amazing amazing amazing.......2004-02-20

This is one of those typical stories. As amazing record from a new band from a very small contry (in mind and size)wich is Portugal.
This record is an absolut blast. So powerfull with amazing string and orchestral arrangements. So beautifull with extraordinary melodies and landscapes. So different from the rest. I know that Madredeus management and label just did everything to put this band out of the big scene. They were sucessfull. Shame on them.
But that means that V Imperio (and not Imperio alone) was the big event (as the french tv channel ARTE just pointed them as the band le plus en vue).
What a pitty world...

I can't see why this portuguese group hasn't been more famous. Their music is just absolutely amazing... a unique sound! The lyrics and the instruments gets us to the pass, reminds us of how powerfull we were... the fifth empire! The CD starts with O Castelo, a powerfull music that anyone can't ignore and several other musics wich have the sea and the Saudade as the main muse. To all the New Age fans... Don't miss it!!!

Remarkable!!!!.......2001-04-29

There are no words to describe the feelings that this album brings to our soul. Full of powerfull music, the lead singer, Isis, reminds Madredeus Teresa Salgueiro. The music and the lyrics reminds us of the middle age, when portugal was, in fact, the fifth empire... Portuguese feelings are translated here to its maximum point, though it's not fado!!!

If you are a New Age, or a Portuguese music fan you can not miss this album!!!

Great Fado w/ a modernizing touch.......2001-04-22

This Portuguese band takes their country's fado tradition and updates it with modern instrumentation. Folk purists usually hate when bands to this, but even the most ardent traditionalist might still give find V. Imperio's "Mar de Folhas" palatable, as they use those modern instruments (synthesizers mainly, and a few drum machines) to make very traditional sounds. There's lots of string samples in this, which gives it something of an orchestral sound. The best thing about this band, though, are the gorgeous, expressive vocals by their singer Isis. Those who like traditional music with a modernizing touch-- or just beautiful female vocals ought to love this disk to death. Fans of Loreena McKennitt might really appreciate this...
