Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
The danzon, an elegant, stately mix of European and indigenous elements, is one of the quintessential Cuban music styles. Cuban maestro Frank Emilio Flynn, 77, became popular in the 1930s in Cuba as a pianist and leader of a danzon orchestra and in A tiempo de Danzon revisits some of the classics of the genre including "Las Alturas de Simpson," generally considered the first danzon. The supporting ensemble here is serviceable rather than inspiring but Flynn holds the music together with his crisp, unsentimental touch and economic style. This is music at once delicate and earthy, courtly and streetwise and Flynn time and again finds the exact balance with authority and unfailing grace. --Fernando Gonzalez

5 out of 5 stars Fantastico, puro and to the heart............2006-01-23

As a Cuban, I grew up listening to Danzon. In the United States Danzon is not well known outside the exile community, because Americans lump most Cuban music together with its variant "la Salsa". But, if you want to know real Cuban music you should get to know Danzon (which is miles away from Salsa!). Along with the Argentine Tango, Cuban Danzon is the classiest most romantic dance music in the Hemisphere. The romantic sensuality of the Danzon interpreted by Frank Emilio Flynn, a great Cuban musician, will blow you away.

5 out of 5 stars The Danzon Is Fun........2000-08-31

One would think that a CD containing just one style of Cuban music (Danzon) would turn boring after a couple of cuts. Wrong! This is a fantastic CD. Frank Emilio keeps the general flow of the record vivid and fresh; you won't even notice that all of the cuts are danzones.

This is an instrumental CD. . . of great music playing not only by the headliner but by the accompanying musicians.
