The zheng, or Chinese lap harp, yields curlicues of sound that are perfectly apt for recording the memories of an old man who has forgotten more stories than we will ever learn. This is a special record: a solo statement by an 80-year-old master who has retired from nearly everything, and now simply sits back and lets his hands move across the strings as his mind wanders the centuries. The bareness of the liner notes is a blessing. These tunes were all written to accompany either poems or operas. It seems fitting that we know this without really being informed of the contexts, because a master and scholar like Chen experiences the texts he is accompanying with so much more depth than we could hope to pick up from a paragraph or two. It gives more pleasure to let these quizzical melodies crawl under your skin and tweak your heart, knowing that the musician is living some poem you can't hear or an opera you can't see. -Chris King
