It's tempting to read these songs--many about hope in the face of potential heartbreak--as an adjunct to Keith Urban's own tabloid-fodder life, which lately reads "ex-junkie country star marries Nicole Kidman, enters rehab." But his three previous albums have similar dark undertones. That would also be an underestimation of Urban's creative powers, which are broad enough to balance assembly-line Nashville pop with emotionally fine-tuned artistry. Breezy rockers like "Faster Car," sweet hooky ballads like "Shine," and readymade big-chorus hits like "Once in a Lifetime" rub elbows with more complex numbers like "I Can't Stop Loving You"--an essay about sad courage that starts with an acoustic guitar and adds instrumental textures as it unfolds--and "Stupid Boy," a tale of loss and self-discovery. It's no coincidence that both those songs climax with Urban's own crying guitar solos. As a player, his bold, midrange-heavy tone complements his most nuanced vocal performances. Another highlight is "Raise the Barn," which Urban co-wrote and sings with Ronnie Dunn. The cheerful tune, inspired by the survivors of Hurricane Katrina, is a tribute to the durability of the human spirit--a subject Urban seems to know more than a little about. --Ted Drozdowski

I have to say, for not being a huge fan of most of what i have heard on the radio, this album has definately changed my mind about this guy. It is Great!

3 out of 5 stars Great voice...but.......2007-06-27

I love Keith Urban, but this is the first album I've purchased of his. I love "Stupid Boy" along with a number of others, however some of the songs just didn't really do much for me. I was just a tad disappointed. It was a good album but not a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Aussome Keith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-19

Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy thing is a great album. There are love songs filled with the emotions that I can relate too. There are sad songs and there are silly songs. Its is a true compilation of the emotions that we all feel every day put to great tunes. I personally feel that Keith's poetry is beautiful. He is the whole package. The passion that he feels for life and his music come thru loud and clear. Love his look, love his voice, love his talent. Can't go wrong with this album whether you are a country music lover or rocker.......its all here. Rock on Keith and keep sharing your love, pain and crazy things :)

He can do no wrong! I love most all of the songs on this CD. Can't stop listening to them!

5 out of 5 stars This Pretty Boy Country Rock moves this Cowboy.......2007-06-01

Now I'm a hardscrabble, no holds barred, put up or shut up kind of dude. So, I didn't think these poignant ballads and mid-tempo rockers would agree with my aggressive and in-your-face attitude. Boy was I wrong!

By the end of this CD, I was just twirling round the room thinking about how my life would have been different, if I hadn't been too proud to take that drama class I wanted to. So yes, there is some regret. I think I could have been a powerful performer along the lines of Rob Lowe in St. Elmo's Fire or Freddy Prinze Jr. in the ABC smash hit sitcom, "Freddie."

Not sure why a film star of Prinze's magnitude would take a sitcom role, but what do I know. I'm just a rough cat from the badlands of Brentwood.

Anyway, I want to thank Mr. Urban for giving me the courage to see that my life has been a waste. It's time for me to take that drama class. Look out Mr. Lowe!

In the wake of 2005's Modern Day Drifter, Dierks Bentley has maintained fierce career momentum, earning awards, packing concerts, and joining the Grand Ole Opry in the space of just over a year. As before, he continues to flawlessly integrate straight-ahead, unforced vocals into a riproaring sound, underpinned this time by the solid, appealing mainstream acoustic bluegrass of touring partners the Grascals. The opening track, "Every Mile a Memory," defines the album's direction, buttressed by the witty "That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me." He projects clarity and desperation on "Trying to Stop Your Leaving," enhanced by an understated, yet appropriately tense arrangement. "Band of Brothers" celebrates the quintessential travails of musicians playing the low end of the honky-tonk circuit, while his all-inclusive, courageous views on "The Heaven I'm Headed To" may not please hardcore red-staters. The perpetual debate pitting country modernists against traditionalists often reaches the same levels of intensity as in current politics. Long Trip Alone demonstrates the smartest solution: quality modern country of the moment that simultaneously honors its past. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Love it! .......2007-06-09

This was actually the first Dierks Bentley cd I ever bought. I'm a new country fan and after hearing Long Trip Alone on the radio for the first time I knew I HAD to have it. Dierks is my favorite artist and I love Long Trip Alone.
The cd is awesome! Every song is really great! The only one I really don't care for very much is That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me, track #4. But other then it is great. Long Trip Alone is my favorite song on the track obviously. I also like Soon As You Can and Prodical (Sp?) Son's Prayer. The whole cd is great and I'd defintely recemmend it to anyone!

Every Mile A Memory
Long Trip Alone
Hope For Me Yet
The Heaven I'm Headed To
Free And Easy Down The Road I Go
Band Of Brothers
Prodigal Son's Prayer

4 out of 5 stars It may not be his best - but it's DIERKS!!.......2007-05-28

I'll admit there are other songs of his I like better, but it's DIERKS!! HOW can it be bad?? Instead of just going by a CD or 2, you know it's not the same as hearing him live. The truth of his voice, like some others, far outshines some of these "polished" established acts. For "the new country" folks coming up, IE: Dierks, Gretchen, Jason or Keith (Anderson) - THESE folks rip live!!! Dierks has a live DVD from here in San Francisco I KNOW is gonna be good. My friend (the KENNY fan) & I felt Gretchen "showed" better than Kenny @ his concert. As I say on my BLUES show, "If you don't support it LIVE, you won't hear it on the air!!" Any chance of seeing someone live keeps the opportunity to record going!! What happened to Pinmonkey & WHY don't we hear Shooter or HANK III anywhere??? Playin' & Lovin' it ALL!! Donnie

I am glad I ordered this CD. It is one of the best music cd's I have purchased in the last few months to be from an up and coming new artist.
Great music and I highly recommend it.

Dierks Bentley's "Long Trip Alone" is a wonderful listen.
The songs take me back to roadtrips and good times.
I love the effortless mix of modern country and old time bluegrass.
Bentley's voice is rustic, but enjoyable.

A decade ago, country acts who sounded more like arena rockers gained hegemony on a Music Row that scorned the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack as a fluke. As in the past, many there couldn't see the forest for the trees. Both Bentley's own rootsy self-titled debut and Gretchen Wilson's Here for the Party prove quality modern traditionalism still sells. Bentley's sophomore album offers more straight-ahead amalgams of bluegrass, '60s Bakersfield, and raw barroom fare like the Waylonesque "Got a Lot of Leavin' Left to Do" and the beer-guzzling anthem "Domestic, Light, and Cold." He shows real depth on the sensual "Come a Little Closer." The moving, timeless "Gonna Get There Someday," a tale of a son at his mother's grave vowing to make something of himself, easily trumps the album's cliché-ridden title song, as does his fetching treatment of friend Del McCoury's "Good Man Like Me," recorded with McCoury's band. Bentley's lack of artifice proves his greatest strength. Again. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-06-09

I did the oppsite of most people, I bought Long Trip Alone first. I had that cd for probably two weeks before I went out and bought this cd. I love it! All the songs are so good. Settle For A Slowdown (Track 4) is undoubtly my favorite. I also love So So Long and Gonna Get There Someday. And how can you forget the title track, Modern Day Drifter? I don't think there is a song that fits Dierks better. (And surprisely he didn't write it.) Dierks is great. And I defintely recommend this cd!

4 out of 5 stars A young George Strait.......2007-05-28

Dierks has an amazing voice- something in his voice has the twinge of a young George Strait too. Dierks comes out strong with a strong 2nd CD.
Come a little closer is a great track, Modern day drifter, accompanied by other great tracks. The fiddle, guitar is electrifying in a lot of the tracks, as well as his deep mellow voice. Whether is'a more upbeat song or not- the infusion of George Strait, somber sexiness, and innocent self-confidence of his tunes makes them catching, and singable.
It's a CD I have had on heavy rotation.

4 out of 5 stars Dierk rules.......2007-03-21

This is a great country album. It has everything,Classic country song sounds, todays sound, love songs.....it's got it all!

5 out of 5 stars At last!!!.......2007-01-15

Country music is in a sad state. You either have to sing pop songs with a southern accent (Carrie Underwood, Rascall Flatts) or with southern instruments (Keith Urban) or have some sappy Hallmark ballad(everyone else). While all this is going on some of the best country music is being made without a splash on country radio or CMT (Hank III, Wayne The Train). But thankfully Dierks Bentley is getting played. Finally someone is making true country music about true country things. He's about the only person in the mainstream who don't make me dry heave. If you don't think this is as country as it gets, go listen to some Cowboy Troy and reevaluate your life.

5 out of 5 stars A new singer added to my favorites list.......2006-07-06

I bought this album blindly. What I mean is I bought it because I'd heard one or two songs on the radio from it that I liked. I do that sometimes-if an artist has two or three songs I like, I usually buy that album because I know the rest of the songs will most likely be just as good. This album is the same. I'd heard "A Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do" and "Come A Little Closer" on the radio and liked them. Then came "Settle For A Slowdown," which became an instant hit for me. I had to try this album, and I'm glad I did. It's a very good album with an equal amount of upbeat songs to ballads. Not to mention the very funny monologues in a few of the songs. Also, another gem on the album that was not released as a single (yet) is the title track, "Modern Day Drifter." It could very possibly be the best song on the album. Buy it, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.......2007-03-09

Juice Newton is one of the best counry-pop singers of all times. A great energetic voice and some real unforgettable songs.
My personal favourites include the beautiful Angel Of The Morning, the rollicking Queen of Hearts and the strong and sorrowful It's A Heartache
After all these years, her work is unforgettable, catchy and full of energy and vibe.

4 out of 5 stars Juice's Greatest.......2007-01-27

I saw Juice Newton in concert way back when Angel of the Morning first came out and I was blown away by the purity of her voice. I remember it gave me goosebumps. So I was browsing through Amazon and came across this greatest hits cd and figured it was time to update the handful of vinyl albums I own. This cd has all her major hits and its great to hear that marvelous voice without all those pops and clicks of my old vinyl. And it may just be my old ears, but I swear the songs on this cd sound like re-recordings...not the originals. I could be wrong, but I've heard Heart of the Night hundreds of of times and on this cd, her voice sounds just a shade older. Even so, the songs still sound great and this is highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Hits and others.......2007-01-19

I wanted the hits, I got them and some others I don't remember on this album. Great to have the hits...guess I'll save my opinion on the others until I figure out whether I really like them or not.

5 out of 5 stars Juice Newton-Greatest Hits.......2007-01-08

Very Good CD well worth the price. She is a very good singer she
reminds me of Janie Frickie. She sings country and pop and baled
I really like this CD it has a bunch of here hits on it and some
that I have not heard before very nice.

Sincerely, Jason or Peter Pielak.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Heartfelt Singing!.......2006-08-04

Juice Newton is a great singer. Her verson of "Love has been a little bit hard on me" sounds like she is singing from her own experience. This lady really makes you "feel" the sadness or joy about which she sings! I guess she might be retired by now but her heartfelt singing and wonderful songs live on! You'll enjoy this one! If you think you've heard Handel's "Ombra mai fu" (known as his "Largo") so often, and in so many different arrangements, and sung by so many different voices, that you can no longer be moved or surprised by it, think again. This CD of Handel arias, mostly from his Theodora or the cantata La Lucrezia, ends with "Ombra mai fu," and as sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it is so tender, so beautiful, so impeccably shaded, that you'll think you're hearing it for the first time. But that's only four of this disc's 67 minutes---a follow-up to Hunt Lieberson's extraordinarily successful CD of Bach cantatas. There's not a dull or disinterested moment to be heard anywhere. As the violated Lucrezia, Hunt Lieberson alternately rages against the man who raped her and turns her grief inward; the former is terrifying in its intensity, the latter makes us almost feel as if we're eavesdropping. The five arias for Irene, Theodora's friend, confidante, and the upholder of Christian beliefs are all magical prayers or statements of faith, and from Hunt Lieberson, they become real, with each word honestly conveyed and colored. The voice itself is unfailingly beautiful---warm, lush, never forced, agile when necessary---and her breath control is stunning. She is backed ideally by Harry Bicket and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the string soloists in the ensemble---the viola da gamba player, lutenist, etc.---are as gifted as she is. If you want proof that Handel was a great dramatist with a special gift for communicating emotion, all while listening to sublime sounds, this CD is a must. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Singer........2007-03-07

I simply don't have the heart to review Mrs. Lieberson's works.
If we call Ms. Bartoli a 'great' singer, then the description of 'legendary' more aptly depicts Mrs. Lieberson.
If ever a truly good artist lived, Mrs. Lieberson is one such.
The only singer that could be recalled singing in such style is Teresa Berganza; but still, they are different.
This is one of my favourite interpretators of Haendel. Having been 'treated' by those coloraturas of arias of Haendel's period by Ms. Bartoli and others, I find the singing of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson a great relief - at last, this is what Haendel would want it to be. And I equally enjoy the singing of soprano arias by Mrs. Lieberson - the timbre is warmer, but still with all the shimmer - so different from the dark mushy tones of other celebrated 'lyrical soprano' around.
Don't want to say more. Mrs. Lieberson's leaving last year is too heavy a news for me.

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's Bach: The mind of God revealed!!.......2007-01-06

These deeply felt performances of two of Bach's most moving cantatas show this transcendent singer's combination of emotional honesty and profound musicality, all combined to reveal the very mind of God through divine redemption from suffering. The disc is to be treasured even more in light of the Ms. Lieberson's recent untimely death from cancer. I'm an agnostic, but this music makes me envious of those who can believe. Roy in Pope Valley, California

5 out of 5 stars Glorious singing to treasure for decades.......2006-07-11

By any measure, America's Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is at least the equal of Italy's premier diva, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, although she does not have the same superstar status. It is difficult to recall past mezzos with clearer enunciation of English text, (as favoured in nine excerpts from Theodora), the richness of voice, displayed in full-throated fortissimo and sharply contrasted pianissimo of utmost delicacy, evokes fondest memories of the tragically doomed Kathleen Ferrier. Masterfully chosen to display every facet of Hunt Lieberson's consumate command of Handel's dauntingly difficult music, the disc's repertoire - recitatives and linkig arias from the operas Theodora and Serse, and the cantana La Lucrezia - is stunning. An unsung mezzo who makes the senses tingle!

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson (1954-2006), supreme Handelian.......2006-07-06

I have never heard a voice purer of tone, more flexible in phrasing, and so gorgeously produced in a homogeneous column of sound such as this artist in Handel's repertoire. It is very tastefully sung (unlike a certain person whose name begins with R and ends with enaaay Fleming) and so dramatically touching that one could not help but feel that this repertoire finally has found its instrument. And how sad it is to know that this instrument has passed away two days ago. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson died two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico of breast cancer. It is such a huge loss to the opera world, as she is an artist who is still experiencing the prime of her career. The voice is just so beautiful, the tone so pure, that I lament that we can no longer hear any great roles from this artist. She will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The Stellar Hunt Lieberson.......2006-03-19

Simply put, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is one of the very best classical singers alive. She combines vocal elegance and purity with an emotional delivery that raises her above the crowd of technically proficient singers who just don't possess her depth of musical understanding or emotional commitment. Hunt Lieberson is a true artist who resists easy classfication except to say she is perfect in what she does.

Newcomer Eric Church, the pride of Granite Falls, North Carolina, arrives with his first album--on which he wrote or co-wrote all 12 cuts--as a man worth watching. Sinners Like Me puts down roots in traditional country, and judging from its first single ("How 'Bout You"), Church might seem like a modern-day Charlie Daniels, crowing about blue-collar pride and covering his heart "when they fly that red, white, and blue." But several songs show him to be acutely aware of class lines and how the country is divided more into haves and have-nots than red and blue, and Church is no jingoistic redneck. He doesn't shy away from controversial subjects--the capital punishment of "Lightning" and the casual sex/pregnancy of "Two Pink Lines" may bring Steve Earle to mind--and his thoughtful, sensitive, and well-crafted songs, delivered in a hard-bitten baritone, show him to be as much poet as patriot. If "Pledge Allegiance to the Hag" (featuring a cameo by Merle Haggard himself) seems a bit too easy a reach, "The Hard Way," about the kind of regrets that forever haunt one's dreams, finds this Church spreading the much-needed gospel of honor and accountability. An impressive debut. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Rarely does a singer/songwriter reveal as much honesty and assurance as Eric Church does on his debut album. Musically and lyrically, "Sinners Like Me" is this young North Carolina native's sonic autobiography--bone-rattling country rockers that speak of his roots and upbringing, reflective story-songs that reveal a songwriter wise beyond his years, and above all, an artist who knows who he is, and brings all his passion, intellect and talents to this debut project.

2 out of 5 stars Shows Potential.......2007-07-11

Eric Church shows alot of potential on his first major label debut Sinners Like Me. Unfortunatly though, this record seems to be all over the place. It's almost as if Church has no idea what he wants to be. Some of these songs are molded in the vein of contemporary country (think keith urban or rascal flatts), while others are more "traditional" (think stuff that doesn't get played on your local hot country station). Even still, most of these songs add a southern rock vibe, which throws everything off all together. Now, none of this would be bad if Church could actually pull it off, but more often than not, he can't. Lyrically, the material here is pretty strong, but lyrics alone can't make an entire song. Hopefully Church will come out with something a bit more focused next time around.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Church.......2007-06-27

He's a rising star. I love his music. Creative and just plain wonderful to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Good ole country music.......2007-02-15

I recently bought the album "Sinners Like Me" and let me tell ya, it's a good one!!!! I liked what I heard on the radio: "How 'bout You" and "Two Pink Lines", so thought I'd give it a shot. Those songs are great, but there are actually others that I like even better!! The first lyrics of the first track really open the album well: "I believe that gas is too damn high, ain't nothin' more American than Momma's apple pie..." I'm not going to preview each track for you, but I will tell you that there are several stand out tracks: "Before She Does" "Sinners Like Me" "What I almost Was" "The Hard Way" and "Livin' Part of Life" Those are just my favorites, the other tracks are great too!!! If you like good ole real country music, you'll like this album. Church has a great voice and this album is well produced. It's got some slower songs as well as some upbeat party songs that'll really get your boots tapping along. If "Livin' Part of Life" doesn't make you want to sing along or get up and karaoke, there's something wrong with you!! It's a really fun, easy song that's hard not to like!!!! This cd will make you forget your worries for 47 minutes Preview the tracks and you'll see what I mean. Fun cd all around!!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but better live in concert.......2007-01-15

I saw Eric Church live in concert. He was the opening act. I though he was so good that I wanted to get his CD. I don't buy a lot of CDs for myself. I have to like over half the songs before I will waste my money. I loved every song he sang. When I played the CD, it was okay, but let me tell you Eric Church sounds so much better live in concert then on CD. It's usually the other way around.

5 out of 5 stars a great suprise.......2007-01-11

I orginally saw Eric as a warm up for a Bob Seger concert. I liked what I heard but like any other concert was too loud to make out lyrics. So I thought what the heck and bought his cd. I liked it at first but the more I played the more I liked. This guy is good .He writes his own songs and for his youth he seems to have experience beyond his years. I bought the cd for the song Sinners Like Me and These Boots.I swear his song Two Pink Lines reminds me of Mellancamp. I think he is going to be a rising star and look forward to his next work.

The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as "Death by Triple Fiddle" or on mellow, almost New Agey instrumentals such as "Sliding Down" (featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo), these musicians excel. Guest vocals by James Taylor and Alison Krauss break up the instrumentals, though instrumental virtuosity is the real highlight of this disc. If you like what you hear on this sampler, check out the Grammy Award-winning Appalachian Journey next. --Jason Verlinde

Heartland is a haven and a piece of heaven. I was transported.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-03-16

Great violin, appalachian music, brings out your country roots, beautiful song by Allison Krauss, good mix of slow and up beat songs, excellent cd!

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a yawn-er.......2003-04-22

If you are planning to open up a high-end gift shop specializing in handcrafted wind chimes and micro-bakery scone mixes and the like, then you must have this CD playing for your customers. It might have a certain appeal there that it did not find in my living room. Not to say that the musicianship is not utterly outstanding, which it is most certainly. Aside from Short Trip Home, which is why I purchased this CD in the first place, I found the rest of the pieces somewhat vapid considering the caliber of the artists. Again, it has its appeal in an easy listening realm, but this was not what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisitely good music!.......2002-05-04

Didn't expect an outstanding cd, don't know exactly why i got it,maybe because of yo yo and bela, but every piece is played
beautifully, even the vocal piece by James Taylor. The album is almost too good to be called Heartland, every piece is a class act. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2001-11-09

I drive alot commuting to and from my job. This music has served as the perfect backdrop to an lovely Indiana fall! I'm sure I'll recall those colorful images as I continue to listen to this CD through the colorless days of winter!

It's no surprise that the best cuts on Songs About Me are produced by Scott Hendricks, the man who gave Trace Adkins his major-label deal and best understands the psyche of a 6-foot-6 Louisianan with a past full of close calls, high emotions, and deep soul searching (getting shot and nearly dying, later going to rehab). Adkins, with his tender-tough, bottom-of-the-riverbed baritone, sings country music because he's lived its eventful story songs. That's something he celebrates in the title song, which deftly lays out the reasons for the genre's popularity, even to folks who wouldn't ordinarily gravitate to the twangy side of the radio dial. Perhaps anyone could make that song a hit, but it takes a singer of far more subtlety to deliver the incredibly well-written (by Jeremy Spillman and Dave Turnbull) "Arlington," a uniquely different type of war song. Elsewhere, Adkins runs the gamut of themes, from the heartfelt ballad "I Learned How to Love from You" to the randy "Baby I'm Home" to the high-octane "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" (produced by Dann Huff). If some of it seems like awfully familiar territory, Adkins elevates it to the art of blue-collar soul. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Listening and Watching Trace always makes me happy........2007-06-27

He is a wonderful entertainer and all these songs are great. If you love country music like I do, then you will enjoy this CD, "Songs About Me". Trace is one of those entertainers who does his own thing and enjoys doing it. You can tell that when you see him in concert and you can tell that when you listen to this CD. Any country music fan would enjoy all the music.

1 out of 5 stars Music for the imbred or those that just have no clue.......2007-05-09

There is so much to say about this album. Unfortunatly nothing good.

To those who are harping on that poor woman who calls Trace and Toby 'exploiters', she is exactly right. There is no glory or honor in an illegal war. People who are in suits are making a lot of money off exploiting the military. Why do I say this? For those who don't know me I am a US Marine and I am on my second tour of Iraq. My own personal opinion is that songs like 'Arlington' make me want to vomit. 90% of the businesse that hang their 'We support the Troops' banners in military towns don't care two cents about us, they just want our money. The same goes with these heart tugging patriotic songs sung by people who have no clue what we go through. All they know about Iraq is coming over here and being treated ike a VIP and having their butts kissed by the brass. If Trace sinerely appreciates the troops fine, but let me give him and all the rest of you some advice. I (and others who serve) are sick of hearing it, because most of it is fake. Don't sing a song and laugh your way to the bank at my expense. Enough of that.

The title track 'Songs about me'? I agree with a fellow reviewer. Trace lost any credibility he had to sing a song like this that was written by someone else. The writer could have gotten Tim McGraw to sing this. This is a paint by numbers tune that has no merit or any form of sincerity. So he sings 'Songs about me' which could have been titled "Written for me" or "Songs about anybody needing a hit". And I'm supposed to beieve this guy believes in a song like Arlington? This is like Stephen King asking Dean Koontz to write his autobiography.

Now let's get to the song that made thi album a success, "Hony Tonk Badonkydonk". The first time I heard this I thought it was Weird Al Yankovic with a cold. When I found out it was a serious song written by a serious(?) country musician, I didn't know whether to laugh or wonder if the guy was on crack. "Got it goin' on like Donkey Kong?" "Whoo-wee slap your grandma"? I find it hard to believe that this song was written, produced, performed, and recorded by adults. This is not country folks, this isn't even white trash trailer music, I don't know what the heck this is. The best way I can describe this is that "Honkytonkbadonkeydonk" is the "Achy-Breaky Heart" of the 21st Century.

1 out of 5 stars oh man this is just terrible.......2007-04-21

It's really funny that the title track of "Songs About Me" is written by...somebody else. Lots of artistic merit there, kids.

This is really bad music. All of it. Overly slicky, crappy production, digitized to the nth degree, bad singing, cheesy playing, horredous songs about as far removed from country music as humanly possible. The only thing that qualifies this album/artist as "country" is that it shares the same redneck attitudes with most modern country fans.

This isn't really a direct attack on Trace Adkins: he's just a perfect symbol of the current state of mainstream country music--an artist whose songs are hollow and without value, sold to people who don't know any better under the false pretense that this is the kind of music that speaks to, or for, them. Which is a real tragedy. Country music, when it reaches its highest peaks, is a great and beautiful art form. But this guy and his dozens of behatted and sleeveless bretheren, well, they just make my soul hurt. Selah.

4 out of 5 stars Songs About Me, Oh Yeah.......2007-02-07

Ok, I admit that I have fallen in love with Trace's voice, it is just one of those raspy, deep voices that makes me melt, the fact that he is tall and not hard on the eyes doesn't hurt either. After hearing the first single, Songs About Me, off his new CD on the radio got me excited about the new music coming out and he didn't disappoint. From the title track to the final Honky Tonk Badonkadonk this CD is full of ballads and fun songs that Trace does so well. His emotions come thru on his songs.

5 out of 5 stars My First Trace Adkins CD.......2007-01-09

I've always enjoyed Trace Adkins' music but had never bought any of his CD's. When I bought this I knew there were several songs I would enjoy, but there were others I'd never heard before so it was a bit risky. Since then, I've bought two other Trace Adkins CD's but still enjoy this one the best!

3 out of 5 stars Good popular music........2005-08-14

The interesting issue about this recording is that Williams himself directs. It is always a plus to listen to music played by its author. Average performance by the orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Still great!.......2005-07-23

John Williams has the magic of translating music from movies. Even not watching the movies themselves, you can still understand what's happening because of the music that comes with it.

I'm happy the music industry compiled this marvellous CD together. It has all the greatest hits like Luke and Leia, Indiana Jones march and the star wars main theme. These songs are really some of the great examples of Williams' finest.

Even if the music isn't really that clear in movies, it's still gives a great impact on the stories. If you watch a movie made up of only dialogues and fights, what's the thrill, we can see fights anytime anywhere. So the element that makes the movies really attractive and interesting is the music itself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performances as well as Music.......2005-04-06

When I picked up this CD I was amazed. I am a big Williams fan and love the Boston Pops. All the pieces are well done and flawless (except for some small tempo issues in "1941") Though all the peices stand out the handsdown best is "The Cowboys" Overture. The ritch sound as well as the great musicmanship make this a joy to here. Another good highlight is the "Midway" March. Midway was a relitivley underated score being in the middle of "Jaws" and "Star Wars" (Both of witch are also on the CD but, Jaws could have had solid feeling but is otherwise performed rather great) The rousing March in my opinion is as rousing as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Superman" (Both yet again are on the CD and Superman's opening is absolutly breathtaking even better than the actual soundtrack. The Trumpet and French Horn fanfare makes you yourself visualize the might of the man of steel himself. But the Midway march is given a stunning representaion with the ritch, lush sound of the Boston Pop's brass section. The CD also has some of John Williams music for the concert stage such as the well known Olympic Fanfare (1984 Los Angeles), The Liberty Fanfare as well as the Mission Theme (The NBC news anthem) all offer a nice break from the movie scores. The only down side to the CD is that because it was made in 1987 it doesn't have music from Hook, Far and Away, Schindler's List and of course Jurassic Park. But even though it lacks Williams' early 90's scores its always a Joy to listen to as well as a treat for the ears. So i give it two thumbs up and *****.
I advise any John Williams/Boston Pops fan not to let this gem slip through their fingers! ;)

5 out of 5 stars De Williams los Boston lo mejor..........2004-12-14

Grandioso.

5 out of 5 stars Williams at His Finest....as of 1987.......2003-07-13

For fans looking for a sampler of John Williams' music circa 1987, this CD is a treasure trove of selected movie and special occasion themes. While not as comprehensive as Sony Classical's Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collection, there is enough variety to satisfy even the most casual Williams fan. Included here among his famous themes (Star Wars, ET, Superman, and Raiders of the Lost Ark) are his 1984 Olympic Fanfare, "The Mission" (NBC News theme), and the rousing Overture to the John Wayne film The Cowboys. As always, the Boston Pops Orchestra shines under the baton of Hollywood's -- and America's -- favorite composer!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

5 out of 5 stars Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

5 out of 5 stars How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!
