RICK STEFFEN BIO
With 3 albums released, Rick Steffen is recognized as one of Key West's finest singer-songwriters. This versatile performer has treated audiences through the country to his unique blend of island, country and soft pop sounds and vocals.
Steffen has been singing and playing since age seven when an entertainer at his father's nightclub introduced him to music and the stage.
Before long he was performing with various bands including "The Idols" a rival band in Daytona to classmates Greg and Duane Allman's band the Allman Joys and Daytona's famous Nightcrawlers, of Little Black Egg fame.
Self taught and studied in guitar, bass and voice, he spent the late 60's and 70's playing clubs in Florida, Georgia, and New Jersey where his band Decembers Children backed headliners like Sam & Dave, and Lou Christie. He was the Bass Player and performed in S. Florida appearances of Billy Vera with the Shirelles.
After completing 2 years in the U.S. Navy, and A degree in Electronics, Steffen began touring with show band "Goode Stuff" out of Atlanta. A single 45 release in 1979 "Livin In the Middle" started his recording career. His first album release, "Love & Escape" in Nashville, was Hosted by John Prine's producer and members from Crystal Gayles group.
Returning to Daytona Poolside venues in the summer season 1985, Steve joined up with his partner Steve Mello who would move with him to seek their fortune in Key West with a 4 Octive marimba, and acoustic guitar. Key West embraced this "dynamic duo" for the next 10 years and they continued to record with Rick's 2nd album "Tropical Nights". Without the pressures of the Mainland, Steffen and Mello were able to focus on a definate style that worked for the continous stream of Parrotheads that blew through town. Their style evolved further with a melding of talents from the Survivors, a long time Key West tradition at Mangrove Mammas. "Tropical Nights", recorded at Conch Republic Studios 24 Track Analog Studios has become a favorite with Parrotheads, boaters, and visitors.
Steffen has played at the 21st Woodstock Reunion, the famed Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Cruise Ships, and the British West Indies. Also popular venues including such Key West hot spots as Sloppy Joes, Hemmingways's hallowed hangout, Schooner Wharf, Pier House, Conch Republic Seafood Co. and the Casa Marina.
He has been the warm up act for national acts like Quicksilver, Steppenwolf, and the Average White Band, He plays on Acoustic Guitar with his band, "Offshore" in Daytona and Key West, and Margaritaville in Orlando, to a broad spectrum of travelers and locals eager to soack up sun, local live music and spirits, promoting his new release "Another Island".

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." 1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.
I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...

The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.
When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.
Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

Once lost, now found and reissued on CD........2005-06-03
At one time in the 1960s Decca had the masters transferred to tape for a possible LP reissue. That reissue never happened, and in shipping the discs back to the storage facility, they were broken. The tape was taken from the company's archives and did not turn up until almost 30 years later. Though modern technology could probably have coaxed even better sound from the master discs, we must be thankful that the tape was made when it was.
In the meanwhile there were three unautherized isses of these tracks. A new York based private label called Box Office transferred the 78's to one side of an Lp in the 1970s. Later, AEI released an elaborate gatefold Lp with not only the full score (again dubbed from 78s) but also fabricated some additional tracks reprising some of the songs (in theatrical order) by editing portions from the existing tracks. Finally there was a release on CD from Box Office with horrible sound that stil sometimes turns up for sale. Avoid it. Decca actually sent a request that Box Office withdraw the bootleg Cd.
This edition has much better sound and the bonus tracks by Hildegard and Shirley Ross from BY JUPITER and HIGHER AND HIGHER make the package very worthwhile.

Worse, I have an AEI LP recording of the revival which has three additional tracks from the show. Why weren't these selections included in this recording?
On the other hand, even the 9 tracks from Connecticut Yankee are worth owning. As a previous reviewer said, just Vivienne Segal's "To Keep My Love Alive" is worth the price of admission!

musician delivers the goods: smooth tropical ambience, cyber-sultry island rhythms, and
warm sunny melodies wafting in like gentle ocean breezes. Also much like his debut,
Brannan mixes up tempos, moods, and textures, ranging from Richard Bone-like tropical
lounge-jazz (the opening track, "Congo Island") to mysterious and haunting ambient
pieces ("Sea Yourself" and its somewhat tribal reprise, "Sea Yourself Too") to
island-flavored rhythm-fests ("Until Then [jungle mix]" or the reggae-tinged "Island Hop"
and "Reggae Knights"). The album also includes a new version of the track "Caribbean
Sea" from the first Caribbean Dream release. Brannan even honors us with his first
outright vocal tune, the album closer "Thinkin' Mon." As you can infer from the track's
title, this is the most outright reggae number on the album, and what can I tell ya - I've
spoken to Brannan on the phone and I sure as hell don't recognize his voice on this song!
I'm not going to tell you he's got Bob Marley's pipes, of course. But what the hell - the
guy is having a blast on this cut (that's not hard to tell) and ya just gotta get in the swing
of it, mon!
Merely as a caveat to those of you who detest nature sounds, they are abundant on this
fine album (especially birdsong and waves, as you'd expect, along with some nocturnal
insects). Myself, I love environmental textures on CDs like this one. For me, they add just
the right amount of "being there."
I raved about the original Caribbean Dream when it came out, and I'm even more
enthusiastic about this follow-up. Brannan's recording abilities (from a technical
standpoint) have grown exponentially with each releaser. Engineering is flawless,
percussion is expertly recorded and mixed, and his control over his array of keyboards has
never sounded better. The first Caribbean Dream was a lot of fun but also a little on the
"not-quite-ripe" side. Now that Brannan Lane has matured and "aged," much like fine
wine, the musical "flavors" are more complex and more satisfying. Not that this CD isn't
still all about havin' a great time. That it is for sure. So, if you're looking for music that
brings to mind lazing on the beach, sipping on a cold beverage perhaps (heaven forbid it's
alcoholic in nature, of course), and listening to the sounds of waves and wildlife, this here
album will serve as your round-trip ticket to the Islands, mon. Now, take off those shoes
