Defiant, sexy, playful, nervy, womanly, and wise, 1988's Raw Like Sushi was the opening salvo in Neneh Cherry's brilliant, if woefully underappreciated, career. The hit "Buffalo Stance," with its reworking of Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals vibe, found Cherry erroneously labeled as a rap artist. True enough, there are hip-hop elements on Raw Like Sushi, as well as pop, electronic, R&B, and dance, all gleefully mixed up in a progressive melange of beats, cultures, emotions, and grooves. Besides being fierce, funky, and one of the best debuts in memory, Raw Like Sushi helped redefine what women could do in the rigid realm of late-'80s African American music, and it sounds as good today as it did the day it was released. --Amy Linden

2 out of 5 stars Nothing on Raw Like Sushi matches "Buffalo Stance".......2004-12-20

I just recently heard "Buffalo Stance" on my local college radio station, and it brought back memories of the first time I heard it in back in the winter of 1989. It isn't difficult to see why this song was so popular back then; it had all the infectious grooves an excellent pop song should have. But there's a problem with the overall album of Raw Like Sushi: all the songs that surround "Buffalo Stance" don't even come close to matching its catchiness. Even the inexplicably praised "Manchild" is dull.

Find the single for "Buffalo Stance" if you can, and pick up a Salt & Pepper album as an alternative to Raw Like Sushi.

3 out of 5 stars The original "spice girl"........2004-04-28

This debut of hers may not be as impressive now, but in 1988 it was ahead of its time, and great on many levels. "Raw Like Sushi" also covers as many genres as it does topics. I still have the cassingle of "Buffalo Stance", and that song remains the best thing on here. However "Manchild" and "Kisses On The Wind" are catchy too. In fact, the album starts out very strong, then becomes too similar in the second half. But overall it's a good listen from this "Inna City Momma".

5 out of 5 stars Setting the template for female Urban Rap-Commentary...........2003-11-03

Considered one of the finest female talents to emerge from the U.K (with as much social awareness as today's Ms Dynamite),Neneh was a urban role model of sorts, during the late 80's and her rhetoric was one of social Urban issues, which confronted both men & women by imploring, men to respect women & take responsibility for their sexual actions (and any offspring as a result of their sexual encounters), and for women, to recognise their importance within their community & not remain gullible personalities for men to take advantage of. A suitably tough stance of all issues granted a generation of disaffected listeners, (although the music was so dance orientated, that It was easy to forget the underlining message), and so having influenced many with her commendable insight, it fall's to Ms Dynamite to continue what Neneh first started.

5 out of 5 stars This is TERRIBLE... I'll be buying a copy immediately.......2003-10-31

Manchild alone is worth the price of the CD. Her music is absolutely awful and brings a tear of joy to my eye. Good luck

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums.......2003-06-13

RAW LIKE SUSHI is the early 1990's debut album of English singer/rapper Neneh Cherry (incidentally, Neneh is the step-daughter of Jazz artist Don Cherry, and the sister of Eagle-Eye Cherry who found success recently with the hit single "Save Tonight"). She was a mix between Queen Latifah and Madonna, and her hit single "Buffalo Stance" (a song about hussling) had become a major international radio hit. It was certainly ahead of its time because it incorporated what today is almost formula: a rap verse with a singing chorus. What is remarkable is that Neneh Cherry performed both functions. Most songs that follow this formula are collaborations, assigning one talent to each genre.

Buffalo Stance is without a doubt the best song on RAW LIKE SUSHI, but there are many other gems as well. Kisses on the Wind is a fun song about the girl in the neighborhood who matured faster than everyone else, "the first girl to turn the boys on." Inner City Momma, Love Ghetto, and Phoney Ladies, are also great songs.

This was an incredibly promising debut that seemed to hint at a future superstar. I'm not sure what went wrong. What has happened to Neneh Cherry? Why isn't she still on the radio? I don't know. But I *do* know that RAW LIKE SUSHI is a great CD that anyone who likes strong women will enjoy.

Neneh's best album. Powerful lyrics with a strong groove. Quite different to her other albums. Highly reccommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Feels Like Home.......2004-04-23

An underrated and very interesting record, "Homebrew" is a fine effort that wisely captures the musical zeitgeist of the early nineties. Creative and diverse, Neneh Cherry`s sophomore release combines pop, soul, rap, dance, spoken-word and, most importantly, is one of the first albums that presents some songs that origin the genre known as trip-hop. Although a bit uneven, this is still a landmark record that manages to be relevant today. Some of the hip-hop oriented tracks are a tad dated now, but the electronic and sophisticated ballads "Move With Me", "Peace in Mind", "Somedays" and "Red Paint" are as excellent as ever. An unnoticed gem worth discovering, "Homebrew" as much to recommend.

Worthwile music.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2003-05-02

Bought many years ago, Homebrew still remains one of my favorite albums of all time. This CD is one of the few discs, where I don't have to utilize the skip button on my CD player. Unlike many other albums, where only one or two songs are great, all of the tracks on Homebrew are good. I particularly like the great variety this album offers. Including slower songs such as "Move With Me" and "Red Paint", as well as more upbeat pieces like "Money Love" and "Buddy X", this disc showcases Neneh Cherry's wide ranging talent. Personal favorites include: "Money Love", "Buddy X", "Somedays", "Trout",and "Red Paint".

5 out of 5 stars Loved for years.......2002-10-25

The eclectic Neneh Cherry hooked me with Buddy X years ago. She has a rough quality to her, a creative edge that makes her music both gritty and interesting. I recommend trying her as well as others like Cree Summer.

5 out of 5 stars Should have been a hit!.......2002-09-21

Many people had very high expectations for HOMEBREW, given how well her first CD (the excelllent "Raw Like Sushi") did. Of course, she had two top 10 singles off that one ("Buffalo Stance" and "Kisses on the Wind"). Unfortunately, her second CD didn't fare as well, which is a crime. I think that the main reason for its lack of success is also what makes this CD so great - it was years ahead of its time. Unlike the fairly straight-forward pop of her debut CD, the songs on HOMEBREW display a stunning amount of variety.

BUDDY X is more rock-oriented, TROUT (a deut with Michael Stipe) is alt-rock (and was minor modern rock hit), RED PAINT is a beautiful ballad, MONEY LOVE is urban R&B, and so on. It's really difficult to accurately describe this CD because it is so diverse and sonically challenging. A few years after its release, a prominent entertainment magazine named HOMEBREW one of the 100 best CD's of all time; however, since that time the CD seems to have been scandalously overlooked. Fans of great music of any genre will likely enjoy this CD. Most highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Armstrong's next classic score.......1999-08-31

Massive Attack member Craig Armstrong's second score is a haunting contrast to his brilliant companion piece for "Plunkett and MacClaine." Strikingly different in it's miniminalist form from his score to Jake Scott's action-comedy, this is strictly, haunting, and evocative noir mood music. Opening track Lissa is followed up by Neneh Cherry's new track "Twisted Mess." Lissa is one to repeat until it finally grows on you and when it does it's addictive. Armstrong's score is a somber masterpiece and is well aided by cuts from Massive Attack, Mazzy Star, and two throwaways by Gomez and Eagle-Eye Cherry that unfortunately break the mood. However, Armstrong's "Lissa montage" and "End Credits" close the soundtrack on a strong note.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars THIS ISN'T A MAN OR A WOMAN'S WORLD,IT'S NENEH'S WORLD!!.......2002-08-08

My wife Neneh returns after the quietly trendsetting "Homebrew" with this strong 1996 effort entitled "Man"."Man" was recorded mainly in London and Spain,Neneh's stepfather Don Cherry recently had died in her Spain home so many of "Man"'s songs have recurring themes of death, longing, and moving on.But it never gets depressing or weepy so put away the razorblade!:) Unlike "Raw Like Sushi" and "HomeBrew",Neneh doesn't focus her tasty, cultured blend in a more streetwise hip hop direction but more in a singer-songwriter premise."Man" is very song-oriented and the production is superior.Although "Raw" was funkier and "HomeBrew" was more textured,"Man" still shows folks simply weren't ready for Nen because she was so ahead of her time.

Among the standouts on the ten-track "Man" is the achingly beautiful, bluesy "Woman",a riveting take on James Brown's classic "It's A Man Man Man's World"."Woman" has that cinematic appeal, you know like a emotional action scene kind of quality
which explains why it was featured in the 1996 action flick "The Long Kiss Goodnight"."Woman" also had a great video which ganered Nen with many British music honors.
The tender "Feel It" features a very vulnerable Neneh singing the tale of a young man's growing up.Although the piano version that was included on the UK-issued CD single of the song makes the song feel more 'alive'.
The funky, agitated rock of "Kootchi" shows a return to Neneh's appealing,sass-filled sexual side.Unlike say,Madonna or even the scrumptous Janet Jackson,Neneh's sexuality was more accesible and warm.More human. Here was one beautiful woman who seemed touchable and attainable. And authentic."Kootchi" and "Woman" also show that Neneh's vocals have matured.
The lithing "Carry Me" gracefully tells the tale of a young girl's death from the dying girl's perspective."Golden Ring" is a power ballad sung in a flamenco,Spanish style which explains the influence that the flamenco scene in N's dwelling of Spain had taken.
Now many fans grumbled at the three "older" tracks featured on the '96 release of "Man".N's haunting remake of Marvin Gaye's
"Trouble Man" had been featured on the 1995 Marvin Gaye tribute album;"7 Seconds" a haunting anthem beheading racism that was a HUGE hit across the globe but barely heard here in the States, and "Together Now" which was featured on Tricky's "Nearly God" LP(Tricky had wrote an album for Neneh but she decided not to release it;rumors of an EP of those songs persist). But since all three tracks are great, age does nothing but make them sound better.

"Man" is more atmospheric and leaning towards trip hop and rock than N's previous albums. It's obvious with this album that Nen was trying to pull off a tough move:being SMART,being HERSELF,
yet still being ACCESSIBLE.Nelly Furtado and Missy Elliot would play from Neneh's playbook to more commerically successful results.Unfourtantly,"Man" never was released in the US since N's label Virgin was going through a merger so sadly,"Man" and it's brillance never got to see the light of day in the US.

"Man" is worth the hefty US import pricetag.Hopefully N.C. will finally get her true props one day for all the ground she's broken.

5 out of 5 stars This talented artist is 3 for 3!.......2002-03-11

With her third release, Neneh Cherry continues to evolve as an artist to be reckoned with critically, although unfortunately not commercially (at least in the U.S.A). That is a shame because Neheh is not a puppet with producers and writers pulling her chords. She's a fully self-directed writer, performer who has backed away from using her obvious beauty to sell a few more records.

Her vocal chops have matured and the production on this release is as flawless as it was on her 2nd release. She sings in an immediate and strong fashion while exposing her vulnerabilities. Although some of my words may lead some to believe that Neneh would seem like a self-important artist, her music is so accesible that I can't fathom why she has not taken off like a rocket. Listen to "Woman" and "7 Seconds" and I dare you not to become a fan.

I have not heard anything from this artist since she released this way back in the late 1990's. If Virgin released her from her contract or dropped her, won't anyone else work with this artist so that she can continue to bring us positive music with a sound that is so alive that it is almost surreal.

5 out of 5 stars A Great follow up to "Homebrew".......2001-09-10

I bought "Raw Like Sushi" and liked it, so when "Homebrew" came out, I bought it too. And I LOVED it. But then Neneh Cherry disappeared from the music scene. Now, finally, there is "Man." "Man," for me, fulfills the promise of "Homebrew." It has that same Neneh Cherry style that defies definition; part R&B, part Soul, part Rap, part Pop. Her voice is etherial, and her melodies get Under Your Skin (anyone get the "Red Hot & Blue" joke there?). If you enjoyed "Homebrew," then place your order for "Man" right now. You won't be disappointed.

        4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful CD.......2001-09-01

This is a beautiful CD. I don't understand why it was not released in the United States. As in her other recordings, Neneh covers a lot of genres in this one. "Woman" is a great song. I swear I heard a version in Spanish on the radio in Seoul the other day.

2 out of 5 stars One song to enjoy.......2001-06-26

It took me forever to track this cd down and after listening to it, and I really tried to like it after all of the trouble, I couldn't force myself to like it. The only track that I like is the one from "Long Kiss Goodnight."

Neneh is applying a more alternative sound to this cd. I like "alternative" music, it's just rock music, but I don't think this is all that listener friendly. Just my opinion.

        3 out of 5 stars MIXED CHERRIES.......2002-12-12

This CD was released after the European success of MAN, an album that never was released in the states. At 7 tracks, there is only a few worth hearing. La Funk MOB does a remix of WOMAN, that is spectatcular. There are 2 remixes of FEEL IT, and the DOCTOR L B remix is the standout. Also witness AIR remix KOOTCHIE. A good spin, but the other tracks are made for trendy background music for cafe's. This would be the last official NENEH CHERRY CD as she dove into collaborations with AKASHA, DREEM TEAM, and contributed songs on various soundtracks. Neneh has also popped up on the recen 1 Giant Leap CD and guested on Eagle EYE CHERRY's latest.
