A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes his tunes "Look Around" and "So Many Stars" are included. But this collection really surveys his interpretations of pop tunes of the day, some of which were never hits for Mendes. The small combo's light touch and rich vocal harmonies make for pleasant if kitschy covers of hits like the Beatles' "Fool On The Hill" and "Day Tripper," Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love," and others. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Love This Group!.......2007-06-22

Learned about this group while in college in the 60s and saw them perform in person. While their songs have a Latin and/or sultry beat, their renditions of songs in this CD are varied and wonderful. Songs from the Beatles, Cole Porter (fabulous rendition of "Night and Day")and composers Alan and Marilyn Bergman have very unique interpretations.

5 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2007-06-17

The sound of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 is just as fresh and clean as it was fourty (ohmygod!) years ago. Perfect for quiet evenings at home setting a classy mood at your next party.

4 out of 5 stars never gets old.......2007-05-14

I love this sound as much as I did originally. Some things that are solidly good stay that way. This album is one such.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderul.......2007-05-11

I love Brasil 66 songs so much, I almost can't review this collection. I think of riding in our car in summer when I was 9 years old, my elbow on the window, the warm breeze swirling around my mom and me. I think of hot summer days and warm evenings, everything in time moving slowly and easily. Possibly my favorite song of all time is Pretty World... lyrics, music, and style perfectly blend into a happy bubble of being young and in love and care free. "We'll hang a little sign that just says 'Paradise - Population Two'." And those voices, those glorious sultry voices. (Combine with Bossa Nova by Putumayo.)

3 out of 5 stars Great Album>>> Love it.......2007-02-21

This one bring me back to those days where my parents, aunts and uncles were playing it on LP. Great thing about it is I inherted their taste for great music. Althou the recording isnt as great sum of the remastered album, it still way better than playing LP.

5 out of 5 stars Great Brazilian Music.......2007-05-20

This CD provides you with some great tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. The songs take me away and place me in the heart of Brazil; the land of high soaring spirits. Would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-14

This is probably my favorite album of all time. I purchased it about 8 years ago and listen to it regularly. Can't understand a single lyric from it (a few excepted) but it remains one of the best I own. It is soulful, enchanting, exciting, and mysterious all at once.

If you are in the mood for something different that will grow on you, try this one. You won't regret it. I promise.

For something similar and equally intoxicating, try Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" or "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays". Both fantastic choices.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29

I enjoy Bossa Nova, beautiful music I have enjoyed all the cd's, I have purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Brasil.......2006-10-29

I play this CD frequently. Love the choices of artists and songs. Shows off the legacy of some of the artists as well. Would recommend it to the many fans of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Good Bossa Nova and MPB.......2004-04-13

I picked this up several years ago, and what a great disc this is. It's got some old classics on it and some pretty rare tracks too. At the time I picked it up, this was actually a series. There is another cd titled: "Samba Brasil" that has a similar cover, but is white and green.

The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation.

Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.

5 out of 5 stars Like a small box of expensive and delicious candies!.......2007-06-12

The sound is the best I've heard on this album, with rhyhmic percussions that make you want to move. Consider Day Tripper, the Beatles tune, where it's lead guitar lines are transferred to a latin-tinged mambo type rhythmic pattern. Many of their favorite songs are here: Mais Que Nada, The Joker, One Note Samba etc. There is much more presence heard on this album than ever before, with clean and spacious highs and lows. The only negative comment I have is that at only a bit over 25 minutes long with only 10 short cuts, this is like tasting a small box of expensive, classy and delicious Brazilian candies. Give me more! more! Why didn't they add some outakes? But......those 25 minutes are pure ecstasy.

5 out of 5 stars Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.......2007-05-13

I found this particular CD to be excellent to listen to. It reminds me very much of the mid 60's, the artist's singing is of high quality and the samba music sounds are great.

I recommend this cd to all people who love brasilian music.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa nova brilliance!.......2007-03-02

From the frenetic opening song 'Mais Que Nada,' to the comforting 'Berimbau,' this record is a surefire winner. If you're new to Mendes and his five million incarnations of 'Brasil (insert year here),' then this album just might be the perfect starter, as 'Mais' is no doubt his best-known hit single. Of course, you could always check out the NEW version of that song on his new 'Timeless' album with Black-Eyed Peas, but if you're not crazy about the funky urban reinvention (as am I), then by all means check this original one out. It'll melt all your worries away within seconds!

4 out of 5 stars Great sound & performance; but so-so packaging.......2007-01-22

I would submit this review for any and all of the recent A&M and Verve releases from the Brasil '66, beginning with Segio Mendes's debut disc (here) with the band. Unlike his contemporaries from the post-Bossa Nova wave in American jazz circles, Sergio Mendes carved a whole new genre, stylizing Brasilian sounds with jazz, and accesible popular tunes of the period. These works were greatly accentuated by the amazing vocal talents of Lani Hall, which breath new life in this pristine re-mastering. On another level, however, the running lengths of these discs are bothersome. At just over 30 minutes, it is hard to imagine why any record label could justify not issuing two-for-ones. At a retail cost of 5 or 6 bucks, there would be no room for complaint. But at $9 to $12, it seems unlikely these discs will be in print for very long.

Sergio Mendes 40th Anniversary concert at the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday, June 25, 2006 was a blast! To put a few words in a capsule that would describe that memorable evening, here goes . . .

Full-packed venue.
Tickets sold out.
Wonderful, alive and responsive audience.
Great performances of Sergio Mendes and his guests.
A night to remember.

It was a very memorable concert for I have met in person a musical legend while he was signing my CD booklets I brought with me. He's such an exceptional pianist, composer and a Bossa Nova icon as well. I've followed his musical career since Day One spanning four decades and have collected a good number of his most notable recordings of all-time. To me, the best part of the concert was the appearances of the equally talented husband and wife team of trumpeter, Herb Alpert, and the original Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 vocalist, Lani Hall. To the delight of the audience, they did a medley of my all-time favorites from this impressive collection "The Look of Love" (my friend and I as well as the audience were singing along) and "Fool On The Hill." Ditto with the performance by Joe Pizzulo of one of his hit songs "Never Gonna Let You Go." On this performance the audience started waving their cell phones (some with small flashlights) and you could see the lights illuminated from the phones - it was a beautiful sight - it's almost like seeing sparkling beads all over the place. The performances on "Mas Que Nada" and my very favorite song "Pretty World" were so nice, these are two of the seventeen tracks from this timeless and classic collection.

"Why don't we take a little piece of summer sky
Hang it on a tree
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For you and for me

And for the sun we'll take a lemon bright balloon
You can hold the string
Oh can't you see that little world of ours will be
The prettiest thing

We can gather rain enough for the stream
To hold our happy faces
When we want a breeze, I'll blow you a kiss or two
Take me in your arms and our little world
Will be the place of places
Nothing left to make but breakfast and love

We'll hang a little sign that says,
'Paradise: Population Two'
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For me and for you
For you, it's what I wanted to do, to do
To make a world..... with you."

Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 "Classics, Volume 18" is an absolute representation of typical Sergio Mendes music from the initial track "Mas Que Nada" to the final cut, "Alibis."

This is the kind of music you have enjoyed yesterday and will enjoy today, tomorrow and forever.

Timeless music.

4 out of 5 stars This 1987 retrospective is badly in need of a facelift........2005-12-29

If you did not grow up in the 1960's you just might wonder why so many baby boomers continue to be fixated on the music of that decade. The Billboard charts were filled with so many new and exciting sounds. When one thinks of 60's music the British Invasion and Motown immediately come to mind. But there were a number of other sounds that made an impact in the 1960's as well. Sergio Mendes brought his unique blend of Brazilian, jazz and American pop styles to America for the first time in 1966. His music was an instant sensation.
Although Sergio Mendes himself did not sing, he was the pianist, arranger, producer and musical director of this unique group. Led by vocalist Lani Hall, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 would produce some of the most innovative sounds of the late 60's. "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-86" features many of the highlights of the groups outstanding work during this period as well as a pair of hits from a later incarnation of the act in the mid 1980's.
To me "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-`86" was always a very strange concoction. Issued as part of A&M Records 25th anniversary "Classics" series in 1987, I was never very pleased with the way this one was done. If you are looking for the great 60's hits like "The Look of Love", "Scarborough Fair" and "The Fool On The Hill" then you will find them all here. Also included is the groups amazing 1969 hit "Pretty World" which is perhaps my favorite Sergio Mendes tune from that era as well as the groups very first hit single in America "Mas Que Nada". While the group experienced a fair amount of success on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart during this period, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 were a fixture on adult contemporary radio stations throughout the late 60's and early 70's. The group also sold a ton of albums. In fact, their debut LP simply entitled "Sergio Mendes and Brasil `66" remained on Billboards album charts for an amazing 126 weeks! You will find a number of selections from these LP's on this disc including "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Like A Lover" and the lovely "So Many Stars". Also included are a couple of fine instrumentals.
In 1983, Sergio Mendes re-emerged on A & M records with a brand new cast of charactors. The soulful single "Never Gonna Let You Go" featuring the splendid lead vocals of Joe Pizzulo and Leza Miller was one of the surprise hits of that year. Slightly more than a year later the wonderful pop single "Alibis" peaked at #29 on the Billboard pop chart. Both of these later singles are included on "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-'86" as well.
As I mentioned earlier I was never overly impressed with "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-86". The sound quality is OK but nothing more. The liner notes which were written some 19 years ago are dated and the packaging is drab. Of the 17 tracks in this collection I would question why 3 or 4 of them were included in the first place. Yet for all of these flaws this disc is still the best available Sergio Mendes collection released in the U.S. And that is too bad. In 1997, A&M's British unit released an updated 2 CD collection of Sergio Mendes. I am not particularly wild about that one either. Hopefully, Universal Records, who now controls the A&M catalogue in the U.S. will see fit to release an updated anthology of this remarkable act in the near future.

2 out of 5 stars Brazil'65 DIDN'T HAVE ANY HITS..........2006-11-18

It is fair to say that the material contained on this album is pleasing enough to listen to,and maybe,in Brazil, these sides were local hits(although this is doubtful),but the fact of the matter remains that it was not until Mendes put together Brazil'66 and put out albums on the A & M label that he actually had hit records...To say the these are"greatest hits" is to be deliberately deceptive...These are early sides, recorded when Mendes and his band were local artists..Sure,they sound similiar to his later, hit sides, but, afterall,it was essentially the same band with the same personel...So if you actually remember any of these obscure sides,or if you are a Mendes completist, this is something that you will want to own,HOWEVER,if you are looking for the artist at his peak then fast-forward to BRAZIL'66,and there you will find the real"greatest hits"...

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Memories.......2006-09-24

I was 15 when I discovered "Sergio Mendes & Brazil 65". I'd never heard of Sergio Mendes, but there was something about the cover that intrigued me. This was the beginning of a love afair with Brazilian music that has never faded over the years. I played the heck out of this record. I still have it, battered cover and all in my collection. After the dawn of CD's I often looked for it in record stores, but I never found it. What a jewel to discover here! (I only wish it had the original cover.) The American producer Creed Taylor produced some of the best recordings Antonio Carlos Jobim ever made. Taylor's lush strings, evocative woodwinds, and selection of top-notch jazz musicians were a perfect match for Jobim's spare, bossa nova-flavored compositions. This 1970 recording features Jobim backed by bassist Ron Carter, trombonist Urbie Green, flutist Hubert Law, and soprano saxophonist Joe Farrell. Several classics, such as "Children's Games," the lilting "Tereza My Love," and the two soft samba/swing renditions of Ary Barroso's "Brazil," are lovingly draped in the velvet arrangements of the then-young Brazilian sensation Eumir Deodato. Jobim's dry and achy vocals, along with his acoustic and rarely heard electric-piano playing, add the right sonic seasoning to this delightful disk. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2006-06-12

I'll add my praises of this disc to all the others. I fell totally in LOVE with Bossa Nova back in high school. I collected everything I could, from Best of Sergio Mendes - which is also very highly recommended to those who love this genre- to Joao Gilberto. In fact I made a trip to Brazil back in 1975 because I had to see this land where this sublime music came from. Anyway back to the disc. I had everything Jobim had recorded but this one intrigued me the most. It was his darkest and most complex. Worth adding to any collection of jazz, bossa, latin or anything else.

5 out of 5 stars Jobim.......2006-03-07

Listen to the samples and you will not need anyone's comments. "Wave", "Tide", "Stone flower" and the rest of the albums with Jobim's music will live for ever. Smooth, relaxing, stylish.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the most precious Jobim treasure.......2006-02-24

Another 5-star Jobim collaboration with producer Creed Taylor for his CTi label with arrangements by Deodato and a team of Jazz master musicians featuring Urbie Green and Hubert Laws.

Repertoire consists of Jobim material except for traditional Brazilian composer Ary Barroso's 'Brazil'.

Part of Jobim's compositions is music he composed for the film 'The Adventurers' also with arrangements by Deodato, issued in a very rare soundtrack album by Paramount label. Unfortunately, out of print.

Refer to the beautiful waltz 'Children's Games' which was also recorded by Elis Regina in her 'Elis & Tom' under the Portuguese title 'Chovendo na Roseira'.

A fundamental Jobim and Bossa Nova and Great Music album!

5 out of 5 stars Mere words just aren't enough..........2006-02-09

This is the greatest in bossa nova bar none and would be my pick of what music straight from Heaven sounds like. Antonio Carlos Jobim is the underrated genius of the genre and his recordings are beyond words for description. Both cuts of "Brazil" are priceless and the song "Sabia" is worth the price of this album alone. The new 2002 reissue has new liner nothes and a crystal-clear sound, giving them the greatest of sound quality for the full effect. Do yourself a favor and get this, it will send you to places you never thought possible.

4 out of 5 stars Stone Flower-Also Ran.......2006-02-01

While this is a very fine album, the tracks are not Jobim's best. These are prime examples of a great composer's lesser works, that produced by anyone else would be considered gems. The musicians on the album are all well known in their own right and the recording quality is excellent. A good album but not a great album

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of a 40-year-love affair with Mendes's sound.......2007-06-10

Besides being the first Sergio Mendes album in my collection, "Fool on the Hill" is probably the SECOND album that I ever bought with my hard-earned 1960's allowance.

That said, the release remains one of my favorite of both my childhood and adult years. With two hit covers (the title cut and "Scarborough Fair), along with scorchers like "Laia Ladaia (Reza"and "Upa, Neguinho," the album is just as exciting today as it was four decades ago. Though the latter tracks are sung in Spanish, that fact is not a deterrent to appreciating and enjoying them and others.

However, the best track is the ballad "When Summer Turns to Snow." This is an evocative tune and offers Mendes one of the few times he has taken the lead vocals...and he does a darn good job at it, too!

5 out of 5 stars another gem from the Brasil 66 collection...........2007-06-02

If you are looking for a great example of latin/fusion from the mid to late 1960s, I highly reccomend FOOL ON THE HILL, by Brasil 66. Brazilian bandleader Sergio Mendes led this band, made up of both American and Brazilian singers. This included Lani Hall, one of the most well-loved singers of samba and pop music (made famous through the popularity of this group). The result of this fusion of Brazilian and 1960s style lounge music? It's beautifully balanced with East meets West sensiblity. If you haven't heard their take on The Beatles' "Fool on the Hill," then you don't know what you're missing. What's more, "Scarborough Fair" (a traditional song made famous by Simon & Garfunkel) is just beautiful here, with swaying rhythms (reminiscent of Rio De Janeiro on a hazy, lazy afternoon). There are some other songs, in Portuguese, but the group is really great in both languages!

4 out of 5 stars Sergio Mendez aficionados.......2007-04-05

Fool on the Hill by Sergio Mendes/Brazil 66, is a delectable collection of the groups finest offerings. The arrangements, vocals and sheer artistry of the group define one of the top Brazilian artists of our time. Simply a pleasure !

5 out of 5 stars Sergio Mendes is a genius.......2006-09-05

It's nice for Sergio Mendes to have all this attention again because of the revamped Mas Que Nada, but I think there will be little room for discussion when you compare it to the brilliant original, which isn't polluted by obnoxious rapping. His whole Brazil '66-discography is amazing: this is timeless, sweet, slightly exotic music that's upbeat with a hint of melancholy. So the same goes for this great record, which leans on two very good covers, but the originals are what's special here. The perfect blend between 60's pop and bossanova, sweet but not sappy, cheerful but not annoying, and always this sweet, glowing, after-summer vibe. He's the man.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth as Silk.......2006-05-16

I recently decided I have been buying too much new music on CDs, and not listening to my large collection of great music on LPs. One of the first LPs on my platter (for the first time in years) was this great outting by Brazil 66. I couldn't believe how exciting, timeless, and classy (and even sexy) this music is. The singing and the instrumentation blend perfectly. Some of the rhythms get complex, yet they come off as smooth as silk in the hands of these great musicians. If you still don't know this music, this would be a great starting place. It is definitely one of their best. Also, though tame by today's standards, the cover of the LP once unfolded (and I presume the CD) is interesting--to say the least. I might also add that the range of sound in the music of Brazil 66 really shows off a good stereo system.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Accidental Discovery!.......2007-07-05

As an avid jazz-samba fan from the era of those Getz/Gilberto/Jobim (etc.) collaborations, I am stunned to imagine -and embarrassed to admit that I did not know of Elis Regina before recently stumbling by accident into these extraordinary reviews on the Amazon site. The obvious question was, "Could anything be as good as these people say?!!" The answer is YES! For starters, the magic of this beautiful CD thoroughly compares to that experienced when I first heared the other albums referenced above, and then some! Not at all because these selections display great musical innovation or complexity within this genre; -they don't, and that is what makes these performances so delightful from start to finish. That is, this is music which "sings", and goes straight to the heart of the listener. The whole group sound like they are enjoying themselves enormously during the sessions, and I still find myself unable to sit still when this album is on! Rather, the compulsion to tap one's toes, or to rise and start dancing (with or without partner available) is simply irrepressible! Small wonder, therefore, that the polite and cool-tempered Swedes who observed these recording sessions were spellbound, or so it seems, by the spectacle of these Brazilians having so much fun while "working"! For Elis Regina, she is everything the other reviewers say, and she grows on me increasingly with each new listening; her loss at such a young age is forever saddening and confounding to me. Very thankfully, however, the recording engineers have captured and preserved the moment for us magnificently with this album. I am also very pleased, as well, to be introduced to the music of Toots Thielemans, who blends into this group with absolute perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Elis is a gift from God!.......2006-08-26

Elis is my one and only singer! I am sorry to say this, but Elis does not sing, SHE HUMILIATES THE REST! As a Brazilian I am very proud of her singing so many wonderful Brazilian songs and share them with the world. Thank you, Elis! I love you!

5 out of 5 stars Two giant musicians !.......2004-12-05

Two legends : two unforgettable names for the musical story of Brazil .
Toots Thielemans is an extarordinary musician . His wide scope has allowd him to face one of the widest spectre of the music .
In this famous recording dated from 1969 Elis Regina (the divine , unforgettable and supreme brazilian song goddess and one of most inspired female singers ever) joined theor gifts to giva the world a tresure of thousand carats .
Canto de Ossanha, Aquarela de Brazil , O barquinho and Wave are among the best tracks of this spectacular and glorious CD . The only complaint -if I may- is the shortness of this album . Thought and recorded according the LP laws: Twelve tracks and that's all . I have the hidden hope someone finds records not available before or recording sessions never released before to get the chance to enjoy the craft of this fantastic combination .
Acquire this CD and get close to the world of this giant couple .

5 out of 5 stars Stunning! A Six Star Tour De Force!!!.......2004-05-19

On a scale of 1 to 5, "Aquarela Do Brasil" is a SIX!! One of the great MPB performances of all time, with Toots Thielemans adding soaring beautiful harmonica/guitar solos between some truly amazing vocals by Elis Regina. Plus Toots gives three solid solo performances, including an Elis tribute.

Recorded in 1969, during a "howling snowstorm" in Stockholm Sweden of all places, the Brazilian Super-Diva, Elis Regina, and the acclaimed jazz master, Toots Thielemans, conjured up a steaming, mid-summer Brazilian beach in the studio. Elis is on fire throughout and clearly having alot of fun! Her musical quintet, Elis Cinco, is brilliant and audibly enthusiastic. Singing with a wide range of emotions and tossing off gymnastic phrases with ease, Elis is incredible! She wields her voice like a knief, cutting quickly and deeply into each song. Toots is equally brilliant and the entire ensemble plays like old musical friends. I speak no Portuguese but this music is as clear as a crystal.

Normally I pick out a "Piece D'Resistance" in every CD, but this CD is so uniformly brilliant that there are too many outstanding performances by both artists to pick one. The sensuous, sultry "Barquinho" (Little Boat) is cast as an overpowering ballad performance that will slow your breathing. "Voce", the tongue twisting "Corrida de Jangada", and the sizzling "Wave" (with Elis' patented "sozinho" Afro-Brazilian tagline at the end) are new again. She totally personalizes "Aquarela Do Brasil" using the 'bridge' only and then adds the batucada "Nega do Cabelo Duro" to it, infusing it with humor and the sound of "crickets": very unique performance. And the octave-jumping tour de force of "Cantu de Ossanha" is spine-tingling great singing like no one else can do it.

I bought this CD primarily out of curiosity about the combination of Toots & Elis. I had recently bought the excellent "Chez Toots" CD and noticed this CD in his discography. I popped it in the CD player and wandered away. The next morning the CD player woke me up with "Wave" and I was captivated and totally amazed for the next hour. As a jazz, classical, and pop music fan, I KNOW singers and this singer was someone very, very special. She understood nuance, emotion, improvisation, the blues (ok, "saudade", if you must), how to deliver a knockout punch and leave us wanting more. It's no wonder they called her 'The Hurricane'. Now I'm collecting more Elis recordings and have just purchased the self-titled first CD cut by her multiple Grammy-winning daughter, "Maria Rita". With this CD, Elis (over twenty years after her tragic accidental death) has stolen my musical heart. She ranks in the company of the greatest singers ever: Ella, Sarah, Maria Callas, Judy, and LadyDay. I think she realized she was really a jazz singer at heart interpreting MBP. Believe me, this CD should be required listening for ALL music fans who love GREAT MUSIC. Definitely, a SIX !

Snowstorm? What snowstorm? LOL

5 out of 5 stars Pure Fire - Elis Regina ensemble with Toots on harmonica.......2003-05-18

One of the outstanding Elis Regina's characteristics as a singer was not only her quality as a vocal master. She also knew very well how to choose her musicians and arrangers.

And she also had all great Brazilian musicians at her keep. They used to say it was very hard to work under her top parameters but the result was prestige. Many American songbirds became famous on this aspect - this reminds me of Carmen McRae and Betty Carter - and like them, Elis Regina always brought luck to all musicians and composers she recorded with.

This album counted on her trio in 1969, leaded by pianist and composer Antonio Adolfo. This same trio made her European tour in 1969 and recorded this album with Toots Thielemens in Sweden.

Half the program consists of instrumentals with the trio plus Toots. Very Great!

5 out of 5 stars Beauty.......2007-02-06

Joao Gilberto (b. 1931) first came on to the scene with his debut album of 1958 titled "Chega de Saudade", introducing a new style of jazz samba called bossa nova. Gilberto is credited as the innovator of the bossa nova sound that sprung to life out of Brazil. We all likely own the 1965 classic Getz/Gilberto album, featuring his then wife Astrud on vocals along with Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

This album is good to own because you get two albums for the price of one, Gilberto's "Amoroso" (1976) and "Brasil" (1981). These albums showcase Joao in his prime, vibrant and full of life. "Brasil" is a much more accessible album to listen to than the previous selection, and showcases fellow Brazilian musicians Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. What an album to relax to and forget about life.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova rocks.......2006-03-24

This cd was the first of many brazilian bossa novas I've bought. I heard the Girl from Ipanema on a complilation jazz cd and was hooked then. I don't aggree w/ the above reviewers who don't like the orchestral arrangements? Are you nuts? This album is fantastic! Its actually two albums, and I love every song. I grew up listening to mostly r/b and this style is second only to that for me.
I had never heard music so beautiful as in (portueguese'.) One of my professors suggested that I give a listen to international music, boy was she right.
I have migraines so I put on Joao/Astrud/Stan Getz to relax and release the pain. They are all so soothing and enjoyable. I also suggest you get" Getz/Gilberto: live at Carnegie Hall" Astrud appears on it as well. Antonio Carlos Jobim: Wave, "Brazilian Romance" all by Verve records.

4 out of 5 stars A masterpiece PLUS a great album.......2004-07-10

As many reviewers have said, tracks 9-14 are worth the price of the album. These tracks are simply astonishing. I first heard three or four of them over the internet and on various mix CDs that my friends had. I was drawn to "Aquarela do Brasil" and "Disse Alguem" especially, and you could tell that it was the same session. I told myself I had to find such an album. (You see Mr. Record Company, many file sharers do go out and buy CDs!)

Wasn't I suprised to find the Brasil album (tracks 9-14) together with Amoroso (1-8). Maybe I'm a little more used to sappy strings than some other people, but they don't bother me so much. Heck, as long as I can hear Joao's voz e violao, I'm a happy man.

If the somewhat negative reviews of the first half of the CD are making some of you hesitant to purchase this wonderful music, I need only remind you that some people buy a disc for only one song. Well, here you're gonna find six wonderful ones for sure, and maybe a few more, depending on your taste in strings.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Joao Gilberto Singing.......2004-05-22

I've heard that Mr. Gilberto, being very shy and a little strange, would not go into the studio for Amoroso, so they went to his house to record and he sang and played in his pajamas. Then Claus came along and added the quite wonderful arrangements afterwards. Perhaps that explains the slight out of synch feel.

But when all is said and done there is no other like Joao Gilberto. Joao liked Fred Astaire. Another one of a kind. If you have not heard Amoroso go get it! In 1977 Joao gave a one man show at the Roxy, Sunset Strip plugging Amoroso. Two sets, two days. After the first set the management was begging the audiance to stay free for the second. (Wouldn't that be nice today.) On all four sets Joao's first encore was S'Wonderful "that you should care for me." He sang O Pato for me. How he gets to the "heart of the matter." What more?

5 out of 5 stars "Brasil" is essential.......2004-01-14

This CD includes two of João Gilberto's albums: Amoroso (1977) on tracks 1-8, and the tiny Brasil (1981) from 9-14. I could assign this CD 5 stars simply in virtue of the second part; it is worth getting the whole CD just for those 6 tracks.

I agree with the opinion below that Claus Ogerman's orchestral arrangements really do a disservice to Amoroso. To my ear, having heard many other of Gilberto's recordings, Ogerman just doesn't "get it"; his arrangements sometimes seem to me to undermine Gilberto's way of developing the song. For me the most annoying example is comparing "Zingaro" in this album with the live version in Gilberto's live Montreux CD (there it's titled "Retrato em Branco e Preto"). In the live version, João's interpretation builds up a lot of tension in the verses; in the studio version, Ogerman's arrangements utterly destroy this tension. Really, the only song where I think the orchestral arrangements adds anything is "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin". I my João Gilberto stars scale, Amoroso gets three stars (which translates into about four stars in my lesser artists scale).

The second album included in the CD, Brasil, is a whole another story. This has got to be some of the gentlest and most delightful music ever recorded. On this album Gilberto is accompanied by fellow Brazilian stars Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Maria Bethania. This album is very fundamentally about the contrast between the voices; the most common arrangement is to have them take turns in singing the verses of the song one after the other, almost impossibly softly, each with their own subtly different phrasing. In the context of this incredibly quiet album, the phrasing differences stand out quite dramatically for those who listen for them. One really gets to hear these familiar people's voices in a new way by juxtaposing them. (I can imagine, however, that familiarity with the artists helps in appreciating this album.)

5 out of 5 stars Lush and exotic.......2007-07-12

I have yet to hear a Manhattan Transfer CD that I haven't liked. So far, "Swing" is my favorite, but "Brasil" is right up there as well. It's a gorgeous fusion of vocalese jazz and Latin music that just pours out smooth as rain on the forest.

This is also a very socially conscious CD. "Aqua" talks about the circle of life of water and for those who understand the lifecycle of the jungle, this is a critical element.

"Metropolis" which is probably my favorite of the collection is a stark picture of Brazillian urbanization.

"Hear the Voices" following is about the spiritus faith of Brazil. It doesn't precisely take me to the ceremony, but it's a decent intro.

"Notes from the Underground" is the final cut and ends the CD on a hopeful note. There's still a chance to save the beauty of the world and ourselves as long as we all live.

Every time I hear this CD, I hear more delicately woven elements of Brazillian cultures. In it's own right, "Brasil" creates its own delicate eco-system and a beautiful picture.

I first tuned into MT's Brasil while touring as a dancer throughout France when the album was initially released in the late 80s. It happened to be a very wet tour; but wetness served as an appropriate background for the wonderful blend of sounds found in this music. I'm finally getting it on CD. Yes, Soul Food to Go!!

The title of this album is 'Brazil'. I'm not trying to insult your intelegence but I want to highlight the fact that this album is designed to bring the wonderful music of Brazil to the masses. This it does to a certain extent, however I do feel that it should be mentioned that you will not hear Brazillian music in the traditional sense.
The Manhattan Transfer have, once again, provided us with a gem of an album which introduces us to a fusion of jazz and world music. This is combined with a unique strain of 'listenability' to which we have become acustomed to from their music. We have the elements of South American music combined with modern jazz harmony and rhythm. The music of the great brazilian composer Djawan I find is perhaps the most successful on the album - especially the first track 'Soul Food To Go'. This album is well worth a buy - try it, you might like it!

5 out of 5 stars The best vocalese record ever !.......2002-06-07

Here it is. The summum, the perfection, the best achievement in vocalese music.
Recipe? Two drops of the best voices (Manhattan Transfer), and a few grams of the best brazilian songwriter (Djawan). Result: amazing, hard to believe. Just listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Yes want somemore!.......2000-11-14

Agree whole-heartedly that this is definitely one of MT's best. It has a certain pizzazz & unique stamp to it. Latin is always both Cool & Hot. Yep, "Capim" is also my favourite but I also love "So you say". Forrest conservationists must definitely approve of this album. It's just got everything going for it hasn't it ? Just inspiring ... it recharges me everytime!
