Sounds like a cheap plastic toy.......2007-06-20

I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.

Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.

its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.

Kid's Music.......2007-06-08

I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.

Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics

These synthesizer versions of classical songs get really old, really fast. Worse yet, the songs are sometimes not soothing at all, especially the very first song. The song seems to get particularly loud and uptempo, which is precisely what you don't expect in a lullaby. Please listen to the sample of the first song at least before you buy.

Great for bedtime, but wish it were a real piano.......2007-06-01

This CD worked great to put my daughter to sleep while I rocked her in my arms, and I enjoyed the choices of songs and the arrangements. However, I would have preferred that real instruments were used.

one reviewer said the Gary never made it on RS's 2003 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. I would have been more shocked if he did make it as that rag is extremely overrated and not nearly as hip as they think they are. That rag isn't worth the paper it's printed on and the only way I'd like it is if I was 12 years old and clueless.
Anyone with 50% hearing in their ears can tell that Gary is one of the best to pick the six strings. What attracted me to Gary way back in the day was that his licks were full of fire and passion, he played like he meant it. I love his hard rock work and I very much enjoy his blues playing.
For some odd and unexplainable reason he never caught fire here in the states and that is a damn shame. In his prime he could wipe the floor with the pretty boy posers that some people seem to drool over. Get this disc along with some of his older work and bask in the light of one of the great guitarists ever.

Pretty Close.......2007-06-16

Some say Gary is overlooked and underrated. Perhaps they are right, for he didn't even make it into RS's 2003 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. But that's just fine with me. Over the last many years I have become jealous for Gary; go find your own guitar god. Just keep reading and believing your rags about great guitarists and you will miss the best.

Better than the last one.......2007-06-15

While I think the blues venture is getting a little redundant for Gary, I was pleasantly surprised. There is enough difference here from his recent albums to make this a great release. Alot better than Old New Ballads Blues. However, hopefully he'll try something new next time.

Rock & Blues Legend Delivers Again.......2007-06-08

It's a great CD. Each one since the Scars CD seems to get better and better. Gary continues to place more effort on his vocals and is nearly back to the Still Got The Blues and After Hours era when considering the smoothness, dynamics and overall tone of his voice.

The order of the songs is mid/up tempo followed by a ballad. This pattern repeats throughout the entire CD.

If The Devil Made Whisky - A mid tempo, growling tune with a slightly abrasive guitar riff. Nice slide guitar work (which is always a treat for me). It's a great lead off track.

Trouble At Home - Slow bluesy ballad with an organ backing up the melody. Very dark and moody solo.

Thirty Days - Up tempo number with an infectious groove. The solo fits the song perfectly (you'll "whoo" right along with Gary). Fun.

Hard Times - Mid tempo shuffle with harmonica coloring the song throughout. The guitar solo is played with alot of passion and energy. You can almost see Gary making the faces. Great song.

Have You Heard - Back to the ballad, and again with organ backing. The solo is more passionate in this one than Trouble At Home. Nice.

Eyesight To The Blind - A recognizable cover tune. Gary's take is fairly predictable, but engaging. The organ is present, but a bit more in the background as Gary's guitar volume donimates it. Very good solo helps make the song distinctly Gary's.

Evenin' - Another ballad. Starts out with just a percussion beat, then the rest of the band joins in. This one probably has Gary's most vunerable vocal and delicate solo. Dreamy.

Nowhere Fast - Slow tempo song that is essentially a ballad I suppose. Not as delicate as Evenin', but not as dark and moody as Trouble At Home. Here is where I'm beginning to think that this is not the "back to the rock blues" everyone had thought this CD would be. Ha!

Checkin' Up On My Baby - Harmonica driven mid tempo. The harmonica tone is devastating. Gary's extended guitar solo becomes an extention of the harmonica tone and comes on very smoothly. Harmonica comes back together with the guitar for the outro. This would be a great song to see live. Awesome.

I Had A Dream - Very slow tempo ballad with a soaring vocal for the chorus. My buddy always comments on songs like this one. He compares the depression and despair in Gary's voice during the verses to "wanting to slit his wrists". Passionate.

Sundown - A rare treat! This one is an acoustic resonator slide guitar number that is just Gary and his guitar. It is a unique and perfect way to close the CD.

The CD runs just over 51 minutes, which is nearly identical to the last CD, and 10 minutes longer than the "way too short" Power Of The Blues. If you've loved the best of Gary's previous blues work, I have no doubt that you'll love this one too.

Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. --David Stubbs

Shut Up and Put Yer Headphones On.......2007-06-04

I first heard this when it was first released on vinyl in 1967 and it was at a friend's apt. We were all musicians and we took turns listening to the opening with headphones. Today we have 5.1/7.1 surround etc; it's impossible to overstate what the creative use/mix of the stereo field did. To hear instruments sounding like voices swirling to fro left to right with Jimi's voice coming out of the top of your head was a mind altering Experience;pun intended. So let the Experience of this second effort take over and run through you through some great headphones and while defocusing use the album art as the Mandela, even with the mistakes and warts, it was intended to be. That was 40 years ago and it's as stunning a work today as it was then and it'll light your chakras up like a pinball.

The Earth Turned On His Axes.......2007-05-27

Like Terry Gilliam, Hendrix at his worst was still better than everybody else at their best. Astoundingly, Hendrix secured his place high at the top of the rock guitar pantheon on the strength of just three albums, recorded in rapid succession. Axis: Bold As Love, is the middle child, or perhaps, the redheaded stepchild. It can't touch Are You Experienced? or Electric Ladyland - but it's still pretty darn hot.

Rushed out under battle conditions, Axis shows some ragged edges. The revolting cover, stupid even by standards of the day, was the result of a mix-up. Hendrix wanted the cover art to reflect his American Indian ancestry - the record company folks in England heard Indian and, (like Columbus in reverse) thought Indian Indian. Indian religion was all the fashion then, so it seemed like a natural. All this, however, does not explain away the unadulterated ugliness.

More harrowing still is the cab ride story. In the middle of recording the album, Hendrix took the masters with him to play at a party he was attending, forgetting them in a cab. (One must wonder if his absent-mindedness was natural or enhanced.) Realizing what had happened, Chas Chandler had to remix half the album in 11 hours - astonishing considering the amount of studio wizardry featured.

The writing is off throughout, lyrics were never Jimi's strongest suit, here it shows. Even the wonderful Castles Made Of Sand has writing that would have been flagged in a high school poetry class. The kicker of the litter is You Got Me Floatin' - soaring guitar and driving beat. The one perfect song, often overlooked, is One Rainy Wish, which evokes a very particular atmosphere and then morphs into something amazing, all in the space of 3:40. Little Wing is a perennial, lovely, and one of the rare Hendrix songs often covered. If 6 Was 9, and Bold As Love, showcase Hendrix in fine form. Both are anthems of the day, and both seem to keep switching gears, every time you think they couldn't be any more thrilling, they kick up another level.

Hendrix adapted and changed at lightning speed, a lifetime of evolution compressed into a few years. Axis is a flawed album, but as the necessary bridge between two near-perfect extremes, it is fascinating and satisfying.

Kowabunga!!.......2007-05-08

When I first heard snatches of "Are You Experienced", Hendrix' first album on Philly's premier, local, underground FM rock station of the time, I couldn't believe that here was a black, American expatriate, living in England, producing what had to be ARCHE-typical California psychedelic hard rock/funk like no other person before or after him! There was a confidence in Hendrix' singing/songwriting and guitar playing that NO ONE has equaled...white, black, hispanic or otherwise, since! Though he played sideman to people like Little Richard and James Brown, he was a better musician than ten of those two put together, though their influence on him was obvious. Here was a man who took three idioms: soul/R&B, rock and psychedelia, and melded them together in a unique consumme that no one has been able to duplicate, though Cream and Arthur Lee's Love came closer than most.

"Axis" is a little more introspective than "AYE"...it's like Jimi was telling us: "Here I am, at least now...whaddya think?" You hear his feelings about relationships in songs like "Little Miss Lover", "Little Wing", "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "You Got Me Floatin'". You hear his contemplations on spirituality and sci-fi in "EXP", "Bold As Love" and "Spanish Castle Magic" and social musings in "If 6 Was 9".

His arrangements were original, forceful, cocky and catchy. There was nobody else like Jimi Hendrix...anywhere! And it's a shame we lost him so soon after he hit it big...in fact, like so many OTHER rockers from the Woodstock era, becoming a legend by the time his second album, this one, had come out!

In one year's span of time, we lost Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass Elliott and Janis Joplin...! Now Joplin, as far as I'M concerned, was no great loss, though by no means am I glad she's dead, but Hendrix and Morrison were truly stellar talents that made the world of art and music poorer with their passing. There were TONS more talented female rock singers than Joplin out there and she was the first to admit it, (Mama Cass being one of them!) But Hendrix, perhaps the greatest black crossover artist ever, and Morrison...the musical reincarnation of William Blake himself, THEY left a gaping hole where some truly great music had been!

Maybe if somebody can perfect cloning before their DNA rots TOO thoroughly....

TIME DOES NOT GO BY... Neither in the SPANISH CASTLES MAGIC (nor these all time rock classic album).......2007-03-24

Do you still think any other musicians improved Jimi Hendrix's guitar feeling and technique??. Maybe you can name a few owning excellent skills and probably unforgettable trademark effects in their playing. But JIMI's music is not only fireworks. I strongly recommend you to listen to this remastered album, which by the way. was recorded IN THE LATE SIXTIES!!!. Then you realize why he is still the best rock guitarrist...and composer and singer and performer, but above all guitar hero. Hey!, please do not forget that unfortunately JIMI HENDRIX only recorded three official albums "Electric Layland", "Are You Experienced?" and this "Axis:Bold As Love". The rest of his discography are good profitable businesses for the heirs of its excellent legacy (of course with some exceptions in form of a pair of testimonial live recordings). Also, the best point on this re-issue is the respect (and improvement) on all the original texts and graphics from the original albums. Needless to say that the audio remastering is a plus.

Big news on the Harry Potter musical front: After scoring the first three installments in the series, John Williams has been replaced by Patrick Doyle. Still, Williams never feels far away. His main theme pops up here and there, and a track like "Voldemort," which eloquently illustrates the soul of a blacker-than-black wizard with thunderous cymbal crashes, shrieking horns, tumultuous strings, and a stately finish, firmly belongs in the Williams mode. Overall, Doyle acquits himself well. He can do light when needed ("The Quidditch World Cup," which starts out like some kind of jig), but mostly he's required to be ominous ("The Quidditch World Cup," which ends in martial war chants). Among the highlights are the aforementioned "Voldemort," but also the frantic, overpowering "The Dark Mark." Note that the CD concludes on a jarringly different note with three songs by the Weird Sisters, the group that performs at Hogwarts' Yule Ball. Led by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, the ad hoc band also includes members of Radiohead and Cocker's side project Relaxed Muscle. "Do the Hippogriff" is a fast-paced rocker that somehow comes across like a grungy hybrid of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself." The other two songs--"This Is the Night" and "Magic Works"--are less obvious, and much better. As a collector of movie soundtracks, it was unthinkable not to get this fourth album of the Harry Potter series. After reading the mixed reviews, I was apprehensive as to whether it would sit on my shelf collecting dust or get a good workout in the CD player.

I own all four albums, and as avid a fan as I am of John Williams, I would have to say "The Goblet of Fire" rates up there with "The Philosopher's Stone" (which really did set the standard for the rest of the following albums). In fact, I would have to say that "The Goblet of Fire" is my favourite. The music is quite simply beautiful and atmospheric. Standouts are "Harry In Winter" (this particular track I can't help but have on repeat mode in the car), "Death of Cedric" and "Foreign Visitors Arrive". "The Quidditch Cup" makes me want to catch the next plane to Ireland! And call me old-fashioned, but "Neville's Waltz" and "Potter Waltz" are pleasant and lovely to the ear.

As for the rock songs at the end, I usually bypass them. Some complain about the jarring disconnect between the orchestral aspect of the soundtrack and the loud rock of the end - well, at least they're at the end and not in the middle! And let's face it. How many people would have grumbled that those songs that featured at the Winter Ball were left out?

I've always loved the work of Patrick Doyle (e.g. "Sense and Sensibility" and "Much Ado About Nothing"), and this soundtrack is no exception. He didn't 'fill' John Williams' shoes on this score. He pretty much created a new pair. Harry's story and personality have shifted on. It would be remiss of us to think the music wouldn't evolve as well.

So has this soundtrack lost that feeling of magic? I would have to say a resounding 'no'. It's certainly a lot more listener-friendly than "Chamber of Secrets"!

The Magic is Gone.......2007-05-10

John Williams is not simply a hard act to follow...he's THE hard act to follow. Nonetheless this score falls far short. There was once magic in the land of Hogwarts.. themes were stated boldly and elevated the story, flurries of woodwinds nurtured scenes of flight. Doyle's score does dare to quote William's melodies at 3 points in this score. They are harmonized poorly and treated even worse. The rest of the score just goes downhill from here. He does introduce his own new "themes." These are presented as boring quarter note string lines that you can't seem to remember 10 seconds after you hear them. The rest of the scoreat it's best is a prime example of dated cliches. The dialogue scenes are overly sappy and the action scenes become hokey in an almost silent film music stlye. Watch the graveyard scene again and laugh, check out the dance scene where characters get lifted in the air as simple scales comically mirror their moves. The most common reaction to the music after viewing the film is "I don't really remember it as being good or bad." If you go back and watch it again I think you story will change. The magic is gone.

Atmospheric...But That's About All.......2007-03-31

One of the joys for me of the John Williams "Harry Potter" scores are the lush, melodic leitmotifs. On "The Chamber of Secrets" album alone there are wonderful themes for Fawkes, Dobby and Gilderoy Lockhart, not to mention Colin, Hedwig and The Flying Car. They're charming, evocative pieces that stand alone apart from the moodier, more percussive tracks composed to accompany the actual movie. Unfortunately, there's nothing that even comes close to these in Doyle's "Goblet of Fire" score. There's certainly drama ("The Maze") and pathos ("Death of Cedric"), but nothing thematic that you'd want to hear over and over again. And what themes there are ("Neville's Waltz" for instance) I find woefully banal. (And don't get me started on the acid rock songs that close the album.) So this is a true movie score in the sense that it's pretty much all background music; it certainly creates atmosphere and serves as a reminder of the film's superlative visuals. But what works well in the theater doesn't translate very well for the home audio listener.

This album is a must for an Harry Potter fan, both young and old, from the mild to the extreme. I also recommend the entire collection of soundtracks to the movies. Each one is full of calm, soothing melodies we have come to enjoy from Harry Potter.

At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short and playing it safe for the trappings of fame, Stewart revisits the font of his latest career revival here. But while 2002's It Had To Be You at least turned on the novelty of hearing raspy Rod the Mod tackle a slate of American pop standards with a boozy, world-weary tone that sometimes reinforced the originals' intent with trans-generational flair, the British rock icon unfortunately reverted to form a year later on this 14-track sequel. Set against the laconic, cocktail-friendly productions of vets Richard Perry and Phil Ramone, Stewart's performances seem strangely detached throughout. Even when offered the chance at some real human interaction on a pair of ill-conceived duets with Cher (who at least attempts to bring some dramatic flair to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered") and Queen Latifah (whose recent turn in Chicago informs the title track), Stewart seems almost blissfully unaware of their presence. These are songs that virtually demand to be acted out, not phoned in. Brilliant vocal performances often reinforce the notion of "the singer, not the song;" here that old adage sounds more like a suggestion of where to place the blame for this album's disappointments. --Jerry McCulley

For parents, listening to Dan Zanes provides not only instant Raffi relief, but also the warm sense of belonging to the right crowd. Dan's first album...Wiggle the Wiggles out of your CD Player.......2007-06-12

You may have seen Dan on various spots on Sesame Street, I first saw him in his yellow suit, singing Jump Up. This album continues the wonderful music that my daughter has turned my wife and my self on to. The beats are there, and the lyrics are very catchy.

So do yourself a favor, swap out Wiggles or Barney for Dan and his Friends, and enjoy kids music once again.

Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!

When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.

After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!

We always look for music that is entertaining and enriching for both the toddler and the parent. We had heard Dan sing before on "For the Kids" CD and thought we'd give it a try. We all get down to Dan Zanes House Party! This CD never leaves the car player. The cover is a delightfully drawn board book of Dan & his entorage Whoopin' it up all over town. My 2 year old will "read" the book to me, explaining the pictures and making connections to the music. It's great.

The Roots aren't the only hip-hop group to build their sound around live instrumentation. Yet this Upstate New York quartet doesn't sound much like Philly's finest. Further, As Cruel as School Children is more radio-ready than previous efforts, especially "Cupid's Chokehold," which appropriates Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" to fine effect, i.e. "Take a look at my girlfriend / She's the only one I got." (A different mix appears on The Papercut Chronicles.) Not many indie-pop artists can freestyle, though, as frontman Travis McCoy proves on "Sloppy Love Jingle, Pts. 1-3," a trio of a cappella raps. Aside from dividing these tracks into "periods," "study halls," and the like, in fitting with the high school theme, McCoy's narratives touch on teachers, cheerleaders, and lunch room chatter. Guests include William Beckett (The Academy Is...) on "7 Weeks" and Speech (Arrested Development) on "Biter's Block." Cruel as School Children was co-produced by Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) and released by band mate Pete Wentz's Decaydance imprint. I hadn't really heard much of Gym Class Heroes when I bought this CD. I saw/heard Cupid's Chokehold on Fuse once and that was about it. I bought it based on Amazon's recommendation system. I'm a big fan of hip-hop like Jurassic 5 & A Tribe Called Quest and I have to say, based on my preferences, this CD was excellent. I don't think I've taken this CD out of my car's CD player since I bought it a month ago. It's just really darn good.

Good radio rap never hurt anyone???.......2007-06-22

Trading on their live status and their need to bring back the fun element of hip-hop which has indefinately been missing, this is like being stuck in a wacky-coloured room with four hyperactive but unimaginative goons desperate for you to like them. "Hey cheer up! It might never happen! Watch me bust a move," were the last words they uttered as I clubbed them unconscious with Public Enemy albums...but hey I really like Public Enemy for the record..

Smoothed out and mellow is the modus operandi of this four man crew from Geneva, New York. For those who are seeking a hip hop revival like Common's "Be" last year or the wonderful delight that helped pioneered MF Doom's to greater heights (I'm talking 2004's brilliant Madvillain - Madvillainy) you might want to look elsewhere. Friends this is hip hop for the Hollister/Abercrombie/Lacoste crowd.

To put it into a pop cultural perspective, this is the type of rap you'd expect to catch Dawson or one of the Gilmore Girls listening to, or if we still even cared about him, Seth from the OC. You'd never hear it bumping out of the trunk of any of the thugs on The Shield, that's for sure.

But before you get this impression that I am totally dismissing this album, let me preface back and say that I actually very much so like this work. The Queen And I tells of a drunk girlfriend who's 'only one more swallow from being oh so hollow' (and you're complaining?) over an acoustic strum and a 'hey-hey' chorus. Shoot Down The Stars contrasts a grim verse with a positive chorus of sunshine harmonies.

Their one track which could be redeeming, the of-its-moment track New Friend Request, plays on the desperate need to be liked on the MySpace website, is actually quite clever even if the pieces are a bit taken from Jurassic 5. I mean really the lyrics can appeal to anyone who has used Myspace - 'I didn't take it personal when you ignored my request to be your friend. I spilled my guts and hit send; I waited two weeks for a response and got nothing. Honestly, it only made me want you more.'

Particularly nasty are covers of Jermaine Jackson's We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (To Have a Good Time) which ticks a smug '80s referencing box with no tongue in no cheek.

Talking of musical cross-pollination, Gym Class Heroes may apparently be able to 'put the f u back into fun' but on this evidence they could put something into country music (without the r). Putting the fun back into hip-hop isn't too challenging, but their need to show the breadth of their musical styles when they can't even master one isn't ambition, its truly arrested development.

As Cruel as School Children is a great feel good summer album but with quirky tunes and tongue-in-cheek raps which possibly border a little too much on pop culture, I can't see it surviving much past this year when the scene and pop culture take a new shape in 2008. Still regardless I have to say again I think it's a really fun RAP album to listen to care free, and really in a genre bending so much over hos, bling and pimpin' rides it's a nice diversion from the norm.

What's the big deal about these guys anyway?.......2007-05-06

Gym Class Heroes are an alternative hip-hop band that I discovered on MTV Hits last year when their video "The Queen and I" was playing. I didn't really know what to make of that song, but I still decided to check out the band's latest album, As Cruel As School Children.

I really don't see what all the hype is about these guys. I'm not saying they don't have talent, because the production is definitely on point, and leader Travis McCoy does have a nice flow. It's what he SAYS that's his downfall. If you really listen to the lyrics, you'll find that most of these songs have the stupidest concepts in the world. I realize that the album is following a high school theme, but missteps still can't be ignored, like the statutory "Scandalous Scholastics", a tale about a 15-year-old Travis having relations with one of his teachers (even though that kind of thing isn't really news any more, but...). And there is a series of a cappella raps called "Sloppy Love Jingle" that are all skippable.

If people are wondering where "Cupid's Chokehold" is, the thing is, that's actually a song from the band's previous album The Papercut Chronicles, and the fact that it's being re-released NOW suggests that the guys were getting really desperate for a hit single. And as you know, the song features Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump, and although he sounds fine there, he sounds ridiculous on "Clothes Off", an already horrendous reworking of Jermaine Stewart's "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off", this time stating "We HAVE to take our clothes off."

Lame ideas continue, as "New Friend Request" is a dry story about meeting a girl on MySpace; and although I'm married to a white girl, "Viva la White Girl" didn't do anything for me (probably because it doesn't make much sense). Basically, if Travis rapped more like the way he does on "Shoot Down the Stars", then maybe the band would be more accessible. I'm all for silly music, but As Cruel As School Children is a little too experimental for my taste.

This album when I first saw the cover and the songs they play on the radio I thought it would be just another pop album but I love how they mix pop and rap together to come up with their own style. I especially like the sloppy love jingles especially the last one because that's how most women feel after a night out.

Unclassifiable Dopeness {4 Stars}.......2007-04-03

I'll admit that I didn't really know much about Gym Class Heroes until I saw them at a show with P.O.S. (Rhymesayers) and K-Os (Canada's finest) back in February. I actually went only because I'm a huge K-Os fan. Anyway, after a few listens to this album, the first thing to jump out at me was how tight an MC their frontman Travis McCoy is. He rides beats very well and I gotta say it's great to hear a young, black rapper (can I call him a rapper?) come out and do his own thing instead of trying to imitate Jay Z or any other "thug of the week." His accapella freestyles (the Sloppy Love Jingles) are noteworthy and worth hearing too. Dude can flow and is a capable singer to boot. The topics range from love to MySpace usage. No stone is left unturned with these guys and that, along with a great sense of humor, is part of their charm in my humble opinion.

As far as flaws go, I couldn't really find any. I mean, some songs hit me more than others, but none of them were bad. Just a little skip material here or there, but nothing worth mentioning. I take that back. "Clothes Off!" was a misstep worth mentioning. Travis' flow on this one is dope, but the hook is annoying. It's the only track I consistently skip. The rest is great.

As Cruel As School Children is an album that I recommend to lovers of all kinds of music. Call it hip hop. Call it punk rock. Call it Pop. Call it whatever you want to call it, but just know that it's great stuff no matter what you call it. I, for one, will be seeking out their previous material as well as any future releases. I recommend adding this to your music library.

Tull - Thick as a Brick.......2007-07-13

As an undying fan of the rock opera, my tastes rank the top three in the following order: Genesis, "Lamb"; Tull, "Thick as a Brick" and The Who, "Tommy". Coincidentally, few other rock opera exist unless you include Elton John's "Yellow Brick Road" and The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper". However, I am not completely convinced that a fine line cannot be drawn between what is a collection of songs having a common theme, hence an album, versus a long piece of music that tells a story as is the case with "Lamb" and "Tommy". The question I have, then, is: Given that "Thick as a Brick" is one very long song covering both sides of an LP, does that necessarily qualify it as rock opera? On the CD, Tull comments on the work and clarifies the confusion somewhat by comparing "Thick" as a followup to "Aqualung" as a concept album. I doubt that anyone who has listened to "Aqualung" would fail to understand a story is being told there, but with "Thick as a Brick", is there really a story to it? Yes, there's a progression in how heirs to lands and title "renew the age-old purpose", but a story? I have to believe Ian when he tongue-in-cheek explains how the band spoofed the media into thinking at the time the album was made that the lyrics were written by a 12-year old boy. That is not to say the the lyrics are stupid, by no means! If they had been written by a 12-year old, I would certainly guess the kid to be a genius. But, my question is: Does "Thick as a Brick" tell a story that would qualify it as rock opera? Though, my logical sense says no, my musical sense revels in the marching band cadences, the beautifully constructed acoustic guitar-flute melodies and the way all the pieces mesh. It is truly a rock opera for the ages, whether there's a story to it or not. I love this album! Always have, always will.

Simply a classic. This is a Tull album that will never go out of style and can be played over and over. In fact, I've done just that. I'm not an afficianado, but I know what I like. I like Tull. And I like this album.

Many years ago, I purchased "Thick as a Brick" on vinyl, expecting a traditional rock album, with a collection of 8 to 10 songs. I was amazed that there was only one song covering both sides. I listened to it once and was completely lost once it got past the first 3 minute edit I had heard on the radio several times.

I was so bewildered that I returned the album for a refund and was suspicious of Jethro Tull for a few years, thinking that maybe they were just too unorthodox for my tastes.

Now that I own all of the Jethro Tull CDs, I am obviously a huge Tull fan and my opinion of "Thick as a Brick" is quite different. I like this album. It might be the best album Tull ever recorded. Or maybe "A Passion Play" is the best (which is similar to "Thick as a Brick" in the sense that they both are continuous play with many movements within).

Or maybe the idea of a single song covering an entire album is too preteneous and less enjoyable for the listener who doesn't have over 40 minutes to spare in one sitting. I'd say that someone who is just starting to get to know Jethro Tull's music should start with an album with a traditional song format. You could choose 'Crest of a Knave,' 'Songs from the Wood,' 'Catfish Rising,' 'Benefit' or 'A.'

Still, this album is nearly one of a kind. If you are relatively new to Tull, I'd play it safe and buy any of the 'Songs from the Wood,' 'Heavy Horses,' 'Stormwatch,' 'A' albums or perhaps 'Crest of a Knave.' But if you tend to like progressive, ambitious albums, buy this one.

Muddled, Pretentious - But Catchy.......2007-04-27

I cannot believe the way some people go on about this LP ... geez ... here's the reality if it. There's some good material here, enough for 4 or 5 good songs. It's mostly on Side 1. Side 2 is like some weird "remix" of similar themes that is fairly unnecessary. The whole weaving of the songs together and pretense towards viewing this as a "concept album" or some merging of pop and classic forms is unnecessary and serves the material badly. So do a few of the arrangements with bouncing pipe organ and so forth that will make most non-fans wince and remind many of us of Spinal Tap's "Stonehenge" (the penultimate Tull parody) and so forth. And the muddy recording quality does this material no favors either.

That's not to say this is a disaster, because Anderson was still writing good stuff, with energy and imagination. I think we would have all been better served if the tracks were broken out seperately and the pretense removed - if this could have been halfway-a-concept-album, songs that relate instead of interlink, like "Aqualung".

They overreached, and the results are mildly interesting.

a Jethro Tull fanatic, but I am an old time rocker and I love both Thick as a Brick and Aqualung, and never get tired of putting either in my player and reveling in the past. The other reviewers have done a great job commenting on the arrangements, the musicianship, the lyrics, etc. so I won't attempt to add anything. My point is that there are any number of musicians who write a song or two or even three spoofing the life and times of a rock and roller, e.g. Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good" and John Entwhistle's "Success Story", but a whole record spoofing the genre, i.e. the "concept" album, in a rather subtle way was and still is remarkable. I can remember the rock critics of those days desperately trying to discern the message when the message ultimately is, no more and no less, just great music. So, buy it, play it, and just plain enjoy it for what it is.

I am in love with this CD... it is almost aways in my CD player

few people into the sick puppies outside australia would know that dressed up as life is actually the bands second LP. they're first LP was called 'welcome to the realworld' and released on transistor records who dropped the band after the cd wasn't a breakout hit like it should of been.

i've been into the pups since they we're discovered on Triple J with the song nothing really matters. (JJJ is OZ's largest and best youth radio station.) that first album and the follow up EP 'FLY' are both awesome and ironically no longer in print which is a shame. although since i own original copies of both means they are probly worth alot now that the puppies have been shot to stardom thanks to youtube and a little song called 'all the same'.

anyway that earlier work was brilliantly layered songwriting. it was alot more angrier and beautiful than D.U.A.L but completely ignored and unpopular. this was mainly due to the bands sound being to heavy and full of swearing - a big no-no for commercial radio (case in point google the lyrics for 'rock kids')

they were soon dropped by the label and fell into obscurity. i genuinly thought it would be the last of the pups but i heard rumours they had moved to LA to colaborate with muso's. several years later a free hugs campaign filmed by singer/guitarist shimon to the bands song 'all the same' hit you tube and was an overnight success.

this was my first taste of the sick puppies new songs and sound which was completely noticible straight away to me. i want to make it clear that i really like the bands new album (hence the 4 stars) and am excited this little aussie 3 piece could crack the hard international market. and all they had to do was keep the same great songwriting, just tone down the language and up the ballads. the lyrics in D.U.A.L are ok but some are lame and slightly emo (i'm sure gerard way could of written the lyrics for pitiful.) regardless this album has some great songs and is completely solid, personal favourites include my world, what are you looking for, all the same, too many words and cancer.

anyway congratulations sick puppies, i'm proud. and cheers 4 reading.

Excellent..I enjoyed every cut. Not going to compare them to anyone tho a couple of other indie bands spring to mind. Looking forward to hearing more from down-under.

Not a bad buy..........2007-05-16

A quality album with a few top notch songs. In a nutshell, however, most of the songs aren't as great as "All The Same" -- which is probably what brought the album to your attention in the first place. That being said, at least a couple other tracks such as "World" and "Deliverance" make it well worth the buy. I wouldn't hesitate to see them live and still recommend the album.

Saw these guys live in concert...then saw their "Free Hugs" video online (check it out) - really solid rock with genuine emotion. Highly recommend (especially the lyrics to "Cancer")!

During her far-too-brief career, cellist Jacqueline du Pré exhibited an almost oracular power of communication. Her performances bristled with the kind of brilliant electricity that could change lives and convert listeners to a lifelong love of music. Happily, it's possible to experience a sense of that power from the recordings du Pré completed before multiple sclerosis halted her career as a performer in the early 1970s. This set provides a splendid portrait--at bargain price--of du Pré's unmistakable personality: the astonishingly original yet convincing phrasing, raw energy, and ability to make her instrument sound uncannily like a human voice (du Pré was after all a favored student of Mstislav Rostropovich). Her rendition of Haydn's Concerto in C is clearly cast in a romantic--and nowadays perhaps unfashionable--mold, yet du Pré's big, bold tone carries the musical line forward with exhilarating presence. Jacquline du Pres interprettation of some of the moast famous cello consertos is simply amasing. her music just flows with energy and abbowe all passion. she realy brings out the qaleties of the cello with intensety and softnes intertwined. music bursting with passion.

UNTIL I was fortunate enough to have heard them performed by Jacqueline du Pre!!!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Her superb playing, along with truly masterful
interpretative skills, just "comes pouring out of the speakers!"
Also, the orchestras were obviously truly inspired by these opportunities to perform and record with one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The sound quality is excellent, as is the separation and clarity of both the soloist's and orchestral performances. The overall dynanism is also top notch - I found I had to lower the volume substantially from my normal
system loudness levels.
I've enjoyed this set so much I'll probably wind up buying everything from Amazon that EMI has produced with Jacqueline du Pre's name on it!

The choice of concertos is excellent and the artistry of Jacqueline du Pre is exceptional. The Schumann and Saint-Saens works are truly beautiful.

The album is a fitting tribute to the tragic loss of an incredible young talent.

I love this CD. It came extremely fast to NZ and a bonus too as I was expecting only one cd not three!
While Dvorak is currently my favourite, other composers featured here have been growing on me.
Never been a Cello devotee in the past, but I am enjoying this new phase of my musical listening.
The late Ms du Pre plays with vigor and assertiveness, yet manages to convey those moving and sublime moments when needed.
