Love those "Part 1" songs!.......2005-10-01
Anyway, no one makes music like this anymore. No one. Ah, back then they used real orchestras for strings. And Teddy's just working it to death! My fave vocal of his is on "Bad Luck", social commentary with a beat! Great dance music, not disco, but dance music (yeah, there's a difference!).
Superb lyrics and music - lifeless sound.......2005-06-15
I have ordered many wonderful CD's from Amazon that sound great, but felt compelled to write and warn others.
I give this CD at 5-star rating for its lyrics and music, but only a 1-star for it's sound quality. With engineering like this, its no wonder so many would rather use free music-sharing services on the Internet rather than make a purchase.

Philip Glass deserves his Oscar® nod for this superb, richly atmospheric soundtrack. His work on, say, The Hours may have been found overly sappy and intrusive by many, but Notes on a Scandal is a masterful example of what a film score can achieve. Glass has explained that he wrote it from the point of view of the Judi Dench character, who becomes increasingly obsessive and unhinged as the film progresses; similarly, the early tracks are relatively calm, only to start building up and up and up, and the last third of the CD is a master class in how to suggest psychological tension. The composer's familiar hypnotic repetitions are used very sparingly, giving the technique even more impact when it hits (check out "Invitation" and "Betrayal" for textbook examples). A cue like "Barbara¹s House" easily sits next to Bernard Herrman's best work on Hitchcock classics--no small compliment. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description
Philip Glass is inarguably one of the most distinctive and influential composers of the modern era. In addition to his ground-breaking concert hall works and operas, his film scores, such as The Hours, Kundun, and The Thin Blue Line, have won acclaim and popularity through their combination of Western classical music, synthesized sounds, and non-Western influences. His emotive score for Notes on a Scandal is an integral part of the dramatic arc of the film. Notes on a Scandal is a story of loneliness, loyalty, envy and love. Directed by Richard Eyre, the film follows a free-spirited and charismatic art teacher Sheba Hart (played by Cate Blanchett), who is brought down by scandal when she is arrested for engaging in sexual relations with a 15-year-old student. Academy Award winner Judi Dench plays a fellow teacher, Barbara Covett who befriends the younger woman and observes her fall from grace. "The score essentially is about Barbara," Glass states. "It begins with Barbara and it ends with Barbara."Notes on a Scandal opens in theaters December 25th.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Sorrow, regret and revenge procreate in a dark lonely corner of your heart. It's that little piece of yourself that you try and hide from seeing the light of day. Southern California's Atreyu thrives on that darkness.Taking a new direction in the world of metal they fluidly balance sinister metal riffs with technical, finger tapping cadences. Their blend of soothing vocal harmonies lull you into a state of momentary bliss, until your dreams are abruptly shattered by a menacing growl so fierce it will make you want to impale your delicate face with any object within arm's reach. Atreyu represents the perfect hybrid of hardcore, emo and metal.

I can't describe how juvenile the lyrics are! Here's an example from the single "Lip Gloss and Black"(with irregular capalization to make it seem dumber): "IF I GAve YOu ENouGH PRetTY WOrdS... COulD YOu PAinT A PIctURe OF US THat WOrkS..." *whiney sung parts* *chorus* *lousy guitar solo* *return screaming* "I WIll KIss EVerY SCar, ANd WEep YOu ARe NOt ALonE... THen I'Ll SHow YOu THat PLacE IN MY CHesT WHerE MY HEarT STilL TRieS TO BEat... ARen'T YOu TIreD OF BEinG WEak?" *whiney sung parts* *chorus* *filler breakdown moment*
Now to the vocals. OH MY FU**ING GOD!!! Who though this Alex Varkatzas idiot was good?! I mean come on! He barks like a dog with Tourettes syndrome, screams like he's getting dunked in a toilet(by a childhood bully which inspired the band's lyrics) and sings like a whiney child! The vocals are probably the worst part of the band! I'm not in the mood to talk about the instrumental talent as it sucks too.
So all in all Atreyu are another band in a crappy and oversaturated genre. And thus says The Metal Master_92...
i enjoy it........2006-05-09
what this album also does is combine the heavyness of metal with punks energy and uplifiting chords, and a not too bad drummer (ive heard better, think "atomship"). not to mention the vocals...
i have nothing against screaming, but if a band doesnt have melodic vocals to add variety to the music, i hate it. it just gets boring (think will haven). atreyu stays exciting through the whole cd, i never get bored. its a great album. buy it.

Two of the Best Albums You Have Probably Never Heard.......2006-09-09
Animal notes, the first eight songs on this double package is worth the price of admission, but I am going to focus on the final seven songs, which make up almost all of the original Safety in Numbers. More on the "almost all" in just a moment.
Safety in Numbers is CTS's finest album, and one of the best albums most people have never heard. If there were any justice in the world, these guys and Porcupine tree would be two of the most popular bands of all time, but we all know musical justice is in short supply.
I first encountered Safety in Numbers in the late 70s. A cousin had it playing on his 8-track player. After a couple of listens I had to have the album. I bought it in Vinyl; the record was scratched, so I took it back for a refund, as it was the store's only copy. I could not find another copy of the record. Fortunately I had kept a back-up on tape (with the scratch) and it became one of my favorite albums. Finally, I was able to buy this double CD a few years ago. and I had to get it as an import for about $18 or $19. I was happy to pay it.
You can hear some Beatles influence in Safety in Numbers -- particularly in "Flashlight" in the mellow interlude in about the middle of the song. This little snippet is so luscious, it could have been expanded into its own song, and it would have been a great one.
The two best tracks on Safety in Numbers may be the first and last, "Nuclear Apathy" -- the partly mellow, part hard / Prog symphony of a song that begins the album -- and the title track, a very well-produced, all stops pulled out social commentary track that I just can't get tired of. In between these masterpieces, are several more songs, each varied and able to stand on its own. Probably the most different from the rest is "A night on the Town (with Snow White)", which I might call progressive doo-wop with amazing, ironic, even humorous lyrics. Don't let my label turn you off of that song. It is a gem, and worth coming back to again and again and sharing with friends.
My one complaint is that the people who put this together did not include a short little track called (I believe) "Prelude to Safety in Numbers" , a strange and short little preview of "safety in Numbers"; this odd little piece was originally at the end of side 1 of the vinyl release. Oh well.
This is a wonderful package and worth buying and keeping and going back to again and again.
Crack the Sky ..Classy Rock.......2006-06-06
4.5 stars - Crack The Sky's reign of excellence continues.......2005-07-02
Safety In Numbers (1977.) Crack The Sky's third album.
One of the most underrated classic rock groups of all time was Crack The Sky. In the seventies, progressive rock reached a pinnacle it had never reached before and would never again reach. Unfortunately, many of the bands of this era were overlooked in favor of more commercially-successful groups of a similar styling. Crack The Sky is one of these long-forgotten prog rock acts of the seventies. The band's musc has been all but forgotten, by all but a small group of music fans. In recent years, the band's material was released on CD, in the form of twofer albums! Read on for the twofer of Animal Notes and Safety In Numbers, the group's second and third albums from 1976 and 1977, respectively.
The first of the two albums featured on this release is the group's sophomore effort, 1976's Animal Notes. This is one of the band's most unfairly bashed and overlooked albums. Since the band's first album set the bar pretty high, many fans don't give the second album enough of a chance - and it's definitely a bit more of aquired taste than their first album. But anyone who gives it a chance should grow to agree that it's a great album. The opening track, We Want Mine, is a catchy rocker that fuses rock with a plethora of musical styles. It's definitely one of the band's best songs and one of the most widely-praised ones present. Next up comes Animal Skins, the most different-sounding song on the album. Here the band uses sitars and goes for a middle-eastern sound. The end result is actually quite good. It gets followed up by Wet Teenager, a straight-up rocker you'd have to be a fool not to like - even if you're not a fan of the band. The semi-ballad, Maybe I Can Fool Everybody (Tonight) comes next, and it proves to be another one of the more popular and excellent songs featured on the album. A seven-minute-plus tune, Rangers At Midnight, comes immediately thereafter. This is a piano-heavy pop rocker that beautifully epitomizes what the band stood for musically. It's definitely one of their best tunes. Next up we have the classic rocker, Virgin... No. This cool little rocker is the tale of a boy who misses the younger days in his life. Witkowski's guitar playing is top-notch as usual. In Invaders From Mars, the piano is the primary instrument. Paired up with the rest of the band's instrumentation, you've got one hell of a song on your hands. Closing things out of the band's sophomore release is Play On. Essentially, it's a melodic, Beatles-esque ballad with plenty of acoustic instrumentation. And there you have it. Animal Notes is a great album that deserves more credit than it gets.
And then we get to 1977's Safety In Numbers, the band's third album. This is where original frontman John Palumbo left the band (although he DID write plenty of the material present on the album.) Surprisingly, his departure does NOT hurt the overall quality of the band! Kicking off the third album is Nuclear Apathy, one of the greatest songs the band ever recorded. The first two minutes are slow and soft, but it explodes into a straight-up rocker right after that! As the eight-minute-plus track progresses, there are plenty of musical style changes, and this keeps things interesting all the while. We get more of the straight-up, seventies-style rock on the album with the second track, Flashlight. No Crack The Sky album would be complete without a melodic ballad, and we get one in the form of Long Nights. It's definitely one of the band's best songs of that styling. Following it is the short instrumental Prelude To Safety In Numbers (for some unknown reason, though, the twofer DOES NOT have this piece of music.) It's a very short instrumental, but in that one short minute, the band shows off their musical abilities beautifully. Lighten Up McGraw and Give Myself To You are more of the classic seventies-style rockers we know and love the band for. While the former is more of a straight-up rocker, the latter leans more toward the prog rock trend the band displayed many a time. One of my personal favorite songs on the album is the underrated gem A Night On The Town (With Snow White.) This is a melodic, poppy rocker that sticks in your head long after you're done listening to it. It should have been more popular. Closing out album number three is the title track. A lengthy acoustic and melodic masterpiece, this song makes for the perfect closing piece to the album. Once again the band served up a solid release - even without Palumbo at the helm.
It's great that the band has finally reissued their work on CD - and even better that they chose to do twofers, but there's a huge flaw with this - MANY OF THE TWOFERS ARE MISSING TRACKS. For instance, this issue is lacking the Prelude To Safety In Numbers instrumental from the Safety In Numbers album. Hopefully if the band's material is issued again someday, these flaws will be corrected.
Crack The Sky proved beautifully with their second and third albums that they were one of the most excellent rock and roll bands of the seventies. It's such a shame they got overlooked in favor of so many other bands of the day who didn't have half as much talent. If you're a fan of seventies rock, progressive rock, classic rock, or you're just the kind of music fan who likes to try listening to new things, Crack The Sky will be right up your alley. Take my advice and start with their self-titled debut, and then move onto these two albums. Their first album is the most accessible, by far. These two are almost as good, but harder to get into. Final verdict? These are highly recommended albums.

A few years after The Phantom of the Opera debuted in London, Harold Prince unveiled Andrew Lloyd Webber's gothic musical in Canada, in 1989. It was so good that this recording of highlights from the Canadian cast is--dare we say it?--more enjoyable than the equivalent London cast highlights album. No, it doesn't have the authenticity of London principals Sarah Brightman (for whom then-husband Lloyd Webber wrote the role of Christine) and Michael Crawford, but it doesn't have their idiosyncrasies, either, and it does have the richer voices of Colm Wilkinson and Rebecca Caine (who played Jean Valjean and older Cosette, respectively, in the 1985 London cast of Les Misérables). At 69 minutes, the Canadian album is also 10 minutes longer than the London, allowing inclusion of the prologue and dress rehearsal for Hannibal. Of course, Lloyd Webber's melodies--"Angel of Music," "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--are scrumptious on any continent. --David HoriuchiAlbum Description

Iffy.......2007-01-22
And Colm Wilkinson as the Phantom? Whose idea was that??? I really do not like his voice, even as Valjean in Les Miz. I highly doubt he's a strong enough singer to pull of "Music of the Night" the way Michael Crawford or Hugh Panaro (best Phantom EVER) can.
If, however, this was on iTunes, I'd jump at the chance to get Rebecca's songs!
Rebecca Caine is what made me buy this album........2006-12-04
As for everything else...
Honestly, Colm Wilkinson cannot sing. His voice is just too weak for the role. Like one of the reviewers before me said, he's no Michael Crawford, not even Gerard Butler. Maybe I should hear him sing in Les Miserables to appreciate his voice.
As for Byron Nease, he's okay, but I've easily heard better.
In all, the album's okay, but there are many better recordings.
Very Nice!!!!.......2006-08-25
Apart from that Rebecca Caine is a stunning Christine!!!! And at times seems to me to be...dare I say.... better than (my personal favourite singer) sarah brightman, Ms. Caine's "Think Of Me" blew me away, it was very inspiring....
Overall the rest of the cast is very good as well and if you are a true "phan" this is a must have CD very much worth its price!!!!
NOT AS GOOD AS THE LONDON CAST RECORDING.......2006-07-02
Phantom, with its operatic and lush melodies, intensive story and grandiose staging, remains one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time.
The musical is based on the Gaston Leroux's novel of the same title. It is set in the second part of the 19th century Paris and its famous opera house. The young soprano, Christine, is discovered as a talented young opera singer in the opera house. She is noticed by an old childhood friend, Raoul, and they fall in love. However, we find out that a third person, the mysterious Phantom, hiding behind a mask, is a musical genius who had been giving Christine singing lessons and who has developed a mad passion for his young pupil. He hides in the catacombs of the opera house, lurking on the outside world. He is determined to keep Christine for himself and the story evolves from here.
Apart from this interesting plot, the audiences were swept away by Lloyd Webber's tremendous score, which probably remains his best work. It combines the beautiful love songs and sweeping operetta-like arias, with numerous orchestral leads and crescendos. You can't help but being charmed by this beautiful and haunting score. The large numbers, especially, the last one, will probably move you deeply. The most popular numbers are "The phantom of the opera", a vibrating duet between Christine and the Phantom; "All I ask of you", a lovely love duet between Christine and Raul; Phantom's mesmerizing voice will hold you till the end in "The music of the night", Christine in "Wishing you are somehow here again" will evoke sadness, and many more.
One of the main reasons for the early success of this show and this recording was its original London cast. All of the three principals: Sarah Brightman as Christine, Michael Crawford as The Phantom and Steve Barton as Raoul gave the performances of their lives. Michael Crawford's take on the role of The Phantom became stuff legends are made of, due to his amazing vocalisation and the powerful, almost hypnotic attraction in his voice and performance, exactly how the Phantom is supposed to sound.
The lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and Christopher Hampton are the weakest link here, but they manage to convey the basic story.
After the show's success in London and on Broadway, the Canadian production was mounted and it premiered in Toronto's Pantages Theatre in September 1989. This CD captures the highlights of that production. All the important musical numbers are here, however, the problem is the cast, that is, some of them. Colm Wilkinson is a great singer, his interpretation of Jean Valjean being the best example. Unfortunately, he doesn't have what it takes to play the Phantom. His interpretation lacks the depth of Michael Crawford and he struggles to stretch his voice, especially on the high notes. Overall, he sings too deep for the role, sounding as if he is still in Les Miserables. Still, he is much better than the mediocre performance Gerard Butler gave in the 2004 movie version. Rebecca Caine is a fine Christine, her soprano has no problem of getting into the character. Byron Nease, who plays Raoul, also fails to deliver, sounding too old and squeaky. The unwritten rule of the musical theatre, that the miscasting can affect the best of materials, is regrettably evident here. There is also a minor problem with the orchestrations, since some parts have a faster tempo than in the original. The aficionados will notice small lyrical changes in comparison with the original cast recording.
The CD comes with a synopsis (a rear treat in the Andrew Lloyd Webber's cast recordings), the lyrics and production photos.
This recording works best as an addition to the existing Phantom collection. For the first time listeners, I highly recommend the 2-disc 1986 London Cast Recording. Not only does it feature almost the entire musical, but also the cast is much, much better, as well as the orchestrations, which have a more classical touch.
I liked Colm Wilkinson better in Les Miz.......2006-05-12
