A lasting tribute in Session #55.......2002-03-17

As a regular listener of the Les Brown "Music of Renown" radio program, I anxiously anticipated the arrival of this album. On that radio program, Les, Sr. and Jr. chatted often about their soon-to-be-released Session #55 album, in the days before it became available. It was worth the wait! The Band of Renown has another winner here; and a lasting tribute to Les Brown Sr. has been captured in the tracks of this recording.

I especially love the sound of "Ain't She Sweet", "Dansero", and "Bizet Has His Day" (although, I do prefer the clapping version from the "Flip Lid" album). The guest artists, Jane Monheit and Lou Rawls add their creative touch to several standards.

One song is missing. "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" is a recording with a sound that forever warms me from the inside, out. The arrangement of that song is outstanding and, fortunately, has been made available on several other albums.

Yes, Les Brown, Jr. continues to create terrific music in the tradition of the "Big Band" musicians. This album proves to someone like me, who has recently re-discovered "Big Band" music, that the Band of Renown is aptly named.

An absolutely terrific CD!! I'm programming it on my Internet radio show at Boston Pete, it's that good!! Great charts, top musicians, it's the big band sound that made Les Brown famous. But, I missed hearing the signature "trumpet triplets" and his "fanfare trumpet section" endings like on other classic arrangements; Jane Monheit and Lou Rawls are just great choices! Nice sharp trumpets, rich sax section, smooth trombone choir, the electric bass instrument is a compromise, piano and guitar with Dave Tull's drumming keeps it all together just right. You can pull up the living room rug and dance the night away with these 21 selections. The CD title with the reference to "1936-2001" is misleading, I was expecting to hear some very early, digitalized Blue Devils recordings. Not so!! The booklet inside explains it and there are some reminiscing photos, old and new. Les Jr. has put together a wonderful dedication to his Dad who died January 2, 2001. I'm delighted to include this CD in my nostalgia collection of big bands and ballads.

From the first note of the recording memories came flooding back,
The Hollywood Paladium and the Les Brown Band of Reknown Blowing up a storm.. The Les Brown Band was always one of the tightest and swingingest groups of the "Big Band Era". This is one of the best recorded examples of their sound that I have heard. For a collector of Big Band Sounds this is a valued addition to his collection. Les Brown Jr. leads the band in a way that would do Dad proud. Jane Monheit envokes memories of Doris Day and the other fine girl singers that have come ane gone with this Orchestra . Lou Rawls would sound good singing with anybody let alone with this solid backing. This is a five star CD of great Big Band Sounds.

Simply the Best!.......2001-09-27

I must say that the Session 55 album by Les Brown is the best album I have purchased in the past 10 years hands down. There is nothing else like it. Being someone who did not grow up in the big band era, or even close to it, this album brings something new to the table for me. I have an eclectic taste in music, and this album is definately my favorite album in my cd player. I am so impressed by all of the wonderful sounds that emanate from the big band era, yet so sad that we do not hear it enough. Les Brown is definately an album for anyone who appreciates great music.

Five Excellent Pianists and a Feast of Musical Delights!.......2005-12-29

The Miami International Piano Festival of Discovery is well named: this two CD set offers fresh young talent in a variety of music played with all the drama of a competition. It is very well recorded and contains some truly magical moments.

There are five pianists represented here and their choices of competition entries in many ways helps define their abilities and musicality. Piotr Anderszewski offers the Bartok Opus 6 Bagatelles, electing to explore all 14 of these little pieces to keep with the unity of Bartok's conception. They are models of clean definitive performances. Denis Burstein on the other hand selects various works by Scriabin, Rachmaninov, Medtner, and Taneyev showing his penchant for the obscure as well as the well known. Kemal Gekic programs Scarlatti with Liszt and Rachmaninov and offers valid stances on each. Ilya Itin opts of an all Rachmaninov collection from the lovely 'Vocalize' through six of the Preludes. Francesco Libetta closes with paraphrases on Chopin by Godowsky and works by Debussy, Saint-Saens and Alkan.

Of interest the pianist who has become most popular with the public since this 2000 year competition is Piotr Anderszewski, but from the experience of listening to the entire group, one would expect more will come from the other four, too! A delightful set of recordings. Grady Harp, December 05

Old-Fashioned, but lovely playing.......2000-06-15

In the day of scholastic Baroque playing, these performances may sound very anachronistic. But one thing Thibaud does here and nobody, except Kreisler and Milstein could do is that Thibaud brings these pieces "alive." There is a marvelous lack of "dry academism" in here that is actually really refreshing. Thibaud's sense of rubato and pacing is an art itself(and unfortunately a "lost" art these days). This is a fine example of the fact that Baroque music can be playing with Charm. Not for stuffy academicians or "hi-fi" buffs, but highly recommended for violin enthusiasts.
