2 out of 5 stars Canned Churchill.......2007-01-04

Here they are! The most famous speeches of the great Prime Minister, providing "the roar" of the British Lion in 1940 and beyond. The words are all there, spoken by the Great Man himself - but, alas, with one or two exceptions, these are not the original speeches, delivered in the House of Commons, or live, in radio address. This is Churchill, at some later time, reading his speeches, in a recording studio, and what is missing is the electricity, the immediacy, the humor, the charisma of the Man in the Moment, not to mention the very real reactions he drew from his audiences. Well, it's better than nothing - the words are still magnificent - but better to find recordings of the originals, as delivered, live and unedited.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Sir Winston.......2006-06-27

A very nice series of his major wartime speeches. Sir W's ability to turn a phrase, to see the big issue, to connect with his audience, are very much on display here. I've been to where he was born, and where he was interred after doing so much to stand up to tyranny, and I've read many of his works, but there is nothing to compare to hearing his words, just as they were heard more than 60 years ago by those brave people that followed him to victory over an obscene and genocidal dictator. We all owe a lot to Sir Winston.

5 out of 5 stars Superb oration and use of language. Very inspiring........2006-06-11

This is an abridged collection of some of Churchill's greatest speeches. I have listened to this CD numerous times and after every listen I am inspired, motivated, and reminded of the great art of oration. Churhill truly had a gift for sculpting language and history into an art form.

An excellent abridged collection of timeless oratory from a true leader.

Great speeches. Very moving even after all these years.

4 out of 5 stars A good selection of a great speaker.......2005-08-09

Wow! Listening to Churchill during war time sends shivers up my spine. What a speaker! This is a good selection of some of his best. Sound quality varies, but is acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars A great voice from the past silenced too soon.......2006-05-24

Here is a selection of popular lieder by Fritz Wunderlich, who died tragically at age 36, silencing one of the century's great voices. Surely no accounting of great artists who died before their maturity could be complete without Wunderlich's name.

Here he displays the wonderful timbre, range and sensitivity in his voice, which was conspicuously consistent across the range, regardless of the music he was interpreting or the venue in which he performed. The character of his voicing, enunciation and the structure of his tone and vibrato are virtually without fault throughout this recording, made in the studio with both accompanist and orchestra in 1963, three years before his untimely death.

I bought this to hear his interpretation of Beethoven's only song cycle, "To the Distant Beloved." The notes to this issue concentrate on the music-drama inherent in the songs. I wouldn't call this accounting of the Beethoven as dramatic as singers perform today. It is miles ahead of the inadequate concert performance recorded a year or two back by Goerne and Brendel but, in terms of drama, Wunderlich's work is neither as dramatic or episodic as recordings by Stephen Genz and Thomas Allen.

However, no singer quite has Wunderlich's instrument, a firm, supple and sensitive voice that adjusts to any music and any situation. It is also a bit unfair to compare the baritones above to Wunderlich's tenor.

I found equal pleasure in his renditions of Haydn's lesser known and lesser quality songs and the group of orchestral Strauss lied performed on this disk. Wunderlich performs the Strauss with far more drama and flair than the Beethoven, where he seems almost an introverted lost sould seeking lost love.

All told, this is a treasurable tome from one of the great singers in history in good mid-1960s sound that has dimension, quality and depth. The soloist may be a bit more forward than we epxect in the period-influenced new century but this is no matter. Here is an exhibition of singing that is above criticism and beyond approach. Even the greatest singers in history would weep gladly upon hearing this CD. So will you.

      4 out of 5 stars Multi-Talented and First-Rate Performers.......2000-09-08

Columbia's idea to gather a group of artists one Sunday morning each month for a radio show is unique. Often the results of similar "live" and "unplugged" sessions are mediocre: many musicians, without the help of studio production trickery, sound less than delightful live. Fortunately, the results of Columbia Records Radio Hour Volume I are gratifying. The featured artists are all multi-talented and first-rate performers: singers, songwriters and musicians. Their professionalism well withstands the "first take" approach. The majority of music is acoustic folk and soft rock - very intimate and mid-tempo. The atmosphere is impromptu and relaxed.

For instrumental performance, it should be no surprise that the guitar work of Bruce Cockburn is dazzling and majestic - he is nothing less than a master. The innovative and understated stand-up bass of Rob Wasserman is showcased on several selections. A surprise for me is the finger-picking skills of Mary Chapin Carpenter: she holds her own ground. In comparison to the other tracks, Darden Smith's `The Levee Song" rocks. The Godfather of Melancholy, Leonard Cohen, is as gravel-sounding and as off-key as ever; but his poetry is wonderful. The standout track is `Wouldn't It Be Lovely' (from My Fair Lady) by Rosanne Cash. The audience is exceptionally quiet during the vocal, piano, and guitar song. Rosanne is breathtaking. In summary, Columbia Records Radio Hour features a hefty sixty-six minutes of "the best of the best" in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

4 out of 5 stars A superb sampling of various popular folk.......1998-12-09

Unfortunately, the Sunday morning Columbia Records Radio Hour was not broadcast in the Boston area to my knowledge, so I have no detailed information of the radio broadcasts themselves. Nonetheless, volume one is a nice sampler, with a solid mix of folk & country based artists.

The brightest moments belong to Bruce Cockburn, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Rosanne Cash. Cockburn is benefitted by the always-tasteful upright bass of Rob Wasserman, which gives plenty of bottom to the inflective "Lord Of The Starfields" and the engaging "Lovers In A Dangerous Time." In fact, I prefer this version of the latter to the studio original.

Shawn Colvin is represented by an intimate "Polaroids", where her angelic voice is complemented by a variety of interesting rhythms. Mary Chapin Carpenter add supple harmonies on the great "Shotgun Down The Avalanche", and Colvin returns the favor for a gorgeous reading of Carpenter's "Come On Come Over" that gives a prime example of the benefits of hushed dynamics. Rosanne Cash, with help from John Leventhal, turns "Wouldn't It Be Lovely" into a country/folk swing, while former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne adds ideosynchric harmonies to "What We Really Want." Peter Himmelman also fares well with the intimate feel of "Raina."

Like most various artists compilations, though, the variety of music meets its limits in terms of acquired tastes. Your mileage may vary, but the Leonard Cohen songs feel out of place in comparison to the acoustic-based artists: Whereas most of the songs eschew warmth and human emotion, Cohen's are almost too cold and calculating. Darden Smith's "The Levee Song" is pleasant, but almost appears like a leftover in comparison to the other contributions.

The disc closes with a classy reading of a touching "Cry Of A Tiny Babe", with Cockburn aided by Lou Reed (who handles the second verse), Rosanne Cash (providing tasteful harmonies), and Wasserman. A fine touch to a CD that not only chronicles portion of the Columbia Records Radio Hour, but also as a fine sampler to artists whose works deserve plenty of attention.

5 out of 5 stars Bizet: Les Pêcheurs De Perles.......2004-02-03

Advice for the San Diego gentleman: listen to the recording first before sending in your comments. It's laughable to blindly defend Nicolai Gedda's singing in Nadir's role without even listening to the recording!

While I gave this recording five stars for its glorious sound and very good performance from all stars including Mr. Nicolai Gedda, he does indeed sound a bit strained in the romance "Je crois encore entendre". This is not surprising since Bizet wrote this passage in extremely high notes!

I highly recommend this recording to all Bizet fans.

      5 out of 5 stars My review.......2003-02-17

Nicolai Gedda is my favorite tenor in the non-Italian repertory. He excelled in French, German, and operetta roles, both French and Viennese. Even though I have not listened to this recording yet, I am sure that he does a good job in this recording of Bizet's second most popular opera after the ubiquitous "Carmen". He was a great Don José, the best non-French one who ever recorded the role (no offense to Corelli, Domingo, and Vickers). It is fair to assume that he does a good job with the demanding role of Nadir. To say that he sometimes sounds a bit strained in this role is blasphemous. He excelled in roles that had high tessituras. He had great success in "Le Postillon de Lonjumeau", "Oberon", and "Benvenuto Cellini". This recording was made in October 1960. Gedda was only at the beginning of his glorious prime. Do not believe the person who said he sounds strained in this role. He is biased against Gedda, who happens to be one of his fellow countrymen. Gedda also was very committed dramatically to each and every role that he sung. To say that he sings Nadir's aria without any emotions is false exaggeration in the greatest sense. Gedda was a superb interpreter of French roles and it can be assumed, on my part that is, that he gives an above-average performance in this opera. Remember, I have not listened to this recording yet.

3 out of 5 stars middle of the road performance.......2001-11-06

This is a perfect example of studio recordings with opera stars that ought to be very good, but somehow fails. There is nothing obviously 'wrong' with this recording, but it surely doesn't engage either.

The voices are generally good - Gedda's Nadir is smooth and beautiful, idiomatic in style, if sometimes a little strained under pressure - and that's not strange - Nadir's writing is very high. The romance 'je crois entendre encore' is however a wonder of precision and smoothness, technically perfect indeed, but it's rather hard to imagine that he sings a romance when there's no trace of feelings there. Janine Micheau on the other side is as always rather dry in tone, but perfectly french in style, and her vibrato is not as wide as it sometimes could be - and her performance is, I think, the most 'felt' of the three main roles. Ernest Blanc as Zurga is also rather unengaged, although with a firm and effective voice. The conducting is also rather uninspired, and perhaps that's the main problem, cause an uninspired conductor can damage a whole performance.

There are at least three better recordings according to my taste, and one of them stand clearly ahead of the other: the live recording from 1959 with Vanzo/Micheau/Baquier and Rosenthal as conductor, available here on Amazon.com. A typically french performance with all the positive effects of a live recording captured in good sound and hardly none of the negative ones, combined with wonderful singers in their prime. Vanzo, as Nadir, is alone worth the purchase (it's also budget priced!). Thereafter I think the two mono recordings from Philips (Simoneau/Alarie/Bianco/Fournet) and EMI (Legay/Angelici/Dens/Cluytens) are good. There are studio recording with more modern sound, but they all let you down in one way or the other - you might as well go for this one in comparission to them.

Compared to other more modern stereo versions, this one has the great advantage of giving us highlights from the very rare Bizet opera 'Ivan IV' with an other conductor and different cast. For the real Bizet fans this alone might be worth the purchase, but if you just want a good version of this lovely opera, go for one of the three I've mentioned above.

4 out of 5 stars Opera to love.......2000-04-19

Bizet wrote some of the most beautiful melodies in classical music, and this opera abounds with some of his best. Filled with breathtaking arias, the exotic setting of Ceylon and glorious poetry, The Pearl Fishers is more lush and visceral than Carmen. James Michener's The Drifters was my introduction to this opera; in the Winona Ryder version of Little Women, Gabriel Byrne as Professor Baehr takes Jo to a production of Les Pecheurs de Perles. This is a wonderful recording of a very accessible piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful piece of work.......1998-12-07

This wonderful piece of work by Bizet is not as popular as Carmen, and this is a pity, for the melodies and voice registers used by the composers are really talking to the soul. This version, although not recent, is the best I know by the quality of performers and sound recording. Definitely worth buying.

I'm the reviewer who's been warning about the recent NatLamp shlock being sold by the recent purchasers of the National Lampoon name. THIS CD however is the Real Deal even though the publication date is after 2002: When you see the names on the cover here, you know it's funny.

4 out of 5 stars I don't like it here in France, everyone's so snobby!.......2005-09-22

This CD is a reissue of an old album that featured bits from The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Almost all of the routines here are included on The National Lampoon Radio Hour box set. I would recommend getting the box set instead of this CD, but if you don't feel like springing for that, this is good, too.

      4 out of 5 stars I have the answer!!!.......2002-03-25

To those of you looking for "That's Not Funny, That's Sick" - I found it. I shared your frustration ("I've also made pizza"), but cdstreet.com came through. They have it in all its glory. It was a little pricey ("they be chargin' us for stamps, they say..."), and looks almost like a home-made job (e.g., no label on the CD), but who cares. Good luck to all -- by the way, buy Gold Turkey, too. It has some classics as well,...

I concur with those who say this stuff is good but does not rise to the level of "That's not funny, that's sick". When are they going to make this golden oldie available? I've searched everywhere and can not find it.

Without the writers and performers behind the National Lampoon Radio Hour, comedy today would be an altogether different beast. In truth, it wouldn't be nearly so beastly. For a time, overeducated, chemically altered white boys with attitudes were an extraordinary font of humor, and they didn't come much more educated, altered, white, and boyish than the Nat Lamp crew. Led first by Michael O'Donoughue and later by John Belushi, the radio program lasted from 1973 to 1975, with many of its creators then moving on to the inaugural company of Saturday Night Live. But if TV proffered innately impertinent, un-P.C. types like O'Donoughue, Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Gilda Radner in slightly deluded form, and movies would further water down their personas, radio served them up in all their concentrated glory. The show, as this astonishing 3 CD box demonstrates, was the comic equivalent of a lethal speedball. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Radio Dinner due for release in May 2005 at amazon.co.uk.......2005-01-26

I recently went to nationallampoon.com and contacted them, asking if "Radio Dinner" and "Goodbye Pop" would ever be released on CD. The answer I got back was from somebody who apparently never even heard of the albums because he said that those titles may someday be re-released on CD... but they never have been! If you read the liner credits on some of the recent compilations, you'll know that Radio Dinner and Goodbye Pop were probably the best NatLamp albums ever! One even says that Radio Dinner is still the best-selling NatLamp album to date!!!

This box set is the best you're gonna get until those albums come out... if they ever do! You can get a track here and there on the recent compilation releases, but where oh where is my beloved "Art Rock Suite", arguably the most ambitiously produced musical satire ever produced!

Radio Dinner is scheduled for release in May 2005 at amazon.co.uk so hopefully in the USA as well.

Now come on NatLamp and release my personal favorite Good Bye Pop!

5 out of 5 stars Second helping of RADIO DINNER and GOODBYE POP please........2004-02-08

This collection of Radio Hour skits is great stuff, but it leaves out the most over-the-top material from this era. Who can forget the spot-on send-ups of Joan Baez, John Lennon or Helen Reddy? How about the travel commercial for Haiti or the C&W song "Clap Is Just The B Side Of Love"? Or "Kung Fu Christmas"?
Are we too repressed now to handle it?
      Too dumb? Too many lawyers?

4 out of 5 stars But I STILL want the old "Radio Dinner" album..........2002-12-12

Yes, this is gorgeous humor. But honestly, WHEN will they re-release the old "Radio Dinner" album? Us baby boomers wanna re-live the exciting days of the Nixon/McGovern campaign:
"Some of you are asking, why, in announcing our complete withdrawal from Vietnam, and the legalization of marijuana, I am wearing these ludicrous headlamps on my ears. Well, let me explain."

      ::sigh::

But this one will do until that happy day.

      wistfully,

5 out of 5 stars It just gets better and better.......2002-09-30

This three volume set is so funny. I just with it was longer (that is my only complaint). The funny thing is, the more you listen to it, the funnier it gets.

Not only did I buy a copy for myself, but two months later I got a copy for my sister (we share the same type of humor).

Hearing John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Christopher Guest, and alumni doing spoofs of Marlon Brando, Charles Bronson, Joni Mitchell, Clint Eastwood, Gregory Peck, and James Taylor are simply hilarious.

Surprisingly, the jokes have held up very well, and not as out of date as I would have thought. A smart, refreshing, hilarious send up of just about everything, National Lampoon delivers the goods.

5 out of 5 stars Please issue Radio Dinner on CD.......2002-09-07

The box set is well worth having. But what I'd really like to see is the classic National Lampoon Radio Dinner LP released on CD. "Deteriorata" and "Catch It and You Keep It" are classics. (If you're a fan of the Bob & Tom radio show, you've probably heard them do their lifted version of "Catch It and You Keep It" on April Fool's Day.) Any record execs listening?

5 out of 5 stars Reagan Rocks Once Again!.......2002-08-05

The Gipper again makes us feel good to be Americans as he takes us back to a time when being an American was not easy. This recording was made around the time he was Governor of California and our country was going through the changes of the sixties. He's the perfect narrator for such a wonderful time in our nation's history.

5 out of 5 stars REAGAN TAKES YOU THERE & MAKES IT LIVE!.......2001-08-10

Whether you're a researcher, history buff or proud and patriotic American, you will appreciate this work. With stirring music and realistic sound effects, Ronald Reagan takes you to the front lines of the Revolutionary War through the excellent portrayal of one fighting it, in the tradition of the old "You Were There" radio program. The listener with a good imagination and cursory knowledge of the event will be able to smell the gunpowder, or shake hands with George Washington as he crosses the Delaware. This is an excellent way to introduce today's American to his heritage, and would be a choice addition to a private or public library, as the cover notes say it "deserves to be heard, over and over again. Lest we forget." If you know where the film may be obtained on VHS or DVD, PLEASE contact me.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary War Brought to Life.......2001-01-24

Ronald Reagan, before he was President, narrating the story of the political and military struggle for independence from distant & dictatorial Britain. Reagan's actor's voice is at its peak, the warm baritone obviously emotionally connected with the material. Hearing about the crafting of the glorious and traitorous Declaration, which immediately put the Signers into mortal jeopardy, will shock you as no textbook could. This CD will bring tears to your eyes and evoke a patriotic wistfulness you did not know you had. It will also provoke some interesting thoughts on the state of our Nation, its Citizens, and its Leaders today.
