Though Joan Osborne has referred to this as "my version of a country record," the music is likely to find more favor in coffee shops and on NPR than with honky-tonks and the Grand Ole Opry. It conjures comparisons with Rosanne Cash's artistry after her country hitmaking days, as if Osborne came to Nashville to make the sort of music that Cash left Nashville to make. While it may not achieve the commercial success that Osborne enjoyed with her popular breakthrough, "One of Us," it's the most consistently compelling album of her career. Produced by Steve Buckingham (Dolly Parton), with harmony support from Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, and Rodney Crowell, Osborne mixes six strong originals with six choice covers, rarely overpowering the material through displays of vocal technique, as she occasionally has in the past. Much of the material deals with the aftermath of relationships (including one with a woman on "After Jane"), with results ranging from a mixture of resilience and vulnerability on the title track through the insistent groove of "Who Divided" and the eternal optimism of "Till I Get It Right." There's also a folkish rendition of the Grateful Dead's "Brokedown Palace" that Osborne makes her own, and some live-wire slide guitar from Sonny Landreth on "Dead Roses." The closest she comes to classic country is a bittersweet reading of Kris Kristofferson's "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends," while the closing balladry of "When the Blue Hour Comes" (with co-writer Rodney Crowell on harmonies) is pure heartbreak. --Don McLeese

This is the Vanguard label debut from premier vocalist and songwriter Joan Osborne. Recorded in Nashville and produced by Grammy winner, Steve Buckingham, the album highlights the soulful sound of Joan Osborne with elements of country, blues and Americana.
This 12 song collection features six original tunes written by Joan and also compositions by Kris Kristofferson 'Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends', Jerry Garcia /Robert Hunter 'Brokedown Palace' and Patty Griffin 'What You Are'.
The album also features some of music's finest performers lending their talents including Vince Gill on 'Time Won't Tell,' Alison Krauss, 'Holy Waters', Sonny Landreth playing slide guitar on 'Dead Roses' and Rodney Crowell providing harmony vocals on his own 'When The Blue Hour Comes'.
Osborne sings like a woman with nothing to prove.
On the country-tinged "Pretty Little Stranger", the former vocalist for the Grateful Dead applies her smooth, soulful voice to six of her own edgy songs as well as to more-traditional material.
Her tough title track speculates who will be "the next fool" to take her home, and After Jane is a howl of misery sent out to a lost love: "I can't laugh / I can't moan / I can't leave myself alone / After Jane".
She mellows out with a touching cover, enhanced by retro steel guitar, of Kris Kristofferson's "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends"; and a warm, haunting version of Rodney Crowell's "When the Blue Hour Comes", on which Crowell provides supporting vocals.
Joan herself considers "Pretty Little Stranger", her first album containing original material in six years, as almost a "genre" album, in that she consciously took the genre of country music, which has certain constraints built in, and put her own sensibility into it, producing a very credible contribution to the genre without compromising on quality or accessibility.
Sometimes she brings a not-readily-definable, slightly unsettling undertow to her admirably earthy songs of love and life, one that's not quite orthodox in standard country; dealing confidently with the whole emotional gamut from lost to lusty, seductive to lonesome, she avoids triteness in essaying a genre that's often renowned for that quality!
Difficult to explain, you just have to hear it.

I was only alittle aware of Joan Osborne, before I heard "Who Divided" on the radio as I was driving home very late at night - - I liked it so much, I actually pulled off to the side of the road and wrote down the title and artist so I wouldn't forget! I NEVER do that .... "Who Divided", which Joan wrote, is still my favorite song on the CD, but there are no duds here!! It's a great listen from start to finish - - Lightning 100, here in Nashville, is playing it, and I hope it does well for her all over the USA - - it's an EXCELLENT CD.

Though this 1975 album cost Willie only $20,000 to record, it handed him the success he'd craved after years as a hit songwriter and modestly successful singer. By blending originals and vintage material, he created a timeless Western saga, one that originally left Columbia Records, who'd guaranteed him artistic control, skeptical. The label's doubts, amplified by the fact that Nelson had recorded the album in Texas with only his seven-piece touring band, evaporated after the album and two singles, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and "Remember Me," became huge hits and launched Willie into the stratosphere. Stark, depressing, moving, quiet, sad, redemptive, and superb. All of these adjectives describe what many believe to be the primary Willie Nelson masterpiece, 1975's Red Headed Stranger. This classic was smartly reissued in 2000 with some great bonus tracks and much-improved sound. A necessity in anyone's music collection.

This was Willie Nelson's breakthrough album, released in 1975, when Willie was 42 years. It is a concept album, telling a story about the Wild West in 1901. The basic storyline is about a preacher who kill his wife and her lover, goes on the run and is eventually redeemed by the love of a good woman. The instrumentation is very sparse, usually featuring just acoustic guitar, piano and drums. Some of the songs are very short, being just long enough to advance the storyline. The album is most famous for featuring Willie's first #1 hit, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain". That song is great, of course, but so is the entire album. The CD features four bonus tracks which were recorded at the same sessions but left off of the original album. They are: Johann Sebastian Bach's "Minuet in G", Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)", Bob Wills' "A Maiden's Prayer" and Pee Wee King's "Bonaparte's Retreat". This CD is a must get for Willie Nelson fans.

Luis Mejia (son)- This album is the first big hit album done by Billy Joel. when a person thinks about Billy Joel, 3 or 4 tracks of this album come to your mind. I can easily say that Billy Joel's greatest era were the seventies, and I say it because of masterpieces like Turnstiles, Piano Man, Streetlife Serenade and, of course, The Stranger. Well, lets talk abuot the album. Being released in 1977, is the fifth Joel's album. It's notable that the album great success is in part because of the collaboration with producer Phil Ramone. Also, in honor to Joel, a Broadway musical was named after the first track Movin' Out. Now I'll briefly describe the tracks:

1. Movin' Out (Anthony's song): a fast, greatly composed five stars song. Joel describes in this track the empty aspirations of the middle class and low class in New York.

2. The Stranger: the tittle track that starts and ends with a soft, street-sound musical piece characterized by a catchy whistle. The song is written based on a strange, non-seen before feeling of a given situation that Joel recites as "the stranger".

3. Just The Way You Are: a grammy award-winner song (record of the year), certainly one of my favorites because it's soft, melodic, catchy and nice for hearing in any moment.

4. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant: my favorite Joel's song ever. It's a seven minute long song that has everything; soft pieces, tempo adjusts, quick enjoyable parts and a melody never seen on Joel's past cds.

5. Vienna: not much to say about this song, quite the worst among the best in this cd that is a common nice song.

6. Only The Good Die Young: a great enjoyable song, that, well, I can't quite say that it's a masterpiece, and it is a bit strange in the lyrics.

7. She's Always A Woman: a full piano song singed with great but simple style, also among my favorites Joel's songs. This would be the perfect track to represent the whole structure of the cd, and the best to hear first.

8. Get It Right The First Time: a perfect song for dancing, this is a track where Joel expresses a lot more espontaneous mood and catchy rythms.

9. Everybody Has A Dream: an inspiring song that I characterize mainly because of the great vocals that Joel applies on the song's chorus. I also can say that it's another masterpiece because of Joel great capacity of ending a masterpiece with a golden clip.

In conclussion this is my favorite Joel album, if you hasn't heard anything about Billy Joel or you've heard everything, this is certainly the perfect album for hearing. My sincere recommendations.

After a long absence, Billy Joel came out with this gem. If you are a fan of his, you absolutely MUST grab this CD.

Billy Joel continues his musical adventures with his familiar rolling piano lines, using the entire range of the keyboard and complementing it with adventuresome melodies and heartfelt, clever lyrics. Yet Billy Joel is none too content to merely fit in with a trend. Here he has a band that is very complementary to his many melodic changes, his whimsical harmonics, and his utterly creative way of combining lyricism with melody.

The album is intended to be conceptual, and the LP opens with the thematic Stranger- a slow introduction with a soft piano line, then it breaks into the song itself, with jazzy, assertive sax/brass/lead guitar accompaniments.
Then the whimsical, jazzy, humorous Anthony's song with it's line "Trading in a Chevy for a Cad-i-lac-yac-yac-yac-yac, You oughta know by now". OK, so he does sing with a thick Long Island accent, but that's a part of his color. The beautiful hit "Just the Way You Are" is here, with its heartfelt lyricism and gentle electronic melodic piano- a Joel classic! The long "Italian Restaurant" is a scenic, moody, nostalgic piece with Joel's trademark rolling melodic piano lines- be patient and let yourself be drawn into this pop masterpiece. "She's Always a Woman" is an attractive heartfelt song, even if it seems a filler compared to the other material. It did become another hit for Billy Joel. The only imperfect song in this collection is "Everybody Has a Dream"- for some reason, Joel has an alternate vocalization that is grating to my ears. It's still an above average song.

Billy Joel is a unique pop talent who must have appealed to millions of listeners, as his record sales attest to. Once in a while, an exceptionally talented perfomer makes it big in entertainment. And few deserved to more than Billy Joel.

Very diverse, catchy, well-written, -arranged & -performed. I would put this up there with "Born to Run" by the Boss, "London Calling" by the Clash, "My Aim is True" by Costello, "Look Sharp" by Joe Jackson, "Howlin' Wind" by Graham Parker, "Highway 61" or "Infidels" by Dylan. Yes, they're somewhat different styles, but I'm referring to the various influences and genres played here.

The magnificent one, the beautiful one, the one and only one..........2007-03-02

This album sizzles with energy, honesty, and "I'll MAKE you pay attention" entertainment spirit. This was his big breakthrough album and it's not hard to see why. Every single track is excellent, and each very different from what went before. From start to finish, the emphasis is on simple Beatleish rock arrangements, played with finesse by a great backing band, with the piano front and center. It starts off with plain rock and roll - Moving Out, with its thumpy rhythm and brilliant ending. The Stranger (apart from its stylish intro and outro) is a bit more funky, with a lovely bridge/chorus. The much maligned Just The Way You Are suffers from a bit of cheesiness in production (Billy Joel calls this "Phil Ramone's Bossa Nova version), but is still a good heartfelt song for his first wife (whatever happened to her anyways?). The centrepiece of the album is Scenes, this is Billy Joel's tour-de-force to show everyone what he can do on the ivories. Vienna is a beautiful ballad, and Only the Good Die Young is a hilarious dance tune, still racy 30 years later. Always a Woman is played a bit stiffly on piano, and borders on cheesy lyrics, but still a great tune. The next two tracks are a *bit* weaker, but have their moments and are still brilliant songs, just in comparison with what came before... He came close to topping this album on Glass Houses but this still stands as his finest album. If you're going to have just one of his albums, I would recommend this.

Melodically interesting.......2007-03-01

Of course Joel will be known as one of the best melody-creators of our time. One can always hum a Joel melody effortlessly. Everyone knows Joel's famous tracks on this album, but I like "Get it Right...." because of the inherent truth to the title. It's a good song.

Still wondering if I should use "Just the Way You Are" at my wedding (like everyone else).

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Seeker in Town...............2007-02-04

Yes people. I went out yesterday to see if I could see my shadow. All the townspeople clapped because I saw it! You know what this means, don't you? At least 6 MORE WEEKS of Metamorpho reviews! And, hopefully many more when the weather gets balmy (although some out there think I'm balmy enough already. Go figure). In any event- I am now imprisoned in my environment due to 2 feet of snow outside. So, I have grabbed a hot toddy and am now ready to reflect on this fine selection. Oh, before I forget, I resolved the imitation issue with my apprentice T. He had dated video tape to prove his whereabouts. He, however, directed your Metamorpho to a prankster named Jack. I will let you know how this turns out.
In an effort to rock on and prove to Guido a few things, I have picked Bob Seger's excellent "Stranger In Town" to review. What can one say about this gifted rock artist? I have always seen Seger as a white rock-soul artist (listen to that gritty soulful vocal approach!), but I do not like labels and, thus, you colour in your own impressions.
Some fine rock and ballads inhabit this great album. And he has hit upon at least one all-time classic with the airy, lovely "We've Got Tonight". Just a generous gem for sure.
The key motif for alot of Seger's songs seems to be his relationships with women. How their meeting is intense, how they come together like a blaze and, unfortunately, how they both move on. He moves along the slippery slope of human connections. However, wisely, sprinkles the music with a balance of rave-ups, excitement, melancholy, regrets and, finally, rambling forward with his quest. The rockers rock, the easier rock is smooth and glossy, and the ballads are all heartfelt. Quite nice.
We begin with that train-gallop of a beat with "Hollywood Nights". Yes. She had all the right skills but, as ill-fate would strike him (often) he eventually woke up alone. As a side note- in all of Seger's songs he somehow always seems to create an infectious "groove". And having a talented creative band doesn't hurt either. Listen to "Still the Same" and you'll see what I mean. A girl that gambles - and Bob knows a relationship with her would be a gamble that he would lose. Inclusion here of those backup female voices. The song oozes like sweet syrup.
"Old Time Rock & Roll" fits the Seger sound like a glove. Not much else to say here except if you haven't heard it a copy of it will be sent out IMMEDIATELY to your igloo in the artic. "Till It Shines" is a nice groove ballad about rising up from the imposed chains we put on ourselves. Nice word imagery here. "Feel Like a Number" is a nice rocker that is Bob's ode not to be just another face in the crowd. "Ain't Got No Money" (sounds strangely like "The Fire Down Below". No?) is the classic Seger strut song. No one is better at this than him.
I have already mentioned "We've Got Tonight", which I think is definitely the best ballad he's ever written. Then people, we get to one of Metamorpho's favorites "Brave Stranger". Sort of reminiscent of "Night Moves" subject matter. Listen to the piano, listen to the groove, listen to how the whole thing moves. We then have that stop and that soulful middle with the sax and those background singers. White soul extraordinaire. A joy, and then it moves upward, insistently, back into the main groove again. A wonderful tune. One that gets Metamopho's old blood cells moving once again
Then the ending, "The Famous Final Scene" which, ironically is last and one that, sadly, conveys all the ingredients included in a breakup. Listen to the crying sax- listen to Seger's mournful, soft, yearning vocals. So fine. So very fine.
In conclusion, this album has to be considered as one of his finest offerings - but, believe Metamorpho - there are many more. It is nice to see Mr. Seger out there recording again after such a long abscence. I asked my guides to "will" this to happen. After all, we missed that quality and had to have it in the 21st century. For all who like good rock- this is a must.
Well- that's it. Now I can only hope that some kid comes around that will shovel me out of this snowy mess. Do you think he'll accept spiritual currency? It's like a savings bond. Takes time to mature.

Good but different........2007-05-13

When I first played this Cd in my car it shocked me b/c it was such a different sound coming from them. In my opinion between their older stuff and their newer stuff there is quite a big difference. It took a few days but after constant rotation in my Cd player I was finally hooked!
"Heard the World" is an amazing song and its so catchy.
I'm actually going to their "Stories of a Stranger" summer concert and I'm so stoked about it!
so when you buy this don't throw it out automatically, give it a chance, you might find you like it better than you think!

The Evolution Of a Revolution.......2007-03-15

Of A Revolution (O.A.R.) has been around for quite some time and in that time has developed a sort of cult-following. Their music has gone through many different stages; their earliest resembling something caught between Marley-esque reggae type-subpop with lyrics that sounded like they could have been freestyled into a mic. What was produced some say is O.A.R.'s best work, it definitely gave them a perfect setting for future success.

Over the years the evolution of O.A.R. has not only come in the ways of highly-improved audio recordings but in the ways of more creative ways of using instruments and deeper, more meaningful lyrics. Their previous album, 'In Between Now and Then' was a beautiful step in the right direction but tried too hard to hang onto their rough roots as a hybrid band.

'Stories of a Stranger' is what comes after many years of evolving from a garage band playing college shows - to a band that can sell out any venue and that comes with a following that will eventually rival even the best bands in the world. The album encompasses every side of the band that has ever been shown and does it all better than any other album they've released has. From the start of the album you are taken on a type of musical journey where you hear everything from Pop, to Reggae-rock, to slower jazzy songs. Every side of O.A.R. shines on this album and even when they are at their slowest you still move to the beat.

This is a huge step in O.A.R.'s launch to stardom. It shows not only a versitile and capable musical style but creative use of instruments through slick bass-lines and dizzying saxophones. 'Stories of a Stranger' is a great album for new and old fans alike, every song offers something new and original that will keep you singing for months to come. The only thing better would be seeing them live, which offers an energy in its own class.

I cannot get enough of this band. My favorite band and I'm not dissapointed. It's impossible for them to dissapoint me. Another great CD, a little more poppy, but still a great, great CD. Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music.Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30

I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.

No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01

I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.

Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18

Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

Bad Religion, one of the last bands you'd expect to join the ranks of major-label rockers, makes the leap from its own Epitaph Records to Atlantic for its eighth album, Stranger Than Fiction. After a few listens it becomes better.......2006-08-09

Out of the 5 BR CDs I own (Process of Belief, Generator, No Control, Gray Race and Stranger than fiction) Id have to say this is the weakest of the 5. Not that thats a bad thing mind you, far from it infact. Its just this cd takes (well it did for me about 4 listens before I started to love it). The sound they portray on this cd is a very straightforward simplistic approach compared to say for example the process of belief. Its still an awesome cd but it lacks the intensity that I was hoping for. Some really good songs are included on this album such as Leave mine to me, Stranger than Fiction, Tiny Voices, The Handshake, Individual, Better off dead and Hooray for me. However there are a couple of weak tracks like Television feat Tim Armstrong of Rancid fame and the revision of the classic song: 21st Century Digital Boy. However look through all the subtle gripes Ive made and you'll find yourself ROCKING out to this after a few attempts. Just dont buy it and think that it is as intense as their other work. 1994 was a great year for punk rock. Green Day came out with Dookie, their first major label album... and Bad Religion gave the world Stranger Than Fiction.
Stranger Than Fiction was Bad Religion's first album on a major label, and was underappriecated by most old Bad Religion fans. But, no matter what they say, Stranger than Fiction is an awesome album.
THE BEST SONGS
Incomplete- classic Bad Religion. 'Mother, Father, look at your little monster. I'm a hero, I'm a zero.'
Stranger than Fiction- the song the album came from. Great, catchy, Bad Religion.
The Handshake- an intresting quick song. 'a handshake's nothing but a subtle f**k you.'
Slumber- you know you have an awesome band when they can take a slow song and make it one of the best in a great album. SLumber is a great song. Your Bad Religion collection isn't complete until you have this.

These are the best songs, but the album in genereal is wonderful. Any BAd Religion, heck, any punk rock fan needs this album.

Ok I understand this band is a classic in the punk scene, but it doesnt make their music any less boring. It feels like they're using the same chords over and over in different orders in each song, and also id like to know, is Tim Armstrong singing in Television? If yes please rate this review as useful if not then rate it as unuseful.

the god of BR's atlantic years.......2006-03-28

when i first got into BR, i shyed away from this album like a fool at first. i thought when people said "they left epitaph", that they changed and sold out.......selling out is green day folks. BR signing to atlantic was something that provided some major changes is music and lineup.(following this album)

i just have to say, i love this album to death. infected is definately a song that is a total landmark. i also think the title song is amazing as well. some songs like tiny voices and slumber are hidden gems.

the only gripe is that they had to remake 21st century digital boy. that was totally unnecessary, but it doesnt really matter too much.

i would say that this album is an essential cd for BR fans, but not their best by far. i may put it on par with generator. this album is the biggest fish on the small pond of BR albums on atlantic records.(recipe for hate, gray race, no substance, and new america)
