5 out of 5 stars An American Perspective of Outlandish's Music.......2007-01-23

Where to start?...I guess like this: What kind of music so eclectic and unique would have listeners and fans spanning continents from South America, to Europe, to middle East, to Central Asia and beyond uniting different tounges and cultures?-- Outlandish from Denmark of course!
I first saw these guys on LinkTV's world music. Their songs are mostly in English and Spanish but have a fair amount of Danish, Morroccan, and Pakistani.
Their music is just as diverse. They're mostly of the Hip Hop genre, but is originally European, and not American Hip Hop wannabe at all! However, they insert influences of Argentinian, Arabic, and Eastern European music -- truly a product of the Music Earthchild!
Personality? They are quite vocal in their lyrics, not just entertaining, but soothing to the soul no matter what religion or faith you are. If you're sick of curses and booty-calls in regular Hip Hop music, this is a good alternative. Two of their members are muslim, Isam and Waqas, and no doubt they incorporate their faith in it, but they are harmonious with their Catholic member, Lenny, producing an awakening and uniting message (esp. during these troubled times).
Isam and Waqas were born and raised in Denmark with Morroccan and Pakistani descent, respectively. Lenny emigrated from Honduras.
They have received the SoPot Award 2006 from Poland, and were nominated and won as best Danish music for 2006 MTV Europe Awards.

5 out of 5 stars Love Outlandish.......2007-01-12

I love Outlandish and I love this album. The convergence of Moroccan,Amazigh, Indo-Pakistani, and Latin music influences are simply amazing. Unlike most R&B/Hip-hop/Rap artists out there, these guys have great, responsible, purpose-driven lyrics and they are proud of it. They are extremely talented and I'm surprised they are not well know in the States. Hope that changes soon.

3 out of 5 stars 2 songs so far.......2006-09-18

I heard Callin' U and Closer to vein with Sami Yousef and they are really good and I recommend them to people who wants to hear nice music, modern and without swearing and bad words and music to the soul and mind. It's geart I like them, i'll look for the other songs and listen to see other work from this band

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Recorded at the beginning of her career in 1976, this shows Frederica Von Stade as a bright, accomplished singer with a distinctive sound, a bit softer, smaller, and fresher than her voice is now. With a selection of arias including all the best mezzo-soprano moments from Berlioz's Beatrice et Benedict, Massenet's Werther and Cendrillon, Berlioz's Damnation of Faust, and what became her great party piece, the drunk aria from Offenbach's La Perichole, everything is utterly lovely. However, this is her first try at most of this music and it shows: performances are all about voice and not about words or characterization. For those who love the voice alone. --David Patrick Stearns

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A delight.......2000-05-25

These French opera arias, sung by Frederica von Stade, my favorite mezzo-soprano, were recorded early in her career, and they are a delight. They may not all show quite the expressiveness she developed later, but still there's that lovely mezzo voice, unlike any other and always a pleasure to hear.

5 out of 5 stars The Supreme von Stade's Art.......1999-04-02

This CD shows the art of a great mezzo in a repertoire that she is better than many french opera singers!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful performance.......1999-01-09

I really do not know why this CD was not released before. Here is Frederica Von Stade in peak form, singing near deffinitive versions of great French arias. Her voice is ideally fitted for the material. She has agility, range and a beautiful middle register, apart from great French diction. Highlights of the CD are "Enfin, je suis ici" from Massenet's Cendrillon, "Connais-tu le pays?" from Thomas' Mignon and the two Offenbach arias.

4 out of 5 stars Frederica is my favorite singer, and this is my favorite........1998-11-16

Rich sensuous heartfealt songs by my favorite alto for many years, now on CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you're gone, I can still hear your voice.......2006-12-28

As an EP, it wouldn't be far off to think that Charlotte's essence is definitely present but her uncanny ability to make ANY song enjoyable wouldn't be as readily available. Not true! Veins, much like In Parentheses, captures everything Charlotte brings to the table, be it her enchanting piano ballads, or her dark rockers, this is Charlotte Martin doing what she does best.

As strange as it sounds this EP is probably my favorite release from Charlotte. Under The Gravel Skies and Veins serves as two of my favorite songs she's ever made so that helps out but it's more that this CD seems to revolve entirely around the piano and her. Of course you have a lot of other instruments making appearances, I mean it wouldn't be a Charlotte Martin CD without them, but they are secondary here. Her vocals are so perfect here (which isn't anything new), the lyrics are so wonderful, and her piano playing only gives the songs that much more depth. I'm at a loss for words when I here this CD. From the simplicity of songs like Bones, Cars On Crescent, and Days Of The Week to more adventurous tracks like Veins, Under The Gravel Skies, Four Walls, and Root, there is no low point. Heck, even the bonus track, the live version of On Your Shore, makes for great listening.

My favorite songs are Veins, Under The Gravel Skies, Four Walls, Cars On Crescent. I need not tell Charlotte fans to get this because I'm sure they already do, as for those of you who are thinking about checking into her music just do it. Start anywhere in her catalog. Everything is welcoming, nothing alienates certain people, this is music for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Enchanting.......2006-03-07

With her emotionally charged performances, her beautiful voice, enchanting songwriting, and masterful piano playing, Charlotte Martin has forged quite the reputation for herself. I first caught on to her with "On Your Shore" which I bought on a whim not really knowing anything about her and only having heard some song clips through the record stores listening station. I instantly fell in love with her. Everything about her is beautiful. Her degree in opera has helped her to carve out quite a niche. Her songs are a rich blend of opera, pop, dance, alternative, and a touch of goth. Her one girl army performances are divine. You can really feel the emotion in her songs as they come alive on stage. If you like to try something refreshingly different than your typical bubble gum, cookie cutter music, then give Charlotte a good listen. I think you'll enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Deeply lyrical and Deeply Rhythmic.......2006-01-17

Charlotte Martin - Veins
January 14th, 2006
Four and a Half/Five Stars

If Sarah McLachlan and Sam Beam (AKA Iron and Wine) could give birth through music, Charlotte Martin would be the result. "Veins" is a stunning work of art as piano runs through each song effortlessly and Martin's innocent voice goes through sorrow and joy just as naturally as curve balls are thrown into the rhythms left and right.

Martin has her own stamp on this album as well as its sound-a-likes: bringing in Celtic beats on such songs as "Veins" and "Under the Gravel Skies" as well as bringing in a slight "Annie" sounding dance beat on "Four Walls." The rest of the songs heavily showcase Martin's piano skills.

Many of her lyrics are jaw-dropping, as through her child-like voice she sings "...We might be out of soap or real communication/and all the tricks my little brain plays on my nerves" in the "Top 40 potential" ballad "Days of the Week."

Another jaw-dropping experience is when Martin opens her mouth at the beginning of "Veins"`s stand-out song "Root": "Bring me back to the time again when the fire is wild and the summer's red/and you walk through weeds just to make a garden."

In the tradition of her artistic blend of words and piano melodies, "Bones," "Cars on Concrete" [instrumental track], and the Bonus track of a live version of "At Your Shore" shines in another light as Martin's story-telling of great feminine strength.

"Veins" is what should be in the Top-40 right now as lyrics seem to be top priority on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Veins Is Different But Great.......2006-01-12

I am familiar with Charlotte Martin's other music - On Your Shore, Mystery, Magic & Seeds, In Parenthesis, Test-Drive Girl, One Girl Army. I thought Veins had a very different sound from those, while still retaining some familiar elements. A friend of mine bought a copy of it for me at a show of hers. It has 8 Tracks: Veins, Bones, Under the Gravel Skies, Four Walls, Cars on Crescent, Days of the Week, and On Your Shore (Live Bonus Track).

Veins, the song, has a lot of emphasis on the percussion, which is definitely different, yet there is still piano and other instrumentation. It's a somewhat lively song, and I like it. I'm told the "hallelujah" part in the song is much more elaborated on in live performances, which I can definitely see.

Bones has a Bjork, glockespiel sound to it, which gives it a very fairytale, lullabye quality. It a very beautiful song.

Under the Gravel Skies really through me on the first listen. It's more non-melodic than anything I've heard by Charlotte Martin, but successive listens have really turned me onto this track. There's something about it that reminds of an a 80's alternative band quality in the music - in a good way, maybe it's the electric guitar used and the drum machine beat. It's definitely not a formulaic sounding piece, and I think that's what wins me over about it.

Four Walls is a real highlight track on the CD. It's got a driving beat to it, and the chorus is just really energizing. There are a lot more electronic sounds on the instrumentation as well. The lyrics bespeak of confidence in one's self. It's definitely my favorite on the CD.

Cars On Crescent is an instrumental piece, combining piano with orchestration and electronic sounds and sounds of ocean waves. It's a strikingly haunting and beautiful piece. I like it much better than "The Flood", an instrumental from "The Darkest Hour" EP.

Days of the Week is a more "traditional" Charlotte Martin piece, with piano instrumentation, and later guitar added. I think any fan of Charlotte's work would enjoy this piece and its poingant lyrics.

Root is another mostly piano piece, a little more lively than Days of the Week. I especially like the backing vocals that get added on as the song progresses. I like how more "layers" are added to the instrumentation as the song progresses.

The final track is a live performance of the title song of her On Your Shore album. I loved that the recording stayed a little longer after the song was over, to hear Charlotte's gratitude for the audience's reaction to the song, and asking them not to make her cry.

So - Great CD. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars The Introduction To What Sounds Like A Promising Full Album:.......2005-11-17

Veins is the introduction to female pianist Charlotte Martin's upcoming full album called Stromata and I must say it sounds like her other full album On Your Shore may have some healthy competition.
I always highly recommend Charlotte Martin ever since coming across On Your Shore which is an amazing album as well. I think, from what I hear on Veins, she's getting even better and cannot wait to hear the mysterious full album coming soon.

Here is a short review of Veins and what it offers-

1)Veins- A- Very good song. The way Charlotte's sings and the music itself in the background just make it an electrifying song. A great introduction to the c.d.

2)Bones- A- The direction changes into a slow, but overall gorgeous song here called Bones. This is one of Charlotte's best songs she ever made in my opinion.

3)Under Gravel Skies- A- What a scary feel this song has to it. This songs has a slow pace with some great background music. Charlotte sings it very powerfully.

4)Four Walls- A- This song the first time you hear it may make you wonder how much you'll love it, but after a few more times it grew on me. I absolutely love the song now, especially the chorus. She sings this song well with a quicker pace.

5)Cars on the Crescent- A- A very beautiful solo piano Charlotte plays. No singing but that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable.

6)Days of the Week- A- Another song that had to grow on me but I really grew to like it. I love the lyrics. One of softer, reflective songs.

7)Root- B- The only song I do not care too much for on here. I love the piano but the song itself is ntohing amazing. I don't listen to this song as much as the rest.

8)On your Shore (live)- B+- I still prefer the studio version to her live- but it is still nice to hear her live!

Overall she gets a solid 4.5/ 5. A very moving and exciting introduction to Stormata. I cannot wait to hear what more her full album will present!

          Album Description

2007 UK pressing of the third studio album from the Danish award winning Hip Hop trio, originally issued in their home country in 2005. With this album, they move beyond their Hip Hop roots to fashion songs in world groove styles dealing with the melancholy joys of life as well as social indignation. Their sound is more versatile than ever, thanks to a self confidence built by their first two album successes and has enabled them to explore and incorporate other styles of music. RCA.
