Though easily as popular as Bing Crosby, Gene Autry was not as versatile and perhaps not as talented as his fellow multimedia star. But to his credit, Autry was better able to capture the imagination of a young, ever-expanding American consciousness with songs that helped create the myth of a West where "you sleep out every night and the only law is right." The songs on this collection span from 1929 (with a wonderful yodeling blues called "Blue Yodel No. 5") to his signature tunes "Back in the Saddle Again" and "You Are My Sunshine," recorded in the early 1940s. What's remarkable about this collection (arranged roughly in chronological order) is how closely many of the early songs are tied to African-American blues. As the collection progresses into the mid-30s, the elements we've come to recognize as "Western" begin to emerge in the music. Through it all, Autry's performances are sturdy and plainspoken, unfolding with an unexpected ease and grace. Generally excellent sound makes this CD a perfect starting place for those interested in one of America's most important early pop icons. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Must have CD for Country Western fans........2006-02-14

This is one of my favorite country western CDs. Ol' Gene gave us his best in numbers ranging from Mexicali Rose to Blue Hawaii to Blueberry Hill.

I just can't get enough of the simple somewhat melancholic style. Also these are transfers from analog recordings and the slight degradation in sound quality adds to the "long ago" feeling.

The simple, yet memorable arrangements will melt a heart of stone. I remember listening to some of these numbers on the Voice Of America program. The VOA programs used to open with some songs as a prelude to interviews and the like.

What a treat. Makes one pine for the wide open spaces.

THIS IS GREAT, AS WERE THE OTHERS YOU HAVE ON AMAZON.COM

5 out of 5 stars 25 of Gene's best ranging all different styles he's covered.......2002-01-25

Gene recorded much of his best in between the 1930's and 1940's and this compilation of 25 Gene Autry classics on ASV runs the gamut of musical styles he has covered ranging from western (Back In The Saddle Again, Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Dust, South of The Border, etc.), pop (Blue Hawaii, Mexicali Rose, Blueberry Hill, etc.), blues (Any Old Time, his cover of Jimmie Rodgers's Blue Yodel #5, etc.), country (You Are My Sunshine, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You, etc.) and other styles and were recorded from 1929-1945. While Bing Crosby covered Gene's "Goodbye Little Darlin' Goodbye" ..., the sound quality for the most part is generally excellent while some songs such as "Mexicali Rose" and "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" do sound rough compared to CD's using Sony's original sources but it does sound acceptable for the 78 plus the surface noise adds authenticity and nostalgia for the people who grew up in the era these songs were recorded. This is the perfect introduction to the talent of Gene Autry, plus ASV has a companion disc to this collection called "The Last Roundup" if you want more to add to this collection with no overlap. Absolutely essential to any collection of country, western, and early pop music and after all you can't go wrong with ASV's product after all.

5 out of 5 stars MELLOW VOICE OF AMERICA'S FAVORITE SINGING COWBOY.......2000-03-16

THIS CD HAS 4 BLUES SONGS SUNG BY GENE AUTRY. THE REST ARE MOSTLY EASY LISTENING. THESE SONGS EXCEPT FOR "BACK IN THE SADDLE" HAVE A VERY MELLOW SOUND AND ARE VERY SPIRIT LIFTING. ONLY GENE AUTRY COULD DO SUCH A FANTASTIC JOB. LOVE THE VARIETY AND THAT MELLOW VOICE!

More vividly than anyone else, Gene Autry captured the romantic paradox of the Old West: a wide-open independence and excitement laced with periods of deep loneliness and depression. "Back in the Saddle Again," "Deep in the Heart of Texas," and "Jingle, Jangle, Jingle" are jubilant celebrations of life on the trail. "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds" and "Take Me Back to My Boots and Saddle" are plaintive reflections about the lure of the frontier. "Mexicali Rose" and "The Call of the Canyon" long for the women he's left behind. "The Last Round-Up" offers the somber words of a cowboy on his deathbed. This wonderful 18-song collection trots from Autry's early Jimmie Rodgers-inspired yodels to his warm-voiced pop ballads, and serves as a definitive single-CD overview of the ultimate "Singing Cowboy." --Marc Greilsamer

Great music for chair exercises especially for seniors. This music has a gentle beat and is recognizable to most seniors.

5 out of 5 stars America's Favorite.......2002-06-22

As America's Favorite Singing Cowboy, Gene Autry was without a doubt one of the most versatil entertainers in the history of radio, movies and tv. This CD is a prime example of just how varied his music style could be. The majority of the songs on this album were eventually sung by him in the hit "B" western movies that he was so well know for. If you happen to chance across a Autry western and fall in love with the melodious voice and the wonderful personality that was Gene Autry, then this is an excellent CD to start out with. Many people are surprise to learn that Gene Autry recorded the ever popular "Blueberry Hill". For a romantic at heart the songs "Amapola", "Maria Elena","Mexicali Rose" and of course one of my favorites "Call Of The Canyon" are recommended, but if you also like the songs that take you back to a less hectic time in life when the Cowboy with the white hat was "Always" the Hero, then check out the ever popular "Back In The Saddle" and "I've got Spurs That Jingle, Jangle, Jingle". As a Gene Autry Fan and Collector, take it from me, if you are a fan old or new, this is a must have for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive collection.......2000-02-12

Having sampled most of the Gene Autry releases over the years, I have found this to be the definitive disc for either first-time buyers or die-hard aficionados of cowboy music by this American treasure. While this disc contains a few "pop" pieces such as Blueberry Hill (I had always thought that Fats Domino was the first to record it), even these are performed with a western flair. In contrast, many of the other Gene Autry collections include a number of tracks apparently intended to showcase the breadth of his style rather than focusing on the heart of his repertoire--cowboy songs. If this is your first Gene Autry disc, you'll probably want more. I suggest volume 3 of Songs of the West (also available from amazon.com), which is a nice mix of songs by Gene and early recordings by Roy Rogers with the Sons of the Pioneers.

5 out of 5 stars A Must of Country Music Lovers!.......1999-07-30

All the 18 works selected are the classics of Mr. Autry. The melody of the first song,"the Yellow Rose of Texas" is quite different form the popular version we heard today. However, the interpretation of Gene is so emotional and with strong personal style.None can claim as a fan of Gene Autry without listening to "Back in the Saddle Again"-the milestone of Gene's Career, and also one of the most important country songs in the States. Besides these 2 Classics, the most impressive works, in my opinion, are "Blueberry Hill", a superb version even Fats Domino's No.1 Hit cover version in 1956 can't be compared with, "Call of the Canyon",the beautiful & emotional melody always give me me a fresh feeling even it's an oldie in nearly 60 years ago,"You are my Sunshine" ,"It Make No Difference Now","Jingle,Jangle,Jingle" and "Red River Velley" . You will find that the music & singing style of the Singing Cowboy varies from the 30's to 40's with creation & improvement so you will find no monotony in this disc. The only regret is that "Have I Told You Lately that I Love You",the most influential love song of Gene,I think, haven't been selected in this disc. In conclution, this CD is a must of the fans of Gene Autry, and also of country music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars The best Autry collection out there.......2006-03-10

If you're only going to buy one Gene CD, it should be this, especially now that the compilation that pulls songs right off of his film soundtracks is no longer in print. My only reservation is that this collection doesn't include "The Last Round-Up" or "Bury Me on the Lone Prairie" -- also I would have replaced this original "Silver-Haired Daddy" with a more soulful one, but then again the one here was the one that won Gene the first Gold Record ever (not HIS first, but THE first), so it's hard not to include it. Quibbles aside, there's so much else on here that it's hard to complain -- including two very early and eerily good Jimmie Rodgers covers, with haunting guitar work, that make one wonder what Gene might have produced in his long life if Hollywood hadn't gotten hold of him. Hi ho, Champ!

5 out of 5 stars The Singing Cowboy - Gene Autry.......2006-02-21

I recently purchased the Essential Gene Autry 40 Historic Tracks from Amazon.com, via the internet, and have been totally thrilled, with many of the tunes featured on the two Cd collection, that I have never heard before.
These Cd's is a must for ALL Gene Autry fans world-wide, as not only does it give a full account of his Entire Columbia Records Career but it features some of those unique historic tracks taken from the old 78rpm recordings made in his younger years.
You can reminise with Gene as he portrays "The Life Of Jimmie Rodgers", "Dallas County Jail", "Dear Old Western Skies", the very popular "Amapola", to the sentimental all time favourite of many, "That Silver-Haired Daddy Of Mine, to "When It's Sprintime In The Rockies" just to mention a few gems from the 20 tunes on Cd One.
Then theres even more Nostalgia with Gene on Cd two, with the likes of Oklahoma Hills, the bouncy "Sioux City Sue", "Roly Poly, plus not to forget "God Bless America" sung in true Cowboy fashion as only Gene Autry can master, and if you're still looking for more golden tunes, then listen to "On Top Of Old Smokey" another that I played oh so often from a 78rpm, then you must check out the song made popular in later years by Dinah Shore, "Buttons And Bows" this is another treat from Gene, presented in true Cowboy singing style.
To close off the second Cd of 20 memorable tunes, are two famous all-time Christmas greats, "Here Comes Santa Claus" and Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", just to add even more lust and sentimental value to the Two Cd Album of Essentially Gene Autry.
Finally, I take my hat off to "Columbia Records" for this long awaited treasured release in respect of "The Singing Cowboy - Gene Autry, as I can say, Gene himself would be over the moon and possible, (singing on the moon), if he were to be able to listen to his famous collection of tunes today.
I most certainly recommend this collection for ALL fans of Gene Autry to have in your home library.
Robbie Ferguson, Christchurch, New Zealand.

5 out of 5 stars "40 Historic Songs from America's Favorite Singing Cowboy".......2005-08-04

The Gene Autry recordings keep surfacing and gathering plenty of steam with this latest release "THE ESSENTIAL GENE AUTRY"...the sound quality is excellent and nostalgic for the wranglers who grew up listening to "America's Favorite Singing Cowboy"...for the first time ever a 2-CD-Set covering his entire Columbia Records career, absolutely essential for all cowboys and gals...Gene's good guy image with catchy lyrics and beautiful melodies are pleasant and extremely calming...after listening these songs over and over, you are transported back in time when life was simpler and the good guys always won. Gene was the screen's first "Singing Cowboy", already well known in the late '20s as a radio and recording star. Autry began making films in 1934 and kept cranking them out except for a short visit with Uncle Sam in the United States Army Air during World War 2.

Ride down the trail to Melody Ranch and meet the only entertainer with five stars on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame". One each for radio, recordings, films, television and live appearances. The Autry Museum of Western Heritage is a world-class center devoted to preserving and interpreting the rich history and traditions of the American West...Gene maintained his own coterie of fine songwriters to keep him supplied with original tunes...his wondrously effective singing voice was warm, reassuring and nostalgic...somes marvelous recordings from Gene's early days in films...40 historic songs from his rise to superstardom in "horse-operas".

"TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS" and "BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN" were big Autry recordings and became movie titles...and "GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY" became a classic for him and other recording artists...other highlights ~ SOUTH OF THE BORDER(DOWN MEXICO WAY), MEXICALI ROSE, THAT SILVER-HAIRED DADDY OF MINE, WHEN IT'S SPRINGTIME IN THE ROCKIES, BE HONEST WITH ME, DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS, TAKE ME BACK TO MY BOOTS AND SADDLE, YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE, JINGLE JANGLE JINGLE, DON'T FENCE ME IN, HAVE I TOLD YOU LATELY THAT I LOVE YOU, GOODNIGHT IRENE, SIOUX CITY SUE, HOME ON THE RANGE, ON TOP OF OLD SMOKEY, BUTTONS AND BOWS, OLD CHISHOLM TRAIL, PETER COTTON TAIL..plus many, many more gave us such pleasure when we saw Gene on that big screen.

During my childhood I grew up listening to Gene Autry's Christmas music...there isn't a more special way to celebrate Christmas than hearing "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" performed by Gene...now that I have my grandchildren, I want them to have the same wonderful memories that I experienced...this was good old fashioned Christmas spirit that the entire family loved and enjoyed...Gene Autry who was responsible for keeping one of the world's greatest Christmas traditions alive the "Hollywood Christmas Parade", when bad times surfaced and needed some assistance financially...it was Gene who came to the rescue as Johnny Grant (Honary Mayor of Hollywood) did whatever it took to keep the parade the class-A Holiday event from going under...drawing approximatley one million spectators along the parade route each year, Hollywood's biggest single-day event and the kick off for the Holiday Season...this was all from Gene's generous support and giving spirit.

By 1969 Gene's version of "RUDOLPH" had sold 6,500,000 copies and was the all-time top selling single for Columbia Records (the 1957 version, recorded for Gene's Challenge label, is included here)..."RUDOLPH" ranks as the second favorite Christmas song right behind Irving Berlin's "White Christmas".

But let's go back to the 1946, on a Thanksgiving weekend and a Gene rode tall in the saddle, and Santa Claus was right around the bend, heard the children excited chants of "HERE COMES SANTA CLAUS"...and a song was born from Gene and co-written by Oakley Haldeman...recorded on August 28th, 1947 and became an instant hit. Then in 1949 songwriter Johnny Marks composed a tune from a poem - "RUDOLPH, THE RED-NOSED REINDEER" many artist turned down the chance to record this classic, but Ina Autry, Gene's first wife loved the song and felt the children would love it too...she was right...and the rest my friends, is history...this Autry Collection is Essential for all fans of Country Music and Western Films...don't miss this one, you'll never regret it!

5 out of 5 stars The Best in the West!.......1999-12-16

I have been a RITS fan for years and heartily recommend them to everyone. They are not "just" a cowboy band, but excellent musicians and overall entertainers (even better in person than on CD). The tunes on this CD show a wide range of flavors from jazzy ("Sands of Texas") to the always great cowboy tunes ("Riding Down the Canyon", one of my favorites). Give them a listen, you will not be sorry. Check out their website!

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!.......1999-05-04

Better than ever Gene Autry favorites updated and beautifully done by the melodic, sing along, Riders in the Sky. Gene would be thrilled, in fact he was when the Riders performed these songs for him after recording the album. He just smiled and sang along to all the tunes (liner notes). Back in the Saddle Again, and Souix City Sue are real standouts. I just wish the Riders would do Volume 2 of Gene Autry.

This album was an all time favorite when I was growing up. My sisters and brothers all adored it. The CD version is identical to what the album was. I think there are a couple more songs on it, but they are every bit as good as the rest of the album. Anyone buying this album for a little reminiscing will love it!

    2 out of 5 stars I don't even know where to begin..........2006-10-21

As a Gene Autry fan, particularly of his Christmas recordings, I was really looking forward to this release. But...what a disappointment! I will look over the dropouts - obviously the source tapes have deteriorated - but what happened to the final three cuts? They are so laden with noise reduction artifacts that they are barely listenable. And, I know the disc is short, but were the 2 second pauses between tracks REALLY necessary? Talk about choppy. No flow at all.

This CD did make me do one thing...go back into my archives and pull out my original Grand Prix vinyl. I think I'll be doing a transfer and retire this CD to the bottom shelf.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive collection, part 2.......2000-03-03

After buying "The Essential Gene Autry" from amazon.com, I wrote a review describing that disc as the definitive collection of western songs by this icon of the Singing Cowboy era. I since have added "20 Golden Cowboy Hits" to my collection and, if anything, like it even more. The differences are slight, with a large overlap betwen the two CDs. The "20 Hits" collection has as its main benefit the inclusion of "Buttons and Bows", which is such a great song and which Gene sang better than anyone else. I also like the version of "Jingle Jangle Jingle" on this CD better. On the other hand, the "Essential" collection includes the wonderful "El Rancho Grande" and has a better version of "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Another notable difference is that the "Essential" disc has "Blueberry Hill" as a quasi-western inclusion, while "20 Hits" has "At Mail Call Today" (of World War II) and "Peter Cottontail" (of, well, the Easter Bunny). Both are nice, but by what stretch of the imagination are they considered "golden cowboy hits?" I would say to study the track selection and take your pick, but I have decided to keep both. I bought a slimline "two-fer" jewel box for a buck at a local record store; there's room for both booklets and both discs, and I can play whichever I want, depending on which I'm more in the mood for. I could actually listen to them back-to-back!

The late Gene Autry (a.k.a. the "Singing Cowboy" and the former owner of the Anaheim Angels) co-wrote the popular standard "Here Comes Santa Claus" in 1947. Over the next six years he seemed to keep reinventing it, if this 18-song collection of Autry's recorded Christmas music is any indication. There's "Santa, Santa, Santa," "He's A Chubby Little Fellow," and "I Wish My Mom Would Marry Santa Claus"--all variations on a theme (but what Christmas music isn't?). Still, for lovers of cowboy music and particularly Autry's amicable straight-forward vocal style, this is a respectable, unvarnished collection that also includes a duet with Rosemary Clooney ("The Night Before Christmas Song"), a number of tunes penned by Johnny Marks (including "Rudolph…"), and a couple of notable "Frosty the Snowman" themes. There's also a little ditty called "Sleigh Bells," co-inked by the Singing Cowboy six years after his success with "Here Comes Santa Claus," as proof that lightning does strike twice. --Martin Keller

    5 out of 5 stars nostalgia.......2007-01-12

My sister and I grew up in the era of Gene Autry. A few Christmases ago we were trying to sing "If it doesn't snow on Christmas. . . " and couldn't remember all the words. This album is so great. Full of lots of great songs for children. I bought one for myself and one for my sister. It's a great addition to my Christmas music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Back in the Sleigh-dle Again.......2005-01-06

Prolific. That was Gene Autry, it seems. His wife asked him to record "Rudolph", a promotional tune for the long-time but now-defunct Montgomery Ward department store. It went beyond a mere promo and ended up as a Christmas standard. Who knows how much money it's made. Gene could also write a tune now and then and not just "Ridin' Down the Canyon". He wrote some of these songs himself. It's worth having, believe me. And as for prolific, reviewer L. Bernabo (with the typo in his branding) couldn't tell you which song is the #3 most popular (after White Christmas and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer). Well, trust me, it's "The Christmas Song" written by the "Velvet Fog" Mel Torme and sung by Nat "King" Cole. It's been around like 50 years. You can find it easily enough. In the meantime, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Christmas Classics from the Singing Cowboy himself.......2003-12-04

Everybody knows that the biggest Christmas hit of the first half of the 20th century was Bing Crosby's "White Christmas." Now, the question is whether you know that Gene Autry's recording of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" comes in second on that list (no idea what is third, sorry). The story is that Autry only recorded the song because his wife told him to. The singing cowboy had already had a major holiday hit with "Here Comes Santa Claus" and would have another with "Frosty the Snowman." Autry had a rather large catalogue of Christmas songs, as this collection amply proves. These songs were recorded in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and include some songs that I absolutely guarantee you have never heard before, such as the Autry originals "He's a Chubby Little Fellow" and "I Wish My Mom Would Marry Santa Claus." There is also a duet with Rosemary Clooney of "The Night Before Christmas (In Texas, That Is)"; the song comes in two parts because of the limitation on how much music you could get on one side of a single way back when (a time closer to Edison's wax discs than the CD).

This 2003 release adds a couple of tracks to the CBS "Christmas Favorites" album from a while back, and remasters the entire bunch. That does not exactly make these songs sound like they were recorded last week, but they do sound better and there is something totally appropriate about the old fashioned sound of these recordings that you do not really want them tampering with anyway. It is interesting to note that the most "traditional" song Autry does is the last track, "Up on the Rooftop"; most of these songs are about Santa Claus. You would think there would be something less secular, especially given we are talking about a major country western star, but that is not the case. Apparently that was the way things were a half-century ago. Just remember, this collection is nostalgia and not kitsch, even if these songs were recorded before you were born.

    5 out of 5 stars Christmas Classics.......2003-11-01

What a wonderful CD. All of these songs are classics. And the master of Christmas melodies performs them with his usual mellow voice. Christmas is not Christmas with out Rudolph. And the song "Where Did My Snowman Go?"....what a treasure. Rosemary Clooney and Gene's voices really blend well together on "The Night Before Christmas Song". This version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" is wonderful. This CD is a must for anyone who loves Christmas music. Mr. Autry is in top form on all of these selections.
