5 out of 5 stars FutureLoveSoulMusic.......2007-01-30

This EP has more style than any average full length recording out there right now. Meshell is an artist who is more and more progressive with each new recording; which is what R&B artists were about during the golden age of soul/r&b music in the late sixties and early to mid-seventies.
This is not music for the pop/r&b listener stuck in the right now. The tone is political, religious and sensual, while the music defies category, you can pinpoint various styles & influences within.
She pushes furthur the imaginary boundaries of what an r&b artist can do by incorporating african tones into her music. This kind of daring musical exploration is sorely lacking in the popular r&b style today. And to think Meshell's debut started on a Plantation. Buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars With Meshell, change is ALWAYS good... .......2007-01-27

let me put a few things out there now...

I'm a fan of Meshell. She's hands down my favorite artist out there creating music today and i think she is appaulingly under-rated across the board. She is a beast...ESPECIALLY LIVE. If you have the opportunity to catch a live Meshell gig, go. She is most creative playing and creating in the moment with live musicians. You wont be disapointed. I love her live stuff so much that i tend to look at her studio albums as 'scetches' or blueprints in a way...she creates those sketches and bluprints and uses them as a foundation to really create on the next level & improvise live on the stage. Rarely, (if ever) will you go to a Meshell show and here her do a song just like it sounded on the record....she always takes it somehere else and puts a new perspective on it. For me, it doesn't get any better than that.

...if you know Meshell at all, then you KNOW she is consistent in ONE area more than any other...and that is that she's ALWAYS changing and evolving musically...you KNOW that she won't hesitate to completely 'flip the script' from one project to the next...she doesn't ususally stay in one musical place for long....and yet at the SAME time there IS a consistent thread running through EVERYTHING she does....and that thread is, the respect for, attention to, and passion for the CRAFT of creating and expressing as honestly and fearlessly as she can in a musical way ...

so that should give you a hint that this 'Article3' EP is something VERY different than the Meshell album that preceeded it (which was the mostly instrumental improvisational jazz oriented, and grammy nominated, and beautiful "Dance of the Infidel" album). Just like "Dance of the Infidel" was very different from the cosmic soul reggae vibes of the wonderul record that came before it, which was the "Comfort Woman" record...which was different from...well, you get the picture.

The 'Article 3' EP is, well...its something else...and quite honestly to quote a friend of mine i think 'some folks won't be ready'. ;) Will big mass Radio play anything from this? Probably not... because Radio is too busy playing mostly uninspired throwaway dredge....which is why i don't listen to Radio. But who needs radio when you've got folks like Meshell out there still challenging themselves AND us on so many creative levels? Musically, thematically...again Meshell takes another step in her own direction without even hesitating...and if one isn't too caught up in genre's & hooks & hits, then you'll be able to enjoy her journey with her and be surprized by the enexpected turns it takes...

So here's my breakdown of the Article 3 EP...

1."haditha":
this is an intro 'vibe setting' type of track...there's an eerieness and ominous feel about it due in part to the subject matter (prophecies about the 'end of times' armegedon type of stuff). Clips from a speech by hamza yusuf over the intro music. 'Structurally this wouldn't have been out of place on her other album that came out several years back "Cookie" which contained some clips of various speeches as 'tone' setting elements. Anyway, this ominous vibed intro its a perfect set-up for the next track...

2."the sloganeer":
immediately pulsing & churning and in your face. Here the rythym of this tune is almost techno or new wave-esque, maybe something like 'industrial punk'? (i think i just made that last 'genre' up myself :). I'm not really into the 'genre' thing, but i know some people are so thats my sad attempt to try to categorize this one ;)...very straight ahead and uptempo...but it doesn't feel like a techno song per'se...just the speed and rythym of it. Deantoni Parks drumming is just full of pulsing energy. Mike Severson's guitars are churning along.(his guitar work was a highlight from a Rome show Meshell did back in May 2006). And there's Meshell on bass and vocals. her layered vocals here are really very interesting to me...they kind of float over the churning pulsing music. the lilty floating subtle melody of the different vocal layers on top provide an intriguing contrast and compliment the fast rythyms below. very cool. The lyrics are very intriguing on this one too. Its been mentioned that this doesn't really sound like anything that meshell has done on her own albums before. i agree with that to a degree. I think we may have seen hints of it before here & there, and on a few of her side collaborations/projects (though i can't recall specifically which ones at the moment)...but this track is really something unique. Personally i really dig the heck out of it...ESPECIALLY after hearing the LIVE version of it back to back against the studio version.

3. "shirk":
I lot of people are talking about the uptempo tunes (like 'The Sloganeer' above and 'Article 3' below) on this EP .... but trust me don't sleep on THIS slow almost acoustic ballad here! Shirk is a seemingly simple song in a way. It features Pat Metheny & Herve Sambe on acoustic guitars and Davi Viera on percussion. The vocals are the most magical thing on this track for me. Haunting and sad melodies. It features Meshell and Oumou Sangare's voices. We all know Meshells voice can have such a wonderful expressive & rich tone to it...so that shouldn't be a suprise really. But before this i had never heard Oumou Sangare's vocals (that i know of anyway) and Oumou's voice is just absolutely amazing as well...they weave together JUST right. this is one of those 'perfect little concise' songs. It expresses exactly what it intended to express and doesn't leave you wanting for anything. A quiet beautiful haunting tune ... a real nice compliment to aggressive track that preceeds it ... as well as the aggressive track that follows it which is...

4. "article 3"
wow...another barn burner here! VERY uptempo along the lines of 'The Sloganeer'. Love the intro of this song...Deantoni Parks drums kicking and moving you along right away, Thandiswa Mazwai provides some of the vocals (does anyone know what language that Thandiswa is singing at the begining? If someone is able to translate the lyrics of her parts i would owe ya one!!), Davi Viera on percussion...and theres Pat Metheny AND MESHELL both on guitar! (How cool is that?) Meshell also is on bass & vocals here too. Another song that is really impossible for me to categorize...its so kinetic...just FULL of energy and urgency. Different voices and phrases are flying in out and around each other, in front of and behind the music. Very cool track. I can't wait to hear this one live too.

5."eliptical":
Of all of the tracks on this EP, this one might seem to more closely resemble some of the Meshell music that some Meshell fans may be most farmilar with. Its a spacey soulful funky midtempo groover...nice bubbly perculating Meshell bass line throughout. meshell also providing some vocals and hi hat. Programming by Amatus-sami, Graham Haynes on cornet, Brandon Ross on guitar, Davi Vieira on percussion...and last, but CERTAINLY not least...Sy Smith providing the main vocals. (Can i get some love for Sy Smith?).

so there you have it, a EP little sampler of some tunes that may show up on her next full length.

By the way, for info on all things Meshell (including audio & visual clips of some of her live performances) you may want to go to:

(FYI: in case you're wondering where i'm coming from...my musical leanings are mostly towards '70's SOULl' also with lots of 70's rock & pop in the mix too because thats all the stuff i grew up on. Chaka Khans voice is hard to beat. LOVE Ray Charles & Jimi Hendrix. Love early James Brown (from his early days and into the 70's), The Beatles, Bob Marley, Led Zep, Parliament / Funkadelic. Dig some Jazz stuff too, but mainly the older stuff. Was also a big fan of early-to-mid 80's era Prince (when he was hungry and fearless). Love all of the Police's stuff and lots of the Sting stuff. Some of the 90's stuff i liked: Smashing Pumpkins, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Soundgarden, Maxwell, and yeah Nirvana too. Some more 'modern' folks i love: Sade, Jill Scott, Dangelo, The Roots, Gnarles Barkely, Mos Def, Brand New Heavies. My kids are getting me into System of a Down and some of the other 'new rockers' too. Of the folks out there today Peter Gabriel is probably one of my all time favorites who is still out there doing interesting stuff as well. And of course, as i mentioned earlier, Meshell is TOPS grade A #1 in my book.)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic hits you can watch.......2005-05-31

When I saw this disc I thought "Another "Best of Unplugged? Let's see what left-overs were included here".
I was surprised to see that almost all the songs were hits by these artists since the earlier Best Of's included songs I had never heard before.

17 tracks (10 of which were previously unreleased) in their acoustic versions where the standouts are:
Sting - Message in a bottle
REM - It's the end of the world as we know it....
Alanis Morrissette - Hand over feet
Sheryl Crow - Leaving Las Vegas
Kiss - Sure know something
The cure - Boys don't cry
Live - I alone

THe bonus here is that a DVD with the 17 performances is included which makes this a must have for all Mtv Unplugged lovers out there.

Very enjoyable and I highly recommend to all music lovers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome . . . .......2007-06-11

a must for the Disco/House lovers. Brings back memories of U.S. Studio/The Warehouse: 206 South Jefferson, Chicago!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as Vol 1 and 2.......2007-03-09

I really like this series of CDs from Ben Liebrand. They are in the whole superb. However, i didnt feel that this release was as good as the previous two. Some tracks, as has been said in other reviews, you can easily pick up elsewhere. Just a note, a lot of the tracks on here are Ben's Favourites so we cant really complain. Overall, I would give it 4 and a half stars, so you'll have to make do with 5!!

5 out of 5 stars The third volume with rare finds & hope it continues!.......2007-02-01

I never thought that I could find some songs in their full-length glories again. I'm so glad that there are still people who painstakingly search for music that are thought to be gone forever and if they do exist, they're now considered as gems. I've no regrets that I have the 3 volumes and I'm even more excited for future releases. I can hardly wait for the next volume.

5 out of 5 stars 2 rare Giorgio Moroder productions on CD, and SO much more!.......2006-08-16

12" dance collectors rejoice. Ben Liebrand has assembled a 3rd volume loaded with full length mixes, tediously mastered (some from vinyl because he couldn't find the original masters, but you really can't tell). Personally, 2 songs that make it extremely worth the price for this 4 disc set for me are the Giorgio Moroder productions: Suzi Lane, and the 12" version of Janis Ian from the Foxes soundtrack. There are also NUMEROUS hard to get 12" versions finally here on CD. Still so many more elusive mixes for Liebrand to include on future volumes, and I hope he'll take note of the request list on his website.

Notes and nitpicks are below:

CD 1

1 Robert Palmer You're in my System (Extended Album Mix) 06:00 (very rare on CD!)
2 André Cymone - The Dance Electric 05:35
3 Chas Jankel - Glad To Know You 06:37
4 Suzi Lane - Harmony 06:59 (want the ENTIRE moroder produced album on CD, but this is a start!)
5 Chaplin Band- Madmen's Discoteque 06:30
6 Janis Ian-Fly Too High 06:51 (awesome. Didn't even know there was a 12" version of this track which has only appeared on vinyl in its SHORT version!)
7 Rah Band - Slide 06:39
8 The Real Thing-Can You Feel The Force 07:39
9 Anita Ward - Ring My Bell 08:12
10 Boys Town Gang- Cruisin' The Streets 13:14 (wow. The full length LP side)

CD 2

1 Positive Force - We Got The Funk 04:31
2 Lakeside - Fantastic Voyage 06:12
3 Cheryl Lynn - Shake It Up Tonight 05:42
4 Colonel Abrams - I'm Not Gonne Let You 06:47 (too common on CD. Space could have been used for another rarity)
5 Crown Heights Affair -You Gave Me Love 05:52
6 Rose Royce - R.R. Express 12:01
7 Jerry Knight - Overnight Sensation 06:30
8 M.F.S.B.- Love Is The Message 11:33
9 Edwin Starr - Contact 07:15
10 Earth, Wind & Fire - Boogie Wonderland 08:16 (nice 12" rarity on CD)

CD 3

1 The Reddings - The Awakening Pt1+2 03:32
2 Earth,Wind & Fire - fantasy (Blaze shelter dj mix) 08:57 (this is a very indulgent version, somewhat remixed and way too long)
3 Trussel - Love Injection 07:53
4 Gene Chandler - get down 08:18 (HOT to have this 12" on CD!)
5 Billy Ocean - Are You Ready 06:46 (HUH? This song barely cracked the Billboard dance charts, and there are so many other Billy songs that were bigger)
6 Dynasty - I don't wanna be a freak 07:23
7 Herbie Hancock - Tell Everybody 07:50
8 Shalamar - Right In The Socket 06:42
9 Third World - Now That We've Found Love 08:16 (wow. This version is even longer than the 12" version I have)
10 The Commodores - Brickhouse (live) 10:26 (WHY??? A live version of an already overplayed song that can be found in its full length studio version on numerous CDs??? 10 wasted minutes of CD space)

CD 4

1 Imagination - Body Talk 06:00
2 Fern Kinney - Groove Me (long version) 08:54
3 One Way with Al Hudson - You Can Do It 07:03
4 David Bowie - Let's Dance 07:39 (another waste of space. There really isn't a 12" version of this song. This is the full length album version which is easily obtainable on Bowie's CD)
5 Fox The Fox - Precious Little Diamond 07:27
6 Fun Fun-Happy Station (original 12") 07:16
7 Tavares - Heaven (Irresistable Angel Mix) 08:35 (2 minutes longer than the original version, but this is DRASTICALLY remixed. It even includes some obnoxious astronaut voice overs at the beginning)
8 Liaison Dangereuses - Los Ninos del Parque 05:01
9 Talk Talk-It's a Shame 07:01 (this is the overseas 12" version. The US mix (which I prefer) runs 6:22)
10 Faithless - Salva Mea (Epic Mix) 11:52 (oddly out of place, considering this volume doesn't include ANY other songs from the 1990s. But still a goodie)

Part of the early-1980s great explosion of pop music (witness: Squeeze, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson) to have any real impact, an accident of fate-titled "Video Killed the Radio Star" inextricably links the Buggles to the rise of MTV. Unfortunate for the band's future, the two best Buggles tracks (the other, "Clean Clean") were cowritten with Bruce Woolley, who simultaneously released them (with less success) with his new band, The Camera Club. The artificial sound of these comparatively primitive keyboards and drum machines, once embraced by nihilist popsters on the edge of punk, has since mutated (Gary Numan, Eno, Woodentops, etc.) into the all-but-voiceless electronic music of the late '90s. Regardless, the Buggles manifested a handful of pop gems in science fiction clothing. And why not? We still read Bradbury and Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke. Oddly, what once seemed such smart and jaded music now plays as the voice of joyous optimism. Go figure. --Grant Alden

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible!.......2007-05-05

I was pleasantly surprised by this offering from producer-extrodinaire Trevor Horn. Previously, I knew Horn only for his work with the cheesy 80s dance act Frankie Goes to Hollywood. I got this album in a mass purchase of New Wave music from Amazon. This album contains the immortal "Video Killed the Radio Star". There is so much more, however. Tracks such as "The Plastic Age", "Kid Dynamo", and my favorite song, "I Love You Miss Robot", are fresh catchy quirky-synth-pop with intelligent lyrics reflecting technology and the modern world.

Much has been said about the album's production and I must say that I was impressed. The sound is unbelievably crisp and modern. It is not overproduced but is very shiny (in a good way!).

For Horn's work with this album and his work with the pop group ABC later on, I can truthfully say that he ranks among my favorite producers...up there with Brian Eno, William Orbit, Phil Spector, etc.

This is a great album filled with irresistible synthesizer pop from that era's golden age. As many reviewers have said, this album (made at the very dawn of the 1980s) predicts what would happen to much of the mainstream in music during the 1980s.

Oh, and the cover is way cool.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack of the times.......2005-11-13

This album was a definitive soundtrack of the times, that being 1980 and thereabouts, a forgotten time period for many. It seemed the world was poised between disco and New Wave, a gap that Blondie so nicely covered with "Heart of Glass." It's all about the synth-pop here. Early 80's sci-fi lyrics, running commentary on media and its place in society, and dark optimism aside, this disc is pop, pure and simple. As an acquaintance at the time put it, "It's music even your mother can enjoy." Uh, yeah...especially I Love You Miss Robot, Elstree, and Astroboy.

Its timeless beauty lies mainly in Trevor Horn's production; anyone owning this album in its heyday knew Horn would go on to huge success, which of course he did.

If you like the songs, you must check out Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club's "English Garden." He co-wrote "Video" and "Clean Clean" and the sound is much more of a rock band--and a young Thomas Dolby plays the keyboards to boot!

4 out of 5 stars Holds Up Well -- Much More Than You Think.......2005-09-16

There is a lot going on in this album than the one-off novelty of "Video" suggests -- this is a complex sci-fi ode to a discomforting, sometimes optimistic, occasionally joyful future. It's rendered in an engaging, deft mix of "new-wave" synth sounds, sterile guitar and drums, and washes of sound that manage to capture the tone and feel of this near-future dystopia quite effectively.

To me, it's a bit like The Cars' Panorama or Todd Rundgren's The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect, both recorded at the same time, in that what is created here is an insular world, a bit cold and distant, providing a glimpse at the future that, to my ears today, ironically sounds quaint, inviting, and comforting. To be honest, as the headlines today blare continuing bad news, I'm going to keep going back to this future as it's often preferable to our present....

1 out of 5 stars the 5 bucks special returns!.......2005-06-25

"video killed..." sounds like the 15 year old tracy merop singing in the song

5 out of 5 stars Trevor Horn's mush-free mixing.......2005-06-20

I'll let others enthuse about the music in this album; enthusiasm I wholeheartedly endorse. Instead, I'll enthuse about the quality of its recording and sound engineering.

It's amazing how Trevor Horn creates complex mixes without turning them into mush. Check out the bass guitar in "Video Killed the Radio Star", somehow sounding clean and muscular through the already dense sound. And the chunky, woody arpeggios played by Geoff Downes at the end of "Clean Clean". The power of the three-note riff in "Island". And other aural delights throughout the album too numerous to mention.

To hear what I hear, you have to play the CD through audio equipment that's strong on rythmic drive and is able to grip the lower frequencies. This is not an album for low powered valve amplifiers. But play it through something like Naim amplification, for example, and every time you hear the kick drum at the opening of "Video", you'll find yourself sitting up and paying attention.

    5 out of 5 stars Unmissable!.......2005-06-13

Perhaps you should remove one star or two for production values, which are not state of the art; the sound feels very thin, missing quite a lot in body. The playing, however, is the very, very best. The world will never get a string quartet with such an understanding of Mozart! The tempos are generally brisk, but it never sounds hurried. I am used to the Quartetto Italiano on this stuff, and that played rather slowly, wonderfully as such, but slowly. The Budapest Quartet is playing quickly, but it always feels easy, elegant and relaxed.
The nerve on the quintet K. 516 is very exiting. In spite of being recorded by the mid 40ies, I've never wanted any other recordings of the quintets.
The 'Haydn' quartets are recorded by the mid 50ies, but here I would like some better sound. I've preferred the Quartetto Italiano for almost ten years; know I only listen to the Budapest. I guess that my mind now is able to add the sound which is missing on the recording.
My five stars because you should not miss this - and in some years this collection perhaps will be out of print...

    5 out of 5 stars A knockout bargain.......2005-05-22

How can I review the greatest string quartet ever? The recording is quite decent, a remastering of LPs that were already excellent. Don't think scratchy reissue.

And the performance? My god, these guys are total quartetness--I just listened to the Dissonant Quartet, and there is a rhythmic thrust beyond others, no matter when recorded. The proof is in the astounding gasps--there's no more accurate term--in the last movement. There may have been equally good performances that I'll never know because they were early 20th century, but thanks there are these great performances that got the benefit of good recording.

5 out of 5 stars This album was a lifeline to me.......2007-02-06

When this album came out, I was a 15 year old trapped in a bad home in a small town in western Oklahoma. The songs and sounds on this album reminded me that there was a larger world out there. It was my own private sanctuary. I would pop my cassette into my Walkman and step out of my life for a few dozen minutes.

For the next couple of years, this music provided something of a soundtrack to my life; memories of friends and girlfriends, hanging out with my buds all come rushing back when I listen to it now.

Is the music here dated? Yes. It sounds like the mid-80s rock/pop that it is, but is that so wrong? Is it throw-away? No.

3 out of 5 stars Rock and Soul - Part 2.......2004-12-10

By the time 1986 would come around, Daryl Hall would have reached the apex of his career. This apex was largely achieved from his success as part of the duo, Daryl Hall and John Oates - which was now being proclaimed as "the most successful Rock and Roll duo in history. In 1984, Hall and Oates would release their most successful album "Big Bam Boom". They would then follow that up with a live album "Live at the Apollo" that would piggyback on their historic performance at Live Aid with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Following these works, the duo would need to recharge. As part of this recharge, Daryl Hall would go ahead and put together a solo album. This solo album "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" would be released in 1986. Although this was a solo album, the sound still followed the formula that Hall would follow as part of Hall and Oates. That formula would be a mix of Rock and Soul.

Many people view "Three Hearts.." as Daryl Hall's first solo effort. This was actually his first effort that would be noticed. Six years prior to the release of "Three Hearts..", Hall released a solo album called "Sacred Songs". However it would be "Three Hearts" that would land Hall a great deal of attention. As mentioned above, Hall uses the "Rock and Soul" formula that worked so successfully as part of Hall and Oates. He also brings in a solid cast to support him on this album. The Eurythmics' Dave Stewart who handles co-producing the album with Tom "T-Bone" Wolk and Daryl Hall himself. Stewart also plays a major songwriting role on six tracks. I think Dave Stewart is one of the most underrated people to have in your studio. Also particpating are Bob Geldof (background vocals on "Only a Vision"), Joni Mithcell (background vocals on "Right as Rain"), and the Fixx's Jamie West-Oram (Guitars). Finally, the master of mix - Bob Clearmountain handles the mixing of all of the songs on the album.

The album kicks off with the strongest song of the collection - "Dreamtime". This song was a Top 5 hit for Daryl Hall. This is one terrific song. This song falls more on the "Rock" side of the fence. This song is loaded with terrific music and terrific lyrics. For starters, Hall employs a String Ensemble for this song. There also are some incredible guitar and drum work in this song. The lyrics are loaded with some great lines such as "Rain comes down movin' you fast away", "Standing there is the man with the movie star eyes" (Hall gives credit to Bob Dylan for this line), "The man with the plan that will see you thru", and "I never saw anyone fall aprt so fast". Hall himself delivers a very passionate performance. This song has basically fallen into 80s oblivion - and that is a shame because it is a great song. The bar is set high with such a great song. While the rest of the album has some moments, the bad news is that most of the rest of the album doesn't live up to this song.

For the most part, the rest of the album doesn't follow the lead that "Dreamtime" sets. In fact, most of the remaining 9 songs fall closer to the R&B and Soul side. One song that falls on the "Rock" side is "Let It Out". I can best describe "Let It Out" as Daryl's version of an Arena Rock song. I wouldn't classify it as a hard rock song, but Hall delivers it in an "Arena Rock" fashion. It's a good, but not great song - and certainly not in the class of "Dreamtime". To some extent, I'd put "What's Gonna Happen to Us" into a quasi-Rock category.

Most of the other songs follow the R&B and Soul side of things. These songs include: "Only a Vision", "I Wasn't Born Yesterday", "Someone Like You", "For You", and"Foolish Pride". To some extent I think "Right as Rain" is a good cross of the "Rock and Soul" connection. The song "Next Step" has almost a funk sound to it. I don't think that comes off well.

As mentioned, there are some moments in the other songs. "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" is co-written by Stewart, Hall, and Hall's long-time girlfriend Sara Allen (i.e. "Sara Smile"). "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" also features some terrific sax tracks as well as some nice vocals. "Foolish Pride" has a primarily an R&B sound, but also has a nice Rock intro. "Foolish Pride" is also a pretty catchy song. The collection's finale is "What's Gonna Happen to Us". This song is an exclusively written Hall song and it is probably one of the few songs in which you will hear Hall make any sort of socio-political statements in his lyrics. The song has such lyrics as "I saw on the TV we're selling Arms to the enemy .... And men in power places are resigning ... Here comes another savior to stir the soliders in the field; But what do the generals think about while the soliders are dying". This song is interesting because in the second verse Hall gets a little more personal by saying "Does your shrink say find out who you are; Before you become a part of me". This might not be one of the most catchy songs on the collection, but it still is a pretty good because of the lyrics.

The lyrics to all of the songs are included. All songwriting, production, and musician credits are listed in the liner notes. While overall, this isn't the strongest music you are going to find, (as mentioned above) there are several cases where the CD really shows it has its moments. This album seems to be a very hard find today. If you can manage to get this CD, I would advise it.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Has Its Moments.......2003-06-08

Arriving just at the end of Hall & Oates' phenomenal streak of success in the early '80s, 3 Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine, Daryl Hall's second solo album, was viewed as the first overture in a solo career but, in retrospect, its kinship with his first solo effort, 1980's Sacred Songs, is apparent. There is some indication that Hall had to make, or wanted to make, some concessions to bring it onto the charts - how could he not, he was one of the most popular musicians of his era - but that's not particularly evident on the tremendous lead single, "Dreamtime," a swirling slice of arty new wave psychedelia that stands in direct contrast to anything Hall & Oates sent into the Top Ten - it might have belonged on Sacred Songs or X-Static, but it could only have been cut in the mid-'80s when Hall had the freedom to make a record like this. And this is a result of an artist who is given the freedom to make close to the record that he wants, with a few commercial concessions, plus a desire to make a modern record. That does mean 3 Hearts is a bit tied to the time, particularly in its production with its clean synths and cavernous drum machines, but that's not necessarily a bad thing since it's primarily of interest as a portrait of where Hall was in 1986. He's not as insistently melodic as he is with Oates, nor is he as experimental as he was on Sacred Songs, and that does mean that 3 Hearts falls in a middle ground that's a bit neither here nor there. And that means it's not particularly cohesive, but it does have its moments, the brightest of which is "Dreamtime," one of his greatest achievements. There are other songs here that aren't quite as good, but it does take a bit of searching to find them, particularly because some of the cuts are either failed experiments or just fall flat. But those moments that do work illustrate that Hall had ambitions that couldn't fit Hall & Oates, and needed an outlet like this, even if he couldn't quite pull it all together all the time. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

5 out of 5 stars Daryl Hall at his best for all H&O fans.......2003-03-16

I'm surprised by all the reviews. I tought the 3 hits song on this album were "Dreamtime" (02.08.86 Top 5), "Foolish Pride" (18.10.86 top 33) and "Someone Like you" (24.01.87 Top 57) on US billboard. Not to mention "I Wasen't Born Yesterday" that really rocks! Of course all other songs are great but a top hit is based on the billboard ratings... I would else say that all the songs on the albums are top hits! :) If your a fan of Hall and Oates because of their special sound. "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" is worth the price! Do not miss "Do it for Love" the most recent Hall and Oates album which is their best album since "Big Bam Boom". Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine.......2003-02-12

To be honest, I thought I was not going to like this CD because I didn't like Sacred Songs. To my surprise and delight, Three Hearts is very good. I loved Hall's voice when he was with Oates and Sacred Songs just didn't do it for me, but this one did. The songs are well written, arranged and performed. I don't think you could go wrong with this one if you like Hall's work.

For those wondering why Leonard Bernstein was such an important, exciting conductor, there's no better introduction than these fine early stereo recordings he made with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Critics have celebrated these as exciting, revelatory accounts, almost as memorable as those from George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra and Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker, which were recorded almost at the same time as Bernstein's. The only reason why I'd give higher recommendations to Szell's and Karajan's cycles lies primarily with the acoustical qualities of the recording studios (In Karajan's case the converted Berlin church where he made most of his 1960s and 1970s recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker was sonically the best at that time.) and the overall quality of the musicianship of their respective ensembles, which I would have to rate slightly higher than the New York Philharmonic's. The two finest recordings from Bernstein's New York Philharmonic cycle are those with of the 3rd and 5th symphonies which remain two of the most dramatic recordings of these pieces that I've heard. Overall, I think this set deserves favorable comparisons with his mid 1970s Deutsche Grammophon cycle recorded with the Wiener Philharmoniker during live performances at Vienna's Musikverein; the only exceptional differences are the slightly warmer acoustics of the orchestra and concert hall in the 1970s cycle, and Bernstein's usage of slightly quicker tempi and smaller orchestral forces. If you're looking for an alternative traditional Beethoven symphony cycle, then you won't miss by acquiring this early Bernstein cycle.

4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's early Beethoven makes an enticing bargain.......2007-02-20

I wonder if Leonard Bernstein was the first American conductor to record a complete Beethoven cycle? He must have been, and two of these performances--the Eroica and the Fifth Sym. -- were made famous as vehicles for LB's television talks in the Fities and Sixties. Millions of post-war kids learned from them and I'm one. In retrospect Bernstein's Beethoven wasn't as propulsive and exciting as memory made them. But these performances are full-boded, direct, and satisfying. Perhaps the authority of Karajan and the Berlin Phil. isn't present, but even so, Sony is offering the cycle as a tremendous bargain, all the more so if you buy it used at Amazon Marketplace. Several overtures are thrown in, along with Isaac Stern's excellent account of the Violin Concerto (conductor and soloist are in sympathy, as always, but this is one of their poorest sounding recordings, unfortunately).

LB used a big orchestra for his Beethoven, and the Columbia Records engineers caught them in a big, reverberant space. If you want to hear this music on a modest scale or with historical touches, lok elsewhere. After he decamped to Europe, Bernstein made a second Beethoven cycle with the Vienna Phil. that's leaner, faster, but somewhat lacking in the excitment of discovery that one heard the first time around.

      5 out of 5 stars Lyricism + sobriety + lucid tune = Majestic sonority!.......2006-12-31

The gallant mood, the aristocratic flair, marvelous expressive poetry non romantic and tune's delicacy will surprise you. Gould assumes another idiomatic perspective, and convinces us about his enormous sense of expression and temperament. His astonishing fingering not only gives us another facet around these Brahms works but besides an indication Brahms has been absolutely misunderstood due an awful misconception of his artistic intentions.

One of the most pyramidal musical achievements of Mr. Gould.

      5 out of 5 stars A surprising find.......2005-01-16

Brahms and Gould -- a surprising but effective match. From a performer most identified with Bach comes a recording that genuinely captures the Romantic expressiveness of Brahms. Although I knew many of these pieces from previous recordings Gould (as always) brings new ideas to the music. Of course, it wouldn't be Gould without the occasional idiosyncrasy -- op.119 no.1 is played ridiculously fast, for example.

5 out of 5 stars amazing Brahms recordings .......2004-11-06

These performances are really succesful. Glenn Gould is feel very good the atmosphere of Brahms' music. Still, Glenn Gould is a Canadian pianist as you know, so he has a character of a North World man. And Brahms already is a typic a noble man came from North Europe. So, their character is nearly same and Gould is bringing vert good the Brahms' somewhere heavy, cld and stormy but somewhere lyric and warm passages. Especially in Intermezzos. Gould's another Brahms recording, Piano Quintet with Montreal String Quartet, is very good, also. And the both recordings are highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Exquisite and Tender Brahms.......2004-10-27

This album is a delight. Seldom has Brahms, or Glenn Gould, sounded better. The tenderness and understated eloquence with which these pieces are rendered reaffirmed something I had always felt about Gould: that he was not out merely to vindicate an artistic credo, but to make beautiful music. He asserted he had enjoyed an opportunity to play these pieces in an improvisational style. If that's true, he should have improvised a lot more. There is a sweetness, lyricism and quiet romantic quality to these works and Gould brings them off tremendously. I have never heard them played better, more simply and sincerely, utterly free of affectation. There is nothing more lovely and calming than to play this just before going to sleep. (They sound just as good when you're wide awake.) Great as Gould was, this is pure ravishment.
