Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez spent $53 million to pay loving tribute to the vintage hundred-thousand-dollar exploitation fare that inspired Grindhouse's two-movies-for-the-price-of-one thrill ride. Tarantino's half of the exercise (which also includes Robert Rodriguez's self-scored Planet Terror) features another effusive slice of the director's eclectic musical sensibility to underscore its manic tale of stuntman/psycho-killer Kurt Russell and his muscle-car-fueled exploits. Tarantino works from a familiar formula that variously mixes evocative, semi-obscure Italian film cues from Morricone and Dinaggio, contrasting slices of '60s catalog from the great Jack Nitzsche and Brit Invasion also-rans DDDBM&T and some '70s fodder from both ends of the Top 40 via Smith and T. Rex, also stirring in a savory mid-disc run of R&B that stretches from PG&E's upbeat read of "Stagger Lee" through more familiar fare from Joe Tex, Eddie Floyd, and the Coasters. The director also serves up a couple of those deliciously off-kilter obscurities that have come to be his musical trademark as a coda: Eddie Beram's thumping "Riot in Thunder Alley" and April March's infectious ditz-pop take on Serge Gainsbourg's loopy "Chick Habit." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars love the music.......2007-07-16

don't really appreciate the fact that 3 tracks are dialogs.
i own all tarantino soundtracks and before this one i never really minded the dialogs.. on this one, however, they seem a little out of place.
other than that, i agree with other reviewers who cannot believe the music tarantino digs out for his films! why isn't any of this music the matter of general knowledge? it's great!
been listening to the CD on the way to the coast and back, some 10 times over, and i haven't gotten tired of it yet.
for rest, listen to sampler here on amazon. my favs are track 10 and 16.
enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars DO IT AGAIN!.......2007-06-03

The movies were great - I went to see it 4 times and I am digging in my house to go see it again!

The sounds tracks are just as good - check out the book - it's has the dialogs in it..............Useless talent# 10!

5 out of 5 stars Astounding.......2007-06-03

One listen and you're hooked. At least 6 songs that are fantastic that there's no way I would have encountered without QT. Thanks man, should I expect any less?

4 out of 5 stars Coasters question.......2007-05-31

Another entertaining soundtrack by Tarantino - well worth having. I'm curious about the version of the Coasters' "Down In Mexico" though. It's very different from the one on "Very Best of the Coasters." I can't tell if it's just remixed or another version entirely. I hope some R&B expert can comment on that. Finally, though, another great collection of very diverse sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Once Again.......2007-05-15

Once again, Tarantino offers us a soundtrack with "dialogue clips" that we will listen to over and over again. Buy it. It belongs in your "Tarantino" soundtrack collection right next to all the others.

If I had to give a "Where Are They Now" award, Group Home would probably receive it. Group Home's debut CD "Livin' Proof" was a rememerable CD back in late 1995. I first heard these guys on Gang Starr's "Hard To Earn" LP. What grabbed my attention to get this LP was that everybody said that this was some of DJ Premier's best production. Heck, it's a blessing to have a couple of tracks produced by Primer, let alone an entire album. I have to say this is the best production I heard comming from the East Coast in a good minute. If you heard the beats to "Serious Rap Sh..." and "Up Against The Wall" (and thats just some of the songs here with awesome production). It seemed like Premo just held back his production from Gang Starr and and Jeru, and gave them to Group Home. A lot of people wondered if he gave those same beats to artists like Nas or Jeru The Damaja what would the results would be. Hell, if he gave the beats to the wackest rapper out right now, it would almost sound like a second comming of Illmatic or such. They're THAT good.

As for Group Home (Melachi the Nutcracker & Lil' Dap), they don't do a bad job holding down the rhymes. In fact that is the only inferior in this album. I've heard better rhymes, but I've also heard way worse. Especially with all the music comming out today, they make this duo sound like lyrical masters. "Suspended In Time" would be a good song from a lyrical standpoint. Another excellent song is "2 Thousand" (hence my review title) with some good rhymes. Guru and Big Shug comes in for the song "Serious Rap Sh..", as well as Jack The Ripper and Smiley The Ghetto Child rhyme on the song "The Realness". Jeru The Damaja talks at the end of one of the tracks as well.

So this album is excellent for fans of Gang Starr and Primo's production. This album has some of the best beats that he has made in his career. Although Lil' Dap and Melachi's rhyme skills aren't that great, they don't make this CD a waste. If possible, search for the instrumentals for this LP, because you'll be glad that you did. But this album is also a keeper. They followed up with another album in 1999, that I will check out as well.

4 out of 5 stars 1995 pure premo dope.......2007-01-27

A dope disc of smooth beats by DJ Premiere and hard rhymes by lil dap and the nutcracker. It takes you back to better times. The lyrics are not graduate level but overall it hits the mark. If you enjoy 90's gritty hip hop, get it fast before it goes out of print.

3 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing beats, borderline awful lyrics.......2007-01-24

In the early to mid-90's, DJ Premier could do no wrong. Building on his legendary production work on Gang Starr's "Daily Operation" (1992) and "Hard to Earn" (1994), Jeru's classic "The Sun Rises In the East" (1994), and Nas' seminal "Illmatic" (1994), he released perhaps his last classic effort with Group Home's "Livin' Proof". Lil' Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker were the last of the Gang Starr Foundation to release a record (Big Shug was also member, but he seemed to get lost in the shuffle), and it seems that Primo kept some of his best beats for last. Songs like "Supastar", "Tha Realness", "Suspended In Time", and "Livin' Proof" prove that nobody could touch him in the arena of gritty NYC boom-bap.

Unfortunately, the vocals can't match the production. Dap's lyrics are mediocre but tolerable, mainly thanks to his unique voice. Melachi's verses are, for the most part, terrible. But this album gets over on beats alone, and none of the lyrics are bad enough to make songs unlistenable. If you're a DJ Premier fan, you must own this. If you're an MC, find the album's instrumental, throw it on your Tech 12's and start freestyling. Enjoy one of the last great albums released before Puff Daddy changed NYC production forever with Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa" and the remix of "One More Chance".

5 out of 5 stars A focused masterpiece.......2006-08-24

Group Home's 1995 debut album "Livin' Proof" is a gorgeous and beautiful hip hop album that is certainly very underappreciated. This album teams the MC duo Lil' Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker, two talented and unknown teenage rappers from New York, with the legendary DJ Premier on the mixing boards, arguably the greatest hip hop producer of all time. The result is a truly special and unique masterpiece. The majority of the enjoyment in "Livin' Proof" comes from the production, which is the most diverse and my favorite of his entire career. His sound is very focused, and the theme of "low budget environment" is played very well. Premo's beats sound less polished than on a Gang Starr record, and instead of his usual horns and instrumentals, he often uses heavy, creative sampling, and a simple drumkit and keyboard to make simple, beautiful beats. His music has a very nostalgic feel to it, and this production is experimental without sounding at all futuristic. His music really is capable of evoking a lot of feelings and emotions. Lyrically I am impressed with Dap and Melachi, and I really can't begin to comprehend the three and four star ratings bashing these two rappers. I guess in 1995 people were only used to hearing Guru and Jeru the Damaja over Premier beats, and granted Dap and Melachi are not quite on their level, but they really do a phenomenal job on the mic. Despite their young age, they have a very worldly intelligence, and they speak of life in an often depressed, downcast tone that comes from living in such abject poverty. Despite their tough situations, though, they continue to look forward. "Livin' Proof" is an amazing rap album that is really unlike any other I've heard, and I recommend it highly to all types of music listeners.

The album begins with a 40-second intro that displays why DJ Premier is one of the top producers of all time. With just a piano and drumset, he makes one of the coolest little beats I've ever heard, and it just eases you into the album so well. "Inna City Life" introduces Dap and Melachi, both dropping some raw philosophy gained from years in the ghetto, and Premo's simple, staticky beat is hard and gritty. The beat to "Livin' Proof" is raw but attractive, simple and ear-catching, and Melachi and Dap establish themselves as new young truth-kicking rappers. The chorus samples Wu-Tang and Nas in Premo's signature two-bar fashion. "Serious Rap S..." has an electronic, ultra-funky beat that will make your head bob instantly, the raps show great flow. A highlight of the disc is "Suspended in Time," a very nostalgically and thoughtfully produced track with verses to match. "Sacrifice" has cool guitars on the production, and harder raps than usual. "Up Against tha Wall (Low Budget Mix)" has bouncy vibes and my favorite lyrics on the album, expressing the depressed and pessimistic view of inner city life. "4 Give My Sins" has some muted horns and a simple beat, with introspective lyrics. Premo steals the show on "Baby Pa," making not one but two completely dope beats on this track. I love "2 Thousand," with its winding deep piano and great chorus ("95 is yours, 2000 is mine, and we walkin' through the ghetto and the feeling is fine..."). It's followed by "Supa Star," another classic single. My favorite song on the whole album is "Up Against tha Wall (Getaway Car Mix)." It's another mix to the song earlier on the album, but Premo's slower, simple piano lined-beat is absolutely perfect, and he engineers a nice chorus for this mix. The album ends with the tough song "Tha Realness."

"Livin' Proof" is an album so exceptional and musical that I don't think you'd have to be a rap fan to enjoy it. In my mind, it showed the world that the legendary Premier didn't need Guru or Jeru to make an awesome record, and I think this is maybe his greatest musical accomplishment. It is really unlike a Gang Starr album in every way, but Gang Starr fans will probably enjoy it immeasurably as well. I could not praise or recommend "Livin' Proof" any higher, this is really a one-of-a-kind type of album.

It's a bit surprising that Pantera waited until 1997 to release a live album, considering how brutal and powerful the band had been in concert. At an average Pantera show, it would not be unusual to see security evicting overzealous fans, and club bathrooms filled with bloody wads of paper towels from mosh pit injuries. Official Live 101 Proof captures the group in its natural, violent element, combining abrupt, barbed riffs with pulse-pounding beats and furious vocals. The record spans Pantera's career, from the classic guitar lick of "Cowboys from Hell" to the fuzzbomb fury of "Suicide Note Pt. 2" (from album The Great Southern Trendkill). As an encore, the band offers album buyers two new studio tracks, the bluesy bonecrusher "Where You Come From" and the grinding piledriver "I Can't Hide." As the fortress of alternative rock continues to crumble, Pantera stomp vindictively through the rubble, their metallic legacy intact. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pantera Live CD.......2007-01-27

The CD has a very good list of songs from Pantera's repertoire. However the recording quality leaves something to be desired. I've purchased live albums from other bands that sounded almost as good as the original recordings. I've only listened to the CD in my car stereo, but had to do adjustments on the Bass, Treble and Mid-range to get a decent sound.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a live album.......2007-01-22

The production is very good--better than a lot of live albums. OL has a lot of the "classic" Pantera tracks and really is a kind of "best-of" collection. There are a coulple of new studio tracks as well, although they're kind of weak. Pantera's material really began falling-off after Far Beyond Driven and it shows on this collection.

This is an especially good buy if you're new to Pantera and don't want to buy all the individual discs.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite pantera album out of all of them.......2006-03-15

The Anti-Pantera crowd seems to be posting just to post, screaming for some desperate attention that they dont get in their lonely teenage lives...What's even better is hearing then yak on and on about how Dime couldnt play his guitar....these are the people who have never picked up a guitar, or if they did, it was briefly...Anyway, this is my favorite Pantera album. It captures what the show must have been like and the pure energy of a Pantera concert, it also captures one of the best metal guitar players in action. If you like good heavy metal, pick this album up

3 out of 5 stars Pantera live has room for improvement.......2006-02-25

official live 101 proof from what I remember about it and its been awhile since I have heard it(even tho I own it), is not one of the greatest live metal albums of all time. although it is good it could stand for improvements especialy in the sound quality.

one thing that really ticks me off about live albums from any band in any genre of music is the sound quality. some bands you cant really hear them playing the music so much as you can hear the crowd and background noise kinda muffling the music making for poor audio sound.

I have three live albums which are better in sound quality than official live. AC/DC's live album, Slipknots live album 9.0, and a live album from my city that KISS did on there rock the nation tour in 2004 when they recorded there live shows during that tour and gave each city a the recording of the concert they had just been too! In these three live cd's, the music sound quality is near studio sound quality. you can hear the crowd but the crowd and unwanted background noise is not drowning out the music. kinda like if you were to take a tape recorder to the show and record the whole concert. youd probably end up with a tape of which the crowd and background noise outdrained the bands music.

while Official live: 101 proof is still an awesome live album, I do hope someday the surviving members of Pantera reissue it and enhance the sound quality. Pantera are some of the heaviest of metal of its generation, even at times beating the likes of MetallicA and Megadeth as far as heavy goes.

so for those that just want a live metal album that they can pop in at home and listen too, this album is definetly worth it! but if your looking to get this because it's like a "best of" cd and features tunes not found on the "best of" cd or you just want a live album, of which you can pop in your car and cruise too and all that like I do, then this is not that live album and I would recommend sticking to the studio albums or if you dont want that many cd's hanging around your car for fear of them getting stolen or whatever, then buy Pantera's greatest hits or just burn your own cd of studio songs you like! I guess if I took the time to listen to this cd again it may gain 4 stars but because of the poor sound quality I remember it being, I can give it no more than 4 stars.

Aside from a multimedia pastiche he did for England's millennium celebration, this soundtrack for Philip Noyce's film marks Peter Gabriel's first full slate of original recordings in nearly a decade. In the meantime, Gabriel's globally ambitious Real World musical mini-empire has taken precedence; the knowledge the musician gleaned there is immediately apparent in his film cues here. While the booming electro-tribal rhythms of previous Gabriel work come instantly into play, there's a sense of spacious mystery that's perfectly emblematic of the story's Australian outback setting. Gabriel's penchant for dense aural construction gives way to an ambient soundscape punctuated by Aboriginal percussion, didgeridoo, and bird song, and occasionally washed over by lolling tides of synth and samples. It's an atmosphere that, like the Aboriginal world it evokes, is nearly devoid of traditional melody, but one infused with a gripping, almost subliminal power. "Cloudless" then brings in haunting indigenous voices as well, intertwining them with a wordless, Westernized choral to emphasize Gabriel's compelling world music vision. --Jerry McCulley

If you are expecting a Peter Gabriel Rock album, stay away from this CD.
Forget all the hits you already know from PG. and listen to this great Soundtrack.
Inspired by field recordings collected in areas as diverse as the Senegal, Egypt, Turkey and other places, Long Walk Home achieves a cumulative effect of all Gabriel's fascination with world music, delivering fantastic fusion of ancient and modern sounds ultimately transcends both geography and time.
As far as I am concerned, this is Gabriel's best film work, deserving a serious consideration, as his finest music of any kind.
This is one of my favorite Soundtrack music in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Once again, Gabriel shines.......2006-07-05

Gabriel's future works will always be compared to 1989's "LAST TEMPTATION...." and this one clearly stands close. "Gracie's Recapture," "The Return," and "Running..." were remixed together for the first movie preview of Gibson's "THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST" and would probably serve as a better score to that movie (no offense to Debney) than to this one. Still, Gabriel's score does work for this film, though only a handfull of tracks will be listened to repeatedly.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Rabbit Proof Fence.......2006-02-01

This is one of my most favourite scores of all time, and I own over 400 movie scores. What Peter Gabriel has done here as a composer is infuse a film with a vibrancy and heart breaking power that it wouldn't have had otherwise. It's such a mature and wonderful piece of work, one has to wonder why Gabriel doesn't compose more films.
Rabbit Proof Fence has been labelled as pointless background music by some. Hogwash. Yes, there are a few stretches on this album that are meant to be quiet, unobtrusive moments of background underscore, but to label this score as such is denying it of the power this CD contains. There are moments in this score, like Running to the Rain, Gracie's Rapture, and The Return that are so beautiful, so stunning, so tragic, so uplifting (this isn't a contradiction - you'll understand when you hear it yourself) that it's impossible to express it's greatness in words. And then the two songs at the end, Sky Blue Reprise and Cloudless, take you up to heights that few pieces of music can.
Gabriel here proves that he's more than a great singer/songwriter, as he did with Passion and to a lesser extent, Birdy; he's also one of the strongest film composers out there. This is truly one of the best CD's I own. To listen to it is a spiritual experience for me as the music picks up and soars to beautiful heights. I'm serious. This is wonderful stuff. Pick it up as soon as you can. I promise you won't be sorry.
cheers
KZ

4 out of 5 stars interesting connections.......2005-12-21

One thing I found particularly interesting is this:
Peter Gabriel did the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's 1989 film "The Last Temptation of Christ", which was of course entitled, "Passion".

Is it just coincidence, then, that "Running to the Rain", one of the best songs on "Long Walk Home", obviously also by Peter Gabriel, was clearly used as the main theme to advertise the theatrical television trailers of Mel Gibson's recent film "The Passion"? Am I the only one who noticed this at the time??

Also, while watching "The Passion" in the theater, I was absolutely convinced that Peter Gabriel had done the soundtrack to that film as well, since it sounded so startlingly similar to both "Long Walk Home" and "Passion". seems there was quite a lot of "borrowing" going on with John Debney's composing methods and inspirations... hmm..

anyway, this is a great album. very contemplative and spacious. not as fast paced or rhythmic as Passion, but fits the atmosphere and theme of "Rabbit Proof Fence" quite well.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2004-09-15

First heard elements of this composition on the pre-marketed "Passion of the Christ" trailer released by Icon Films in late 2003, prior to Newmarket sponsorship.
The music in many of these tracks will bring one to tears, and musically there are fewer more talented than Peter Gabriel. His skill beams thru in this pensive, dark, and triumphant film score. A must-have for those who appreciate modern classics.

If the fans who grooved to Believe still clamor for more, there's little doubt that Living Proof will quickly achieve the same chromatic status as Cher's new hair color. The multitalented entertainer is placing a safe bet on the fortitude of her latest incarnation as disco diva to support a second album of dance club tracks. Other pop femme fatales of late are experimenting with subtleties in rhythm and nuance, but subtlety is not one of Cher's selling points. She's been quoted as comparing "Song for the Lonely" to U2's sound; indeed, through Cher's discofied ears, there are brief moments where the track riffs on U2's euphoric "Beautiful Day" and the two songs share a hopeful sentiment. "Love So High" and "Body to Body, Heart to Heart" throw the prerequisite Latin guitar and percussion into the mix, and the buzzing back beats on her cover of "Love One Another" (last heard on Dutch singer Amber's self-titled release) make it one of the CD's tightest songs. Cher's vocals--a taste we've had more than 35 years to acquire--are strong, and her production team enhances her limited range with studio tricks. Living Proof will appeal more to Cher's devoted fans than electronica purists, but her missive is relished by both sects: leave your worries at the door and get out on the dance floor. --Beth Massa

Album Description

Her first album since 1998's quadruple-platinum Believe and its platinum #1 title track, the pop, dance-friendly 'Living Proof' features the Diane Warren-penned 'When You Walk Away' - unavailable on the European version (replaces 'You Take It All'). Produced by the likes of Chicane, Rick Nowells and Norwegian production team Stargate, 'Living Proof' impressively captures Cher at her seductive dancefloor best. Warner Brothers Records.

Alive agian (15/10)One of my favorite songs!

The music's no good without you (14/10) one of her better dance songs

Rain Rain (10/10) It has a great beat to it and I love it.

Real love (10/10) upbeat and great to sing along to!

Love so high (9/10) not the best, but it is a good song.

Body to body, heart to heart (5/10) its an ok song, but not my favorite.

Love is a lonely place without you (15/10)Kind of dark, but its awesome!

5 out of 5 stars ...Song For The Lonely..........2007-02-16

First off I want to say that I am gay male and I always knew I never liked Cher until I saw Cher's daughter who is gay and I spoke with some of my gay friends about Cher and my gay friends was so surprised that I didnt like Cher just because I never knew about her until the clubs finally came out "Believe" and I was like "who sang this song?" and I asked my friends who sang this song and they told me "It was Cher" and I was freaked out and I opened my eyes and mouth wide open I mean I couldnt speak for words I was surprised it was her and I went and bought "Believe" album was my very first CD I bought of hers. Then when when the "Living Proof" album came out the club played this song "Song For The Lonely" and I am hooked with Cher just like Madonna!!! Because Cher and Madonna supports gay people and gay people support Cher and Madonna as well and that's called even!!! I didnt bother buying 80's albums because I was born in 1980 and I never like older music because in 90's and 00's has the hottest beats compare in the 80's and under 80's!!!

4 out of 5 stars a formula that works for cher.......2006-09-30

the song "believe" really got me hooked on "disco" Cher.
let's hope she keeps this style (as found on believe and living proof) from here on out. it really works for her!

hightlights:
"song for the lonely"
"different kind of love song" (my favorite!)
"alive again"
"the music's no good without you"
"love is a lonely place without you"
and "when the money's gone" (this one is a bit overdone though)

songs that could have been left out:
"rain, rain" and "body to body, heart to heart"
PURE FILLER! these two songs are a poor attempt at r&b/pop.
stick with the dance cuts!

4 out of 5 stars Better than "Believe" - and Cher reveals herself to be a fine singer. .......2006-06-05

I think Cher is seriously underestimated as a singer, and when you compare how she sings now compared to decades ago, it is even more impressive.

Living Proof is a hard driving club dance album, and as such it is top notch. The first four songs of Living Proof are really terrific Dance floor break outs, and include her two big hits Song for the Lonely" and "Different Kind of Love Song."

"Rain Rain" really shows off Cher's singing ability, and gives us a breather from all the electronic enhancement. (nothing wrong with that though - this is a club dance album after all).

The next three songs are a bit less intereseting, but 9-12 again give us some really good stuff. I especially like "Love is a Lonely Place Without You."

Also Living Proof is engineered and mixed to the hilt - the wah-wah guitar effect was great in the song Believe, and the current "The Music's No Good Without You.' but otherwise becomes a bit too intrusive and overdone. A few more purely acoustic numbers would have been nice.

Overall, Living Proof is very similar to Believe, but is more substantial I think, with stronger more complex arrangements and surely the finest singing Cher has ever done.

5 out of 5 stars not what i thought it would be.......2006-05-27

yes, i'm a madonna fan but i also love cher...

now i very hestitant in buying living proof, because i thought i would end up like another dance record, very repetitive, poorly constructed with hardly any effort...but i was wrong...the majority of the songs are about love, war, etc...and i think they are very well written...living proof i personally think is far better than believe...dont get me wrong, believe was good, but it felt empty...only 9 new songs and the 10th being a boring remake of we all sleep alone as a filler...too many fillers on that album and it felt like she didnt even try...but living proof, there aren't any fillers and it feels like cher did try with this album...

Song for the lonely (8/10) not my favorite song, but still good

Different kind of love song (10/10) maybe its just the Cd, but this version is slightly altered and shorter than the version found on cher's very best of compilation...i love this song though, great beat and fun to dance to

Alive agian (10/10) another great song

The music's no good without you (15/10) her best dance song, it would be great for clubs...and the video is amazing i tell you

Rain Rain (5/10) not my favorite but it is starting to grow on me

Real love (5/10) same as rain rain

Love so high (8/10) another good song

Body to body, heart to heart (1/10) the only song i cannot stand on living proof...a bad version of Dov'e l'amore

Love is a lonely place without you (10/10) a great dance song, with a kinda dark feeling to it...its kind of a sad song in a way too, how she sings it makes me kinda sad...

Love one another (15/10) a great song with a very good message to it, "a fist is just a hand, it can come apart" is my favorite line...and for some reason, in the booklet, some of the words are different than from what she actually sings...

When you walk away (10/10) good song

When the money's gone (8/10) not my favorite favorite but its a good song with, yet again, another great message to it...good way to end the album

5 out of 5 stars This album deserves 100 stars keep these songs being played and sung........2005-11-05

This is one of the best CDs of any Kind that I have ever owned. I am really speaking of the tape that I bought of this when it came out. I think I had one of the great evenings of my entire life the second or third time I listened to this on one evening in 1983 or 1984 beside a little lake where I lived in Opa Locka Florida, at a time when i thought things were pretty bad for me, but just listening to this music and these words hit the spot.

In justice to Haggard, this music was recorded more than 22 years ago. Some of the players in the great touring and studio bands that he put together during the late 1970s and the early 1980s are no longer living or have retired from music.

There is something so powerfully romantic about "The Red Bandana" --is that about Bonnie Owens????? and "Roses in Winter," something so hot, real and almost poetically wild drunk but sweet about "Got Lonely Too Early This Morning," and oh "Driftwood," and "I didn't mean to love you."

What really hits one, even though I am delighted by Hag's singing and Bonnie's backups, and the whole band, is these songs. The quality of these songs and the way they speak to mature life, and not soap opera bulb gum triteness, is remarkable. These songs really are adaptable across genre. This album should bne appreciated not only by Hag fans. CW, Folk, and even Jazz singers looking for material or looking to see how a great artist puts a great album of together need not only to listen and enjoy, but to study and keep these songs being played and sung.

Thank you Hag wherever you are!

4 out of 5 stars I Liked the Songs that Merle does so well.......2005-09-29

I have heard and have on CDs most of these songs. I found there was one little song on this CD that was just so good.I had not heard it before, but Merle has so many good songs it's hard to get all of them on one CD. The name of the song is, "I didn't mean to love you" it is well worth getting this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2004-07-07

Great CD. Most disappointing thing was when I got to see Merle live in San Antonio and he didn't play any of the songs from this CD. I think it is his very best stuff, better than most of his more well-known music. If you want some real country music, get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, period........2003-12-15

Hag's voice has deepened by this album and he uses that instrument very well here. This recording is as artistically superior as his Capitol stuff, but with a different sound and different topics. The whole album fits together, from the theme of running from life and trying to forget one's problems, to memories (false or imagined?) of a loving childhood, to staring all the problems a man can have in the face and declaring that there'll be roses in the winter because love is all we have to have (though you know a tough road lies ahead). A great combination of songs, singing, and musicianship. That this is basically a bargain bin album tells you all you need to know about the state of country music today. This album deserves a remastered, deluxe version with liner notes for godsakes.

5 out of 5 stars I love the Hag!.......2003-05-09

What?! Only three reviews of this beautiful record?! I think everyone should own this album. Merle Haggard is a true artist.

4 out of 5 stars An album brimming with potential........2007-05-26

Proof's second full-length album, Searching For Jerry Garcia, was released in 2005; a year before his untimely death. I didn't check out this release until last year, after Proof had already lost his life; I was never too big on his work in D12, and neither he nor Bizarre(who both had albums come out within a small span of time) interested me enough to pick up their albums. Following his passing, all of the praise this album received wasn't surprising, but as someone who'd never listened to it, it seemed like another matter of a deceased artist getting unwarranted acclaim; I had to check for myself to see how it faired.

Initially, it didn't click with me. Having been inspired by the recent influx of Detroit-styled underground hip-hop coming out lately(J Dilla's extensive recordings, Black Milk, Phat Kat, etc), I decided to revist this album lately, and I must say, this album is highly dope. It's got a very non-Shady sound to it; in fact, its influences are heavily rooted in the Detroit underground scene. Funk, soul, and traditional hip-hop are all represented thoroughly on this album musically; and Proof rhymes over these dope beats with equally potent rhymes. If anyone ever thought Proof was a two-trick pony, relying only on D12's horrorcore and goofy antics, those beliefs are proven terribly wrong on this release.

Tracks like Forgive Me(which features a hypnotizing 50 hook) and Kurt Cobain reveal Proof's introspective, and brooding personality to the masses. In retrospect, it's awfully depressing that Proof was as obsessed with death as he was, but this style of paranoid influenced hip-hop has long been a staple of hip-hop since the murders of 2Pac and B.I.G. It's not all about melancholic, and angst ridden hip-hop though; Proof delivers some of the finest acid-influenced rap in recent memory. Gurls Wit Da Boom and Purple Gang are two of the finest examples of this, as they're funky anthems that any hip-hop head, no matter how cynical, should be able to get down and groove with.

Rest assured, there's plenty of the gun-toting rhymes abound on this release. Proof's complexity as a lyricist, and reflective personality make these all the more effective though. Unlike most emcees, Proof didn't beliedidn't believe he was invincible, and knew the end would inevitably come one day. Unfortunately, it came far too soon for Proof, as he never got his big break as a solo artist during his life time. Proof's Searching For Jerry Garcia is a very ill album overflowing with skills and potential; it's only a shame that potential was never fully realized, and now, never will be. While not flawless, nor classic, Searching For Jerry Garcia is certainly an album worth adding to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-02-15

Proof's lp "Searching For Jerry Garcia" is a great release. He's got some really fresh stuff on here, and I'm actually glad that he released this on his own record label rather than on Shady Records. Since it was released on his own label, I didn't know what to expect, especially production wise. But, I don't think any of the beats fall short, and they all match Proof's rough and tough vocal tone. Proof had something pretty good to offer, I've also heard much of his underground stuff which is also very good as well. Best track is easily Kurt Kobain. It's a shame he passed on as early as he did, but he left us good music to remember him by.

3 out of 5 stars good album, stolen beat.......2006-09-05

i dig this cd, proof kept some quality in the mainstream hip hop scene, may he rest in peace. but my biggest problem with this album is the last song "kurt kobain." the beat is straight up stolen from an atmosphere song (the woman with the tatooed hands) produced by ant, that was released in 2002. sampling is one thing, but ripping beats that have already been done is not cool.

4 out of 5 stars I Miss The Hip Hop Shop.......2006-09-03

I just gotta say that out of D-12, Proof really was the illest MC. I have the UNDERGROUND EP, I have I MISS THE HIP HOP SHOP, and trust even back when he was killin it. For Proof fans or fans of Rap music, go out and cop it. Its a very good listen.

4 out of 5 stars RIP Proof........2006-08-10

great album. not a classic. but a great album from beginning to end. it only shows the potential he had. and what music he could have done with more promotion and production on a major deal. those things we will never know. but i do know that this is must have album in its own way. RIP PROOF

Five Iron Frenzy Rules!

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Five Iron? Perhaps.......2003-12-29

Five Iron Frenzy makes a solid compilation of some of their best songs with the release of this live album, which will delight die-hard fans of the Denver ska-core ensemble and curious listeners alike. One of the things that has always set Five Iron Frenzy apart from other groups in their genre has been their unique stage presence and sense of humor, (which encludes dressing as the cast of Star Trek and crowd surfing a giant pinata filled with chili across their crowd) and these qualities are shown in this album. However, apart from the outrageously entertaining gimmicks of their live preformances, Five Iron Frenzy also offers fine musicianship and songwriting which is played out with even more energy than their studio records. These aspects distinguish the band from their contemporaries and make for an exillarating live experience. In short, Five Iron is a dish best experienced live, but this album is the next best thing (and is sadly the only thing available after the band announced their breakup in late November of 2003.)

5 out of 5 stars HOLY COW!!!!!.......2003-03-19

FIF is THE BEST band in the world. Ska, ska, ska. I love it. And I love FIF. This is one of their best cds. These are their greatest hits of all time, up to the point they made it at least. So sad they are breaking up this year. *Sob Sob Sob* But anywho, very good. The music is yummy and skankalious. The tight sweet sounds and smooth vocals make it great. Plus not only the music, but the preformance is great. Goofy jokes and yelling "To Hell with the Devil" in a high voice. Or the funny, random songs like Revieve Him, Kingdom of the Dinosaures, or one song Jeff sings. And if you are patient, at the end of the "last song" their is a hidden track, about 7 from when track 18 starts. The hidden track contains their mess ups throughout their tour. A great cd, even if you don't like ska. I really recommend it. If you like it, I also suggest FIF2: Electric Boogaloo. Very good music, and the in-between things between the songs are great too. I give two thumbs way way up!!

5 out of 5 stars This CD ROCKS!.......2003-01-04

I'm not even the biggest punk/ska fan that there is, but I saw FIF in concert and thought, "Hey, they seem fun." I bought their cd, fell absolutely in love with in and now can not seem to take it out of my cd player. Every song is filled with fun lyrics and upbeat tunes. Another cool thing about this cd is that it's live and you sort of get to know the band members through the goofy things they say during the shows and stuff. All the songs are great! All the lyrics are wholesome and uplifting and fun! Buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars HANK WILLIAMS JR LIVING PROOF BOX SET.......2006-08-18

If you're only familiar with the big hits of the late 70's and 80's on the curb label, you would be missing out on some real good vibrant music where Hank really sings his heart out.I think anyone who likes classic rock & country from the early 70's would like alot of the songs on disc #3.This music may be decades old,but it still sounds fresh and lively. It reminds us older people of when music had a sense of purpose that seems lost in todays music.

5 out of 5 stars The early years were typical Nashville country.......2004-07-29

If you like Hank's music for the mix of country, blues and rock that became his trademark, you won't find it here. This collection is mainstream country, typical of the sixties and early seventies in which these tracks were recorded, although there are hints here and there of what would come later, especially in some of the song selections. The outlaw movement started by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Tompall Glaser was an inspiration to Hank and the music for which he is best known proves that. I love his eighties music and have reviewed most of his original albums from that period, but I also love mainstream country so I enjoy this set too.

The top twenty country hits featured here are Long gone lonesome blues (a cover of one of his father's songs), Standing in the shadows (about his father), It's all over but the crying, Cajun baby, A baby again, I'd rather be gone (written by Merle Haggard), I walked out on heaven,, Ain't that a shame (a Fats Domino cover), Raining in my heart, I've got a right to cry, Rainy night in Georgia, All for the love of sunshine (his first country number one), Eleven roses (his second country number one), After all they used to belong to me, Pride's not hard to swallow, The last love song, Hank (about his father), I'll think of something, Angels are hard to find and Stoned at the jukebox.

Hank was originally marketed as another Hank Williams (which he was born to be) and he has never been able to completely get away from his father's legacy as his later music shows. However, the connection is even more obvious on these early recordings, confirmed by the covers of his father's songs here. Your cheating heart is a piano solo that lasts thirty seconds. There are plenty of others, some famous, some obscure.

The outstanding cover is Satin sheets, a song made famous by Jeanne Pruett and covered by many top female country singers including Dolly, Tammy and Loretta. Hank does it as an answer song, protesting that he is busy working and can't give a woman his undivided attention. He sings with real passion, perhaps because he was having his own marital problems at the time.

There are plenty of other covers, including songs originally made famous by Jimmie Rodgers (Mule skinner blues), Merle Haggard (I threw away the rose), Johnny Cash (Understand your man), Jody Reynolds (Endless sleep), George Jones (Least of all you), Bobby Darin (Splish splash), Patti Page (Tennessee waltz), Lefty Frizzell (I love you a thousand ways), Webb Pierce (Slowly), Cowboy Copas (Alabam), Bob Dylan (I'll be your baby tonight) and the Temptations (My girl). Other covers include Slow rider (also known as I ride an old paint) and Nobody's child (originally recorded by Hank Snow but a top ten UK pop hit for Karen Young).

As well as all the covers, Hank showed that he had inherited his father's skills as a songwriter. Perhaps none of his own songs here quite measure up to his father's classics or his own songs from the late seventies and the eighties, but there are some good ones here. Highlights include I was with Red Foley the night he passed away, No one's sorrier than me and Getting over you as well as several of his big hits of the period.

By the end of his time with MGM, his music had already started to change in the direction that Hank wanted, particularly evident on the last nine tracks here taken from his final MGM album, And friends.

There is much to enjoy here if you like mainstream country of the sixties and seventies.

5 out of 5 stars Hope they re-release this!!.......2003-03-07

It may be out of print but this 3 Cd box set shows the side of Hank Jr before he fell off the mountain in 1975. It also includes the entire 9 song masterpiece "Hank Jr. and Friends" on the 3rd CD. This Box set is totaly autobiographal. You'll understand once you read the book inside the set. All his hits from the early days are here, covers of his dad's, and some previously unreleased stuff. Lots of great singing, and steel guitar. Real country music! I wish there was more material from "Sunday Morning" on here, but oh well. I wish they'd release all of Hank's older material, but for now this is the best you can get on compact disc. Unless it's put back in print, try buying it used. I got mine used. Good luck!
