Jewel's debut album, Pieces of You, reveals a special voice--strong and focused on both the whispery verses and the hooky choruses. The recording also exposes an unfortunate tendency to present trite, hackneyed sentiments as if they were oracular visions from a young prophet to a jaded world. For the most part, Jewel sings to her own acoustic guitar accompaniment, but she has a lot more in common with, say, the Indigo Girls or Lisa Loeb than with Judy Collins or Nanci Griffith. Despite her soft soprano and pretty melodies, her songs have an iconoclastic edge which make her more of an unplugged alternative rocker than a folkie. Her songs too often betray their origins as written verse in their hard-to-sing meters, unmusical phrasing, and diary-like pronouncements. Nonetheless, a few numbers, such as "Morning Song" and "You Were Meant for Me," show a spark of humor about romance, and hint that Jewel may yet write songs worthy of her remarkable voice. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars PIECES OF JEWEL.......2007-06-23

Dynamic and lush production and Jewel's soul-deep enriched vocals, (she can go deep into a bass register, and high into soprano, and yodels like she just came down from the mountaintop), make "Pieces of You", her debut Grammy-winning album of 1995, a stunner of an album. Since then, she has yet to capitalize on a successful career, flittering in and out of the popular charts without the impact and artistic success of this album, which combines at least three outstanding tracks, ("Who Will Save Your Soul?", "You Were Meant For Me", and "Foolish Games"), with school-girl poetics on bigotry and homophobia, which are presented as naive and honest as a first training bra. Her in-your-face sweet righteousness is enough to make you cringe at the dopey sincerity, ("Jew ... Do you hate him because he's pieces of you?"). She possesses a genuine folksy charm which can roar like an urban lion as she reaches soulful masculine tinged registers in her gorgeous voice; "Who will save your soul', she pleads so deeply, 'when you won't save your own?", in outstanding opening track, "Who Will Save Your Soul?". "Pieces Of You" is pieces of Jewel, an emotionally fragile and solid songwriter wrapped in string enriched orchestration, guitar strumming folk, live acoustic, and mind settling balladry. The years have been kind to this album. I like it today more than yesterday, when it was merely an album with a few good tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-18

Jewel's voice and simple songs portray a beautiful innocence. This is and always will be one of my favorite albums.
The only track I sometimes skip over is Adrian but the others make up for it.

The Sandman©
It may be hackneyed, as the formally educated Mr. Geoffrey Himes infers, but unadulterated emotions coming from an innocence void of "Sophisticated Structure" can be as or more effective in touching a commonality we've all felt but failed to express and left buried deep within, far below the surface where they can not do the most good. Music, poetry, art of any kind is about emotional expression (bringing it out in the open; to uncover, liberate, enjoy, and heal) - if one puts a formula to it, a certain spontaneity is lost. Who cares if it fits into an exact genre. "Listen" to the "Magic" of the content, free yourself to the "Moment", of what it is, not what it isn't. Her "Unmusical Phrasing" coerces one to disallow conventional patterns of thought; break out of vernacular entrapment, exonerate that iconoclast spirit we all harbor in secret, but fear wearing less judgment befalls with a vengeance. If you're dissatisfied, write your own. Mr. Himes critique is more hackneyed then Jewell's lyrics. There are computer programs that can "Formula Critique" what he wrote. Try to touch others with pure emotion as she does; it's not as easy as it looks. There's no subject under the sun that hasn't been written about in some way. It's "Variation" of interpretation that provides a new way at looking at archaic "Oracular Obsolescence", and that interpretation is personal and unique. What Jewell does is a total package. Remove one aspect and the flavor changes, the impulsive magic is lost. Listen to the innocence of a child if you crave a method to our madness. They can tell you ALL you need to know, never having attended your institutions of higher learning, jaded with intellectual "Vocabulary"...

Maybe that garbage can Jewell was rummaging through for a discarded Pizza crust was in your back yard? Trade places with her. Discover the disparate emotions you'll experience when your lofty level of intellectual needs is replaced with a primary survival skill. You'll discover a level of learning you had no idea could exist. Jewell was right. You hit bottom at the top. Maybe it's a question of perspective? She possesses an uncanny ability of "Phrase". It's a gift. You can't acquire it. Like charisma, You either have it or you don't.

Jewell's mortar flows with a melded elixir fit for a child's delighted squeal seeing a frog jump into a pond, disappearing below the surface; a wanderer seeking the comfort of falling asleep to the melodic snore of a road dusty hobo; enigmatic curiosity of finding her place in the intricate balance of desire and need; tempered with a pestle of discovery that only a misstep now and again, will allude clarification.

If I had Jewell's talent... I'd gladly shoulder the critics lack of the same. But like they, all I can do is listen, wish, and lament...

4 out of 5 stars a revelation.......2007-02-10

Jewel's debut album struck a chord for the sheer non-ordinary quality of her voice. Even if the lyrics sometimes seem a bit overwrought and over-wise, the sound is convincing, especially when taken from a young artist just making her breakout.

I can still remember where I was when I first hear 'Foolish Games' (Hwy 101 northbound between Santa Rosa and San Francisco). It still rates as one of Jewel's finest ballads. I bought the CD that very day.

This was a voice that arguably sprang straight from the small club to the recording studio, with the lingering aroma of its former venue still clinging to it. The spare orchestration lends itself to this conclusion as does the occasional live recording in the CD. Jewel has since grown beyond this, a good thing on balance but not without its residual regrets.

Jewel has gone on to bigger things. It is difficult to include that they've been better than this debut, which in its moment was a revelation.

5 out of 5 stars promising.......2007-02-08

Not her best, some pieces are just plain excruciating, like the horrendously long soap opera piece entitled 'adrian,' but others are really enjoyable. Thankfully, Jewel has developed her strong points and left most of her less endearing naivite by the way.

The word "confessional" is frequently applied to folk of all stripes, including folk-rock and folk-pop, which is where Jewel comes in. Even within the bounds of folk, however, her music is more nakedly confessional than most. (Too nakedly, some have carped.) Along with a coterie of Nashville pros, she began her latest musical journey by laying down another introspective song cycle in the vein of 1995's Pieces of You. Dissatisfied with the results, the Texas-based artist scrapped that effort and re-recorded with Rob Cavallo (Green Day). This lends her sixth album the expected rock edge, but Jewel hasn't changed her spots. If anything, she sounds more like, well, Jewel than she did on dance-oriented departure 0304. She's still pop star ("Fragile Heart"), sensitive folkie ("Long Slow Slide"), and scrappy country gal ("Stephenville, TX"). Her Joni Mitchell-esque soprano soars as high as ever, with more of a sardonic Dylan chaser than before. What's changed is that maturity has granted Jewel, now in her early 30s, greater perspective--"Growing up is not an absence of dreaming," she states in the title track--and a sense of humor missing from her more earnest early work. On "Satellite," for instance, written when she was 18, but revamped since, she notes that "the Pope," "rock and roll," "Valium," even "Miss Cleo" can't fix her broken heart. In her statement about the album, Jewel claims that, after years of ups and downs, she's "not broken, just more myself." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Jewel is about to deliver her most personal and autobiographical record so far-Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Not content to relegate herself to a traditional music arena, or to be typecast, Jewel has established herself as a culturally significant and relevant brand. Author, songwriter, actress, poet-there are no limits to how Jewel can and will deliver her message. The underlining truth that ties it all together is the integrity of that message.

3 out of 5 stars This is ok..........2007-07-15

I LOVE Jewel but this album sure doesnt beat Spirit or Peices of you. I dunno, its hard to explain, its like the songs are a bit generic, Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is good, and so is a Good Day. I think maybe its just lacking a bit of soul, it just doesnt seem alot like the old Jewel we are all used too.

5 out of 5 stars #1 Jewel Fan.......2007-07-05

Jewel will always have a special place in my heart. I've loved her music since the day I heard "You Were Meant For Me" come on the radio. I wasn't too fond of 0304 but in Goodbye Alice in Wonderland she brings a bit more of the real Jewel back into our hearts. I really enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated.......2007-06-21

Jewel through many a curveball back in 2003 when she released 0304, which took her trademark confessional lyrics and set them against a mostly upbeat(and occasionally dance-driven)beat, much to the consternation of many of her fans. I was in the minority, as it was in my opinion her best album to that point, and follow-up GOODBYE ALICE IN WONDERLAND is on an even level of quality with that disc. Returning more to the sound of her THIS WAY album, Jewel again keeps things rather upbeat(musically) this time around, not thanks to dance backdrops but with the addition of a slightly harder rock sound, probably due to producer Rob Cavallo's hand in things. It's a good fit for the singer, who rocks out harder than ever on such tracks as "Only One Too", "Works Get In The Way", and "Drive To You". It also provides her with her most accessible set of songs to date, which is a shame considering that the album has been all but ignored since its' release--as was noted elsewhere, nearly every song here could have been a single. Too bad her record company didn't have the good sense to see that.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel the way I know and love her.......2007-04-28

I was aghast at 0304 when it seemed Jewel gave up her folk music so I was more than relieved by Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. I was like, oh thank GOOOOOOOD Jewel did another album that shows off her great songwriting and guitar talents. It was really hard to watch her video for Intuition with the back up dancers and trashy wardrobe. Jewel is beautiful just the way she always has been. Love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Still Shining.......2007-04-24

I think it strange that Jewel's latest album did not top the charts. It was certainly masterful in design and execution. And therein lies the problem. I suggest that she do another tour and record a live album with some new material. We all know how wonderful her concerts can be, and how beautifully her voice can soar underneath the stars and trees... I caught her act in Central Park, and of course ..... I just had to say yes to all of that heartfelt emotion that poured over me like a pristine waterfall - splendid Jewel!

If you're wondering how Green Day managed to become the biggest punk band in the world, take a look at Bullet in a Bible. Recorded at their June 2005 two-night run at Milton Keynes National Bowl in England, this combined CD/DVD sees these former bong-hitting Californian dropouts embracing political activism, pantomime hilarity, and all the fripperies of a rock opera--and excelling at all three.

The first half is essentially a run-through of the group's 2004 album American Idiot, complete with anti-American rabble-rousing and a set of barbed insults tossed back at the "rednecks" across the pond. That out of the way, the band careen into a sort of greatest-hits set, with the likes of "Longview" and "Hitchin' a Ride" sharing space with a brass-laden "King for a Day" that sees Billie Joe Armstrong prancing around the stage in crown and ermine cape, singing snatches of Lulu's "Shout" and Eric Idle's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." Tremendously silly, but Green Day have managed to figure out how to play it like showmen without resorting to juvenile puerility or morphing into corporate yes-men, and that's a way harder trick than it looks. --Louis Pattison

Album Description

Featuring Green Day's first live DVD, the CD + DVD Bullet in a Bible captures the explosive band on the biggest tour in its career, in support of the Grammy-winning, quadruple-platinum, #1 charting American Idiot punk-rock epic. From two performances filmed in June 2005 before 65,000 fans, both in Milton Keynes in England, to the DVD's documentary segments following the band members around that city as they visit a war museum and various pubs, and share in-depth insights on the making and meaning of American Idiot, Green Day is #1 with a Bullet in a Bible. DVD: Video of the performance with documentary behind-the-scenes footage

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Electrifying.......2007-07-02

On the 'Bullet in a Bible' DVD, Billie Joe Armstrong says that some bands worry about how they would create intimacy in front of a crowd of 65,000, but said that for Green Day it was irrelevant as they weren't trying to create intimacy, they were trying to create an event. Ultimately that's what 'Bullet in a Bible' is, an event, a fantastic spectacle.

The band open with a spine tingling version of their newer hits with 'American Idiot' and 'Holiday' leading the line. They also show how well 'Jesus of Suburbia' works when performed live. After these songs, Green Day bring their newer, more uninitiated fans through some of the earlier Green Day catalogue, with quality performances of, among other songs, 'Longview', 'Basket Case' and 'Minority'. These performances should give an electrified jolt to all Green Day fans, new and old.

During the encore, Billy Joe brings the only moment of the before eschewed intimacy to the concert, with his closing rendition of 'Good Riddance'. This brings a beautiful close to another fantastic show by the boys from California.

5 out of 5 stars best band ever.......2007-05-07

very good cd. st. jimmy is my far the best song on it and it has a good video.

5 out of 5 stars This one converted me.......2007-04-13

I love lots of different rock music, but I had never been sold on Green Day. Something about their music, and especially the production of their sound on their studio albums, did not appeal to me. This DVD/Cd combo changed my mind and got me listening to some songs over and over again. It has a frenetic energy that I didn't find in their studio work. I don't much like the unnecessary cussing, but I can overlook it when the songs are this good. I find it amusing to see a punk band use so many pretty vocal harmonies. Songs I couldn't bear to listen to on the albums suddenly were quite good here in concert, such as 'Basket Case' and 'Brain Stew'. Most of the stuff from 'American Idiot' is great here also.

5 out of 5 stars Energizing performance, great rock/punk music.......2007-03-14

For someone who grew up with rock music, was a child in the 60s, a teen and young adult in the 70s, and witnessed the early stages of punk, also in the 70s, this album/DVD came as something of a revelation. Although I've been more or less out of the loop in terms of both rock and punk for some years, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this disc--a "greatest hits" compilation leaning heavily on the "American Idiot" album--and watching the concert DVD. The songs belong to my daughter's generation, but geriatric as I am, I think the music is excellent, and the lyrics pretty intelligent, sometimes even searing. The DVD is fun to watch, too; the frenetic editing and choppy visuals don't really bother me.

I gather that some of the concert was cut from both disc and and film, but what is presented is very fine. The band, with two back up musicians, launch themselves into the American Idiot rock opera with a vengeance (complete with political commentary), and some older, vintage Green Day songs, like "Basket Case," and the mega-hit "Good Riddance," to the immense enthusiasm of the huge Brit crowd at the Milton Keynes National Bowl. Selections highlight the versatility of the group, which can belt out punk lyrics of anger and alienation, hard-hitting rock numbers, or melancholy ballads like "Wake Me Up When September Ends," without missing a beat. All three musicians seem powered up and at the top of their game, and Billie Joe Armstrong, an energizer bunny if there ever was one, keeps the energy level high from start to finish with his remarkable voice (a flexible tenor with an occasional, pleasing quaver) and onstage antics.

To add to all of this, the members of Green Day--baby faced, green eyed Billie Joe, the lean, intense Mike Dirnt, affable Tre Cool with his inimitable clowning--have an undeniable visual appeal than comes across well in the concert DVD, as it has in their videos (viewable on the Green Day website).

5 out of 5 stars Truth.......2007-02-12

Green Day is the largest band in the world right now,
the only bad to make the punk rock opera that stormed
the world over. people critisize them because they are jealous.
They are better and more talented them "Mee-tall-ica" and
rap "hustlers" "iz u with ma" (makes no sense) and they're angry
cuz they're going strong 18 years now and they are capable of real music.
hats to those who had good feedback for this incredible album

Bad critics are jealous too.
But of course they'll deny it like
all cowards in this world.

It's time for an update of our image of Jewel, the ingenue who set the music world on fire with her 1995 debut album, Pieces of You. After all, that effort consisted primarily of songs Jewel had written several years before, some of them dating back to her days as a free- spirited waif living in a van on the beach in San Diego. Now, at 25, she's become a sort of guru for self-expression and full disclosure, revealing perhaps too much of herself in see-through dresses worn to awards shows and a critically drubbed (yet bestselling) book of poetry. Spirit makes plain why Jewel's well-intentioned yet sometimes facile lyrics strike a chord with her audience while her poetry lies flat on the page. On songs like "Deep Water," "Hands," and "Down So Long," her words are borne aloft by sparkling melodies and her soaring voice, making even the most cynical observer take a schoolgirl-notebook image such as "your heart like grape gum on the ground" or an unreassuring platitude like "If I could tell the world just one thing / It would be that we're all OK" somewhat in stride. On Pieces of You, Jewel posed the musical question "Who will save your soul?" On Spirit, it sounds like she wants to do it herself. And the truth is, if you don't overanalyze it, the album does act as a sort of balm for wounded psyches or maybe a primer for raising your own inner child. Maybe she's right and we are all OK. Who knew? --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Great Jewel Cd.......2007-01-08

This CD delivers. Jewel makes great CDs... her first CD is the best, but this one is a close second. With tracks like Hands, Down So Long, and Deep Water, Jewel is timeless.... the first 9 tracks are the best. Great purchase.

4 out of 5 stars some rhythm in the madness.......2007-01-02

Jewel's voice is unmistakable.

It either draws one in with ineffable appeal, or puts one off in the way of people who try a little too hard.

This reviewer puts this down to the combination of fine skills and a twist of artistic narcissism that seems to penetrate the lady's art. Marshall McLuhan famously claimed that 'the medium is the message'. Jewel often seems to be forcing a message into an art form that is not exactly fitted to the effort.

Yet she sometimes breaks through to persuasiveness, even with a tune that is heavily laden with message ('Hands').

It may be that this artist with the stunning good looks and the almost eery voice will remain a musical enigma, the twin impulses she generates creating two distinct publics, one highly devoted to her every album, the other cynical and generative of nasty-minded anti-Jewel websites.

She has styled herself a kind of troubadour of the religion of tolerant niceness. This is all good, as far as it goes. Yet it inevitably wears thin when its definition of either religion, tolerance, or niceness bumps into others that it finds incomprehensible. An artist who stays to conventional themes runs little risk of this happening. But Jewel, like the dinner guest who brings up religion, politics, or sex at the dinner table, will doubtless continue to find herself called upon to articulate her convictions. That tends to make art messy, ideological, and short-lived.

Yet just when one begins to fear the worst, she ends an album with a hauntingly gorgeous love song like 'Absence of Fear', its gentle piano intro setting the stage for a humble, poignant, and yearning piece. Enigma indeed.

Let's hope Jewel's considerable gifts trump any dire artistic turn of events and that she continues to toss off the striking hit ever year or two.

5 out of 5 stars This album is beautiful.......2006-08-19

This is the first Jewel cd that I have purchased and I think I'm offically a Jewel fan. Her voice is very addictive and calming. I love that fact that her lyrics uplift humanity. This is a great album. I want to purchase the rest of her albums now.
I recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Boosts my SPIRIT........2006-08-01

I originally got this because I began to wear out "Pieces of You" and decided to hear her other works. Now I find myself listen to it everywhere I go. All of these songs have wonderful meaning, and show a bit more of what the world needs now. The best selections in my opinion include "Deep Water", "Hands" "Life Uncommon", and "Absence of Fear", which all strike an abyss deep inside that I never would have discovered otherwise. This CD is great to hear anywhere because it gives you a sense of power that you can only find in artists of this caliber. I wish her luck on this latest album "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland". Just another stepping stone towards greatness!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Thought-Provoking.......2006-06-18

I usually buy the cd of the moment and within months it is lost and forgotten in my vast collection. This cd is the exception. I was a Jewel fan from the beginning, but I believe this album is her best to date. It is one of the few that I continue to play and I have owned this album for years. In fact I am on my second disc because I wore out the original. Her lyrics have a purity to them and the melodies are very sweet and carry the lines well. My favorite track has to be "Life Uncommon." The line "No longer lend your strength to that which you wish to be free from," has stayed with me since I first heard the song. It seems so simple, yet it is rarely seen. The whole album is incredible. Now her songs are in my head, I think I'm going to have to listen to it now. Enjoy.

It's easy to see that Jewel wants to lighten up. With two previous multimillion-selling albums (and a couple of much-scorned but popular books) filled with earnest, clueless revelations behind her, the singer-songwriter comes a little closer to ground with This Way. "Give it hell 'til the end," a former compatriot urges her on "Till We Run Out of Road," her version of Jackson Browne's "The Load Out." Could that be a hard-bitten road warrior deep inside the woman who makes a point of pronouncing the O's in the opening line ("Mirror, mirror") of this CD's "Serve the Ego"? Maybe. But despite her icky streak's spread to cutesy jokes ("Jesus Loves You"), Jewel hasn't quite abandoned her old judgmental ways (in "I Won't Walk Away," she spies a couple "resisting being one") and ambitions to, you know, really say something, as in the "Desolation Row"-lite "The New Wild West." Still, with some nice, if bland, arrangements set around her, This Way is the Jewel album most likely to appeal to Jewel non-fans. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars More albums should be done "This Way".......2006-08-01

Although I just got this recently, I already notice a lot of the songs to be different than her older work, on a country note, on a romantic note, on a lighter note. She sounds like the Jewel never heard before, and I like it! It might take a while, though, as seen in the rating. So far I have only listened to this once, but I look forward to hearing from it again; I mean, why else would I get it?! My favorite song on here has to be "Till We Run Out of Road" because it reminds of those days when I had to make those transitions in life and just decided to ride one path for the longest time. Oh, it is my latest Jewel CD and I don't think I have made a bad choice at all. I may have fallen for it as much as my older ones and don'y even know it yet. This leaves a decent aftertaste in my mind after the nice food for thought I have been given, and on this album she just may have it right. Keep up the good work Jewel; I am right behind you!

4 out of 5 stars Different But Great!.......2006-05-20

Jewel is one of my favorite artists, after Tori Amos. It's strange that I like them both, because they have completely different styles of music. On her fourth release, Jewel's musical style has become much less minimalistic, with a whole band behind her for most of the songs. Kind of like what Tori Amos did with From The Choirgirl Hotel.

It's interesting how Jewel was seven years older when she made This Way than when she made Pieces of You, and yet her voice sounds much younger. Her voice sounds very childlike on this disc. Her voice also sounds like it's straining a lot more than it used to. She doesn't use her deep voice anymore-which sounds a lot better than her high one. Need I say that her voice does not improve with age?

But the songs are good. My favorite track is Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone, followed by The New Wild West and Everybody Needs Someone Sometime. Jewel may have gone country, but she's still got it.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel With A Sharper Edge.......2006-05-03

I've always enjoyed and admired Jewel as a singer/songwriter and contemporary folk artist, but this impressive album, which I still haven't tired of, has given me a new found respect for her talents and ability to continually evolve and challenge herself as an artist. For those who wrote her off as just another pretty blond singer with some thoughtful folksy tunes, this CD will make you sit up and take notice.
It definately shows a 'Jewel' with a slightly harder, sharper edge, and much more upbeat, urban sound both musically and vocally. Though she has undeniably, always been an intelligent songwriter with a knack for observing human and social foibles, these songs have a less naive, far more mature 'rock chick' feel and sound than previous tracks, whilst still maintaining the country girl freshness and natural sex appeal underneath.
With its very all American 'road trip' kind of feel (I love playing it the car), that travels from white middle class America, to 'trailer trash' and the Southern bible belt, it could almost have been written as a film soundtrack, or accompanied a documentary on tour. Exploring such topics as, religious hypocracy (Jesus Loves You), as well as social poverty and human deprivation,(Wild West), not forgeting the usual pitfalls of love and relationships (Break Me), with a detached but insightful observation that gives the album its edge and originality.
Then there are the more bittingly sarcastic sendups of the human ego and nature (Everybody Needs Someone Sometime, Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone). In fact there is barely a weak track on this Album. 'Standing Still', of a more 'Pop' genre with its catchy bridge and uplifting chorus, is a great opener and first single; 'Do You Want to Play' has a great energy and catchy hook, while 'I Won't Walk Away' is a movingly tender love song very suited to Jewel's beautiful voice. 'Serve the Ego'(a song which appears to be about a kind of ritualistic hedonism in youth culture: "..underneath the disco light everybody's feeling alright. Get on your hands and knees and praise the new deity.." she sings) is another standout track, very sensual and moody, relying on exotic rhythms more than lyrics.
'This Way' is definately a terrific assortment of tracks, borrowing from a variety of influences and inspirations that swing from country and rock to pop and folk. Not just for devoted fans, it continues to show Jewel as a quality singer/songwriter and developing music artist, with many strings to her bow.

3 out of 5 stars This way? No thanks, I prefere the other direction........2006-05-02

If poor production values and a couple of really overwritten songs plagued "pieces of you" then the honesty, earnest and heart of the performer redeemed it. Armed with a ton of promise Jewel moved to her second album and nearly found her voice but was drowned in some polarizing religious overtones. So where to next, an uncomfortable clash of folksy lyrics and pop-music that is "This Way".

Is the album disappointing to those who still hold "pieces" most dear? Yes. But it is also a weak and unbalanced effort.

The issue here with Jewel seems to be that she writes folk and country but wants to have a pop sound. It's an effort that fails here and continues through 0304 and Goodbye Alice in Wonderland.

Her finest moment, Jewel: Unplugged has never been released as an album, it's a shame, because that's who she is as an artist, everything else like this is just an imitation.

Hopefully she'll let go one day and just be Jewel again, not a Pop Dreamer.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel's Opus.......2006-04-20

Two years separated the "Spirit" and "This Way" projects. In that time Jewel took personal time to reflect on her fast rise as one of the biggest singer songwriter's of her generation, fell in love, & grew as a person. Even more importantly, Jewel began writing new material. All of these events this would take shape into what became "This Way".

Released in the latter half of 2001, "This Way" showed a slight commercial decline from her two previous LP's, but was received rather well by most critics & fans. There were those that raised their eyebrows at a more "mature" Jewel. One who wasn't afraid to flirt with different musical styles & her own sensuality.

"This Way" finds a much more wiser, yet still innocent Jewel looking at the world in a more intense fashion. This intensity is matched by the musical electicism found on this LP. The folk element which Jewel is so known for is still present. But, there are country, rock, pop, & an occasional surprise elements abounding here. Though I won't give it all away to those who haven't heard this record.

The lead single "Standing Still", inspired by Jewel's relationship with Ty (his last name still escapes me) is a gem. Jewel sings the verses with a quiet, yet building passion. This passion erupts on the chorus, that showcases Jewel's voice. "Break Me", which is far superior in it's orchestrated version here than the more whitewashed single version, is subtle & lilting.

Specific enuciation on words gives Jewel's voice a charismatic purr & even gritty context. This is best showcased on cuts such as "Love Me (Leave Me Alone)" & "Jesus Loves You". Lyrically, Jewel showed progress, but still keeps it mostly simple. Though I will shine spotlight on "Serve the Ego" which is a lyrically sparse, & almost erotic reading of social culture. This was also her first dance hit.

Musically, as stated, diversity is handled in subtle fashion. Many of the textures are very well mixed, that some may not notice (right away) that Jewel was hinting at more adventerous musical territory. Of course, "0304" would be born of this flirty musical behavior. Some may shun at Jewel's use of more "studio" technique. Ironically, I think that Jewel manages to meld the "live energy" of her first LP with the "studio experimentalism" of her second LP quite well. Two live cuts are tacked onto the end of the record, blending quite well with the pre-recorded studio tracks well.

Each track is worth a second spin, each one gets better with that spin. Jewel selected the strongest songs from the "This Way" sessions, making a record that stands in Jewel's catalogue as her most cohesive & strong. It is also my personal favorite in Jewel's whole catalogue.

Highly recommend to anyone who loves music, everyone should hear this at least once.

This is a recording of an old vinyl which was in my collection. It was good to see that it was available, on CD, just as I remembered it sounding
Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars So BAD she's GOOD .......2007-04-21

This is the most remarkable singing in all of recorded history. So BAD she's GOOD, Florence Foster Jenkins bankrolled herself into mini-stardom selling out her invitation-only once-a-year recitals until she became so legendary, she sold out Carnegie Hall to an audience snickering into their handkerchiefs. These recordings showcase that as BAD as Jenkins is, she gets WORSE . . . brilliantly so! With sensitive and serious accompaniment, Jenkins' voice is like a cross between a clucking chicken and a squeak toy played by Rusty Hinge. Each tune reveals a new vocal weakness (at best) or a deeper absurdity (at very best); these selections are a Punk miracle of self-delusion. I am grateful to all the brave reviewers who gave 5 stars 'cause they're right in its essential laughter factor; if you have a funny bone you cannot NOT laugh while listening to this lady sing!

4 out of 5 stars my ears and belly hurt.......2007-04-11

My ears hurt from this absolutely abominable performance, and my belly from laughing.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all music lovers.......2007-01-05

I first heard this album (LP) about 20 years ago on the radio. I recently recalled it and did a search on Amazon and to my amazement it and other titles were available. I purchased this disc for my wife's Christmas present 2006. We both cannot stop laughing every time we listen to it. I highly recommend this disc to anyone who loves the classics and has a hidden desire/dream that one day they too will be discovered and perform in large concert halls to utter amazement of the audience. Buy it, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Florence's voice caused my dog to shake in fear........2007-01-02

This woman's voice was so bad that my dog started to shake in fear...then he ran and hid in my parent's room. I gave my friend the cd as a Christmas present and she said it ruined her Christmas. I, on the other hand, have never laughed so hard at someone's lack of musical ability! I've never heard anyone sound so horrible! Now, I don't want to give her all the credit..because when I heard Thomas Burns sing I FELL TO THE GROUND AND LAUGHED UNTIL I CRIED! I guess that's why I am giving it 5 stars. Anything that can make me laugh until I cry is worth its weight in gold!!!

Here, a year after her sensational Metropolitan debut as Prokofiev's Natasha from War and Peace, comes the debut solo recital album of 30-something soprano Anna Netrebko. She hails from southern Russia, and her emergence from the life of a conservatory student has a touch of the Cinderella tale—the bit, that is, about being discovered by Gergiev mopping floors for the Kirov as a part-time job and making her way into the Kirov's ranks. Later she became a favorite at San Francisco Opera, trying on for size a swath of comic and dramatic roles. Opera Arias parades Netrebko's way through a spectrum of vocal styles and characters. This mesmerizing lyric soprano engages--at times thrillingly grips--the listener with an imagination far greater than the disc's title (couldn't someone have dreamt up a less ridiculously bland handle?), but most significantly leaves an impression that the enterprise here isn't merely about singing. Netrebko's Ilia and Donna Anna are flesh-and-blood characters in real situations, as Mozart wanted them to be. The results are a bit more uneven with her bel canto heroines, where the required balance between Netrebko's emotional identification, so obviously a forte, and the musical phrasing thereof is a delicate one. Her shading of Lucia's mood swings, vocal and emotional, isn't consistently compelling. On the other hand, Netrebko uncovers gemlike facets not just in Gounod's "Jewel Song" but particularly in her stunning, passionately realized and beautifully phrased Manon (even if her trills disappoint). A shame that samples of her Russian repertory are missing here, though Netrebko's "Song to the Moon" from Dvorak's Rusalka concentrates and sets a mood with enviable mastery. Netrebko's musical intelligence and theatrical savvy seem destined to ensure her a magnificent career, so it's no surprise that many fans are already clamoring for more than the tease of an aria collection. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Bright Star.......2007-07-13

If you like opera, if you like the lyric soprano, if the vocal range of the colortura causes goose bumps to rise, Anna Netrebko is a must. Roberta Peters, Beverly Sills, Anna Moffo, Joan Southerland, Maria Callas, she takes a back seat to none of them, she sits he front seat with the best of them and guess what? She is beautiful too.

5 out of 5 stars Anna Netrebko: Opera Arias.......2007-03-29

Her voice takes my breath away, I fell in love with her.
I highly reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars First DGG album--very promising.......2007-02-01

Anna Netrebko has rapidly become a first tier star in opera. This album, her first at DGG, illustrates why some rate her so highly; it also illustrates some of the questions that some have raised about her. All in all, though, a very nice CD.

A few selections illustrate:

Mozart, Idomeneo, "Quando avran fine omai." She displays a rich and clean voice. There is a very attractive quality to her voice manifest in this work.

Mozart, Don Giovanni, "Crudele? Ah no, mio bene!...Non mi dir." This is Donna Anna's poignant aria, given her circumstances. Netrebko displays rich tones. This is a well sung cut. "Non mi dir" shows off some agility in her voice.

Donizetti, Lucia di Lammermoor. "Ancor non giunse!. . .Regnava nel silenzio. . .Quando rapito in estasi" Something of a disappointment. Coloratura is not her forte (and see her "Sempre Libera" CD for further confirmation). She clearly shows off a rich and lush voice. I think that she displays some characterization here that is compelling. She hits high notes cleanly. But her ornamentation is indifferent, and she appears unable to trill. I know, some say that that is irrelevant. But compare Beverly Sills' version of this work, with almost too many trills extraordinarily well sung and her florid technique, and this version simply pales.

Bellini, La Sonnambula. "Care compagna. . .Come per me sereno." Again, Netrebko displays a rich voice. She displays an agile voice and the ability to hit the high notes. Her rendition of "come per sereno" is spirited.

Gounod, Faust. "The Jewel Song." Very smooth singing; animated singing. But the technique does not measure up to Anna Moffo's version--let alone Joan Sutherland's.

Puccini, La Boheme. "Musetta's Waltz." Yikes! What a version. Brava Netrebko. Her darker voice is very well suited to this. The characterization of Musetta seems on the mark. A wonderful cut.

All in all, this shows the promise of Netrebko. It also indicates where her strengths are and where she does not do so well (coloratura work). However, this is a very nice introduction to her work and her art.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable!.......2006-11-02

Perhaps her voice is not as candid as some other sopranos, but her rendition of the score and interpretative expression make her and exquisite hearing pleasure. This recording shows a more matured artist capable of capturing the role dynamics and emotions.

Yes, her voice is not as lyric as you might expect, and some roles may sound a little big heavy (sometimes maybe bordering verismo), but definitively at stated before hearing her is a gloriuos pleasure, almost as good as looking at her.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice, beautiful girl.......2005-11-22

When I heard Anna Netrebko singing Quando Men Vo I was stunned by a voice of stunning purity, great power and sheer beauty. The best Musetta I've heard! Her Song to the moon is stunning and I love her Bel Canto! Anna Netrebko has a very bright future ahead of her. Her Mozart is top class!

Why pick on a girl for taking a chance? After experiencing flagging sales, Jewel has become proactive and given herself a cosmetic and artistic makeover. But 0304 isn't the winsome thrush's first leap into the unknown. Hiring Shakira producer Lester A. Mendez to give her solemn, folksy songs a pop sheen and some dance beats isn't as radical as starring as a Civil War widow in an Ang Lee film. Besides it's a lot more interesting to hear her squeeze her chaste, malleable soprano around an accordion solo in the futuristic namedropping fable "Intuition" or her voice a beat-driven condemnation of the George W. Bush regime on "America" to see her sashaying on the silver screen in those tight bodices and hoop skirts. Although she has changed the very structure and sound of her songs, Jewel's undeniable talent shines through. She still has a way with words and her voice is remains as pure as an Alaskan stream. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-04-25

This is a masterful mix of folk and semi-techno dance. Every song is good and her voice is amazing and sexy. Lyrics include some interesting commentary from an artist who according to many critics has "nothing to say". Can be listened to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel's Best Album.......2007-02-01

I was never a big fan of Jewel as a folk rock artist. On this album she reinvents herself as a mainstream dance and pop artist. The songs are much more fun and upbeat than her prior work. I found that to be a pleasant and refreshing surprise. It's always fun to see artists try out different styles and approaches to their music. Many of Jewel's hardcore fans have unfairly criticized her for this doing this album. Personally, I think this is her finest work.

5 out of 5 stars Super CD.......2007-01-07

This is , by far, the best Cd by Jewell, ever. I own all her Cd,s and although it falls out of her style(folk), it is still poetic and sends a musical message. I think she is just trying to prove to people she can do it all...and she can. I hope she keeps this style as part of her format. She is truly a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars A Album To Be Remembered.......2007-01-06

Not only does the title of the album 0304 show that this record was meant to be something to remember, but the uniqueness of it shows it. When people think of Jewel they think of how she used to be from her 1st album, her real fans never seemed to grasp the real uniquness of Jewel which was that she could do whatever she wants whenever she wants. If she wants to do folk she can do folk, if she wants to do rock she can do rock, if she wants to do jazz she can do jazz, in this case she chose to modern pop and I couldn't be more happier. Songs like Intuition are more than just songs with some good dance sounds, underneath the melody there are some of the most well written lyrics with messages that will blow your mind. For example, the song Yes U Can. When people hear it they think, "It's just a song with a hip beat," when actually her message has to do with the way people live. We go around and have this wild atmosphere where anything and everything can happen. She's saying that guys and girls can do whatever they want, but actually she is pointing out the easiness and non cunning way it takes for someone to get what they want and in this case the person is getting love or one time pleasures. Like this song, the songs off this album is like "a needle in a haystack," it's something you have to search for if you really want to know what she's talking about. It's not that Jewel sold out, it's that people don't want to look for a message anymore. They want it given to them like a toy at Christmas. You don't even have to search for it, but in this case you have to. I find this album a total treasure and will take advantage of the messages that she gives to us. Will you?

2 out of 5 stars Good to see an artist change.........2006-11-20

It's always good to see an artist change and try new things. Back in 2003 when Jewel did, it was a big deal. Everyone accused her of selling out, which I think is unfair. This disc, while different, is just not what I would call Jewel at her best. I found "America" somewhat enjoyable and "Run 2 U" was also, but the rest of the CD did not sit well with me. I did give her a second chance and recently bought her 2006 CD, Goodbye, and I must say, it's Jewel slowly regaining her musicality. Also glad to here that she will be making a country CD next, it will fit her voice well.

Morrissey's first new album since the nineties is a triumph. Powered by a formidable quartet, the twin guitars spit fire that matches every wounded issue Morrissey tears into. Never one to mince words, he comes out swinging, taking America to task and then turning his attention on his homeland with the blistering "Irish Blood, English Heart." You Are the Quarry is so effective because it's less an overt rallying cry than a heartfelt plea for the world to make sense to him again. Elsewhere, relationships are given such a uniquely vibrant vantage point as to render any other angle blind. His wordplay mixes the coy invention of Cole Porter with a feisty contemporary showman's sense of stagecraft, wit, and drama. "Close your eyes, and think of someone you physically admire, and let me kiss you." It doesn't get much better to that. And wedded to charging hooks, these songs will move into your head and never leave. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars could it be i like you?.......2006-06-01

for some unspeakable reason, i didn't buy this album when it was released. actually i didn't buy it until after buying and devouring "the ringleader of the tormentors." i enjoyed that one so much that i backed up to this one. i played it until i thought i should give it a rest. the rest period lasted about two weeks. i had to get it back out. i'll just buy another one if it begins to wear out.
to be honest, i don't really understand my obsession with it. i utterly despise greatest hits collections...and, though this isn't one, it could be. there is not one weak song; not one weak moment. his voice is in excellent form. his wit is still peerless. the writing is flawless. i find myself dancing through the house when it's on; i find myself singing along in the car.
it's not the smiths, but it doesn't try to be. these are the insights of our morrissey with some years under his belt. those years haven't tarnished his ability to speak his truths, which apparently encompass some truths of my own.
thanks to this work, i have been driven to re-experience all of morrissey's work...from "viva hate" all the way to the present. he has created an awesome body of work.
anyone who enjoys this album should pick up "who put the m in manchester." having never had the privilege of seeing morrissey live, it's fun to watch him bring many of the songs on this album to life on the stage. our morrissey is a real character.

4 out of 5 stars Simply a very good album.......2006-04-16

I've never been a Smiths fan, or a Morrissey fan for what matters.
I knew who the Moz was, of course -it would have been hard not to, being a teenager in the 80's and all- but for decades I was only dimly aware of Bigmouth or Sunday playing on the radio, as sort of a household soundtrack for my teenage memories.

About a year ago, however, I heard "Let me kiss you" on the train and it brought back all those feelings of helpless childish infatuation, when you felt you were the ugliest duckling around and the object of your affection was oh so unreachable. It really moved me, and I thought maybe there's more to Morrissey than meets the eye. I mean the ear. Whatever.

And some weeks later, Hector came riding those guitars with a gun in his hand, stealing from the rich and the poor and the not very rich (me!) and the very poor, and the Moz stole my heart away.

What I'm saying is, this is a great album, period. I don't know about earlier or later works, nor do I care: taken as a unit, this album is highly enjoyable.

Yes he's whiny at times, no I couldn't care less if he's forgiven Jesus or not, but hey, we already know what the Moz is like sometimes. He's that slightly embarrasing uncle who brings those great presents and has those great stories to tell when he comes to visit.

Put the embarrasing aside, and there's a fistful of great stories/songs, to enjoy here.

3 out of 5 stars YOU ARE THE QUARRY : feels like a comeback.......2006-04-12

yes yes yes..it had been quite a long time since Morrissey had released a new album before Quarry...but he had never gone away. there were still numerous tours and plenty of new songs being aired in his live shows...but there simply was no record deal. so this album is a "comeback" of sorts if it's viewed in terms of popularity...seeeing as how this album ranked really high when it was first released and all of us Moz fans were dizzy with excitement for months and months. some were shouting "best Morrissey album ever!" and while that's a bit of a exageration; there is plenty to be excited about here. and there are a few surprises that left many fans cold. the production, for instance, is staunch and punchy and sounds polished to a glistening bright sound. it sounds good...but maybe not the best sound for Morrissey. there are some moments of brilliance on this album, as with the standout single "First Of The Gang To Die" and the beautiful "Come Back To Camden." those two tracks are my favorite songs on Quarry and (in my opinion) they best represent the Morrissey that most of his fans know and love. having said that, the remainder of the songs here are good...really good. a few painful lyrics pop up here and there (i cringe with uncomfort every time i hear that "hamburger" line in "America Is Not The World"). one more thing i do not appreciate about this album are the goofy electronic stuff that blips and bleeps in some of the songs. most notably in the song "All The Lazy Dykes." this song carries a wonderful melody and has a pleasant dreaminess to it (actually, i was surprised at how much that song was maligned by fans; considering how much of a Vauxhall And I feeling i associate with it...despite the interruptive synthesizer stuff). so...overall, i'd give You Are The Quarry a 3.5. it's a good album and was so overjoyed when it first came out...but now, looking back, it's not quite as good without the "comeback" hype surrounding it...but still a solid album.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-04-03

I can see why this album got good reviews, because it has a sort of modern sheen and renewed swagger to it, and branches out somewhat from obvious Morrissey work, but unfortunately I don't think it has the songs to match. Lyrically, it's pretty dire - 'America Is Not The World' is an utterly tired anti-US rant, 'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores' the same against manufactured pop stars, and the withering wit of old has become predictable and not at all edgy. On other tracks, he's wallowing in self-pity, with 'I Have Forgiven Jesus' and 'How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel' particularly unbearable, in both cases letting down some decent music, and the latter sounding like self-parody, culminating in Morrissey melodramatically caterwauling 'JESUS! YOU HATE ME! DO YOU HATE ME, DO YOU HATE ME?'.

Elsewhere ,it's a little better. 'Irish Blood, English Heart' is a blistering, dramatic firework show powered along by urgent, frenetic guitars, and 'First Of The Gang To Die' is easily the closest thing here to the Smiths of old, a classic tune with some witty lines. Nothing comes close to those two tracks, but the aforementioned 'This World Is Fully Of Crashing Bores' is musically, at least, pleasantly expansive and sweeping, and 'Let Me Kiss You' is a witty take on lovelorn balladry ('close your eyes/and think of someone you physically admire/and let me kiss you'). Not all the music is as successful: the bubbling, skipping 'I Like You' just sounds quite silly, especially in the chorus, and 'Come Back To Camden' and 'I'm Not Sorry' are meandering ballads with MOR production that never really go anywhere. When Morrissey sounds silly, it's sad, because The Smiths could be utterly absurd without ever sounding silly.

1 out of 5 stars This album is terrible........2006-03-21

"You Are the Quarry is so effective because it's less an overt rallying cry than a heartfelt plea for the world to make sense to him again." (from the Amazon.com review above)

Sure. As soon as young people start to respect this aging has-been the world will start to make more sense to him. Any day now...

This album is terrible. Morrissey is terrible, too. I loved everything between Bona Drag and Southpaw Grammar, and I've seen the guy many times, but this album sucks. Maladjusted sucked. Morrissey has lost his touch. ONLY high-schoolers trying to fake some kind of cachet and PAID REVEIWER STOOGES will find anything of merit on this album. "English Heart..." sounds like some old, drunk Irishman wandered into the world's most expensive studio while a bunch of fifteen-year-olds from Orange County, CA were trying to start a mall-emo band. Thumbs down!

Amazon.com essential recording

This vocal recital certainly lives up to its title, perhaps too well. It's a collection of arias and songs Fleming has sung for years that for some may be too much frosting and not enough cake. Surely, her performances are rich with interpretive nuances, wonder-filled portamentos and word colorings that reflect a long history with this repertoire, which ranges from Charpentier's "Depuis le jour" to Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise." Some may find Fleming a bit much, but agree with her or not, she's far more interesting than singers who keep a safe, discreet distance from the music. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best........2007-04-11

I've given away at least a dozen copies of this CD. I'm running low, so I just refilled the stash. For people who haven't discovered Renee Fleming or who think they don't care for opera, this CD is the best possible way to blow down the walls. If you think there's nothing new to be heard in these old arias, you owe it to yourself to find out how wrong you can be.

IT'S A FINE RECORDING THAT OFFERS A VARIETY OF SELECTIONS FROM OPERA, OPERETTAS AND FOLK SONGS, ALL WITH FLEMING AT HER BEST.

5 out of 5 stars The most gorgeous soprano voice I've ever heard.......2006-01-02

I am a 19-year-old voice student at the University of Central Arkansas and I came across Renee by way of a soprano in my voice studio. She said it was her favorite soprano and that I should give her a listen. I was a little hesistant because I'm a baritone and my voice teacher told me that I should listen to men, but I just want to hear it all. So this past summer I first bought Renee's self-titled album with all of the lolipop arias on it and I was just amazed, not just because of how good she is but how easy she is to listen to. I loved her voice immediately. From the the moment the first tone passed through her throat on Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro." So I had to hear more. The Beautiful Voice is even better. It wasn't as easy to listen to at first because some of the songs on this album are not as famous as those on the other one, but these songs are all gems. The Korngold with the pianissimi B flats is my personal favorite. Even my mother who screams at me to turn down that "noise" when I listen to opera cds has grown to be quite fond of Renee Fleming. Sometimes her interpretations can be over the top, but the voice is beyond spectacular. It pours out like melted butter. It's vibrant, rich, expressive, free and always perfectly in tune. There is no hint of strain from any sound emitted from her body. She will undoubtedly be remembered like Callas & Sutherland and all the other great soprano voices before her. Not for the dramatic intensity of Callas or the coloratura & technical ease of Sutherland, but for the sheer unspeakable beauty of her voice. This is a must have for any vocalist seriously dedicated to classical training.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2005-09-28

This album is the album that introduced me to Renee Fleming. Every selection on this recording is a gem. Her voice is so gorgeous and her technique is so solid. I love her voice so much, her interpretations of J. Strauss, Jr.'s Csardas is incredible and Puccini's Chi il bel sogno di Doretta makes me cry everytime I listen to it. She is a true American treasure. Brava Renee!!!
