Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars great song, lousy cd single.......2004-06-11

Well, here it is, the lead single from the Erasure album that bombed badly. I have to confess that I hadn't heard Freedom prior to the Hits! DVD release, and I found it to be a very uplifting, pleasant song. I especially love when Andy sings, "You've got to believe."

However, as a CD single, this one is a dud. First off, it is a slimline-package import, which follows that horrible U.K. practice of making fans spend more money by releasing two cd singles of the same song, one with a b-side, and the other with remixes. I read that this practice is no longer allowed, which is good!

Being the Part 1 release, this CD single is short- the ENTIRE CD clocks in at just under 10 minutes, for three tracks!

The b-side, Better, does NOT rank among the greatest Erasure has released. I thought is was pretty boring, with Andy's drowned-out, treated vocals. Now, if you want to listen to some truly great b-sides, listen to High NRG (from Fingers & Thumbs), Dreamlike State (from Star), Somewhere Over the Rainbow (from Chorus), or Waiting for Sex (from Breath of Life).

Finally, the "acoustic" version of Freedom is anything but that. Instead of just a guitar-laden background, there are any number of electronic bleeps, blips, and cadences laid under and over the track. In other words, it's just a stripped-down remix, NOT an acoustic version, which would have been much Better (sic).

Anyhow, all these grumbles don't change my opinion of Freedom, which has been an unjustly neglected single.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven Has Come.......2001-05-11

As a fantastic musical group, Erasure has brought joy and happiness to me. Clarke and Bell, having astutely succeeded in producing another fabulous album of great admiration and stature, they continue to enlight euphonically the ears and minds of many fans. Continue your enthusiastic and exemplary musical work!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Mark picchiotti Remix.......2001-02-11

I'm a long time fan of MARK PICCHIOTTI and I haven't been dissapointed with his guitar mix of "Freedom", a flamenco party club track with more beats, guitar and additional vocals. Very good work. The "J.C's freedom of flight mix" is quite good but nothing spectacular. The Motiv 8 remix is very poor and boring, But is it truly a remix? Just faster beats....the original album version is one hundred times better.Just a bad remix from bad remixers. 4 stars for Mark!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2000-10-20

"Freedom" is a really wonderful song. Every time I listen to it, my heart and soul fill with a sense of joy and, appropriately, freedom. The b-side, "Better", is pretty good as well, but the acoustic version of "Freedom" is absolutely inspirational and very, very lovely. I can't wait for the new album!

5 out of 5 stars Freedom will come..........2000-10-18

I really enjoy this CD, unfortunately there are only 3 tracks. Freedom single version - absolutely brilliant combination of guitar and synth sounds and Andy's vocals. The second track is called Better - I love this song for its dance style. The third and the last song is a remix version of Freedom called Acoustic version - I don't know why it was named acoustic, the song is still just extended electronic version of Freedom with tons of backing vocals, which I enjoy...

4 out of 5 stars REASON TO BELIEVE..........2001-01-02

This is a somewhat uneven CD which runs the gamut from excellent to less than expected. Die hard Tim Hardin fans, however, will certainly enjoy it overall. If you are a die hard Tim Hardin Fan, then you will agree that this is a four star CD. If you are not, deduct one star from my rating.

"Simple Songs of Freedom" was Tim Hardin's only top 100 hit and, oddly enough, was written by Bobby Darin who never recorded it. It is, however, a wonderful anti-war song. Yet, Bobby recorded Tim Hardin's "If I were a Carpenter" and turned it into a top 10 hit, something Tim Hardin was never able to replicate. Go figure.

"Shiloh Town", written by Tim, is the best cut on this CD. A beautiful, wistful song, it represents Tim Hardin, who was a most expressive singer and minstrel at heart, at his best. Though he often classified himself as a jazz singer, his music and singing was an often provocative combination of jazz, blues, and folk all rolled into one. It was his ability to amalgamate these genres of music that made him unique.

If you want a truly all time great CD, get "Reason To Believe: The Best of Tim Hardin" which is a five star CD whether you are or are not a Tim Hardin fan. There is not one bad cut on that CD, and it best tells you what Tim Hardin was all about. That is the CD of which reviewer Daniel Dennis writes in his January 11, 2000 review, and it is to the songs on that CD to which he is referring. His review actually pertains to that CD and not to the "Simple Songs of Freedom" CD. I hope that this clears up any confusion.

5 out of 5 stars Misery bears Beauty.......2000-04-05

Tim Hardin was an enigma. How could such a convoluted, unhappy life could bear such utterly beautiful, haunting songs? This album was a very pleasant surprise..the first new material released in such a long time. Songs like 'Shiloh Town' show the effect of his emotive power has not diminished in time, despite his early departure from this world. (1980) Old standards are great to hear again too, great production values, care was obviously taken in the remastering. Buy and enjoy, again and again.

      5 out of 5 stars A Minstrel's Blues.......2000-01-12

Perhaps the finest collection yet of a criminally neglected artist's legacy of sensitive, confessional folk. Tim Hardin was a superb writer of pop miniatures, quiet songs about his life and loves that touchingly reflect our own hopes and struggles. Musicianship, taste and integrity are by-words for Hardin. Everyone knows 'If I Were a Carpenter' (here given the definitive reading). But listeners will find equal parts pleasure and revelation in 'If I Knew', one of the most beautiful recordings I have ever heard. Other tracks glitter and gleam - 'Misty Roses', 'Reason to Believe', and 'Hang On To A Dream'.

Hardin, who called himself a jazz singer, was so much more than just another folkie. His special gift for rendering with truth and sensitivity the pain and beauty of life is here captured in a special and tasteful set. Perfect Hardin, in fact.

4 out of 5 stars Ex- Procol Mates Make Good.......2007-03-31

Booted from Procol Harum just after "Whiter Shade of Pale" became a mega-hit, drummer Bobby Harrison and guitarist Ray Royer regrouped to form a Procol wannabe group, "Freedom". They were hired to provide a soundtrack for one of Italian filmmaker Tinto Brass' first sexploitation flicks, and the result was this surprisingly good album, "Black on White", which didn't see the light of day until 1999.

Harrison and Royer were fortunate enough to find a keyboardist whose talent was on a par with Matthew Fisher's, named Mike Lease. It's Lease's cascading organ fills that catch your ear on the first cut, "To Be Free."

Comparisons with the first Procol Harum album are unavoidable. "You Won't Miss" sounds similar to "She Wandered Through the Garden Fence" (and even more like "The Wee Small Hours of Sixpence"). "We Say No" is a madcap tune with a countrified fiddle, like Procol's "Mabel", and "Relation" ambles along like Harum's "Salad Days" with bassist/vocalist Steve Shirley sounding uncannily like Gary Brooker.
Other highlights: "Butt of Deception", which despite its duff lyrics, sports a nice baroque piano arrangement reminiscent of the American group Left Banke. And Ray Royer gets to riff heavily on a couple tunes, " Seeing is Believing", and "Decidedly Man", although he doesn't solo anywhere near as powerfully as Robin Trower.

The album never rises to the level of Procol Harum records in terms of musicality or intelligence, but its an interesting footnote to the band's history. Most of the credit for that goes to Mike Lease, who in addition to playing piano and organ, arranged the songs and scored some string arrangements.

This line-up of Freedom didn't last long. Harrison reformed the band as a power trio with Walt Monaghan (bass) and Roger Saunders (guitar) to play heavy blues rock for a couple more albums. Then he formed "Snafu".

4 out of 5 stars Freedom - 'Black On White' (Angel Air).......2007-01-17

Whoa!Possibly the best Freedom title,I've heard yet.But then again they only have maybe four or five lp's out on CD reissue.Either way, this is a darn good British progressive effort. This 16 track release was reportedly recorded in 1969,but wasn't put out until many moons later.Go figure.Tunes here that are well worth mentioning are the awesome "Attraction-Black On White/With You","Butt Of Deception","Seeing Is Believing" and the expressive "Decidedly Man".This must obviously be an early formation of the band. Can see that guitarist Ray Royer and drummer Bobby Harrison were joined up with organist Mike Lease and bassist/vocalist Steve Shirley.Never heard of those last two mentioned.A should-have.
