Editorial Reviews
With Our Story, Shahrzad Sepanlou makes her solo debut onto the Persian music scene. No stranger to the scene, she began her professional singing career as one-third of the female trio Silhouettt.
Product Description
Our Story is not so much a political statement -- though no story of the Iranian experience is fully told without making one -- as it is an emotional tour de force. It is an album about memories of the homeland and losing friends and all that is familiar, but it is also about finding strength and love in the face of those losses.
Work on Our Story began when Shahrzad joined talents with an old friend and Silhouettt collaborator, Farzin Farhadi. Farzin is a saxophonist and composer, playing both roles -- as well as producer and songwriter -- for this album. He has several of his own instrumental CDs on the American market, including: My World, and In a Faraway Land.
Our Story contains 9 songs--8 originals and 1 remake. Lyrics are written by such writers as Partow Nooriala, Mohammad Ali Sepanlou and Zoya Zakarian, three very well known and well loved artists in the Iranian community. This CD has a fresh sound combining the western jazz and techno sounds and beat with more traditional Iranian melodies.

Thank God for Cross Movement.......2007-06-06
But if this is the Cross Movement's last project as a group, I would like to comment on their impact on me. I'm a 30 year old Black male, but because of my deep southern religious upbringing, was never a major part of "hip hop culture" as a child. I would hear hip hop at school or occasionally sneak to watch a few videos when my parents (father-pastor, mother- missionary) weren't around. I enjoyed some songs, but never became a major hip hop head. Even then, I preferred the Southern style to the East Coast flavor. I can say, without hyperbole, that Cross Movement has had the greatest effect on me embracing some elements of hip hop culture, while also cultivating my faith in Christ.
As a budding, potential scholar myself, I am very much impressed and captivated by their knowledge of the Holy Scripture and their ability to articulate Old and New Testament principles, translating them into an artistic language that is relevant to those alive during this generation. They seem, as a whole, to avoid denominational, schismatic issues and focus primarily on plain Biblical tenets. There is rarely a song that does not include the Gospel or cross of Christ.
Finally, and this is a comment that I make about other Christian artists whom this applies to. They are fully cognizant that they are practicing an expression of their faith which is seen as radical, and that many are hostile to, but they have remained focused, preaching the message of Jesus Christ, His Cross, and His Holiness. They have learned the art of being radical without being rebellious.
Cross Movement members:
If you all read this review-- May God continue to use and bless you all. Continue the work of the Lord in whatever capacity the Spirit leads you.

This all-Bernstein disc includes four compositions in addition to the title piece, of which only the "Serenade" was originally written for solo violin and orchestra. John Corigliano made the arrangement of "Make Our Garden Grow," the famous final song from Candide, and William David Brohn, who had long been close to Bernstein's music, arranged two songs from On the Town. His West Side Story Suite is a free adaptation rather than an arrangement; he calls it the greatest adventure of his musical life. However, the real hero of the recording is Joshua Bell, for whom Sony commissioned the Suite; he collaborated closely with Brohn in its creation and contributed one of the two cadenzas. Not surprisingly, its violin part, as well as those of the other arrangements, are written to his strengths, which seem to be growing and expanding all the time. His virtuosity is breathtaking and he revels in it with unbridled exuberance. His tone is ravishingly beautiful, intense, focused, pure; it can generate a warm glow and a radiant shimmer. His facility and silvery sound in the violin's topmost register have always been particularly striking and are displayed throughout to terrific effect. He handles Bernstein's multifaceted style, rhythm, and idiom with easy, natural mastery. His love and respect for the music come through in his ability to identify with its swiftly changing moods and in his strongly felt, direct expressiveness. --Edith Eisler

"West Side Story" may not be a Sibelius concerto, but it is still a beautifully rendered, worthwhile piece of music. Bell's emotive musicianship raises the piece to a new height. His technique is unparalleled, and the pathos he creates during "Maria" and "Somewhere" is just stunning. His gorgeous cadenzas seem like they belonged in "West Side Story" all along, and his playing evokes an impressive range of emotions.
This retooling of "West Side Story" also attests to Leonard Bernstein's staying power. While classical purists mired in the 19th century aim to dimiss Bernstein as just a flash in the pan, the "West Side Story" suite suggests that his music will endure. This is one "crossover" that's worth buying.

This is a great series of recordings. Leonard Slatkin has generally chosen the right balance of music for the composers used in the series (with terrific cover art from Thomas Hart Benton). This disc is devoted to Copland's film music. The treat here is a version of The Heiress Suite reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Copland's talent for writing for films rested in his ability to identify and maintain themes, at the same time not slacking on the transitional details. This belongs in any Copland collection. --Paul CookCustomer Reviews:

Great recording of definitive American film music.......2004-04-08
How nice it is then to be able to go back to the source, and have rendered in so superb a fashion as it is by Slatkin & the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin, as usual, upholds his reputation as one of the leading interpreters of American music.
This CD contains the premier recording of "The Heiress Suite," which is a delight to listen to, and of course the fairly well-known "Red Pony" music. Is their a more quintessential piece of "Western" music than the "Walk to the Bunkhouse?" How does a jewish boy from Brooklyn nail it on the head so perfectly, anyway?
Other selections include "Music for Movies," a collection of bits & pieces from an assortment of Copland-scored movies that Copland arranged in 1943, and "Music for Radio," an earlier composition that isn't really "movie music," but fits well with the rest of the compositions on this CD.
Instead of wasting your time on movie soundtracks that are nothing more than just derivitave hack jobs, listen to music by a composer who had truly mastered his craft.

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02
She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.
She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.
Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.
"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.
Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.
She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.

Copland conducts Copland.......2003-11-27
It's very apparent in Copland's numerous recordings for Columbia (now available on Sony) that the composer left an important legacy. Among the more original American composers, Copland was distinctly American. He enjoyed a fine musical education from Nadia Boulanger in Paris that gave his compositions some added depth. Initially, Copland followed George Gershwin's example and made considerable use of jazz and blues in his works. Copland himself said he felt he soon exhausted the possibilities of popular music and then turned to American folk music.
A trip to Mexico, where he met and befriended Carlos Chavez, resulted in Copland's first great musical triumph, "El Salon Mexico." It became the only Copland work to ever be conducted by Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. On this CD one has a chance to hear the composer himself conducting this 1936 triumph.
This writer has long enjoyed Copland's wonderful music for the 1948 Technicolor western "The Red Pony," an adaptation of the John Steinbeck story by Lewis Milestone that starred Myrna Loy and a young Robert Mitchum. The music is such an important ingredient in this classic film. Fortunately, Copland extracted a concert suite from the film score and it is included in this CD.
Copland wrote other film scores, too, and we get to hear some of the music he wrote for the 1940 film adaptation of Thornton Wilder's very American play, "Our Town."
The CD includes some additional Latin-influenced works, "Danzon Cubano," which rivals Gershwin's "A Cuban Overture," and "Three Latin American Sketches." These are very colorful, exciting works.
Perhaps, as some have said, the London Symphony Orchestra and the New Philharmonic Orchestra were not up to par in these recordings. Some of that may have been Copland's fault. Still, these are competent performances and they convey what the composer wanted.
Profound.......2003-10-31
review and comparison with Slatkin's CD.......2003-05-10
Comparing the two versions of ÒOur TownÓ, for example, the difference in character is striking. With Copland the tempo is much slower, the intensity is proportionally much greater, and Copland, with a composerÕs sense of intimacy with his score and the music intended behind it, derives more musicality out of each phrase and note than I hear in SlatkinÕs faster-paced performance. The same can be said for the rest of CoplandÕs CD--what the older recording might lack in technical musicianship, it makes up for in greater interpretive depth. While it is aggravating sometimes to hear instruments out of tune (and I am only assuming that what sounds out of tune to me today was equivalently considered out of tune back then), the tradeoff may be worth it for some.

At a time when the fighting in Iraq brings out more pain than patriotism in a majority of vocal Americans, Keni Thomas--a smooth-voiced Georgia musician and former Army member of Task Force Ranger, sent into the Mogadishu of Black Hawk Down--steps forward with a collection of songs that restore the poignancy and eloquence of the good fight. Never bombastic in the vein of Toby Keith nor rabble-rousing à la Darryl Worley, Thomas--who wrote or cowrote all 10 tracks with an ear for classic country and rock--simply tells the stories of the men and women in uniform. "Not Me," which boasts no less than Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals, is an eloquent and understated paean to leadership and courage, while "Circle on the Cross," featuring a spoken introduction by Kenny Rogers, spotlights a military marking worth remembering. Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Michael McDonald, Blackhawk, and Shawn Mullins also lend their efforts to this surprising, affecting project. (Proceeds partly benefit the Hero Fund and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provide college tuition to the children of Special Ops personnel who die in training or combat.) --Alanna NashAlbum Description
Flags Of Our Fathers is a collection of songs wirtten by Thomas that tell stories inspired by life in the military and those who serve our nation.
