"Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. Together this talented trio--with occasional accompaniment by percussionist Marcos Suzano, guitarist Luiz Brasil, vocalist Ed Motta, and bassist Zeca Assumpçao--beautifully exposes the French influences of Satie, Ravel, and Chopin in Jobim's music. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Celestial music - .......2007-05-07

My Profile: 43 yo - no music qualifications whatsoever-

I got this fine cd last year in my first time in Buenos Aires.. though my trip was for widenning my musical horizons.. what can I said that has not been adequately commented by more knowledable reviewers than I?.. the music is serene, celestial, non-strident...he piano, the cello and that voice!! you know you are prividledged in life to have a chance to comtemplate on this type of beauty... whatever scars we have in the soul and body, take a moment to soothe yourself..

5 out of 5 stars Gentle Magic to Free Your Soul.......2007-03-28

I just love love love this CD. Everything about it is so artfully rendered, it takes my soul away to gently float free in a most beautiful place. Ms. Morelenbaun has a voice that, of all female vocals in the world, is often my most favorite to hear. Virtually no vibrato, just clean and clear exquisite and delicate classic femininity. Mr. Morelenbaum, Mr. Sakamoto and all supporting musicians provide the most sensitively interwoven instrumental skills that there could ever be; they perfectly ride, complement and contribute to the magical musical moment that is always now, in flowing pieces such as these. Of course, the ineffably beautiful heart and soul of the basic songs to start with are indispensible (thank you now and forever, o-most revered JC Jobim!). Honestly, this CD places in my top 10 of all time, especially now, in my more relaxed and gentle mature years... ;)

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Best Music ever!.......2007-02-03

I came by the Morelenbaums by 'A Day in New york'. It was love at first
sound. I checked out to see if anything else was available. I found 'Casa'
and immediately ordered it. It has been in my CD player since I got it.
This from a Classical music buff and a college music degree. This music
defies description (I do like bossa nova and Jobim especially). This group is so together, it sounds like the members know exactly what each
other is thinking. It is all so right that it appears precision and class
like this is not possible. Paula's voice has a simple (without vibrato) beauty that is mesmerizing. The arrangements are exquisite. The Cello and piano never over-do and the whole is something you must hear to believe. I can only add to this - GET IT!!

5 out of 5 stars jazzman.......2007-01-17

Absolutely fabulous renditions of Jobim. Paula's voice is so pure and
gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the
pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly
obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese
enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that
there is a musical heaven on earth. So sophistocated, cool, and gentle.
I eagerly await their next release. 5 million stars.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing...........2006-01-16

So much to say about this wonderful recording. As I write this, there are 27 reviews posted for Casa and not one of them is less than 4 stars, with the vast majority as 5 stars. That speaks volumes in itself. But the quality of the words and the thought behind them is truly a tribute to Jobim. If we were all lucky enough to have him with us now, the words of these reviews would surely either make him smile or bring tears of joy to his eyes. This truly is music that soothes...reflects...and makes us all appreciate either finding it or being introduced to it by someone. Introduce only your best friends to this, those that would appreciate it as much as you and I do.

5 out of 5 stars Check Him Out!.......2006-07-15

I was exposed to Hermeto Pascoal's "Mundo Verde Esperança" while taking a class on Global Jazz. His music immediately appealed to me, not because I "got it", but because I had a reference for it. Sonically, his music reminded me of some of my favorite 70's fusion work. Bill Bruford's early solo material circa "Master Strokes" came to mind, as did some of Gentle Giant's instrumental work, but most strongly the reference I had (and still have) for Mundo Verde Esperança was Frank Zappa's instrumental work from the 70's.

Hermeto's compositional use of angularly extended melodies, his comfort with speech-related rhythms, and his overall choice of instrumentation brought to mind Zappa's work on "Hot Rats", "Waka/Jawaka", and "The Grand Wazoo". However, this similarity does not seem referential, but coincidental. While much can be found on the internet about Hermeto, for the limited purposes of an initial Amazon review, I find his formative years particularly compelling. In particular, it is interesting to consider the way that his path (which in some ways was diametrically opposite to Zappa's) came to produce such an immediately recognizable similarity.

Hermeto showed prodigious strength as a musician very early. His father exposed him to music on the 8-button accordion, at which he immediately excelled. However, his most important musical influences were even less formal. During the day, when most of his family was working in the sun, his albino condition forced him to take shade. To occupy himself during this time, he would experiment with found objects, creating new musical instruments to musically dialogue with his environment. The sounds of nature proved to be a profound influence on him, and he came to view all sounds as inherently musical. This perspective would affect his music as he continued his training, learning to formally read and write music later in life. Eventually, he evolved into a compelling and respected composer and multi-instrumentalist.

This self-directed and organic musical pedagogy that was closely tied to the sounds of nature lies in direct opposition to Zappa's distinctively Western technologically-based evolution. However, the end results yield compelling post-modern similarities. The "found" objects that influenced Zappas were pieces of recorded tape, whether it was speech (Lumpy Gravy) or the xenochronic interactions of unrelated musical events (Jazz From Hell).

Hermeto's found objects include teakettles played with tuba mouthpieces, squeak toys, and water-filled soda bottles. In addition, his melodic sense is informed by more traditional Brazilian music styles like the Choro. His angular, meandering, focused conception of melody and rhythm comes from these experiences. However, despite this disparity of experience, the sonic similarities he shares with to Zappa is compelling, even though they probably had little or maybe even no contact with each other. In both cases, tradition, environment, and "modernity" collided to create something that did not comfortably align itself with any of those narratives.

The Lowdown: While it is highly likely that many U.S. listeners are not familiar with Hermeto, this does not in any way reflect the vision and talent of this amazing musician. If you are a fan of 70s prog-jazz-fusion, you should absolutely check out this recording. His fascinating background is worth a web search. Hermeto has made many recordings, but this one is the easiest to acquire and is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Of course.......2006-05-10

I wouldn't expect anything less than something brilliant from Hermeto, especially after such a long recording drought. He is one of the greatest musical geniuses of the past century, capable of vast creative exploration while maintaining a level of accessability that many great creative musicians do not attempt. Of course this album is amazing, I would expect nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars Hermeto Pascoal-the legacy continues.......2004-08-23

This 2002 release was the first from Hermeto's 'Grupo' after a 10 year recording hiatus. The Grupo here is Hermeto, Fabio Pascoal (perc), Alexandre Marques (piano), Itiberê Zwarg (bass), Marcio Bahia (drums), and Vinícius Dorin (sax/flute). Also featured are members of Itiberê's 'Orquestra Família'(their first recording 'Pedra do Espia' is available here at Amazon), delivering incredible performances of fourteen tunes, each named for one of Pascoal's grandchildren.
The music here is fresh, challenging, and inspiring; everything you would expect from 'O Bruxo'. The musicianship is virtuostic; especially from the 'Orquestra' members, none of whom is over 25 years of age! This, along with all the great musicians to have passed through Hermeto's tutelage, is Hermeto's legacy; his 'Universal Music' will live and grow forever.
A must for any Hermeto collection; and required listening for jazz fans who want to discover contemporary Brazilian improvised music.

This is Lisa's seventh album. This outstanding recording includes appearances by Tom Jobim, Mario Adnet, Sivuca, Danilo Caymmi, and Paulo Jobim. The songs on this album range from beautiful quiet arrangements for voice and guitar like "Um Abraço No Joao" to fun up-tempo samba arrangements like "Samba da Esperança". Antonio Carlos Jobim sings with Lisa and plays piano on the lovely song "Estrada Branca". Also displayed is some wonderful clarinet work by the famous Brazilian clarinet player Paulo Moura on "A Gafieira".

I've been listening to this CD for many years and it only gets better with time. Pour a glass of really good cab that has great depth, sit back and take 30 minutes to really enjoy ana and the experience of the very best listening you will ever find.

Better yet, share her with a friend....

The recording (I have the gold version) and performance are first rate. I also own her 'Amazonia' (which I like very much) and believe this is a superior performance. The selections are mostly laid-back with spare instrumentation....and oh...that chesky sound! Why don't more recording studios capture sound like this? These tunes have a different flair from the popular Jobim output....but they are masterfully and tastefully done. Tom would be proud.
