Hailed upon its arrival as a significant comeback for the Band, this 1975 collection hasn't aged as well as the likes of Stage Fright, Moondog Matinee, or even the outfit's post-Robbie Robertson output. The eight-song collection (augmented on the 2001 reissue with two agreeable extras--alternate versions of "Twilight" and "Christmas Must Be Tonight") isn't without its delights, foremost being Rick Danko's heavy-hearted reading of the devastating "It Makes No Difference." But for every "Forbidden Fruit" and "Ophelia"--worthy additions to Robertson's credits--there are the somewhat forced likes of "Jupiter Hollow" and "Rags and Bones." Also, Garth Hudson stocked up on the latest technology before heading into the studio, but the layers ARPs and mini-Moogs here contribute to a feeling of busyness. Northern Lights--Southern Cross is very much a '70s album--not a good thing from a quintet whose best music was tough to peg to any era. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
The final classic.......2007-01-10
The Band's sixth and final proper studio album (I don't really count Islands, the collection of half-hearted studio outtakes, as a real album), Northern Lights - Southern Cross is a surprisingly strong comeback in both writing and performance. The Band hadn't released an album of new material since the disappointing Cahoots, and the extracurricular substance-related activities of Richard Manuel and Rick Danko lessened their songwriting output considerably (completely in Manuel's case). However, despite their stumbles and a growing divergence of some members (guitarist/songwriter Robbie Robertson would be ready to leave the group not long after the album was released), the quintet pull off amazing comeback album, filled with what originally made The Band so classic--great writing, strong playing from Manuel, Danko and Levon Helm, and expert playing, especially from organist/multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson.
The album kicks off with the rocking "Forbidden Fruit," a cautionary tale sung by Helm. One thing I actually like about Robertson's somewhat egotistical prominence in the later Band material is his up-front, gnarly guitar--he starts using the whammy bar on this album, and the results are wicked to say the least. He takes a few blistering solos in "Forbidden Fruit" that make you wonder if he sold his soul for his guitar skills. This song also marks Garth Hudson's introduction of (then) new synthesizers into his arsenal of keyboards. It might off-put you if you're a classic Americana Band fan, but give it a chance--it really grew on me. Regardless of the instrument, it's still being played by the bearded master, Garth Hudson. The second track is a "Hobo Jungle," a mid-tempo narrative that features some excellent acoustic guitar from Robbie and one of the finest vocal melodies on Band record, sung by Richard Manuel. Despite his heavy drinking, his voice still sounds great, though it's become quite weathered. "Ophelia" is one of the more well-known tracks on the album. The Band uses an almost Dixieland horn arrangement and Levon Helm, in addition to singing, pounds the skins with reckless abandon.
The other well-known track is "Acadian Driftwood," a song Robbie wrote about the Acadian Indians who were forced to move from Canada to Louisiana. It's a heartfelt tribute, sung by all three vocalists and featuring a piccolo part by Garth Hudson. "Ring Your Bell" is one of the group's funkiest songs, a pretty humorous outlaw tune and a all-out belter from Danko, who also sings "It Makes No Difference." One of Robbie Robertson's best love ballads, this track became a sort of signature torch tune for Rick, and it's buoyed by some of Robbie's revelatory guitar and Garth on saxophone. "Jupiter Hollow" is a long (for The Band) and experimental song--a great detour, with a lot of mythological and mystical imagery, and a whole lot of synth overdubs from Garth Hudson. It makes for a really cool listen and has a groovy vibe and some creative drumming from Levon. The album closes on a truly classic note with "Rags and Bones," another darkly funky romp through a night-time city with some of Robbie's most lively and creative guitar (check out that left channel--wow!).
Northern Lights - Southern Cross is The Band's shortest album, and it's always over too soon. The bonus tracks are OK, but as usual don't add anything (careful they don't spoil the vibe of the original album). This one definitely ranks pretty high up there for me as one of their top albums--worlds better than Cahoots and with moments that transcend a lot of their other material. It's such a pity they had to quit making music when their last album was this great. A lot of people will tell you they didn't make any good music after Stage Fright, but give Northern Lights - Southern Cross a try and I think you might agree with me that that's simply not true. I hope you enjoy The Band's final classic!
One of the Band's Best -- An Elegant Swan Song.......2006-02-14
I disagree with the reviewers who find this album too "70s" -- yes, the production and Garth's use of the Moog and other synths peg the recording date of the record -- but why is that presumed to be a bad thing?
I love the way these songs flow seamlessly from one to another -- the songs all deal with loss, upheaval, movement, endurance, cycles of joy and sadness, all beautifully pieced together. The liner notes on the reissue really add to the significance and enjoyment of these songs; I love the way Robbie wrote "Ophelia" and "Forbidden Fruit" using older, discarded chord progressions. Danko knocks one of the park with his tortured, sensitive reading of "It Makes No Difference," and personally I enjoy Garth's enveloping and intricate synth work on "Jupiter Hollow." Of course Acadian Driftwood is a classic story of uprooting, perseverance, and survival, and even the unadorned and simple Christmas song tacked on to the end works for me.
One of the Band's best and a great way to go out (I prefer to ignore Islands....).
I like the words; the singing is great, some songs outstanding.......2006-01-16
On Junior Day, 2006, I would like to seek lessons from the twentieth century that apply to the situation in the world. Things change, but our grasp of sentimentality can ebb or flow either way, particularly if it is informed by listening to The Band album from 1975, `Northern Lights, Southern Cross.' Someone in The Band might be from Canada, and the song `Acadian Driftwood' pictures a family with a broken-down car trying to get someplace where life was better, as some French Canadians made it all the way to New Orleans after France lost its hold on Quebec. Somehow the music seems a bit more cheerful for the song `Ophelia,' when The Band is singing:
Ashes of laughter, the ghost is clear,
Why do the best things always disappear,
like Ophelia? Please darken my door.
There are a number of songs about drifters. `Hobo Jungle,' `Jupiter Hollow,' and maybe `Rags And Bones.' In the first song, `Forbidden Fruit,' there is an admonition:
You got one life that you better not waste.
The Band had been playing together for years when `Northern Lights, Southern Cross' was recorded. Among the tales of woe that allowed music to explore the depths of the human situation, `It Makes No Difference' by J. R. Robertson took four or five chords to get through the first two lines, added a few more chords for the chorus, then managed to fit in a few more for the part in the middle that declares:
Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before.
Civilization requires certain limits to love, which threatens to uproot the basic standards of stability, but music keeps morphing, as The Band throws in a few more chords near the end with the words:
Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls.
Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before.
The last four lines probably use the same chords as the lines ending with "But the clouds never hung so low before." The hurt of lost love seems to apply to love that never even happened yet, rain or shine, because "The shadow never seems to fade away." And as for songs:
These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more.
3rd Best Band Album, Still one of the Top 100 ever.......2005-06-19
It is well known that by 1975 when this album was recorded, The Band was much less a band than they used to be, not due to loss of talent, but loss of the easygoing friendships that had fueled the first two albums. What a showing they still make.
To me Richard Manuel sang some of the greatest performances of his life on this album, for instance check out: Hobo Jungle, Rags & Bones, Acadian Driftwood. Levon and Rick also hand in some fine performances, Levon particularly on Forbidden Fruit, Rick's Swan Song is most definately It Makes No Difference. Robbie provides some very good lyrics for the whole album. Garth is brilliant of course, "ain't it easy when you know how" .
My only complaint is it is just not long enough, 8 songs on the original, 10 on the remastered edition. I grew up in a house full of Classic Rock "N Roll. When I heard The Band, I was mesmerized by how each song can sound so different from each other but they never lose that tight ensemble sound. To me Richard Manuel is the greatest singer in the History of Popular Music.
A must purchase for any fan of The Band, or any fan of Truly Soulful, meaningful Roots Music.
****1/4. The Band's last great record.......2004-08-03
The strongest Band album since "Stage Fright", "Northern Lights, Southern Cross" was The Band's first studio album in four years. Better than "Cahoots" and "Moondog Matinee", it is really The Band's last hurrah, although the mediocre "Islands" did come out in 1977, after the Canadian-American outfit had stopped touring for good. (Robbie Robertson says about "Islands": "It wasn't even an album, we were just trying to get out of a contract!")
"Northern Lights, Southern Cross" features the same dense, muscular arrangements as previous albums, anchored by Levon Helm's supple, versatile drumming, and the role of lead vocalist is still passed around between Helm, Danko, and Manuel. The only notable difference is that Garth Hudson had partially abandoned his Lowrey organ in favour of synthesizers (that may sound ominous, but it really isn't).
Robbie Robertson is credited as the sole composer on all eight tracks on the original LP, as well as the newly added bonus cuts, and the many highlights include the rollicking "Ophelia", Rick Danko's excellent performance of the mournful ballad "It Makes No Difference", and the lyrical, acoustic folk-rock of "Hobo Jungle".
But the album's centrepiece has to be the epic "Acadian Driftwood", a nearly seven minute folkish narrative which chronicles the story of the Acadians, a people exiled from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the 1750s. It is a superbly evocative masterpiece, one of Robbie Robertson's very best songs.
Not as highly touted as "Music From Big Pink" or "The Band", "Northern Lights, Southern Cross" is nevertheless one of The Band's classic albums. Being the Band's fourth best record really isn't half bad, you know.

this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.
A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30
If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.
Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.
Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20
Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

an excellent sampler of patriotic military music.......2003-02-17
I love this CD because it combines into one disc many outstanding and well recorded (Telarc DDD) performances of a variety of patriotic military tunes. For someone who doesn't want to break down and buy the entire "Victory at Sea" set, along with soundtracks to "Patton," "Casablanca" and more, this is a fine choice. My only complaint would be that conductor Kunzel has a habit of adding his own flourishes to pieces. But the outstanding clarity of the Telarc sound and the grandness of the Cincinnati Pops counters this.

Raw and Excellent.......2006-03-05
This is Cross's first album - the trained ear will be able to pick this up - however it is currently my favorite Cross album. Carneyman, the first song, is truly excellent and the rest of the album leans great support to make a very solid album. If you listen to Jason Boland, Jack Ingram, Pat Green, REK, JJW, etc then you will love these guys. I highly recommend this album.
Great CD.......2004-07-23
Noone better in Red Dirt Country than CCR! This is a great CD and all the ones that follow!!
Ragweed's first studio album their worst, but still good :).......2004-05-05
First of all, I like this album so don't get me wrong. After all, I gave it 4 of 5 stars It's worth the price just for "Jenny" and the studio version of "Carney Man". There are also a couple of other songs I really like here, such as "Alright" and "Leave Your Leaving". However, this is the only CCR album where I find myself skipping tracks and only listening to a few of 'em.
I don't care for this version of "Proud Souls". It's a Jason Boland tune, and I think they actually recorded it before he did. Once you hear Jason Boland & The Stragglers do this one, you realize how much the CCR version pales in comparison. (And don't hate me...Cody Canada would tell you the same thing.) Also, I always skip "Help Me (Get Over This Mountain)", "April's Girlfriend", and "Sweet Teresa".
You may like this album just fine if you haven't heard much of CCR's music before. However, if you're not already a CCR fan I recommend you start with one of their other albums, like the purple album, "Live & Loud at the Wormy Dog Saloon", or "Highway 377". Come back to this one later, though!

Victory at Sea, Volume I, More Victory at Sea.......2006-03-05
I have purchased two copies of each CD from different sources and find the recordings are apparently faulty on the last two tracks of each. I thought my first incident was my fault, however, the second had the same flaw.
Amazon lists wrong conductor.......2004-03-21
Amazon lists Richard Rodgers as both the composer and conductor. Of course, Robert Russell Bennett is the conductor. Amazon's correction form doesn't allow for an accurate correction suggestion. I haven't played my old records for a while, but the CD sounds as I remember them. Too bad it doesn't contain the full contents of the three records.
A few good pieces missing.......2003-10-15
I have a 2-audiotape set with 3 additional pieces that are sadly missing here. Magnetic North so well portrays the cold and harsh war in the Aleutian Islands as it was presented in the TV series. It always raises goose bumps at its haunting conclusion with strings emulating the artic winds. Mediterranean Mosaic and Mare Nostrum are 2 others that I would have preferred over the Symphonic Suite, which I have never heard on 2 different audio tape versions or a 33 1/3 vinyl set.
disappointment.......2003-05-15
After reading the reviews and discovering that the CD is not the same as the original records that I still own, I do not plan on purchasing the CD until RCA releases what was/is a magnificent piece of work. Perhaps it is political corectness that is keeping them from releasing the "original" work "uncensored". Until such time as they give the present generation a look into one of the greatest recordings made, I will stay with my 33 1/3 rpm recordings, and transfer them to my computer myself...
Remembering the Victory at Sea TV Series.......2003-01-09
The most memorable portion of the Victory at Sea music is the descriptive and haunting "Song of the High Seas" introduction. Rodgers was absolutely brillant in matching the music to the film footage of the series. His marches and many of the other themes can be easily hummed. I find myself doing it all the time. I believe the original music became available in 331/3 LPs. Three were issued. The first one was played by "Members of the NBC Symphony" conducted by Bennett. It was later reissued with the orchestra as the RCA Victor Symphony(assembled for special performances). There is a slight difference in the sound and tempo of "Song of the High Seas" between the two orchestras. Two more LPs followed, both performed by the RCA Symphony with sound effects(airplanes, artillery) added in the third LP. All of the music from the 3 LPs were then put together into the two CDS now available("blue" and "red" ones). The "green" one contains selections from both. I do not know if the entire score was ever performed in concert. I believe the "Symphonic Suite"(selection of the major themes) was arranged by Bennett and was done, so it could be performed at concerts. It is also included on the CDs. There was at one time a recording done by the Cincinnati Pops of Victory at Sea selections, but I have not listened to it. This is really fine music, Richard Rodgers, at his best and admirably performed by the RCA Victor Symphony.

AMAZING!!.......2006-09-13
These dudes keep it hot with every release. This is THE cd that finally made me see that Gospel Rap can sound better than Non-Gospel Rap. This Dudes Can Actually Rhyme, the production is Outstanding. I was like "What?" Their content is also very Christian! Many so-called Christian Rappers out there compromise their message to the point that you can't tell it's Christian anymore. Not The Case Here! Somehow, they manage to make scripture sound cool. Don't know how they do it man! Talented group of guys here. You will hear the name Jesus, You will Hear scripture, you will love it! Definitely worth the purchase.

I'm a middle aged person with very discriminating taste, in 2000
I pretty much stopped listening to any music that was not gospel
because nothing else spoke to my heart or soul.....until CM. They are without a doubt creative wordsmiths. I LOVE this treasure from God. Tight beats, great hooks, Truth ya'll!! the production is professional and simply blessed. I'm BUYING everything I can find from Crossmovement. I share it with my grandchildren and feel good not ashamed. HHH has blessed my life.
GOD DOES ALL THINGS WELL.

Sweet Gospel Cd.......2005-06-12
This is a really sweet cd that I recommend that anyone should listen to. It is a positive influence on the Urban Culture that really reflects the word of God. One of my favorite tracks is "Closer to You" which really reflects that hearts desire to be closer in God. All of their tracks really shows the Word that can really affect our society. It has many good lyrics and a really tight hip hop beat. They are really good leaders that spread the Word of God through their Holy hip hop Culture.

First, I want to clarify that this review is based on both mine and my 11-yr-old's view. Though he pretty much likes all of the songs on this album, Tracks 2, 7, 9, 10, 15 and 19 are his favorites. As a parent, I like this group because ALL their songs actually sing/rap about the Lord. My personal favorites are #15 (Closer To You) and #2 (When I Flow...It's Gospel).
With 20+ tracks you will definitely get your money's worth!!

Chronicle: Greatest Hit Volume 1 from The Cross Movement what can I say.......2006-10-27
Chronicle: Greatest Hit Volume 1 from The Cross Movement what can I say about this album apart from it is hot and every track is in a class of it own. Every time I get a Cross Movement album I always remember the Wu Tang Clan, while? There are a collection of top quality rappers and every one of them is a solo artist in its own right. I hope you understand what I am getting at, if you love hip hop you most have heard of them and yes they are not a holy hip hop band. Back to the album, Features tracks form Phanatik, The Gift, Cruz Cordero, T.R.U.-L.I.F.E, Enock, The Ambassador, and The Tonic. Five tracks on the album are remixed they are as followings: Know Me [Huh what?] - The Cross Movement, C to the R - Phanatik, Rise Up - The Ambassador, It's Going Down - T.R.U- L.I.F.E and Forever - The Tonic. Like if that is not enough there are 2 brand new tracks from The Cross Movement and they are Da Truth Iz and The Drawing Board. I have to say it is good to see a track from Enock - On the Move feature after his great solo project do you remember it? Well this album is a most because it does not disappoint and every joint that is featured is tight. The only downside for me on the album is that there is not enough tracks because when I think of greatest hits I expect 20 tracks plus.
CM is the standard........2006-10-18
When the Cross Movement puts out an album, its a must own. Even if its a greates hits album, you can find a great selection of some of their best tracks on one disc, and they spice it up by taking familiar favorites and remixing them with fresh new beats. I have to first admit, some of the remixes on this disc are not as good as the originals, but if you have the originals on past CM releases then this is a refreshing change. If you don't have the originals, then you need to go and get them. The ambassador and the Phanatik are the best lyricists in all of hip hop, whether secular of Christian, and their content is full of truth. Its hard to find Holy Hip Hop artists that rep the true faith in every line, but people like CM, Reach, and Lampmode are always sure things if you want music that matters. Cm are the pioneers of legit Holy Hip Hop, and this disc is a great sampler of what they bring, and what God brings through them. Being familiar with every song they've ever done, I would have made some different song selections for a greatest hits album. One of the Ambassador songs is my least favorite of any song he's ever done, but even their worst is better than most Christian M.C.'s ever offer up. This is a must own.

HIGHER DEFINITION - CROSS MOVEMENT.......2007-01-19
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CONSISTENT RELEASES. GREAT VARIETY OF ARTISTS AND FEATURED ARTISTS. THIS IS HOLY HIP HOP AT ITS BEST. PHILADELPHIA IS THE CITY WHERE THEY COME FROM.
I want more!.......2006-11-10
I'm a young "old" person, who uncharactistically likes hip-hop and rap. So I thought I would give this a listen since I was planning on seeing them at Autumn Blaze. I love this CD! I love this band! I'm asking Santa for more CD's by this band. I want more!
They can't go wrong.......2006-10-18
This is another complete and brilliant album from the pioneers of hip hop. They arent afraid of contaversy if truth is at stake. An earlier review was bothered by their references to the Pentacostal, Charasmatic denominations in regaurds to prosperity messages. They arent causing seperation in the faith, their combating dangers to the true gospel that knows nothing of prosperity teaching. This doesnt apply to all Pentacostal, Charismatics, just the ones caught in this get rich gospel deception. John 17 doesnt rebutt anything these guys put down, it confirms what they've done. Their music is for the whole church of all denominations, as long as the true church is being true. These guys tell it like the Bible does, but in a way all Hip Hop Heads can catch the message and relate. CM, keep it up boys.
REAL!!!.......2006-09-13
This is good music.. simple and plain. Straighforward message, great beats, microphone skills (the boys can flow), and it all meshes well. All the songs are nice, but Phanatik really shined on "Card Shark" - one of the most creative joints I've ever heard whether Christin or Non-Christian. The cd is definitely worth the the purchase.

another great gerard schwarz cornet album.......2006-02-02
Once again I am amazed by a great Gerrard Schwarz album. I own all of his albums and bought this one right away. I think he is quite possibly the most musical trumpet/cornet player ever to play alongside Maurice Andre. This album is great, and there are many more albums featuring these great players that should be re-released, such as "Festival of Trumpets" with the new york trumpet ensemble. Nontheless this album is a must pickup for any music enthusiast.
Not Your Normal Repertoire....but EXCELLENT!.......2005-09-27
I didn't know what to make of this CD before I bought it, and still haven't totally figured it out as I was listening to it, but I did find it very enjoyable. "Turn Of The Century Cornet Favorites", as this CD is titled, seems to be a misnomer...I didn't recognize one selection among the 19 tracks contained, but that may be the greatest appeal of this CD for any cornet player, brass player, or aficionado desiring some relatively unknown, but well-played, music from a bygone era. As I was listening to the CD, images of the turn-of-the century came to mind. I imagined sitting near a gazebo, while a community band and soloist performed on a summer's eve, or perhaps at a pavilion at the World's Fair. Having played french horn and other brass instruments in my youth, I was familiar with the names of Clarke and Arban (who wrote a celebrated Cornet Method still used today in many colleges and conservatories), and some of their better known compositions. But I have to admit, this materials was all new to me. For anyone wanting to supplement their brass CD collection with recordings not found anywhere else, this CD will do very nicely indeed. The playing by cornet player Gerard Schwarz in amazing, with technique to burn and a beautiful tone to match. Kudos also goes to the outstanding accompaniment he receives from the Columbia Chamber Ensemble. Also, please see my review of "Footlifters" (another winner), part of the Brass Masterworks series on Sony. Keep them coming.
This is Music.......2005-09-20
You would be hard pressed to find any recording that exhibits greater qualities of lightness, motion, and beautiful phrasing than this one. Add to that Schwartz's beautiful tone and flawless technique, and you have the perfect model of how these cornet solos should sound. I write as a trumpet player who has played quite a bit in this style.
