On their fourth full-length studio release, Ozomatli serve up a rhythmically seething musical mélange that serves as virtual mirror to the dizzying cultural contradictions at the heart of their Los Angeles hometown, wrapping it in a studio-polished veneer (largely courtesy of Santana/Ricky Martin producer KC Porter) that only underscores their intriguing reflections. They wear their civic pride as badge of honor on the gritty "City of Angels," a hip-hop-funk-fusion anthem that courses straight from the street to the stars. The joyous "La Temperatura," a tribute to the city's pro-immigrant marches of '06, picks up the local thread and weaves it into the band's longstanding social conscience, one they focus on Washington's inept response to Hurricane Katrina via the savory, N'Awlinz-meets-Norwalk swagger of "Magnolia Soul." The title track hints at a few conquered personal demons, while the sultry, Los Lobos-esque Spanish ballad "Violeta," the infectious 80s-ska-funk-meets-00s-punk-pop of "When I Close My Eyes," and the hip-hop-jarocho stew "La Segundo Mano" (featuring Queztal's Martha Gonzales on vocals) stand as vibrantly disparate testaments to the band's true range of pan-cultural musical fervor and accomplishments. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

If Roast Beef of Old England isn't enough to spawn a dose of contact scurvy, many other of these two dozen salty tunes will set the boat a-rocking. Treasures such as "A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War" and "Drops of Brandy" detail life among British seamen of the early 1800s without dredging up too much of the usual pirates, shipwrecks, or mutiny. It's an historical document of the regular life at sea, inspired by the British Navy novels of Patrick O'Brian, with intentions to anchor the writing in the ordinary sounds and stories of those fictionalized seafaring times. Glad fiddle, fife, and Jerry Bryant's humble six-man choral crew Starboard Mess spill the beans in suitable fashion without a sailor's colorful vocabulary. They supply the "yo ho ho" and annotations, you bring the rum and black powder. --Ian ChristeCustomer Reviews:
Set Sail With These Great Songs.......2007-01-28
You should see the looks I get from the little wannabe thugs in their tricked out Hondas listening to hip-hop when I pull up next to them in my conservative white Toyota Camry and I'm belting out lines like "We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors...." Jay-Z can't even hold a candle to these wonderful old tunes.
Highly recommended.

Continuing Enjoyment.......2006-05-05
Being a 'younger' person with generally 'younger' preferences in music, and yet still a person thoroughly devoted to Patrick O'Brian and all his works, on first listening I was doubtful.
Another two or three spins around the CD player, though, and I was hooked. Crisp, clear and obviously as historically accurate as they can be, these songs give delight even now.
Best use? Volume dialled up to eleven for the morning drive to work, bellowing along at the top of my voice - and often the bottom of my range! Heart of Oak, Roast Beef of Old England, The Shannon and the Chesapeake - uproarious. Sailor's Jacket is the foot-tappingest instrumental; it still sets my toes a-jumping. And the sweeter songs? Give them plenty of wellie .. Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy is fabulous.
Other big numbers: A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War, A New Sea Song (Sweethearts & Wives) - which has some fabulously 'historically accurate' narrative within (POB readers will know whereof I speak! ;-} - and Distressed Men-of-War - another song referred to within the POB Canon.
Heartily recommended.

A Great Funk-Rock Effort from the Veteran Rappers.......2007-06-05
Don't let the obtuse title throw you off (an inverted reference to the O'Jays' "Message in our Music"). This is a great Public Enemy album. From the opening scratched-wails of "Whole Lotta Love Goin On..." to the roaring thrash guitar of "Hitler Day", this album packs a mega-dose wallop of hip-hop fury. This time around, Chuck D and the Bomb Squad crew bring more live instruments into the mix: Guitars, bass, drums & keyboards. It's almost an alternative-rock record, but that's no reason to think it's less potent. Lyrically, Chuck takes everyone to task on this record, challenging both the establishment of the United States of America, and the hip-hop audience themselves. "Give It Up" is a bluesy up-tempo jam and the first single. "Bedlam 14:14" finds Chuck remarking that he's "good enough to know no `Indo', I threw it out the window, along with the Super Nintendo", avoiding peer-pressure trends of drugs and video-games. "What'cha Gone Do?" is an early indictment of the growing `thug-life' culture in urban America and an thinly-veiled critique of gangster rap as well. The blistering "Live & Undrugged" finds Chuck nearly losing his breath on an extended rant, declaring himself the "rhymer in a zone". On "Hitler Day" Chuck blasts what he feels is a whitewashed nostalgia associated with mainstream holidays. "Godd Complexx" is a Flavor Flav cover of a piece by 70's-era spoken-word act the Last Poets. This album was somewhat passed over in the midst of the mid-90's zenith of Death Row and Bad Boy records, not to mention the debuts of people like Nas and Coolio. Def Jam also abruptly changed distributors, which probably also put a dent in promotion. A handful of mixed reviews at the time suggested that the band had lost a step, but compared to other rap works of the period, Muse Sick may end up being the least dated.

Fantastic.......2005-10-29
This is your chance, make it worth your life........2005-08-17
The album initially caught my interest when I heard the "Kashmir"-esque epic "Whispering Actually", with its throbbing synthesized strings creating an ominous mood I rarely heard in emo. It's not quite the towering masterpiece it masquerades as, but it is the most exciting work by an emo musician that I have ever heard. This is because it stands tall and seems to valiantly abandon the melodramatized mundane for the straightforward myth, also much like Led Zeppelin. I couldn't expect the whole album to be like this - it would be positively confusing if it were - but I also had faith that Ace's cool ideas would, even if less frequently displayed, be up to par. Instead he thought he could riddle the album with aspects of the great concept albums, which wear so thin they are usually transparent. But how can I pretend not to appreciate the effort? I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody's Business is above-average emo in a totally different way than Brand New's Deja Entendu (which I believe is still the genre-topper); Deja was comfortable being emo and did all that could be done with the genre on one album, while I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody's Business is a collection of restless and sloppy stabs at the walls of the style.
Perhaps I should step out of the realm of generalization to illustrate what I actually mean. Recordings of what sound like radio clips and television shows are literally ubiquitous; virtually every song uses it at the beginning and end, perhaps to give the impression of one long studio session with a TV left on in the back the whole time. I can only feel the intended effect of this technique when I listen to Pink Floyd, the original employers. Enders' reverence is in the right place, but as insensitive as it sounds, the technique bored me on this album.
Another vibe I get from this album is that of a very long wind-down. Since "Whispering Actually" is the conceptual peak of the album, the sappiness of tracks 3 onward suggests the album will close soon. There's an interesting reason for this. The great album writers of the past several decades have always recognized a curve of energy and creativity that rises and falls during the course of the album, and have arranged accordingly. (I can just see the iPod puppets reading this with slacked jaws). I guarantee that Beatles enthusiasts wouldn't have loved "A Day in the Life" quite so much if it hadn't been the concluder for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Many otherwise consistent artists have used the concluding track to be their most honest, profound, lo fi, lethargic, or "emo". It's too bad that the commercialism of the genre has cheapened the effect of real heartfelt honesty, but there you have it. I'm a child of cynicism. I rolled my eyes before I could help myself when Track 7 came on with "It gives me/hope for the best in everyone/ in understanding what we've done..." I could have forgiven the cheese if it was the last track, but it's not even halfway through the album. Even if the attention curve was well constructed, the album would drag at an overlong 15 tracks and 50-odd minutes.
There are many things that can be relied on that will comfort some and exhaust others. The acoustic guitar is everywhere, which at least lends the music more sophistication than simple power-chord progressions, though since I find this music best when energetic or epic, the steady plucking at the beginning of so many songs eventually felt like a telltale omen that I wouldn't be too impressed. Ace's voice is another universal constant, and that's not a good thing. At its worst it feels like the musical equivalent of spreading cream cheese on bacon - that is, it's so emotional that even if you could enjoy some aspects there is so little subtlety that it's just overwhelming. At its best, it's deliberately cracked but able to carry a tune, like most indie singers.
If there's one great thing about this album, it is that the ear-catching and mind-catching techniques are often hand in hand. Enders makes sure that at least one part (chorus, verse, harmony) in each song has these characteristics of simple originality and catchiness. For example? "The Best Happiness Money Can Buy" is a campfire singalong with a good rhythm and a smattering of vocal layers featuring several Aces singing somewhat casually. Don't take this as the insult it could be designed for, but the track is good because it's so short. There's little room for much more than a catchy chorus. So no, I'm not suggesting Ace couldn't write a perfect song, with ideally balanced parts, he just couldn't write fifteen of them. He had a pretty good idea what he wanted with this album, and that certainly wasn't for it to have "filler" and a few hits. So he distributes his songwriting talent, and anyone with the drive to buy the Early November lead man's solo album will certainly have the attention span to appreciate it for what it is - a consistent effort and vision with inconsistent compatibility.

Screw the genre stuff, this is just good music. .......2005-06-15

Bummed that "Dah-Veed" never found the fame and fortune he deserved!.......2007-05-25
As someone above already mentioned, this collection touches on only a few of his lesser known albums. I noted there is only one selection from EYES WIDE OPEN (my personal favorite) and even that song sounds like an acoustic re-recording ("Overwhelmed").
But, a major bonus here is the tracks from his first recordings (formerly available only on cassette, which you would only have found at his live shows). These songs: ("Joan of Arc," "My sister," "Butterflies") are among my favorites of his. I lost interest with David when he shed his original sound and began this journey into more esoteric territory (around the time of the DISCOBALL release) - but this collection has many of his best tracks. Check it out!
Compilation of the most underrated but most talented artist.......2007-01-05
This is what I would grab if my house was on fire........2006-07-20
I first saw David in a Best Buy commercial, and loved the little 30 second snippet of his song "Kinder" so much that I recorded the commercial the next time it came on TV. In it, he said, "My name is David Garza. You don't know me yet, but you will." And YOU SHOULD! Later on I purchased the soundtrack to one of my favorite movies (Alfonso Cuaron's Great Expectations) and found him there with "Slave," one of the most gorgeous songs I had ever heard. It was a struggle to find his albums--I had to special order most of them--so when this came out, I couldn't have been any happier.
First of all the packaging itself is gorgeous: David's own artwork and all of the lyrics. And the music! Inexplicible. It's so perfect, it's beyond words. It'll make you cry, smile, dance, remember, and sing along. I cannot praise this man enough for his songwriting skills, his magnificent guitar playing, and his beautiful voice. I can't think of even one other musician who could put out a box set with this many songs on it and end up with nothing but amazing tracks. You'd be hard-pressed to pick even one song on here that is lacking.
I guess if I had to compare him to someone, I'd quote my friend who said he sounds like Jeff Buckley, Conor Oberst and Elliott Smith all rolled into one. But he's so original that it's basically impossible to compare him to anyone accurately. He is blazing his own trail and I thank him from the bottom of my heart for making the most beautiful, extraordinary music in the world.

CD#1= 56:46
CD#2= 61:05
CD#3= 61:09
CD#4= 67:15
CD#5= DVD
So much can be said about this inexpensive 4-cd box set with DVD (including all the lyrics AND his personal artwork!). The MASS of collected music assembled here defies easy catagorization. David Garza makes music from all genres and is quite good at it throughout this massive offering.
This set is the essence of pure artistic genius, so complete in itself that one could argue that it's all the David Garza you could possibly need, or want for that matter. If A STRANGE MESS OF FLOWERS could have a downside I suppose that would be it.
The truth of it is...I am hard pressed to find anything to complain about. Sure, there are some tracks I prefer over others, what's new about that? There still is a BOUNTY of top-notch material here (98% worth).
What's his music like? First I would suggest reading over the 6 prior reviews for a "feeeeeeel" of what others say his 'sound' is.
If you like singer/songwriter alternative acoustic folk music, sometimes infused with brian eno'esque sound collages and minimal support musicians, backed by lyrics both personal and mystical and often twisted with strange cosmic wordplay, David is worth a grand listen.
As mentioned by others, David Garza has a full range falsetto, though I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that his vocal phrasing can be (is!) a spot-on Marc Bolan, so exact in all the nuances it's uncanny. More than a few tracks could be misconstrued as bonified T-REX or TYRANOSAURUS REX. Just listen to the tracks 'Your Sister's Leopard Coat' or 'Valerian Aquarian' for examples. Even those song titles hint of Bolan's fantastic imagery (and I think it was Garza's intention too).
You'll have to make your own associations regarding his 'sound'. The output here is so diverse yet coherent that I hear elements of Bob Dylan,T-Rex,Brian Eno,Pink Floyd,...to name a few. There is no Tejano(sic) music here whatsoever. Do not confuse him with the other artist of the same name. The music presented here is something ELSE altogether. I have'nt even gotten around to the DVD yet!
There's Nothing 'Strange' About David's Latest.......2005-03-30
