produce* a new album by her.

But understand: Ru-ra was a master-work. A masterpiece of
Scots Gaelic traditional music. If that sounds a bit idolatrous,
I may say I recently stumbled upon Margaret Callan's
"Reflections of Uist", which, along with very few CDs, say
Mary Jane Lamond's "Bho Thir Nan Croabh" ... Catherine
Anne-MacPhee's "Sings Mairi Mhor" ... I group with "Ru-ra."

Yes, Padraigin Ni Uallachain and Kate Rusby and Julie
Murphy have made comparable CDs. "When I was Young", "Kate
and Kathryn", "Llatai". And I am very glad, very glad indeed,
to own other CDs Sandra has made.

But "Ru-ra" ... as George MacDonald wrote, "Is it over then,
and yet I still live?"

Cheer be with thee.

Wow. This album blew me away. I fell for one of the tracts from this album on "Celtic Voices", a mix CD, I got the album and have been wondering ever since how I'd gotten along without it. I love celtic music. But this album really shines among my collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Maggie Carchrie & Ru-Ra.......2005-04-05

This is a super CD if you're really into pure music. Maggie takes Gaelic music to a new high with her crystal clear angelic voice, and the music is presented largely in the same fashion as it might have been heard in Scotland or on Cape Breton two hundred years ago. Close your eyes and you're transported through time to a distant seashore... no matter WHERE you're listening from. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Maggie & Thomas are wonderful performers.......2002-01-31

Maggie Carchrie and Thomas Leigh have performed for many years at the Glasgow Lands Scottish Festival in Westfield, MA... Each year they have gotten better and better and we are glad to see that they have released a CD. Their performances have always been very well received and attended. As Ru-Ra has been such a popular group at our Festival, we are having them back again in July, 2002. We highly recommend the album!!

5 out of 5 stars You need this album!.......2002-01-25

One needs to look no further than this album to understand that the creative talents of Thomas Leigh and Maggie Carchrie will be taking the Celtic world by storm. Combining traditional Gaelic songs with progressive keyboard arrangements and percussion that is simply brilliant, this album will quickly become a favorite in your Celtic dance collection.

Some of my personal favorites from this album are "Two Pence worth" and "Two sisters." The introduction on "Two Pence Worth" is a good example how Thomas & Maggie build up the dance beat before Maggie's clear and enchanting vocals have you dancing to their unique blend of Celtic music.

Another significant attribute of this album is its "playability." The songs quickly take hold and you soon find yourself humming along. This is one album that no matter how many times we play, it sounds just as fresh and uplifting as the first.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2002-01-25

This CD was given to me as a gift and I have to admit it was one of the best I have ever received. I listen to it all the time and dance around the apartment. I would recommend it to anyone, any age! It's great!

5 out of 5 stars upbeat and fun.......2002-01-24

My family really enjoy the music on this cd. We've seen Maggie and Thomas perform at a few places and really enjoy their show. There are always kids danceing in the crowds. So you know the kids will like it to.The beat to the music is so fun.

5 out of 5 stars Just Loved It.......2000-10-15

Recorded in 1995 ru-ra contains the same style music of Suilean-Dubh recorded in 1999 and of course Sandy Mackay sounds as good as ever. Evidently the group change a bit over the years with ru-ra consisting of Sandy Mackay and Doreen Mackay doing the vocals, while in Suilean Dubh Sandy did the vocals along with Amy Geddes. But whatever CD you buy, you WILL NOT be disappointed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this CD from the first song to the last. As in Suilean Dubh, every song is sung in Gaelic with Sandy's voice being as smooth as silk. The backup musicians did a first rate job especially Malcolm Stitt with the guitar, pipes and whistles and Julia Legge on Fiddle. My personal favorites on this CD have got to be Track 1) Mairead Nan Cuiread/The Bob Parsons Strathspey. This one has great guitar and fiddle work. Track 6) Si Morag with Sandy's vocals sounding angelic. Track 9) Mrs. Mary Stitt and Track 10) Caillte A Chaoidh...Sandy's voice is amazing in this one as is the pipes and fiddles.

I can't say enough good things about this CD. To sum it all up in just 3 words...Just Buy It!!!
