Nakai's free improvisations on this album are based on his impressions of the Anasazi and Sinagua sites, ancient cliff dwellings that were home to communities of Native people thousands of years ago. By using the Roland SDE 3000 Digital Delay system, Nakai is able to play duets with his own echo, in an effort to emulate the echoes of the past that haunt these ruins. On this recording, Nakai's flute sounds even more plaintive than usual, as if the spirits of these forgotten ancestors had entered into the studio to fill his playing with the whispered reverberations of their ancient ways. This is one of Nakai's most deeply felt recordings, one that resonates with a deep, melancholy yearning. --j. poet

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful.......2007-01-15

I first heard of R. Carlos Nakai on the music channel I have on cable and I instantly fell in love with his music. This album is simply amazing, it's beauty is haunting and I can't begin to tell everyone how very pleased I am with my purchase of this cd. Every song is a masterpiece and the fact that each song is played in a canyon/cave adds to the mysterious quality of the music. This is a great album for anyone who is interested in Native American flute music and Nakai is the best in this genre.

R. Carlos Nakai is the best of the best among those playing Native American flute, and this C.D. is his absolute best. It transports one into higher dimensions and brings peace. I can't say enough good stuff about this C.D. I had wanted it for years and I finally got it! It was worth the wait.

Nakai's most recent outing finds him returning once again to the simple under-produced style that he pioneered on Changes. This program includes 10 traditional tunes from the Kiowa, Lakota, Dakota, Zuni, and Cheyenne; seven of his own compositions; and "Lake That Speaks," from the second movement of James DeMars's "Two World Concerto." On this album the Native melodies sound forceful, almost triumphant, partially due to the short, staccato bursts that Nakai often uses to begin a melodic line--sounds that bring to mind a child's laughter or the contented chirping of a dawn bird. For the Cheyenne "Victory Song" and the Dakota/Lakota melody "The Great Mystery Hears Me" Nakai uses more sustained notes than usual, and the clear, piercing tone of his flute illuminates the heart like a ray of midday sunshine. --j. poet

This collection of solo flute pieces from Navajo-Ute musician R. Carlos Nakai is an evocative delight. The album consists of mostly original material, from the composition "Canyon Reverie," to the improvisational "In Media Res," to "Athabascan Song," an arrangement of a traditional song. The latter in particular stands out, with a faster rhythm and more lilting melody than most of the other pieces. There's also "Ancient Dreams," performed on a bone whistle; the instrument almost exceeds the upper range of human hearing, and Nakai occasionally sounds like he's imitating birdcalls. A classically trained musician, Nakai blends musical traditions to create a whole that reminds one, on occasion, of Japanese shakuhachi music. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Flute-tastic........2005-11-09

This is an album I got once after a trip to New Mexico, and obviously every time I hear it I'm transported right back to Santa Fe, on a cool night with the smell of mesquite in the air. I'm no expert, but his native american flute is so wonderful and peaceful, and sounds just as I'd expect and want it to. The music is quite relaxing and great to daydream to, and I'll assume "Earth Spirit" is in many a massage parlor. Highly recommended.

With Inner Voices, R. Carlos Nakai revisits some familiar ground with new renditions of previously recorded material. Here the Native American flautist-composer's deeply resonant tones are countered and buoyed by Billy Williams's gently majestic arrangements consisting of violin, viola, cello, and bass. The title cut comes from 1998's Mythic Dreamer yet here takes on a more classic feel. The orchestra employs restrained and thoughtful strings, which in turn echo the melody line, play opposite Nakai for a grounded effect, and embolden the composition with gorgeously understated flourishes such as a low cello rumble or a slightly dissonant violin fill. On other standouts such as "12/20/82 Song" and "Winter Solstice," both on Changes, the artist's debut recording, Nakai's cedar flute beckons a return to balance, growth, and healing. The traditional hymn "Amazing Grace," having earlier appeared on Emergence, here becomes an aural blessing, as Williams's sweeping arrangements recall America's great Western plains and Nakai's melody floats above as an eagle on strong wind. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-03-18

I absolutely love this album! Great job Carlos and ensemble! The album is full of relaxing sounds and emotion evoking melodies. It just gets ya, right there *patting heart*. I recommended it to all my friends and family. It is the best harmony of smooth native american flute and sweet strings I have ever heard. It's great for a massage or winding down from a long day. I often let it play me to sleep. It gives me mental pictures of the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and Lake Tahoe. If you liked music from the motion picture "Legends of the Fall," you will love this! It's the best CD I've bought in quite some time. AMAZING!

5 out of 5 stars NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE FOR MODERN MUSIC.......2004-02-14

R. Carlos Nakai, the preeminent Native American flutist, offers traditional music performed on Native American flute and the result is nothing short of spectacular. And you thought Amazing Grace was a classic only when performed on bagpipe? Nakai will change your mind with his rendition of the classic.

For the listener who isn't quite ready for more traditional Native American flute music, INNER VOICES will become a favorite among your other easy listening CD's.

THE HORSEMAN

5 out of 5 stars YOUR FIRST NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE ALBUM.......2003-09-05

Native American flute is a medium that, I have found, is either loved or hated. Proponents love the mellow woody voice of the flute and it nostalgic appeal. But I have found that those with whom I have shared my classic Nakai renditions and who don't find Native American flute appealing complain that there is no "accompaniment" in the form of strings and other conventional instruments. Frankly I love the sound of the flute for its own sake but recognize that we are acclimated to a more predictable musical presentation.

Inner Voices is the perfect compromise for those who want to enjoy Native American flute in a more conventional musical presentation. It is the perfect initial Native American flute album purchase. This album is wonderful! I find it the perfect companion for a placid meditation or for the drive home to wind down from a stressful day.

Once you make Inner Voices a part of your collection you will likely be ready for one of Nakai's many other beautiful recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting melodies.......2003-04-27

This recording always sends me into a different - and higher - state of mind. Only one selection was familiar - Amazing Grace - which doesn't seem to fit - yet does, as it is as deeply spiritual as the Nakai original compositions. A sublime, almost hypnotic, experience.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful!.......2002-07-13

I discovered this CD at the library, and halfway through listening to it, decided I had to order it for myself. What all the other reviewers said is true... I can only add that it is hauntingly beautiful, and gives one a definite sense of calmness and inner peace. We have been blessed!

5 out of 5 stars If I could give it 6 stars I would.......2007-03-04

I wasn't even on the Amazon.com website tonight, but after listening to this CD for about the 500th time in the last 5 years (sometimes I play it all day long in my massage therapy room) I was moved to get on this site and rate this CD. This, as well as "Through Windows and Walls" are my all time favorite CD's. That says a lot as I have literally 1000's of CD's. Nothing can touch my soul and put me in a serene place like these two CD's. 9 out of 10 clients have asked me the name of these 2 CD's and have gone out and purchased them themselves. It's the musical version of what profound beauty looks like. I can't decide which of the two I like better. Buy both. You won't be sorry. Unless of course you're looking to rock out. Then forget it.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not as good as some of his other work........2005-09-20

This CD may be perfect for a slooow meditation, however I enjoy his other CD's more that have some life to them.

5 out of 5 stars sacred holy.......2005-08-26

If I could only have 1 cd this would be it. Now if I could have 2 cds this one and Santana Shaman would take care of all my needs. I have felt that way for years. I finally had to get a new one, as it was worn out. IF you use music to create holy time, and love piano, cello or native american flute. This will probably rock your boat. These gentleman have in my opinion connected with that holy energy of life. What a gift. I want to say thank you to them.

5 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful.......2003-10-20

I love the adagios, specially the piano pieces by Peter Kater. Hauntingly beautiful. I tend to listen to them at night. I call them soulful music. The ones with vocals are wonderful too. Uplifting. Inspiring even.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome but reject the shamanism.......2003-10-16

I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from.

The Native American flute is not inherently versatile and R. Carlos Nakai, the Yo-Yo Ma of this instrument, knows it. That's why he's always looking for novel settings that range from Japanese ensembles to acoustic piano to global music groups. So to stand there naked with an instrument that has a one octave range takes a depth of resources that are both technical and spiritual. Nakai has both and he deploys them across this gently searing album of solo native flute works. Engineer Jack Miller gives Nakai just the right amount of reverb and delay to sheath his flute in an echoing glow without burying it in gimmick. It's like you would imagine a flute melody cast into a canyon to sound, only better. Serene, meditative, soothing; these are all easy adjectives for a CD that will become a staple of shiatsu massage parlors and yoga studios. But Nakai goes deeper than that, calling up the spirit of the desert southwest with every breath he exhales into his vibrato-tinged melodies. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Let your soul soar.......2005-11-26

I truly enjoy Mr. Nakai's music. It seems to be the perfect background for spending time with myself. I like the uncluttered solo performance; it allows me to focus on Mr. Nakai's talent and flute-playing skill. "Sanctuary" carries me away. In combination with the nature that surrounds my home it lets my soal soar.

3 out of 5 stars Good flute music, not authentic American Indian music.......2005-05-11

My brother bought a copy of this CD and loaned it to me so I could listen to it. I'd always thought Mr. Nakai's music combined the native american flute with synthesizers, guitars and other non-Indian instruments, but this one is all flute. I thought it was actually pretty good, some of it even great (#5 Coyote Moon might be one of the better ones)although I found the reverberation effect to be distracting, echo like. The selection I found most fault with was #12 Cimarron Sunset. I first played it on my Gateway PC and thought there was no sound for most of the selection (I had the sound turned up pretty high at that), I had to put it in my old Sony Discman to hear what I'd guess to be a flute version of insect/ animal sounds at sunset- you'll need a better CD player than I have for that one.
I may have to rethink my impressions of Mr. Nakai's music (many of his CD's are flute only) and get some of them, including this one.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken soup for the soul.......2005-04-15

A few years ago, I happened upon a Native American Flute Cd. I would have never considered it, however something about it, called to me.. deep. Now, I know what your thinking, new age nut, But wait! I am an EMT, Yes, I am an "earth religion" person. But this transends any cultural bounds. I have meet a few people who dont like this music. But if you get the chance give it a listen! When I hear it, It free's the very soul, you feel "happy" almost urphoric. Its hard to explaine, but I can tell you in a busy world with way too much stress, you owe it to yourself to stop and listen to the finner things. Never mind what others say or think. Trust me you will be hooked by the mystical journy this CD takes you upon. You will be introduced to things I swear you may have seen thousands of times, yet never saw. Its lovely, there are no words to describe the tallent I see here in this CD and others like it. Native American Flute music is the most lovely thing I have had the HONOR to listen to.
And funny of all, I am born to British Parrents. But I pleed with you if your considering this.. GO FOR IT. Dont think twice.
This is lovely... more lovely and real tribute to the old ways.
Any questions... feel free to email me Tru_wagner@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars Familiar, haunting, and very highly recommended.......2004-06-07

The traditional Carlos Nakai flute playing in Sanctuary takes two forms: pieces rendered on the bass cedar flute, and those presented on the standard flute. Either way, Nakai's classic sounds, flawless performances, and nature-oriented inspirations remain familiar, haunting, and very highly recommended presentations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Philip Glass, good stuff.......2007-05-14

While I like a lot of Philip Glass works, not everything quite comes up to standard. This CD however, is excellent, a wide variety of works and sounds, good performances, and very nice to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars One excellent concerto and one good concerto.......2007-02-09

When I purchased this disc, I didn't go in with very high expectations. The majority of Glass's music lately hasn't been all that terrific, though it seems to be back on the rise again. That being said, the Piano Concerto No. 2 is an exquisite work and the Harpsichord Concerto is, at least, a delight.

The first movement of the piano concerto presents those very very familiar arpeggios but with a twist. Its a very exciting piece and, despite its slight unoriginality, very enjoyable. The second movement offers a stunning theme for a rather wretched instrument that almost destroys the entire piece. If you can ignore the Native American flute, you will definitely be pleasantly suprised by the sounds and sheer beauty of the themes that come later in the movement- they're not terribly Glass-like. The final movement is definitely one of the composer's finest works. Though again, not terribly original, the final theme for piano evokes the best memories of Brahms and Rachmaninoff, and that's no sarcasm. Just wait until the last three minutes and you'll see what I mean. Very stunning and almost challenging for the performer.

The Harpsichord concerto, while good, has only one fine movement to offer, and that's the second movement. The first two movements are nice, but nothing too great. However the second movement is a lovely, very pleasant piece. He forgoes his usual morbid tendencies and presents a very peaceful, loving piece that you won't soon forget.

I highly recommend this disc for anyone, Glass fans or otherwise.

1 out of 5 stars the descent into self-parody is complete..........2006-12-22

The outer movements of Glass's "Lewis and Clark" Piano Concerto are merely bland and barely distinguishable from those of his "Tirol" Concerto, but it's the central "Sacagawea" movement that would almost be hilarious if it weren't meant to be taken seriously. R. Carlos Nakai has the unenviable job of noodling around on a Native American flute made to sound like an out-of-tune recorder playing Glass's unidiomatic and inane little ditties in a shameless attempt at P.C. multiculturalism that falls flat on its face. The descent into self-parody is complete with the Harpsichord Concerto, a ridiculous trifle of a piece possibly indicating that Philip Glass will crank out a concerto for anyone willing to pay for one. Coming soon: the Bongo Concerto?

5 out of 5 stars Two outstanding keyboard concertos.......2006-12-22

Here we have the second volume of Orange Mountain's Philip Glass (b. 1937) "Concerto Project." If you missed the first volume of this series, featuring the Cello Concerto and the Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra, you missed some outstanding music. Although I slightly prefer the two concertos on that volume, the second piano concerto and harpsichord concerto presented on this release are fantastic as well.

The second piano concerto is subtitled "After Lewis and Clark" - so called as it was commissioned for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial in 2004. I think the subject matter will only be apparent to most listeners in the second movement, which takes a form of a duet (with string accompaniment) between the piano and a Native American flute. Anyone who enjoys the energetic, yet hypnotic, qualities of Glass' work will definitely enjoy the first movement of the piano concerto with its irregular rhythmic patterns and intriguing harmonic shifts. The concerto's above mentioned central movement strikes me as a bit strange, and the timbre of the Native American flute is not always to my liking; however its inclusion ensures that Glass joins the ranks with Khachaturian of composers whose piano concertos contain bizarre second movement additions (Khachaturian included a flexatone). Things return to normal in the third movement, which begins with Glass' immediately recognizable do-da-do-da-do-da pattern. If you are not quite sure what I am talking about, listen to the song sample for the third track and you will know what I mean. Although the opening of the finale is serene in nature, the movement gradually picks up steam as arpeggiations and other instrumentalists are weaved into the texture. This movement is also notable for the incorporation of some lovely melodic fragments towards the end.

Similar to the first volume of this "project" the second concerto included on the release serves to contrast the first. The piano concerto, despite its constant soloist figurations, strikes me a mellow and reflective work. The harpsichord concerto (composed in 2002), in contrast, is mostly extraverted and is often playful. The more I listen to the first movement of this concerto, the more I love it. In this movement, the energetic harpsichord part, full of trills, intriguing filigrees and arpeggios (of course!) is contrasted against a descending harmonic motif that, despite its wistfulness, is totally endearing. The second and third movements (and I feel somewhat the same about the piano concerto) are somewhat eclipsed by the first movement, although both movements are still quite enjoyable. The second movement marked by a lovely melody and includes several charming woodwind passages. The lighthearted finale is filled with Glass' characteristic syncopations and forward momentum, although the ending strikes me as a bit sudden and leaves me wanting something more.

When describing these concertos, I think it is important to mention that neither solo part appears to be exceedingly difficult. Both parts are chocked full of "busy" figurations, but there is seldom a section that sounds tremendously tricky. In fact, the harpsichord soloist indicated she learned the part in a few days. The nature of the solo parts did not bother me, as the music was continuously interesting. But if you are looking for a virtuosic tour de force, you might be somewhat disappointed with this release.

In conclusion, Glass fans need not hesitate in purchasing this fantastic disc. If you have not acquired the first volume featuring the cello concerto and the concerto fantasy, be sure to grab that one is well. If you happen to new to the music of Glass, the concerto project series would make an excellent introduction.

Highly Recommended!

TT: 58:55

As a brief side note, if you acquired this disc and liked the second piano concerto you may also like Glass' score to "The Hours" which has a similar style. If you liked the harpsichord concerto and are curious about other such works composed in the "modern" era, I would look into acquiring a copy of Martinu's interesting harpsichord concerto.

5 out of 5 stars NY Times Review "Philip Glass Casts New Spells, Including One for Children" 11/27/06 .......2006-11-28

BOUTIQUE labels run by composers and performers are supposed to be the hot new thing, but Philip Glass took charge of his own recordings in the early 1970s, when he began releasing his ensemble's performances on his own Chatham Square label. Mr. Glass has always been savvy about sound: his audio engineer, Kurt Munkacsi, has been a member of the Philip Glass Ensemble since the early days. Both Mr. Glass and Mr. Munkacsi have overseen most of Mr. Glass's recordings, even those released by other labels. And they have usually maintained control of the master tapes.

Not long ago, Mr. Munkacsi set out to archive Mr. Glass's tape library, which includes not only the studio masters but stacks of concert recordings as well. And the archiving project led to the next logical step: Orange Mountain Music, a label through which Mr. Glass could release new recordings and reissue old ones, as well as lending his spotlight to composers and ensembles he admires, as he did on Point Music, his boutique label for Universal. Lately, the Glass factory has been spinning out recordings every few weeks, both on CD and in compilations available only through iTunes.

The gem in the most recent batch is "The Witches of Venice," a zesty children's opera-ballet, set to a libretto by Beni Montresor and packaged in a CD-size hardcover book. The piece is about a boy who was born from a magic flower and lived with the king and queen of Venice before flying off on a wooden pigeon to rescue a girl of similar provenance from a group of witches.

The work has slipped under the radar of much of Mr. Glass's adult audience, and it is surprising and uncharacteristic. Its 24 movements are brief, and Mr. Glass's energetically rhythmic, repetitive thumbprints are everywhere; but so are sound effects that point up the magical aspects of the story, and stretches of dramatic, colorful scoring that is not immediately identifiable as Mr. Glass's. Who would have thought, back in the days of "Einstein on the Beach," with its embrace of nonnarrative theater, that Mr. Glass would someday offer vivid musical portraits of witches, fairies, ogres and a magical Plant-Boy?

Many of Mr. Glass's works are about discovery, sometimes spiritual ("Akhnaten") or scientific ("The Light") but often geographical, with social underpinnings. In "The Voyage" (two CDs), written for the Metropolitan Opera in 1992, the subject is Columbus, with a parallel plot about space travelers crashing on Earth. Where "The Witches of Venice" paints pictures with music, "The Voyage," like many of Mr. Glass's full-scale operas, is a grandly ritualistic spectacle in which staging is a crucial element, with the music often simply chugging along in support.

The ideal format for many of these works is DVD. Still, Dennis Russell Davies, leading the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and soloists and chorus from the Landestheater Linz, draws a solid, sometimes weighty reading that captures the monumental qualities one heard in the Met production.

"The Concerto Project, Volume 2" includes another installment in the discovery series, the Piano Concerto No. 2, "After Lewis and Clark." This 2004 score is built on an odd hybrid of Mr. Glass's ostinatos, Lisztian thunder (supplied with deft fluidity by Paul Barnes, the pianist) and an evocation of American Indian music. Some of the Indian themes have the feel of 19th-century salon music, but they work best in an attractive central movement dominated by R. Carlos Nakai's wooden flute.

The companion work is the Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra (2001), a Baroque-gone-haywire score in which 18th-century figurations and ornaments morph into (and sometimes escape) Mr. Glass's signature repeating cells. Jillon Stoppels Dupree, the harpsichordist, does a superb job of moving between the two worlds. (Ralf Gothoni conducts the Northwest Chamber Orchestra in both works.)

Also not to be missed is "Analog," which includes a vividly remixed version of "North Star" (1977), one of Mr. Glass's early Virgin recordings. Unlike most of his works of the time, this film score is built of short works that develop comparatively quickly. Joining it here are "Dressed Like an Egg" (1977) and an organ solo, "Mad Rush" (1980), previously available only in a limited edition given away as a subscription bonus for the long-defunct SoHo Weekly News.

Amazon.com essential recording

Emergence is one of R. Carlos Nakai's most emotive CDs, exploring traditional melodies and prayers of Northern and Central Plains Native Americans while waxing improv on everything from desert winds to willow trees and red-tailed hawks. The result is a sweet, expressive, and grounding music dedicated to the songs and stories of Nakai's tribal ancestors. This longtime master owns a natural gift for singing with the cedar flute, and this becomes delightfully apparent after hearing the fresh and light "Whirlwinds Dancing" and "Coyote Rainbows." Nakai devotes the last third of the album to South American Diné creation and emergence stories and his original, "Willow People"--with its echoing notes and touch of ambient synthesizer--begins to sing with cosmic tones, reflecting the landscape of the Din&ecute; songs. What follows are four lovely pieces of expansive Native American music, some of which include Nakai's deep, godly voice floating over a timeless universe, before ending on a quiet, melancholy rendition of "Amazing Grace." With each song, Emergence emerges into a masterpiece. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE IN ITS PURITY.......2005-09-25

R. Carlos Nakai is known as the preeminent virtuoso of the Native American Flute. There is good reason for this. No one does it better and no one sticks to the classical traditions surrounding this instrument than Nakai.

EMERGENCE is yet another testament of Nakai's devotion to his craft. Each track provides a soulful expression of the natural foundation for the flute's expression. No strange, New Age audiotechnics here. Nothing but the music and its ability to thrill the listener to the very center.

EMERGENCE, with solid performances like DREAMER'S CHANT, COYOTE RAINBOWS, WILLOW PEOPLE and AMAZING GRACE (just to name a few), is a masterful presentation of tone poetry that will soothe and inspire.

5 out of 5 stars Music Medicine.......2003-10-01

This album is excellent! If you are in need of the healing tones that the cedar flute can offer when played well, this is the gift for you. It is not a synthetic New Age mix, the kind of thing that leaves many Native Americans running for the nearest exit, it is an honestly composed and performed album. R. Carlos Nakai is the foremost and perhaps most accomplished of Native flute players being recorded today. This collection of contemporary and traditional compositions has given me many hours of solace and serenity in an otherwise wild and wooly world. We are fortunate to have this talented Ute/Dineh musician amoung us recording these offerings today!

5 out of 5 stars Stirring and Thought Provoking.......2001-02-17

Nakai produces a romantic, healing, while vaguely haunting music that gently transports you back to a time when music was more than just entertainment. Nakai emulates the traditional music of his Navajo-Ute in a way that is both touching and mystic. Be prepared to be taken on a journey where you will be introduced to the feelings an impressions that Nakai himself experiences. He will show you through his music what the world around his means to him, and he will instill that awe of life in you.

Nakai doesn't fall into the trap of giving the musical tourist exactly what he expects. There is no chanting or jingling bells, no corny sound effects or war cries. Instead he simply taps into that inner peace that we all look for. Perhaps that's the reason so many people have come to appreciate his music. The universal understanding of, and need for, peace and insight.

5 out of 5 stars Great for classroom use!.......2005-07-25

The calming, peaceful sounds of the Native American flute are perfect for use in the classroom! My high school students don't know what to think of it at first, but after a while, they begin to develop an appreciation for it. The soothing music helps them relax and focus their minds. I have several Nakai CDs and I play a different one everyday. This CD is an excellent addition to my collection!

5 out of 5 stars THE ESSENCE OF DREAMS.......2002-04-28

By far, Nakai's best recording. This is the most haunting and beautiful CD I own. Wonderful for meditation, painting, relaxing, or drifting off to sleep. What dreams this man conjures. This far surpasses anything in the often incoherent genre of New Age Music and should not be classified as such. Nakai is in a realm all his own.

On the rare occasion this CD leaves the player beside my bed, it's usually in the player in my painting studio.

This is by far one of my favorites CDs. Carlos Nakai and William Eaton blend so well together on Native American flute and guitar - both are masters of their instruments. It's mellow enough for meditation but interesting enough to listen to with earphones and get into the flow, the rhythm and the harmonies of the music. The only problem I have with this CD is - my dog reacts to the flute playing - gets "a little freaked out" so I can't play it around her. She might think it's the coyotes that we sometimes hear around here in central NC. Anyhow, this is one CD that I could never get tired of listening to.

Album Description

Desert Dance is R. Carlos Nakai's musical interpretation of his experiences in the sacred place of his ancestors, Colorado's San Luis Valley. Like his critically acclaimed 1988 release, Sundance Season, the Navajo-Ute musician's latest album was recorded in the Lindisfarne chapel, a uniquely resonant structure situated within this dramatic expanse of holy ground. Many tribes, from the early pueblo dwellers to the Kiowa, Arapaho, and Comanche, have inhabited this alpine valley over time. Near Alamosa, Colorado, where the Great Sand Dunes lie, is the site of the Navajo's eastern sacred mountain, Blanca Peak, and the center of the Ute world. Nakai weaves his improvisations on the native American wooden flute, nose flute, drums, rattle, and voice into poetic meditations on the land and its history. During Ancient Voices, he delicately plays a Southern Plains war dance drum with finger taps and brushes to reveal a hidden palette of sound, much like the whisper of spirits within the valley. The joyful spectacle of desert birds frolicking upon waves of transparent air currents is depicted on Turquoise Swallows Dance, while the wind's daily moods are choreographed in temperate summer breezes, dust devils, and cloud formations on Wind Dance. Other selections deftly combine the plaintive, yet, potent sounds of Nakai's heritage to explore the mystery and unique beauty of this sacred territory.
