5 out of 5 stars Urban is as smooth as it sounds.......2007-01-04

This new album sounds as smooth as the title itself.Bob James is a musical keyboard player. This album reminds me of the album "cool" Bob James with Earl Klugh .It has the combination of urban, RnB ,smooth and 80's soul .It's a must have even if you are not a Bob James fan.

5 out of 5 stars Urban Flamingo, CD.......2006-11-06

Bob James is the Picasso of the keyboard. His "Taxi" theme is so recognizable and just a small part of his influence in jazz music. His role in the group Foreplay is just another facet in the music world. This CD takes the player to the synth side of his ivory-tickling quest for rubbing our ears together to start a fire in our souls.
"Choose Me" is one of the coolest tunes I've heard in a long time and prompted me to purchase the project.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasurable trip back to the 80's.......2006-10-02

I have ordered this CD from Amazon and since arriving found it very hard to put down. It is very good to hear Bob's music like the music which made me become a BJ fan in the late 70's. The individual artists on this CD bring the best out of each track just like it did on albums like "Touchdown" and "H". Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic here because of some very familiar guitar sounds!
I think Bob James fans will find this a pleasurable addition to their collections.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Bob James...with a retro twist...........2006-02-25

I figured this to be another great "smooth jazz" effort from Bob James, which wouuld have been great...but was even more pleasantly surprised to find that this entire cd is a throwback to 1980's contemporary jazz with a lean towards pop & r&b. It is refreshing to hear a little retro flavor, especially with the smart and polished use of synthesisers throughout. This is probably the most melodic cd from James since his 1996 effort, entitled "Playin' Hooky".
I would recommend this new one especially for those who truly miss the Yellowjackets, Lee Ritenour and Joe Sample releases from the mid to late eighties.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disc!!!.......2006-04-01

Flamingo is one of the greatest rock n roll records released ever! No question about it. Ranks at the top with Pet Sounds, Super Session (look it up, yuppie morons), Who's Next, Kind of Blue and Love it to Death as some of the best music released ever. The Flamin' Groovies are truly, along with The Dictators, unsung heroes of Rock and Roll. If you can appreciate great music, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars dutiful rock sums it up.......2006-03-20

why does everyone have to observe everything under a microscope?? it's not genesis, it's not the jefferson airplane, it's not big star, it's the flamin' groovies, and they probably would have hated all of you nit-pickers. so what if their sound owes major debts to 50's rock? their sound is fun, energetic, and inspiring. i view the groovies as part of a whole that includes other great bands like x, the flesh eaters, the cramps, the gun club, captain beefheart, the stones, ccr, etc. "flamingo" and "teenage head" are great records that i enjoy very much. if you can't dig it, i hope you have fun with "close to the edge." the groovies are sloppy, wild, and amazing. "shake some action" is another great record, but COMPLETELY different. they should have changed their name when that came out.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite high energy rock and roll...........2004-05-05

This is a masterpiece. Get this and "Teenage Head" and see what the Stones could have been if they hadn't gotten so full of themselves....

4 out of 5 stars No dues.......2004-04-06

Another example of the artists being ripped off by the record companies. BMG released this in 1999 and hasn't paid a single dime in mechanicals/royalties to Jordan or Loney as of 2004. Buy "Groovies Greatest Grooves" or Norton's "Slow Death" instead.

4 out of 5 stars Primo primer to '50's Rock N Roll Revival.......2002-12-28

"Flamingo" was the only Flamin' Groovies album I had and this is the only CD of theirs I have. I used to play only Side 1 of the LP which is tracks 1 thru 6 of the CD.(But what a GRRRRREAT six tracks!)The CD bonus tracks are way better than the original Side 2 of the LP, track 7 thru 10.

"Flamingo" was the Groovies entry into 1970's revival of '50s style Rock N Roll. Sha Na Na had made a big splash six months earlier at Woodstock and the subsequent 1970 movie "Woodstock" gave a major push to the '50s rock revival. The liner notes state that the Flamin' Groovies were extremely influenced by seeing MC5 in Detroit during MC5's "Back In The USA" phase and that's highly evident on these cuts. High energy old fashioned Rock N Roll to the MAX!

Man, "Flamingo" is Flamin' with HOT, HOT, HOT rock riffs! Here is your Rock & Roll primer! I can play tracks 1 thru 6 again and again. "Gonna Rock Tonite" is straight forward Rock and Roll incorporating almost all the great riffs plus a great Bass and then Drum solo section."Comin' After Me" spoofs '50s horror flicks (think "Night of the Living Dead") "Ten headhunters with a buzzsaw, 8 state troopers with a meathook, four headhunters with a mace can and they was Comin' After Me" "Headin for the Texas Border" is driving rock n roll. Try to stay still! "Sweet Roll Me On Down The Line" is rock-a-billy DooWop. "Keep A Knockin" is a Groovies' jackhammer on your front door. "Second Cousin" is a spoof on Jerry Lee Lewis' music and Life-style. " She's my second cousin on my good ol' pappy's side. An' they say that lovin' her is out of line. But I'm gonna make my second cousin my first bride"

Side two of the LP which is tracks 7 thru 10 on the CD sounds almost like a different band. Definitely a different style. "Jailbait" and "Roadhouse" are good, with blistering lead guitar on "Roadhouse" But the bonus tracks on the CD are more Great good ol' Rock N Roll. These cuts should have been the LP's Side 2.Great covers of "Walkin The Dog", Louie Louie" and "Rockin Pnuemonia" THIS REVIEW REFERS TO THE BIG BEAT VERSION OF THIS CD

5 out of 5 stars Two fully honourable people.......2004-11-29

Ihad the chance, some years ago, to listen to a Grappelli's live concert in London: the impression was that violin was actually able to give Grappelli a new kind of life, the moment he would just look at it. Conversely, the hall was soon filled by notes absolutely out of the ordinary: simply, really nothing can compare to taht kind of experience. Petrucciani also was a monster (I could only watch-listen to some concertoes on TV), and every square millimetre of his piano was litterally in love with his incredible hands. This album sees both beloved monsters playing, loving together, and surelly will make you love some kind of music to be to my opinion considered immortal.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It, You'll Love It, Trust Me!.......2004-03-09

Stephane and Michel will simply astound you on this very fine outing. With countless imitators covering the music made famous by Grappelli and Rhinehardt during the hey-day of their Hot Club of France, this one really stands out. Inventive, swinging and always tasteful, it will be spinning for a long time on your CD player. Regretfully both are gone, but this record is testament to their glorious chemistry together. Buy it, trust me, you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Gets you hummin'.......2001-02-27

It used to be my yardstick: If I found myself humming along after a few cuts, then the music had me. That's certainly the case here. Two old masters -- now both regrettably gone -- still at the top of their form. I play this CD over and over, listen intently, or just put it on for background for any activity. You will treasure this CD in your collection even if you don't like jazz -- even if you don't like music!

5 out of 5 stars A Joyous, Buoyant Recording.......2000-02-02

This highly listenable CD features swing violin legend Stephan Grappelli and pianist Michel Petrucciani as soloists on a program of jazz standards. As with Keith Jarrett's Standards trio, the deservedly familiar melodies serve as launch pads for joyous, interactive improvisations. Both Grappelli and Petrucciani shape solo statements that are inventive and memorable: you can sing them after a few listens. There is a lightness of spirit that pervades the album. George Mraz on bass and Roy Hayne on drums provide responsive support. The jazz virtues are in evidence here.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......1999-09-18

Quite simply, one of the most brilliant and serene jazz albums ever recorded. Two geniuses, now both sadly no more, at the height of their powers, effortlessly bridging their generation gap,in a joyous, melodic and totally accessible celebation. An essential album!

5 out of 5 stars A golden nugget shining brightly !!!.......2007-03-08

Bobby Darin considered this to be his last "live" performance at the time this was recorded; but thank goodness he did entertain people on TV and in other appearances for a decade more. Darin was able to do anything: Booby Darin could croon, swing, do rock and roll and impressions all like the "pro's pro" he truly was. This CD proves Darin's artistry shone brilliantly when he performed in public; and it also demonstrates his ability to lead his audience wherever he wanted them to go.

The CD opens with an electric rendition of "Hello Young Lovers" and switches gears somewhat for the slower paced "Ace In The Hole." The piano arrangement accompanies Bobby flawlessly. I like the way Bobby and the band switch arrangements mid-stream as they go into what is a decidedly a much more big band style arrangement. Excellent!

"You're Nobody `Til Somebody Loves You" represents a high point in this concert as Bobby croons to perfection with his band playing so beautifully. Bobby and the band are in perfect synchronicity; as they get louder his voice raises, too. I agree with the reviewer who writes that on "Mack The Knife" Bobby's voice cannot rise in volume as much as the band does; and I also noticed that this happens a second time near the very end of "You're Nobody `Til Somebody Loves You." Unfortunately, his poor health may account for the fact that he couldn't quite get these few last notes out firmly enough.

Bobby also does a great medley of four songs with high octane energy in barely more than three minutes: he sings "Splish Splash/Beyond The Sea/Artificial Flowers/Clementine" without a superfluous note. The audience loves it as they applaud wildly and you'll love it, too! Bobby rarely performed "Splish Splash" live so this track adds great value to this CD.

Bobby's rendition of "My Funny Valentine" moves me with its beauty; and Bobby excels at comedy, too. For this concert Bobby does a nine minute comedy routine with great impressions of Jerry Lewis, James Cagney, Dean Martin and Clark Gable amongst other greats.

"Michael (Row The Boat Ashore)" gets the royal treatment from Bobby and the band; together they emphasize the spiritual beauty of this ballad. "I'm On My Way Great God" is, unfortunately, semi-autobiographical as Bobby Darin knew his life would be a short one because he was born with a rheumatic heart. The closing number, "The Curtain Falls" boasts a strikingly beautiful musical arrangement; Bobby thought he didn't want to perform live ever again and so Bobby chose "The Curtain Falls" to share his feelings with his audience about "the closing nightclub appearance for (him) for quite a while." The piano intro shines and Bobby sings this with an extra special sensitivity to end the concert precisely the way he wanted it to end. "The Curtain Falls" evokes sentimental feelings for his past triumphs and provides an ending for this concert that is as sweet as it is strong.

The liner notes have an extensive essay about Bobby's life and career written by James Ritz; and the cover art is tastefully done. Excellent!

Bobby Darin possessed such energy and strength whenever he performed that people will never forget him. His CDs are still selling to this day. I highly recommend this for Bobby Darin fans and people who enjoy classic pop vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Bobby Darin, the entertainer........2006-12-20

This is another Darin.
Bobby shows himself as a fine entertainer and tries to fit in the shoes or the footsteps of Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr..
Classy.

5 out of 5 stars Historic recording of Bobby Darin's "last" live performance........2005-09-08

Before this live performance--November, 1963, at the Flamingo Hotel--Bobby Darin had announced that this would be "the closing night club performance for me for quite a while." Only twenty-seven and suffering from heart problems, he was already using oxygen between sets, his high-energy live performances so draining that retirement in favor of less strenuous aspects of his career was his only option. Here he gives his all in one stupendous complete performance at the Flamingo.

A mature performer, despite his age, Darin does everything from hot rock and roll to swing, moody ballads, folk, and a bluesy spiritual. Sounding Sinatra-like on the ballads at the beginning of the show--"Ace in the Hole," which he does "dirty," and "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You"--he works the room, progressing into comedy with a "Medley of 'Ballads,'" including "Splish Splash," and "Beyond the Sea," before reverting once again to a real ballad, "My Funny Valentine," the purest and prettiest song on the CD. As soon as the audience is feeling sentimental, however, he hits them with his version of "I Walk the Line," which begins, "I keep my pants up with a piece of twine."

"Mack the Knife," his 1959 Record of the Year, may (or may not) show his failing health. Though he gradually increases the song's tempo and passion, much of the intensity at the climax comes from the band, which becomes noticeably louder, though Darin's voice does not. A ten-minute comedy routine follows, in which he plays a drunk talking with a bartender, giving impressions of Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Marlon Brando, and Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, among others. The audience participates in the folk songs, "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" and "Mary Don't You Weep," and then Darin sings the touching "I'm on My Way, Great God," a bluesy (and sadly ironic) spiritual which he composed.

On the final track, "The Curtain Falls," a song written as a farewell to performing, Darin sings "If I had this to do again, and the evening were new again, I would spend it with you again, but now the curtain falls." I'm sure there was not a dry eye in the house. (Darin felt well enough to return to the stage 2 1/2 years later but died following heart surgery at age 37.) Mary Whipple

4 out of 5 stars Only for die-hard fans.......2005-02-22

If you don't love Bobby Darin All The Way, this is not the "live" CD for you - "Live at the Copa" is much better - this is Bobby just as he was trying some transitional music- can you imagine sitting in a club in Vegas in '63 and this dude starts with "Michael Row the Boat ..." Darin's energy was gone from his act, I think due to personal distractions and his frustration with the changing audience. For DArin die-hards like me, every note the man sang is perfect, but retrospectively this marked the beginning of a difficult period in Bobby's life.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Darin At His Best.......2001-12-26

This one CD alone showcases the depth of Bobby Darin's outstanding talent. He performs every song with feeling and emotion, giving the listener the enjoyment they deserve. In this CD, he covers every genre of music, from the swinging standards to his well known hits, from country to folk to gospel, with his great sense of humor and comedy mixed right in. His impersonations are wonderful, from Jimmy Stewart to Cary Grant. It's all here, at its best. The band backing him up is superb, making this the perfect musical combination. You feel as though you're actually there. One of the best live performances ever recorded, and one of the best CDs ever made. I highly recommend it, and am very grateful it was released after having been stored away for so many years. Whether you love Bobby Darin and/or really good music- BUY IT! It's just as good as "Sinatra at the Sands." Recorded in early November, 1963.

    Album Description

Following up a debut CD that sold over 135,000 copies and spawned a #1 Billboard Country hit is no easy task for any artist. With the additional hurdle of the demise of his label to overcome, Mark McGuinn triumphantly returns with "One Man Crazy" on his own label Blue Flamingo that he co-founded with long time publisher and songwriter Jim Foster. Although mark describes this release as more eclectic than the last, there are at least three radio friendly songs that will serve to bring out those fans that he established last time around while also introducing him to a whole new audience. From the opening chords on the title cut of "One Man's Crazy" you'll know what you're about to listen to is going to be fresh....different...and more than electrifying. "I like to think of myself as Mr Haney (Green Acres) with a martini" states McGuinn. That's how I describe my music: POPCORN-WITH HOLLENDAISE SAUCE".

Sorry about the very, very bad title. I got a kick out of it though!

This album is amazing! Again, Mark has impressed me with his writing ability. Every song is different, which is great in the cookie cutter country world. I really think this album is great!

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-07-19

As usual, this CD from Mark McGuinn highlights his outstanding writing ability! It has been a long wait - but worth every minute!

    5 out of 5 stars More Than A One-Hit Wonder!.......2006-07-15

If this world was a fair one, Mark McGuinn would be the biggest star in country music today. Not only is he a great singer, but he wrote every song on "One Man's Crazy".
Best known for "Mrs. Steven Rudy", he is much more than a one-hit wonder. Give this gem of an album a chance. If the major laels paid as much attention and care to the albums they put out as Mark did to this album, which he produced, country music would be less a business and more what it used to be; a collection of relatable stories that touch their listeners.
While purchasing this album, I ask humbly if you would consider also purchasing a little book of which I am very proud. It's a bit of a family heirloom. I wrote it when my grandfather was sick with cancer. He's gone now, but before he left us he was able to read "his" book, "Prose From A Grandson To A Senior Fellow". Please consider reading it yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Jam Session.......2003-03-21

Some of Britain's top original modern jazzers in a blasting jam session from the mid-1950s. Mostly up-tempo blues, great soloing from Ronnie Scott and Harry Klein (saxes), solid rhythm section in Terry Shannon (piano), Lennie Bush (bass) and Tony Crombie (drums), plus guesting on two numbers the marvellous Tubby Hayes on tenor sax. Good stuff.
