As a member of the acclaimed Animal Collective, Noah Lennox (a.k.a. Panda Bear) has for years been making music that mixes experimental structures with a pure '60s pop sensibility. On his second solo album of looped and layered experimental post-pop, he shows considerable skill in crafting songs that retain the essence of psychedelia while having been crafted with loop-based home recording methods. The album's finest moment has to be "Bros," a slowly percolating and unapologetically lovely twelve-and-a-half-minute song. Like Brian Wilson lost in a K-hole, gorgeous harmonies soaked in echo bump up against each other until they reach a rhythmic, fascinating crescendo. Elsewhere, Panda Bear's music tends toward the same effect a tad too much, often without the same transcendent quality. Person Pitch has fabulous moments aplenty, though (as with Captain Beefheart's 1968 Strictly Personal) one does wish that fewer reverb-soaked vocals were used, or that they were used even further, pushed into complete abstract dissociation. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Animal Collective member Panda Bear (a.k.a. Noah Lennox) boldly returns with his long-awaited third solo record Person Pitch. Years in the making, Person Pitch marks a dramatic departure from Panda Bear's previous solo record Young Prayer. The acoustic instruments of Young Prayer have been replaced with samplers and electronics.

Fusing Panda's dramatic life changes over the past few years (marriage, moving to Lisbon, becoming a father) with his ever-increasing sonic palette (standouts include Caetano Veloso, Berlin Techno, Scott Walker, and Kylie Minogue), Person Pitch is suffused with the kind of feel good modern toe-tapping pop that seems harder and harder to find these days.

Paw Tracks feels that the passing of time will show Panda Bear's Person Pitch sitting alongside the great solo albums of Paul McCartney, George Michael, and Ghostface Killah. Luckily we don't have to wait.

4 out of 5 stars honesty.......2007-07-11

The hype for Person Pitch is ablaze and acclaim for Panda Bear's follow up to the underrated Young Prayer now carries more words than most modern novels. Regardless, it is up to you to defend yourself from being won over by the majority and make sure your opinion of Person Pitch is yours. You know, you don't have to love everything any Animal Collective member produces. Panda Bear's third album sees him trading in the eternal acoustic strumming of previous albums to the knobs of a mixer. Spanning seven tracks of various length Person Pitch is one of the most deservedly (however overplayed the comparison is) labeled Brian-Wilson-influenced album to come out of the Paw Tracks camp. Using the genuinely beautiful harmonies that defined his influences along with slowly evolving repetitious samples Panda Bear has molded seven extended pop songs. The effortless nature and drowsy comfort these songs embody somehow maintain an attention span but not too much more. There is nothing overtly groundbreaking here nor is there a particularly evocative melody climactic experience; just pleasantness. So, while enjoyable and recommended, for the over-hyped explorer: don't expect the mind-blowing power Sung Tongs.

4 out of 5 stars 'Person Pitch' by Panda Bear.......2007-06-07

'Person Pitch' lays down sonic planes a mite distanced from its verbal units: either could change a bit, the other has already consented. This in comparison to 'Sung Tongs' and 'Feels,' where on tracks with verbal presence these parts are one through distention. (Yorke ran into a similar problem when his 'Eraser' was compared to other Radiohead stuff.) The first exception on 'PP' is the lead track 'Comfy in Nautica,' where the sonic is sparse enough to keep from planing, and so dovetails in flight with Panda's voice. His vocals deserve a dove's tail for the entire album.

5 out of 5 stars Person Pitch.......2007-06-07

Panda Bear's Person Pitch is proof positive why it's necessary for Animal Collective to remain a "collective" rather than a permanent band: the members just have too many ideas. Granted, they leapfrogged from style to style on each of their albums anyway, but Animal Collective drummer Panda Bear's latest sounds like the work of one man making music on his own terms, and reflects his own current state of mind. See, Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) just moved to ultra-laid-back Lisbon, and sure enough, Person Pitch sounds like the Beach Boys' California love filtered through a strange exoticism that's easy to associate with a place like Portugal. It retains Animal Collective's ebullient, idealistic attitude, but it's more low-key and atmospheric: quiet drum machines and plinked instruments awash in a psychedelic cloud. And, as you would expect from an animal in the Collective, the vocals are treated in wonderfully creative ways; the fact that Panda Bear sounds uncannily like Brian Wilson is just a really big bonus.

2 out of 5 stars Not for me........2007-06-06

Let me first say that I have a lot of respect for this guy. I can see that a lot of people love his music, and he does have some truly unique and neat music, but I guess this album's not for me. I'm not finding the beauty, which is pretty disappointing for me. I'll give it another shot another day, but I'm really not liking this too much. Something about his sound doesn't appeal to me.
Again, I do have tons of respect for this artist, as Animal Collective are brilliant, but this just isn't for me.

4 out of 5 stars COPYCAT AGENDA.......2007-06-03

If you like this music, then you'll certainly like the band 'Russian Futurist', which is where I believe "Noah" aka "Panda Bear" got either his inspiration from, or maybe copied from... Both bands sound almost identical.. Regardless, Panda Bear sounds very good and has that daydream music appeal...

By all indications, Ricky Martin's Unplugged opus should be an easy, effortless sell. The charismatic singer is in fine vocal form, backed by a tight band. He makes some interesting set list selections ("Gracias Por Pensar En Mi," "Asignatura Pendiente"). But Martin is also coming off 2005's commercially disappointing Life, which didn't even reach gold status (sales of 500,000 copies). That's a long way down from his Loca peak. It gives Unplugged, then, the whiff of an artist grasping for old glories. Martin was wise to include standouts "Perdido Sin Ti" and "Vuelve," which still shimmer with a lush pop sheen. Both are from 1998's Vuelve disc, still Martin's strongest effort to date. But new tracks "Con Tu Nombre," "Tu Recuerdo," and "Pegate" come off like unremarkable rehashes of past hits. Instead of looking back, this talented singer should be searching for real ways to reinvent his sound and to make his music exciting again. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Completely ANGELIC.......2007-06-17

If you thought you loved Ricky Martin you have NOT lived until you have heard this album. I love his music and I find it takes me back to Puerto Rico when I listen to him but this album not only takes me back there it TRANSPORTS me to the heart of Viejo San Juan. This album is "el mar que de podentro".

To hear a track like "Maria" knocked down about 25 notches from that crazy energetic totally loveable regular release and hear Ricky enjoying every sylable of the song is a JOY to my ears. I can hear in his voice that he is performing for the love of performing not for the want of fame or fortune. He is there because he wants to sing, hands down he loves what he does and well, he's one of the BEST at what he does! I also fell in love with "Perdido Sin Ti" on the "La Historia" album and it has a personal significance in my life but this live version is nothing short of an Angel sining to my heart.

He is performing on stage with Tommy Torres who has to be one of the quintesential Puerto Rican artists alive today and they are jamming. Anyone who understands what "Jam" means you will WANT to hear this album.

If you were hesitant to buy, hesitate NO more, RUN and buy this album I can guarantee that you will not be disapointed. If you are, well you aren't a true RMMII fan....

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous artistry.......2007-06-06

Ricky reveals incredible depth, sincerity, and artistry in this production. An unplugged should speak to the audience in an intimate manner and Ricky has definitely achieved a unique level of expressiveness that sips through every verse and every commentary from the artist. I am happy and proud to see Ricky shine brighter than ever both as an acclaimed artist, entertainer, and philanthropist.

GOZALO!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-09

This is a phenomenal cd that I truly enjoy listenig to. The acoustic format lends such a different dimension to his music and proves that good music does not need heavy and zealous production to be brilliant -- it shines on its own merit. He is in fine voice and I believe this cd emphasizes that Ricky is not a flash-in-the-pan product of music industry sharks out to capitalize on his good looks and charisma. With nothing to hide behind, an acoustic venue such as this shows an artist's true talent, for good or bad. Ricky's talent speaks for itself here and proves him to be the true musician and artist he has never received proper credit for.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-06-09

The more I listen to this group, the more I want to hear. They do what I call stock-rock, music that doesn't need to be focused on, but works really well in the back ground while house cleaning or taking the half hour drive to work or home. Good vocals, good musicians and not a "bomb" on the whole disc.

5 out of 5 stars Really talented guys........2007-02-23

This guys from Mexicali are back with this, their second album. I found it better than their first self-titled that was really good. And I can also feel a more mature group and better production. But the only thing missing for me on this album, is a cacthy song as the Top 20 hit "QUE VIDA LA MIA". The song that can be compared to that one is "NO SE PORQUE TE VAS" a really great song. In overall "SECUENCIA" follows the same roots of "REIK" which is for the ones who don't know much about Reik. A mix between pop and R&B, but they also sometimes touch rock like is the case of "SIN CONOCERTE" or "DE QUE SIRVE" but it's soft rock don't imagine something like AC/DC or Guns and Roses. The first single "IVIERNO" became a hit all over Latin America and reached #2 on Billboard's Latin Pop Airplay but even though they have success in Mexico and Latin America I wonder why they aren't bigger because they have all it takes. Talent, good lyrics and the vocalist has a very good voice.
Check the songs "SABES", "SIN CONOCERTE", "INVIERNO", "NO SE PORQUE TE VAS" and "VIVO EN SUEÑOS". Personally my favorite songs are "NO SE PORQUE TE VAS", "INVIERNO" and "ME DUELE AMARTE".

5 out of 5 stars JESUS HAS A GREAT VOICE!!!!!.......2007-01-31

I gotta say that Jesus' voice is just incredibly great!
this cd is really good!!! you wont be disappointed if you get it. "SABES" is the best Reik song, I just can't explain how incredible this song is so buy the cd so you can understand what im talking about!

5 out of 5 stars Reik, an excellent young band.......2007-01-19

This young Mexican band surprised me ! I discovered "Invierno" in holiday far away from home and the first thing I did back, was connecting on Amazon.com to buy the album (from France, difficult to buy young latino artists). This album is really really excellent. Voice (thank you Jesus N. for your voice !) and music bring you in another world. So, if you want to have a good time... buy it !!!

5 out of 5 stars Simplemente Excelente.......2006-12-30

Album Description

In the midst of 2002, with much of his attention focused on his work with the Brooklyn-based ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, PANDA BEAR stepped aside to a more intimate space to reflect upon the death of his father. The resulting Young Prayer, often coming much closer to classical composition than to the noise/pop experimentations of the ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, is a collection of beautifully personal and introspective songs. Young Prayer, recorded in Panda Bear's childhood home by ANIMAL COLLECTIVE member DEAKIN and further produced by the mysterious ANIMAL COLLECTIVE brothers known as COME WINTER, guarantees a listening experience as interesting as any ANIMAL COLLECTIVE release thus far. A truly soulful album, Young Prayer is both sonically gorgeous and spiritually uplifting.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not what you'd expect...........2006-02-23

...which shouldn't be surprising coming from the frontman of a band that consistently defies expectation. And yet it is surprising in the worst way possible--instead of an initial interest and exhilaration, the first time listening to Panda Bear's solo effort is...well...underwhelming. Yet, true to form, the music of this unique talent grows on you, expands inside of you, and eventually wins your respect if, of course, you can stomach a steep (and lengthy) learning curve.

Sung Tongs and Feels are throbbing mashes of pure musical joy...Young Prayer is a whisper in comparison. If Animal Collective is like musically making love, Young Prayer is the afterglow.

4 out of 5 stars introspective album from Animal Collective member.......2005-12-05

The first time that I listened to Young Prayer, I felt a bit underwhelmed. I'd gotten so used to anything related to the Animal Collective being so off-the-wall that the directness of this short 10-track release took awhile to sink in. Although there are tracks on the release that are a bit more layered, it's easily the most intimate and stripped-down thing that member of the Animal Collective have been involved in.

Probably the closest reference point to this release is the Campfire Songs effort that the group put out on the Catsupplate Record label a couple years back. Young Prayer breaths even more than that disc, though, as it most often finds Noah Lennox (aka Panda Bear) with just himself and an acoustic guitar (and some effects). Written to reflect upon the death of his father, the 10 tracks are given no names and even the vocals are nearly completely indiscernable. In freeing itself of all of the above trappings, the release opens itself up into an almost ritualistic territory.

The opening track finds Lennox singing higher and higher over strummed bursts of guitars that glint with a touch of electronics for punctuation at times while the third track is a short and lovely pairing of deft guitar and piano that feels too short at only a minute long. The centerpoint of the album also finds it at its most upbeat as looped vocal phrases move in a round while clapping and a 4/4 thump keep the track folding in on itself.

As mentioned above, the release is very sparse, but it most often works in favor. In the sixth track, soft vocals and guitars drift in and out as a drum kit is flirted with and subtle electronics float to the surface once as a lovely surprise. Although there is a good amount of variety on the release, it does drag a smidge in places. The five-plus minute high vocals/strummed guitar fourth track sounds similar to many other tracks on the release, but fails to really move in any different directions. If you're a fan of work by the Animal Collective, you'll probably want to check this out, but keep in mind that you'll need a little patience. Fans of experimental/improv folk should also hunt it down.

(from almost cool music reviews)

5 out of 5 stars The Album Title Says It All.......2005-07-30

Panda Bear's Young Prayer is, to my mind, a perfect album, in that it does exactly what it sets out to do as a musical work. How can I make such an allegation? Although I can't profess to somehow know the precise effect that the artist was aiming for, I would refer skeptics to the album's title, which, in this case, serves as an excellent expression of the music's intent. Let me explain a little more clearly.

Listening to these 9 untitled tracks as one cohesive whole has an overwhelming effect on both my senses and consciousness. The music is simply so powerful and beautiful that I have felt it necessary to listen to it only under ideal circumstances, usually with headphones, so that every sonic detail can be picked up and fully appreciated. I would advise potential listeners to do the same, either waiting for or setting up situations conducive to relaxation and reflection, without interruptions. Then, open yourself up and allow this entrancing elegy to be poured into you.

Each track follows a succession that, when considered, seems to be the one necessary arrangement. For instance, although almost none of the vocals consist of understandable lyrics, one can hear Panda Bear at the end of track 1 proclaiming "...this is how I will speak to you..." and "...this is how you will know me." This acts as a perfect lead-in to the rest of the album as a whole. Most tracks are heavily-strummed, lovely, pensive wanderings, but a few stray from this prototype, most notably 5 and 7. The former is a playful, pounding chant, and the latter is a slow, mournful lament with highly-processed vocals. The emotions evoked by each of these miniatures are intense but very difficult to pinpoint. My personal listening experience tends to make me feel completely immersed in my surroundings, contemplative, melancholic and elated (often at the same time!), and extremely nostalgic. This is where the title comes in: this music is simply bursting at the seams with all the joy and the pain, all the wonder and the fear of childhood. In its unabashed youthfulness, it yearns for the soothing presence of a wise and trusted adult, but in the end, it assumes that roll as well. It is the arc of learning to accept something. I will never let this music go.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty, Pain, Loss...all recorded with Grace........2004-11-30

We can all relate to the loss of a loved one. Some of us have lost great-grandmothers, cousins twice-removed, or other folks that we didn't know well enough to cause serious mourning. Noah Lennox (a.k.a. Panda Bear) is another story. He lost his father, and as an emotional response to this he recorded "Young Prayer".

Now, you can choose to seperate the record from its overwhelming context, but I choose not to. That's like trying to take the South out of Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury". So listening to "Young Prayer" as a man's catharsis and healing place is absolutely essential to the experience itself.

The record consists of eight tracks, all unnamed, which makes it much easier to absorb if you can sit and listen all the way through (which isn't that hard...it's under 30 minutes long, all total). The arrangements are sparse, with guitar, vocals, and selected other instruments taking up the bulk of the album. The lyrics are mostly unintelligable, but what you do feel is how much his father meant to Noah. This is a record that can be emotionally draining if you're not in the right frame of mind.

Ultimitely, however, it serves as a guidepost along the way to those in mourning. In the liner sleeve, Panda Bear dedicates it simply, beautifully; "This is for my father. Goodbye, dad. I hope you are good where you are." Thanks to Panda Bear, we're all a little better off, too.

4 out of 5 stars Panda Bear's High Lonesome.......2004-10-03

"Young Prayer" is not the recording that you might expect to hear from Panda Bear. Half of the prolific and enchanting Animal Collective, "Young Prayer" does not overwhelm the senses in the manner of the Animal Collective's "Sung Tongs" or "Spirit They're Gone Spirit". Animal Collective is the intersection of Brian Wilson's spiritual harmonies and the Stockhausen/Cage-meets-the-pop-song sonic dissonance of Can and the Velvet Underground. Found sounds, waves of distortion and compression, joyful dissonance, in-the-round singing, cut-and-paste sound collage. This is the sort of hypnotic music that your cats will hate you for.

The sounds of "Young Prayer" are unexpected even while they rest within the sonic footprint created by the Animal Collective. By unexpected I mean that "Young Prayer" is less reminiscent of the latest Animal Collective recording, "Sung Tongs," than of the reverbed high lonesome of My Morning Jacket's Jim James in "At Dawn". And high lonesome this album is; recorded in Panda Bear's childhood home, following the death of his father, this album, if nothing else, is a requiem.

"Young Prayer" is a stripped down recording, for all I know it might have been taped onto a four-track or a walkman. "Young Prayer" is the strumming of an acoustic guitar, it is the thin wail of Panda Bear, it is the rhythm of a hand-clap, it is the feeling of being alone in an empty house. "Young Prayer" is not a solo album in the sense of setting oneself apart from a previous musical endeavor (think of Lou Reed's "Transformer" following the dissolution of the Velvet Underground), it is the miles that pass from the Velvet Underground's freak-out on 'European Son' to the pleading of 'Jesus'. Or the boisterous surf-rock of the Beach Boys singing 'Surfin' Safari' in 1962 to the transcendental 'God Only Knows' in 1966. By these comparisons I mean that "Young Prayer" possesses a feeling that the Animal Collective recordings lack, and that is the feeling of loneliness and loss.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2007-01-07

Sin Bandera offered us a nice CD and I was surprised when I heard the songs "Será", "Un Buen Perdedor" and "Si Tú No Estás aquí" that I heard the original versions and These new ones are as good as those but Sin Bandera conserves its unique style.

Nice... I recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Back to the Past.......2006-11-15

Sin Bandera has become one of the most influential duo in Latin music with classics such as "Sirena," "Que Lloro," and "Suelta Mi Mano," just to name a few. Now they are paying respect to the classics that have influenced their great musical career by reinterpreting artists such as Ricardo Montaner, Franco de Vita, Luis Miguel, Miguel Bose and even Tom Jones. And to be honest, there are some hits and some near misses, but never trying to outshine the original. Their first single "Si tu no estas" from the Spanish singer Rosana, is one of those gems that enhances the original but does not make you forget it. Sin Bandera does such a sublime job that it is marked with their style, yet they pay tribute. My favorite of the whole bunch is their hopeful approach to Ricardo Montaner's "Sera." Stylistically, it is completely different from the original; however, the power still remains as Sin Bandera increases the tempo and reworks the background music. Most importantly the duo of Leonel and Noel have the vocal capability to match Ricardo Montaner's. It is just as great as the original. The one I was a little disappointed by is their rendition of Miguel Bose's "Si tu no vuelves." This one is definitely outdone by the original for Noel and Leonel cannot match Bose's crystal clear tenor-like voice. Moreover, Sin Bandera's modernization of the background music is a bit distracting. This one seems to be the least of Sin Bandera's style. In spite of this, it is still a great song to listen to but the original is clearly better. Overall I found the cd to be moving, as I come to expect from any Sin Bandera album. Sin Bandera certainly does an outstanding job at reimagining the past into the present.

5 out of 5 stars 4 stars isn't good enough.......2007-07-02

Hard to believe that this band hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. Don't be suprised if you find yourself singing along..they're catchy. Just pick up the album and hear why.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but pretty solid.......2007-03-09

This is definatly not AZ's best work. After being so excited about this release for so long, I was actually a little disappointed when i first popped it in my cd player but it did grow on me after giving it a few real listens. They lost a lot of their diverse sound. It's more a staight punk album than either of the previous. In the songs where they do slow down and lay down some reggae, they lay it on thick and those songs jam. All of the faster songs are all just pretty average with the exception of a few (e.g. track 1). Worth picking up if you're an Auth Zero fan, but don't make it your first AZ album. Pick up one of the others instead.

5 out of 5 stars No other band compares!.......2007-02-26

It's amazing to hear the change and growth that AZ has gone through! Every CD has been amazing, but this one left me speechless!! What an awesome sound from a great group of guys. I know you can't sample the music from this CD on Amazon but trust me, you will NOT be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-02-13

Why has Authority Zero not gotten the attention that they deserve? This cd just came out and stores don't even have it in stock, no reviews have been written, and it has not gotten the appropriate air play. Authority Zero IS my favorite band right now. They are amazingly talented, and their style is unmatched by any punk or rock band. They have a unique sound and great music. Pick this cd up if you want to be impressed!

    3 out of 5 stars Spirit they've gone dansing.......2006-10-02

Before the Animal Collective was called that (original name: Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin and Geologist), they were already producing oddball music -- three full-length albums and a live performance. Their first two albums were "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished," and "Danse Manitee," a pair of radically different experimental albums. One is definitely inspired, while the other is amateurish.

"Danse Manitee" starts off with a strange whining sound, sort of like an electronic disturbance, in the oddly named "A Manatee Dance." That whining continues throughout the song, interrupted by sudden bursts of video-game blips. But the tone changes with the electro-thrash of "Penguin Penguin," an abstract collection of calls and drums, and ambient fuzzpop.

They continue to vary wildly in style throughout the album, noodling through hallucinatory pop, thumping rock interspersed with cries, muted acoustics, and the rippling distortion music, which is likely to give listeners a splitting headache. But there are some solid songs in the second half, like the murky "Throwin' the Round Ball" and folky "Ahhhh Good Country."

"Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" also opens with high-pitched distortion, which continues in a few songs after that, but it's a much easier album to embrace. After the intro, they launch into a screaming fuzz-rock beginning, which switches into the melodic pop of "April and the Phantom," complete with chirping birds and fast guitar.

From there on, the band tries out a variety of pop styles, all with the background noise and fuzzy edges that Animal Collective fans will expect. There's the gentle piano leading up to a dreamy "Penny Dreadfuls," the creepy Halloweeny "Chocolate Girl," the electro-cricket "Everyone Whistling," and finally finishing up with the twelve-minute pop melody of "Alvin Row," which seamlessly switches from pop to rock to experimental soundscapes.

Like many a double album, these two suffer from a simple problem: One is brilliant, and the other is... well, not. "Danse Manitee" is a fairly good experimental album, with some good electronics and vocals, but there's always the feeling of talented, inexperienced musicians who are just sort of noodling around, and not playing to their strengths. With most songs, there's the feeling that it could have been so much more.

"Spirit They're Gone..." is the reverse. Here, the now-Animal Collective is playing to their strengths -- catchy pop melodies, marinated in experimental sounds and pastoral noises. Basic guitars, drums and pianos are immersed in electronic noise and distortion, bell-like synth, and samples of crickets, birds and other things. And soft, crooning vocals are laid over the whole thing, making the softer songs seem almost lulling.

"Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" and "Danse Manitee" are worth checking out, whether it's for the experimental pop or for the die-hard Animal Collective fan, wanting to see the band's early days. One is great, while the other merely mediocre.

3 out of 5 stars "Spirit..." A pretentious album and a look at things to come.......2006-05-30

I listened to "Spirit They're Gone Spirit, They're Vanished" after the "Dansee Manatee" part of this two-disc re-release of one of my current favorite groups. I must say, I probably won't listen to Dansee Manatee again... And don't immediately dispell me as people who only want to listen to catchy / 100% accessable music all the time.
The reason I didn't like Dansee Manatee that much is because I think these guys were trying to hard to be out of the ordinary. These things should come naturally... and when it does, it defeniatly reflects (see Sonic Youth, Slint, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, etc...) But here, it's just aimless ramblings. I could'nt find a focus point for the album at all.
What impressed me more was the first disc (Spirit...) because it reminded me much more of later work such as Here Comes the Indian. A lot of the tracks were actually quite fantastic, being a trip of a song. Some started off quiet or awkward, but had the knack to turn into something contemporary. The amorphic structures of the songs were pleasing, albeit heard somewhere before. I couldn't help but still feel that this album doesn't stand out nearly as much as Sung Tongs. Although the longer songs (such as alvin row) had a nice adventuristic touch, they weren't memorable.
Overall, I give the album three stars because I can tell Avey Tare and Panda Bear put much effort into it, but the end result simply pales in comparison to their later (and far more accessable) work, not because it's not as accessable, but because it's less focused.

5 out of 5 stars Weird, yet highly addictive.......2005-03-14

I was browsing the "A" section at the music store the other day when I stumbled upon Animal Collective. "I've heard good things about them," I thought, but I had yet to actually hear them. Here's what I now know: They rock! On one hand, this isn't something that you show off to a group of friends in your car. It's just too weird. On the other hand, who needs to show off music to their friends? I'd imagine if people had actually heard this, it would garner similar public response to, say, a David Lynch film; you'll either love it or hate it.

Well, I love it. I think it's because if I was in a band it would sound something like this. I'm basically referring to disc 1, which is also known as "Spirit they're gone spirit they've vanished." Disc two, contrastly, doesn't hold a candle to disc 1. If I was held at gunpoint right now, i'd have to give that one a 3. I've been more than satisfied with disc 1 as is, though. I have no desire to listen to the second disc. Maybe the double disc release as a whole deserves a 4, but thinking about it, disc 1 alone was worth the 18 or 19 bucks.

The music is highly experimental. It starts out admittedly slow. Track 1 is very much a likeable song, yes, but in a My Bloody Valentine lure-to-sleep sort of way. It's also not too nice on the ears as pointed out by my annoyed sister. Track 2 is better, but the album really gets going starting with track 4. All the way through till the end is brilliant. It's got all kinds of influence that as far as I know comes from all over the world. You can not categorize this music. It's good to know that there is a band as creative as Animal Collective out there.

If you've got an open mind this could be a good place to start as it was great for me. I'm looking forward to picking up their other releases, considering this is my only exposure to Animal Collective. Download "Le Rapet" and "Bat you'll fly" and you'll be a fan. I think.

4 out of 5 stars Fair price for these two intriguing albums.......2004-06-15

Animal Collective are a fun group. It's not hard to be intimidated by their musical sensibilities, but it helps (for myself, anyhow) to view them under the similar spiritual serio-comic light as Mr. Bungle or The Ruins, just to name a couple of bands with that sort-of scatterbrained sense of musical narrative.

The first disc: "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've vanished" is my favorite of the two. The hushed vocals, catchy melodies, and sparse instrumentation, and sometimes stupefying use of squeals and crackles; all undulating as though it where composed and performed on the sea. It's a bit hypnotic after a while...
These guys certainly know how to put a pop song together, and "April and the Phantom" shows that talent off beautifully(only it's waterlogged)
However, I don't recomend listening to this if you're in a tense mood, or even if, say, you've got sinus trouble or something.
You'll hear some high pitch tones that seems just below a dog whistle's. That high pitched shimmer in "Bat You'll Fly" for example..
I had to turn the treble down just a bit the first time I heard this so I wouldn't get a headache.

The second disc: "Danse Manatee" is more subtle. The sense of humour is still there, but the album has a slightly darker, disturbed quality. You might say I'm still on the fence over it, but I don't feel like I'm wasting my time listening to it.

All in all, this is probably the best place to start if you've ever been curious about Animal Collective.

5 out of 5 stars When April passes by, I thinks of playing THIS.........2003-12-03

This album is amazing amazing amazing. One of the best innovative and refreshingly original records I've heard in a long time. Every song is beautiful. Every song is amazing and I just have to see these guys live. I can never get tired of it.
