Classic Brazilian "choro" music with a spacegrass twist.......2005-07-27

In the early 1990s, newgrass mandolin whiz Mike Marshall got the bug for Brazilian "choro" music, a mainly-instrmental Dixieland-ish style that's as old as the samba and three times as fast... He's joined here by folks such as Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Andy Narell and Brazilian-born pianist Jovino Santos Neto, in a surprisingly strong, cheerfully playful set... Lots of fun and performed with a real understanding for the music. Recommended!

PS - this album has been reissued on the Adventure Music label (in 2005), with three added tracks.

Bright, exciting Brazilian music on mandolin!.......2003-08-15

I just discovered this amazing CD at our local library. Mike Marshall, a gifted mandolinist who has played with David Grisman, Montreux, the Modern Mandolin Quintet and numerous renowned acoustic musicians, teams up here with some of his virtuoso friends for exciting duets of Brazilian choro music.

Choro has its roots in turn of the (twentieth) century Brazil "when immigrant musicians (European, folk and classical) blended their musical traditions with the African and indigenous rhythms of this fertile land" (from the liner notes). Here Marshall plays this music on his bright bluegrass mandolin, accompanied on various tracks by, among others, Bela Fleck on banjo, Edgar Meyer on string bass, and Michael Manring on two-handed tapping electric bass. These interpretations reflect the musical sensibilities of these gifted performers.

This music is cheerful, rhythmic, crisp, and for the most part a nice acoustic jazz-classical blend. If you enjoy mandolin or Latin American music, this CD is worth a listen!

mike marshall is simply the first and only american mandolinist to play brazilian choro with an aproximate rhythm sense to those of the brazilians , with extraordinaire technique and sense of melody. edgar meyer marks his presence as always , embelishing the ground..... a great record for those who wish to surpass the boundaries of traditional bluegrass and get introduced to its brazilian jazzy cousin , the CHORO....
