On Dreamer, São Paulo-born, Manhattan-based pianist Eliane Elias performs bossa novas and brush-stroked ballads by North and South American composers from Johnny Mercer to Antonio Carlos Jobim. This project is a sort of musical homecoming for Elias, who once worked with bossa nova pioneer Vinicius de Moraes. Elias's pretty pianisms complement her breathy Portuguese/English contralto, especially on the '60s hit "Call Me," "Photograph (Fotografia)," and "So Nice (Samba de Verão)." Elias's two compositions, "Movin' Me On" and "Time Alone," can be considered smooth-jazz-friendly, but the Bahia bounce of "Doralice"--where Elias quotes Stan Getz's well-known tenor solo--and her instrumental rendering of Burt Bacharach's "A House Is Not a Home" are highlights of this masterpiece of soft syncopation. Rob Mathes's elegant, Claus Ogerman-style string arrangements enhance the mood. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Buzz Magazine

"Dreamer presents a sensuous blend of strings, singing and deft piano playing....her singing drifts above the melody in a sexy cloud. .... With its many moods and lovely turns, this record is the aural equivalent of a beautiful and graceful woman dancing in the dark."

lazy sunday afternoons, or in the rush hour after work, there is something that will be soaked by your body and soul, life afterall, is it not to be enjoyed by something beautiful?

What a voice, what a piano, what arrengements... and it all there for the taking, this is for your special collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-08-27

One of the best CD's I've purchased. Eliane has a soft magical voice. The perfect choice for escapism, relaxation, romance or just day dreaming. There's not a bad song here.

5 out of 5 stars So Nice!.......2006-06-28

I took a break from the SmartMarriages conference I was attending in Atlanta and slipped over to the Peachtree Mall looking for a quick snack. While I was there I happened upon a little shop called International Records. Since my wife was born and raised in Brasil I'm always looking for new music with a Brasilian flavor that we can share.

As I flipped through the row of Brasilian/Portuguese cds the shop owner recommended the new release by Elaine Elias. Within moments of Dreamer beginning I know that this was for me.

The music in Dreamer by Elaine Elias is smooth, sensual, and luscious. Elaine sings beautifully and her piano playing is magical. My favorite song is "So Nice."

So nice, life would be so nice
If one day I'd find
Someone who would take my hand
And samba through life with me

I can foresee many romantic evenings spent with my wife Joy, the Joy of my life, enjoying candlelight, wine, and the music of Elaine Elias. Maybe we'll even samba too.

Someone to take my heart
And give his heart to me
Someone who's ready to
Give love a start with me

I highly recommend you get a copy of Dreamer and create a romantic evening for you and your sweetie! Maybe you'll be inspired to try a little samba too!

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2006-05-16

This CD was a nice surprise. I had heard of Ms. Elias in the past, but never listened to her music. I found this CD to be very smooth and refreshing, yet it is not just fluffy stuff by someone with a pretty face. I found the music to be very well done (and I wish I could put it in better words). I will definitely look into other CDs by this artist.

Pianist Eliane Elias goes from bop and Bach to bossa nova just as easily as she sings in English and Portuguese. This CD is the sequel to her 2004 recording, Dreamer, and it features bassist Marc Johnson, guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, flutist Dave Valentin, and trumpeter Randy Brecker. The 13 selections are iPod-ready, techno-textured tunes, including the hip and hypnotic "Running"--which was recently featured on the television show Brothers and Sisters--the upbeat, Top 40-type number, "We're So Good," and the flamenco-flavored "Slide Show." But Elias's engaging renditions of several pop classics steal the show. The Santana/Tito Puente Latin masterpiece, "Oye Como Va," features her sly, new lyrics and her zesty, Fender Rhodes solo. Bob Marley's "Jammin'" is a resyncopated, electro-samba, and Beck's "Tropicalia" swings with Rio-born, soft syncopations. So it's no wonder that this Calle 54-featured, soulful South American can cross over into smooth jazz with ease and integrity. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Eliane Elias - Around The City
Producers: Eliane Elias, Andres Levin, Lester Mendez
RCA Victor
Release date: Aug 22

On "Around The City", pianist Elias assigns the keys a back seat in support of her alluring, sensuous vocals sung in English and Portuguese. The Brazil-born, New York-based Elias has played the singer card before in her 18-album career, but nothing like this outing, where she delivers a spellbinding meld of pop, Brazillian and Latin music with a jazz sensibility. Her pianistic excursions arrive sporadically and deeper into the 13-song collection, including a fine run in "A Vizinha Do Lado". But upfront is where "Around The City" enraptures, beginning with the spirited original "Running", and continuing with a bossa-steeped take on Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" and later a sultry swing through Beck's "Tropicalia". Standout track: Elias' jazzy spin on Bob Marley's "Jammin'" with loops, trumpet ornamentation and a piano sprint, all girded to earth with speedy grooves by two drummers.

4 out of 5 stars Not As Bad As the Purists Would Have You Believe.......2007-02-10

Having own Elias' 2004 LP "Dreamer", I too was surprised at the musical shift on this LP.

However, the question here is not rather or not it fits the narrow-minded view of jazz purists, but is a good LP? Here the answer is yes.

While the title track & "Oye Como Va" may have to grow on me, the rest of the CD is great. Try listening to "Running" or her version of Bob Marley's "Jamming" without moving your head or getting up to dance.
Elaine is also writing more, as she wrote or co-wrote many of the songs on this disc. She's still showing off her chows as a jazz pianist & there's still lots of brazilian jazz/bossa nova present (& even flamenco-favors with "Slide Show").

Bottom line, the purists should go elsewhere if they want nothing but standards, but the rest of us will enjoy this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Keep jazz alive, give this album a listen!.......2007-02-07

While Elias is an established musician/ pianist / keyboardist / vocalist / songwriter of a high order, one would be well-advised to casually ignore all the jazz snobs who bleat for Elias to return to playing "real jazz." A pedestrian listener such as myself can even vouch that without experimentation, fusing of different music traditions, and the need to break the bounds of what is considered "real jazz," Louis Armstrong, Bird, Miles, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor would never have happened. The drive in modern day to petrify jazz into a respectable art form has backfired and made jazz stagnant and frighteningly outdated today.

Ironically, what stodgy jazz connoisseurs regale as their iconic figure, Miles Davis, repeatedly broke the rules and courted many different music forms to make the continuum that is the heart of jazz pulse and breathe. Elaine Elias does just this. Those of us who love and listen to the so-called "hip" clubby/lounge music will truly appreciate the sonic adventure within "Around The City." Club music often samples other people's music passages into loops that- though stylish sounding- tends to entropy into banality. One has always wondered how the form could jettison in capable hands of great dexterity. Elias's reading of Bob Marley's "Jammin'" realizes this, with a momentum that sounds like a fluid updated sequel to Mile Davis's Milestone. It's fast, infectious, and reminiscent of the gyroscopic tension that Bebop was remembered for.

The track that is the pearl of the album however, is the stately "Slideshow." How wonderfully it captures what I call that Brazilian "Certain Sadness" that Astrud Gilberto's voice has come to embody. The lyrics are beautiful and the flamenco guitars and handclaps are gorgeous. Just one listen puts me on the cliffside roads leading into that stretch of beach front in Ipanema.

Songs like the Latin tinged rhythm of "Running," "Segredos," and "Oye Como Va," (suddenly sexy-sounding in the absence of Carlos Santana's whiny electric guitar) to a traditional jazz ballad of Buddy Johnson's "Save Your Love For Me" and a pop AOR easy-listening "We're So Good" showcases Elias's range. I hope Elias continues to explore. It's a sheer joy to see and hear that bossa nova can continue to evolve and stay with the times.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Genius .......2006-11-14

I almost understand why some jazz fans might have been disappointed by the direction of this CD by Eliane Elias. I too was surprised - 'Dreamer' seemed on its own to be a enough of a step into more commercial territory. I've listened to Eliane Elias for a while (think 'Nostalgia In Times Square'), so I am already in awe of her genius as a jazz pianist.

But to perceive Eliane Elias from a merely "purist jazz" point of view is awfully limiting to someone of her vast talent and grossly unfair. Good music is good music and no one musical genre has the patent on quality. Should someone with her smooth, versatile vocal style sing only mainstream jazz standards? Come on !!

Many of these songs are originals by Eliane as well (most are co-written) and they reveal her genius as someone who literally can do it all: sing, play, write, produce and arrange. To do all that and to do so with such amazing results and consistency shows an incredible genius on her part.

My favorite is 'We're So Good' which to me is one of the freshest originals I've heard in years. 'Running' is a great song as well. And she still puts out some incredible piano solos. In that respect, this CD almost reminds me of the recent Herbie Hancock CD 'Possibilities' in which jazz and pop were somewhat brought together.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you again, Eliane.......2006-11-09

I heard her perform these numbers recently at a new jazz club in New York called Dizzy's. The setting and the music were sublime. She started off with Tropicalia and I was hooked immediately. If you haven't seen her live, you don't know what you're missing. Her brilliance on the piano is just incredible. Marc Johnson and the rest of her quartet complement her so well. My brother and I gave her a standing "O" after nearly every number.

Sure, Dreamer was great and I saw her live when that one came out too.
This is also a winner. All I know is what my head, my heart, my tapping feet and my two ears tell me and they are saying Yesssssssssssssssss!

3 out of 5 stars That annoying little buzz . . ........2007-03-16

Elias' strength here--as in all her albums--is her keyboard work; very few match her command of the instrument, her intensity, fluency and arranging of the Jobim songbook. Notwithstanding the superb blending with her accompanists, her vocals are the most disappointing. Were this a purely instrumental CD, this would be an easy A+. Sounding more tentative than confident, the vocals are barely audible, and at times, incoherent, making this a frustrating listen for me--like the gnats that ruin an otherwise marvelous summer picnic, I keep swatting at the vocals! The two exceptions being the guitar/vocal interplay with Castro-Neves on "Falando de Amor" and "One Note Samba." Otherwise, musicianship is what carries the album: fine accompaniment, great arrangements, forgettable vocals!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent music to make love by..........2006-01-03

This is a romantic album! Elias' vocals are smooth, and her piano playign skills are second to none on a jazz level. These are fine verisons of bossa novas classics. Her piano and vocals both swing, yet so gently. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, Classy, A great Album.......2002-07-11

Eliane Elias put together a terrific band, including Michael Brecker, Oscar Castro-Neves (producer as well) and Marc Johnson to make this outstanding recording.

It's an elegant, classy, swinging album of Johim favorites that just doesn't have any weaknesses. Elias' singing and piano playing are especially beautiful on the ballads, but she and her band also really swing and groove on the uptempo tunes.

If you're a fan of the Brasilian genre you must own this side. If you want a great album to help set a romantic mood, this is one to have. Or, if you're a jazz fan, interested in all idioms of the music, it's a contemporary essential.

4 out of 5 stars Really Great CD!!!!!!!!.......2001-12-29

First off I wanna say that I love Eliane Elias for her singing, her LOOKS, her voice, and her piano playing. She is a great talent and this Cd really shows it off. When I First saw this cd i was in a mall and i was looking for the great jobim song "LOOKS LIKE DECEMBER" and this and another disc by Jobim came up so it showed you could hear some samples so I clicked the track and i said i have to have this CD cause this chick is great! when I orderd the CD it came to pretty quickly and when i opend the box and listen to hole CD I was in love with every thing about her...

5 out of 5 stars Already Well Reviewed; Excellent and Classy, little to add!!.......2001-06-15

Very little to be added...! I must accept that almost everything (I was going to say) about this CD, has already been said by almost all of the customer reviewers. This album IS a very good interpretation of some of Jobim's best. I find the comments by customer reviewer Clifford T. Dibble "...never overbearing, small combo feel", etc. perfectly reflecting my own discoveries. I'm also in complete agreement with S. Kelvin Yew from Singapore in-depth analysis, specially the comparisons with Elis Regina and a young Astrud Gilberto. Reviews by Gillian from Canada, "bossa lover" and "london rio newyork" are truly meaningful: please read them all-I can't agree more with all of their notes-. The sense of intimacy and warmth is well conveyed. The group backing is outstanding, and her playing never interferes with the original intentions of Jobim's minimalistic approach. Specially welcome is the use of string bass, against the ubiquitous "Fender-type" of electrical instrument that frequently spoils the true Bossa Nova sound. Brazilian drummer Paulo Braga also fits much more naturally than previous DeJohnette playing in 1990 release "Eliane plays Jobim" CD, at least much more naturally. Also appreciated is the precisely recorded sound of Eliane's perfectly tuned Steinway piano, less energetic than Tania Maria's but never overwhelming and perfectly blended with the sound of the rest of the group. Slightly dissapointing is the recorded sound of Oscar Castro-Neve's guitar, since his presence seems just a little laid back, lacking some luster and detail that this excellent guitarrist deserves. Breker's Sax sound appears just a little bit hollow, lacking the body and sensuousness that the late Stan Getz used to project, but classy enought to accompany Eliane's playing. Very few times so many customer reviews describe so well an album, therefore I cannot disagree more with the customer reviewer that rated this CD with only two stars; I guess he is just missing the point: it is Elia's voice lack of technical ability or range what allows her sheer, almost whispering beauty, really transmit the very essence of Bossa Nova, like Gilberto and Jobim (also subdued) voices firstly expressed it during the early 60's. Overall, very enjoyable and smooth, while being fresh and evolving at the same time, Elia's playing and arrangements introduce slightly different and new textures to the well known but not always well executed Jobim's masterpieces. Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This chick can play, & sing, & "keep time".............2007-05-27

FWIW, I have jazz degrees from a couple of the best music schools in the US (that & $5 will get you a Cappucino at Starbucks). IMO, Eliane Elias can play, she "digs in", her time is great, & she can sing.

Eliane Elias may be my new jazz piano hero/heroine. At least amongst younger players. It's not that her playing is the best jazz piano playing in history; it's that she "grooves": maybe one of the funkiest, most time-keeping pianists ever. Maybe out of Horace Silver? Or Joe Sample?

She's not going to put Fred Hersch, or Bud Powell, or K.J. out of business of course. It's that for me, the "musicality" of her playing & singing really grabs me.....whether you're a jazz purist, or someone who wants to explore jazz, you should check this out.....

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Joy Filled Album.......2006-04-03

Elias shows off her great Latin Jazz piano sounds, with some fun and joy filled tracks on this album. If you haven't listened to Elias before, this is the album to get. You won't be disappointed if you are a fan of the latin jazz sounds, and you don't have to be a purist to enjoy it. I find her piano innovations and emotions to be more creative than Krall on this album. The trio works together cohesively, and Elias blends the piano sounds to highlight the bass and percussion. You'll want to get up and dance to this one !!

1 out of 5 stars Almost Unbearable.......2005-08-05

This CD made me realize I am a Brazilian music purist. Could not bear the new age additions of running water and singing children; no doubt a talented pianist, but these tunes are lousy with studio pyrotecnics. I am donating this to my grandmother's senior home after listening just once.

4 out of 5 stars Brazil's answer to Diana Krall.......2005-01-08

This is the 1st cd of hers I've heard. It reminds me alot of Krall's early(jazzier) work. Most of the songs are instrumentals, only about a third of them are sung, but the piano(she's the pianist-like Krall) is great, very inventive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tribute!.......2004-11-21

Elaine Elias is an excellent jazz keyboardist . She is engaged with the real spirit of the saudade ( a clever term employed in Brazil to design something more than a farewell , you may consider it nostalgia but it goes far beyond this meaning) .
Anyway his magic fingers and velvet voice carries you to Rio de Janeiro and evoke the smooth mood and the seductive rhythm in every track .
Elias made a sincere tribute not only to Brazil but all his talented composers Vinicio de Moraes , Milton Nascimento, Jobim these pioneers of the bossa nova and glorious and timeless themes such Garota de Ipanema , Agua de beber, Chega de saudade , Dindi , March waters ,Brazil, Black Orpheus or one note samba are some of the most emblematic titles of that febrile land so filled of charm and mystery .

She may be on a different label, but the beautiful, Brazilian-born, New York-based pianist-vocalist Eliane Elias is still delivering soft and swinging music hip and hot enough for North and South America. On this CD, with her longtime bassist Marc Johnson and drummers Joey Baron and Paulo Braga, Elias's elegant and elastic piano springs from the influences of Herbie Hancock, Art Tatum, and the European classical masters. That mix is heard beautifully on the hushed-toned "Apareceu" and the moving "September" and "October," which feature Randy Brecker on flugelhorn and muted trumpet. "Manhattan" is a soulful tribute to Elias's adopted hometown, and her birth country is represented by the bouncy bossa nova-choro "Luar." Along with her spare piano solos and her breathy vocals, both in English and Portuguese, Elias drops some cool, club-ready, electronica-style remixes of the title track and "Balance," courtesy of the Brazilian DJ collective Bossacucanova. Whether the groove is acoustic or electronic, jazz or samba, it's all Eliane Elias, and it's all good. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Eliane Elias continues to show how great she really is.......2007-04-18

Kissed by Nature is simply one beautiful album. Her vocals and playing are just stunning. One reviewer has noted something to the effect that she's maturing into a truly great artist -- a master if you will -- and I totally concur. Note that she's also the producer of her work, so this is a musician who knows what she wants her sound to be and she's really nailed it with Kissed by Nature.

All I can say is 5 stars, 5 stars plus.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Kiss.......2004-03-07

As the other reviewers state , this is a very good combination of World Music through the voice of Eliane and her masterful hands . Bill Evans would have liked her playing and singing . Another reason to enjoy it . I do ...

5 out of 5 stars Like if Bill Evans could also sing.......2003-06-21

As an old Bill Evans fan and also a bossa nova/samba fan, I was pleased to find out about Elaine Elias. She combines both styles seamlessly. That's a very high compliment, because Evans was never involved in bossa nova or latin music. If you're a Bill Evans fan, check her out. Her basist, Marc Johnson, was the basist in Bill Evans's last trio.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2003-03-27

Eliane Elias has reached that point in a talented musician's life when skills have been established and true mastery begins. Her output during the past several years have shown a unique transposition of Brazilian music and American jazz. All too often such attempts sound like one form parroting or overwhelming the other but here Ms. Elias paints their colors with one brush. Her selection of musicians and her performance as composer, pianist, and singer are all flawless on this beautiful recording. This cd is a major event.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional!.......2002-12-21

One of today's most inspiring pianists, This CD has it all - the compositions are introduce some really beautiful melodies. With lush voicings and technical skill the groove is always right there. Not to mention the numerous transpostions and soft vocals, so tasteful. This may be her best yet!

Thanks Eliane!

The Brazilian pianist Eliane Elias is an ideal interpreter for the music of her compatriot Antonio Carlos Jobim. She's attuned to both its melodic and rhythmic nuances, and she's a potent improviser, able to develop Jobim's often graceful melodies and put her own stamp on them. Despite her Brazilian roots, Elias's approach is often more jazz oriented than bossa nova, and she provides a fuller portrait of Jobim than is usual. The songs stretch from the '50s to the '80s, and she thoroughly recasts some of the best-known tunes from the bossa nova period, like "Desafinado." Bassist Eddie Gomez, who first encouraged Elias's move to the U.S., is a full partner in the music, an aggressive and virtuosic presence providing constant stimulation with fleet counter lines, while drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Nana Vasconcelos combine to create a flowing, percussive backdrop. Elias's singing on "Don't Ever Go Away" looks ahead to her later vocal approach on the CD Sings Jobim. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Better than I anticipated.......2006-11-07

Very soothing and relaxing. Best for intimate settings with someone special or small groups. This played in the background at a cocktail party I hosted and I received so many queries on who was the musician that was playing so beautifully. Eliane is wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Elaine Elias in one of his best works........2004-07-30

Elaine Elias is a talented and extraordinary well gifted brazilian jazz pianist - Her appoach and arrangements made in every track of this album are simply gold dust .
Antonio Carlos Jobim represents one the supreme names in the bossa nova mood . His name is so clearly engaged to Brazil that Aguas de Marzo or Girl from Ipanema are titles that have surpased its own age and have signed its memories in the immortality . Think in Stan Getz , and Astrud Gilberto for instance among other famous examples . They won Grammy Award in 1964 thanks to their undeniable talent , and supported for the lyric mood of Jobim .
All these performances are of first rate and confirm once more the prodigious talent of this artist .
A must for any jazz lover !

5 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2001-07-22

Obviously, something brought you to this artist and this particular CD. For me, it was hearing her amazing rendition of Don't Ever Go Away on a local radio station, and this cut alone is worth the price of admission.

The title is a bit deceiving, however, and I really didn't get what I was expecting. When one thinks of Antonio Carlos Jobim, one thinks of bossa nova and memorable songs from one of the best composers ever. What Eliane Elias has done is marry these melodies with true jazz, giving each song a twist with improvisations that only a gifted jazz artist can produce. For those who know these melodies well, this will be a real treat. For those who don't, you may find yourself struggling to find the melody as she playfully dances around it.

The only dissapointment here is the last cut, where she attempts to sing Don't Ever Go Away. While her playing is superb, her singing really leaves me cold, and it was a dissapointing finish to an otherwise excellent CD. One more vocal would have dropped my rating to 4 stars.

Bottom line, if you love jazz, and Jobim, this CD is a real treat, and some excellent work by Elias. But this CD isn't for everyone, especially the person who is looking for a "first" Jobim CD, or someone who is expecting a more contemporary version of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars Unique blend of jazz and Brazil.......2000-01-25

I love this album and play it all the time. The material is great, and Elias has a unique approach which blends cool and vibrant jazz with a subtle Brazilian rhythmic flow. Her support too is excellent, with Eddie Gomez playing melodic bass lines that at times sound like a pizzicato 'cello or even a guitar! Both percussionists play with great subtlety and together they create a magical soundworld, heard to best advantage on the elusive 'Sabia'. This track and 'Zingaro' are truly haunting. Jazz fans will love what Eliane does with 'One Note Samba' and 'Desafinado' and there is plenty of lively and witty soloing along with the ballads. Highly recommended.

Pianist and singer Elaine Elias's Everything I Love, a foray into the classic American songbook, is a departure for the Brazilian-born pianist, whose previous releases have mostly covered the music of her native country (as on the excellent Eliane Elias Sings Jobim). But Elias sounds anything but out of place, bringing a refreshing sense of discovery and excitement to material that can sound a little too well worn in less-skilled hands. While Elias raises her warm and understated voice on a few tracks, this is mostly a piano-trio album that rotates between the veteran team of bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Jack DeJohnette and the younger talents of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen. There are moments where the two rhythm sections seem to divide into a neat old-guard and new-guard approach--like when McBride and Allen get funky on Elias's "Bowing to Bud"--but it's actually the tracks with Johnson and DeJohnette that stretch the farthest, particularly on the three tunes with long introductions, "If I Should Lose You", "Alone Together," and "Autumn Leaves." It's here that Elias touches the essence of the improvisational jazz, especially on "Introduction #1/If I Should Lose You", where the trio somehow morphs from a jagged, sensitive free-form beginning (reminiscent of DeJohnette's work with Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio) into the tune without sounding contrived or out of place. --Ezra Gale

I heard a track on the radio and loved it, came to amazon and bought a copy. The trio plays beautifully together. I'll buy more of her albums!

5 out of 5 stars very nice, traditional jazz CD.......2000-03-21

This CD is a joy to listen to. I had not heard Elias before purchasing this CD. She has created a CD filled with traditional jazz sound and nicely showcasing her exceptional abilities on the piano. Although she does not exhibit a strong singing voice, the several songs on which she sings will not disappoint.

Eliane Elias lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil, until she was 20 and has lived in New York City ever since. The 37-year-old jazz pianist has often combined Brazilian bossa nova and North American swing with appealing results, but now she has added Cuban songo, Argentine tango, and Puerto Rican guaracha for a broader look at Western Hemisphere music on an album aptly titled "The Three Americas." The disc fails to capture Latin rhythms at their most fervid, or jazz improvisation at its most ambitious, but it does combine elements of both into a bouncy, melodic music that should be readily accessible to almost any listener.

Elias has a light but agile touch at the keyboard, and, if this undermines the percussive aspects of the instrument, it also assists the fluidity of her harmonic imagination. She accompanies her piano lines with scat vocals on several numbers, but when she attempts a lead vocal on Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Brigas Nunca Mais," the results are underwhelming. She's much better off on original instrumentals such as "The Time Is Now" and "Caipora," where the Cuban and Brazilian rhythms percolated by percussionists Manolo Badrena and Café create a musical surf that she and flutist Dave Valentin can ride. Best of all is her stirring tribute to Astor Piazzolla on the tango "Chorango," which features Gil Goldstein on accordion. --Geoffrey Himes

3 out of 5 stars Caotic to say the least.......2004-05-06

I really like her music and playing , but this album is not that good . Cohesion is what is missing , too bad , not that there are no good tunes , there are , but kind of weak and disorginized for my taste ...

5 out of 5 stars Eliane's best CD so far, by far.......2003-08-31

This CD hooked me the minute I heard the first note of the first track. Eliane Elias is a tremendous talent, and on this one surrounds herself with great material and great musicians. "Up and Dawn" is fabulous, as are both "The Time Is Now", and "Chorango". The highlight of the CD, for me, seems to be the "lowlight" for a few underinformed 'editorial reviewers' I have read. Elias' renditions of Jobim's "Chega de Saudade" and "Brigas Nunca Mais" feature the virtuoso guitar playing of Oscar Castro-Neves alone with Eliane's bossa-style vocals and 'Jobim-esque' piano solos. Some have refered to these tracks as "lightweight". You listen to the brilliance of Castro-Neves' stunning samba/bossa rhythms along with Elias' heartfelt vocal phrasings and tell me who is crazy - me or the reviewers. My one nitpick is that I feel the CD goes one song over where it should end. Still, a 5-star recording.

5 out of 5 stars Her Best Work.......2003-03-19

I have 6 of her CDs and this is one that I listen to most. The balance between superb straight ahead playing, imaginative originals and of course Elaine's captivting yet unusual vocals makes this a great CD. Buy this CD - you will wear it out.

5 out of 5 stars The Three Americas.......2002-07-04

As a listening experience Elaine Elias is somewhere and something else. This is not just an album of bossas or sambas - this is the stuff you listen to when you need to get into the heart and soul of music. From a rhythmic perspective these pieces are flat out astounding and I've listened to the Milton Nascimentos the Tania Marias and the Chick Coreas. Let me tell you, they can all learn something from Elaine Elias - she outdoes them all.
The fact that she can also swing with the best of them is the delicious icing on the best cake you ever had.

I will be relishing this album for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars On the whole, a remarkable album.......1999-12-10

Eliane gives us a sample of her perceptions of the music of both Latin America and North America, forming a cohesive and interesting whole. I'm a bit biased because I'm in love with her voice, but the instrumentals really aren't ALL consistent--thus the 4 stars. The best tracks are by far the 2 vocal Jobim renditions of "Brigas, Nunca Mais" and perhaps my favorite Jobim tune of all "Chega de Saudade". These 2 songs alone make the album worth buying; they are at once seductive, subtle, and sublime. They capture the essence of bossa nova without sounding retrograde. The first track is also a wonderful treat, signifying to me the joy of awakening to a new day, a new era, a new love.

5 out of 5 stars L'intégrale à ne pas rater.......2006-12-14
