Put the good S#$t out!.......2007-04-10
yeah re-mix sucks but it's still great zz. admit you were wrong and make it right!
NOT THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS!.......2007-04-01
I am a recording engineer and sound mixer. I grew up in Texas, listening to and watching ZZ Top. The first two ZZ Top albums were released on vinyl records. Tres Hombres was the first to be released on Compact Disc. When the inevitable popularity of the CD overtook the market, Bill Ham thought it would be a great idea to release the first six albums on CD, which they affectionately called the "six pack." While remastering this compilation, somebody (who knows, but who controlled all of ZZ Top's musical movements??) got the bright idea to re-edit, reproduce, re-arrange and remix the first three albums. At the time, there was a new device in the studios that was known as a "digital echo" device for adding reverb and delay textures to sounds. Most notably, Phil Collins was using this echo device to enhance his drum sounds. ZZ Top's producer (you know who) decided it was the way to go as well, that the new sounds would attract the day's "new audience." The echo and reverb patterns on the "six pack" were so much bigger and wetter than on the original first three albums. Then I started to notice that there were different vocal performances and different guitar riffs in a few places. Talk about re-arranging an original! At a later time, the reproduced versions released on the "six pack" were then released on individual CD's which contain the original artwork of the first three albums. However, they are definitely NOT the original recordings. This process is much like Jimi Hendrix's producer, who went into the studio after Hendrix died and actually hired a player to finish the guitar work on recordings that were incomplete when Hendrix died. Those recordings were subsequently released as "Hendrix's final unrealeased recordings." Suffice it to say, that if the world's art museums decided that certain Rembrandt or DaVinci paintings looked "faded" or weren't "up to date with today's audience," and they repainted certain brush strokes on these masterpieces, the world art community would have a cow! Don't buy these CD's, they are not ORIGINAL works. They have been repainted to fit what someone thought would be a new and "catchy" idea.
Rio Grande Mud evidences ZZ Top's progress.......2007-01-10
"Rio Grande Mud" offers the listener with a consistent and driving groove, catchy melodies, and searing guitar lines by Billy Gibbons. Frank Beard's riveting drum work and Dusty Hill's fluid bass patterns are sure to please the most discriminating of listeners. One can actually hear the muscial progress the guys made as they crept from "the back forty" into the mainstream of American blues and rock & roll. This CD should be bought as part of a set, to complement "ZZ Top's First Album," and "Tres Hombres."
Great album, despite sonically screwed-up CD.......2006-08-04
My advice to any of you who get nauseous (such as myself) from attempting to listen to the screwed-up sound quality of the CD of this awesome recording is, try to get your hands on the original LONDON vinyl (or all of their first 5 albums for that matter) at all cost, record it through a sound card, or similar professional digital recording equipment, burn it onto a CD-R and stick it in the jewel case of the original store-bought CD. You'll be glad you did. My burning question is why the hell alienate your long-time hard-core fans in favor of a bunch of 80's MTV teenyboppers (i.e. Eliminator, Afterburner albums etc.) who have no idea about the true value of great classic blues-based Rock'n'Roll. Those who grew up on this band, and know the original sound are the only ones who will appreciate what ZZ Top were all about in the 70's. Great Rock'n'Roll in any case! 5 stars for the music alone!
Awesome R&R.......2006-06-23
I've read some of the reviews about the quality of this remix. I have ZZ Top's Six Pack, and if this is the same remixing on 6 Pack, then I have no problem with it, but I haven't heard this particular release. I remember the year that this album came out. I was with a couple of friends and we went over to another guys house whose family was fairly affluent, so he had one of the better stereo systems I had ever heard at the time. His parents were out of town that weekend and he had Rio Grande Mud blasting on the stero, and I remember thinking it was the greatest thing I had ever experienced, not to mention the greatest music I'd ever heard. I immediately asked who it was and from then on, ZZ Top has been my favorite band since the early 70s. All ZZ albums are great, but this one really gives you a taste of their true raw talent as musicians. Mandatory for all classic rock fans.

In-Your-Face Razor Blade........2007-07-07
Smackingly hard rocking. Knew Al in Chicago, he was in Special Effects. He worked at a record store, I DJ'd at Northwestern. Every time we met, he was torqued, happy.
For starters, track one: "Rio Grande Blood." It's like the album -- high-electric. Right away, Ministry (Al) punches into NBC's three-tone marque of yesteryear with uncannily sweet chunk guitar phrasing. The record's an ecastatic sonic assault, fantastic for dancing.

I love Ministry!.......2007-06-23
This is kind of a seqaul to the previous Ministry album, and I like it just as much. Another stab at the conservative majority. Al Jourgensen blends hard hitting Industrial metal with political angst to a omnious effect. Strong and explicit lyrical content and fast, fast, music. Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedy's) also makes a small guest appearence on the song "A## Clown". My fovorite tracks on this album are "Lies, Lies, Lies,", and "Great Satan". Another adrenaline pumping metal classic by Ministry.

Killer!.......2007-06-21
Ministry is back again with a hardcore industrial metal anthem that burns a hole on the white house carpet. This is an excelent follow up album to the prior release (house of the mole), another Bush bashing anti-conservative album with intelligent lyrics, aggressive guitars, and one helluva great live show. If your pro-Bush, you'll hate this record...otherwise, do get a copy. It's well worth it's price in full.

Great Western Movie Music.......2007-01-13
I introduced my wife to western movies in general, and John Wayne movies in particular after we were married. We've got quite a few on DVD, and she's been asking for the soundtracks for several years. When I found this CD, I bought it and hoped that it would be a fairly decent reproduction. In a word, it's excellent! The CD contains all of the music that we would want from this movie, and the quality is superb. Although I've been buying DVDs of these movies, I wasn't aware that anyone would actually produce a soundtrack for something this old. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys this movie and music genre.
Classic music for great western films........2002-09-09
If you a fan of John Wayne and John Ford, this is a must CD.
Great music for the western classics. Rio Grande was part of the "trilogy westerns" that included Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.
Also, this was a film that had to be completed in order for John Ford to obtain backing for "The Quiet Man".
First film with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, who proved to be the greatest female star for Wayne.

Bidú Sayão's silvery, impeccably tuned voice was small in size, but rich in nuance, shading, and emotion. Her recording of the Villa-Lobos Bachiana Brasileira No. 5 is justly famous, unmatched for lightness and sensuality. Few have dashed off the Jewel Song from Faust with similar insouciance or imbued the last phrases of Manon's "Adieu , notre petite table" as touchingly as Sayão does here. Her French song interpretations glow with charm and style, and a previously unreleased snippet from Ravel's L'enfant et les sotilèges makes one regret she never recorded the entire role, Sony's transfers are more lifelike and three dimensional than previous issues. A delectable disc. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
mesmerising.......2007-05-10
I first heard her voice on a Met compilation and became intrigued enough to buy this CD.
I love her voice...its so simple, unfussy and pure and yet so very unique. you know its her from the first few notes on.
I love her Manon, probably more so than Sills or Fleming. Her voice reminds me of De Los Angeles, but is different.
I'm glad I was introduced to this great, stylish and classy singer.
great stuff.......2007-01-24
I don't consider myself much more than a novice when it comes to opera; but I'm a musician, and I'd like to think I know good music when I hear it.
This is good music!
I've only recently become aquainted with Bidu Sayao, but I have to say that all the accolades I've read from the "experts" are well deserved. There is a character that shines through these recordings. And the recordings themselves are warm and pleasant, considering they come from mono shellac sides from another era.
There's something really special about this "vintage" music that seemingly cannot be replicated in modern recordings; an ethereal quality that's hard to explain, clearly belonging to the age from which it came. We are greatly enriched by its preservation!
Brazilian's Soprano.......2005-08-26
Excellent, amazing, recommend.
(excelente para conhecermos melhor uma das mais importantes e conhecidas sopramos de todo o mundo)
The most charming voice you will ever hear!.......2004-07-19
Bidu Sayão is considered the best Brazilian soprano ever and certainly one of the most taltented singers of the 20th century. Do you want to know why? This disc contains some important selections of Sayão's wonderful artistry. It includes arias and songs from French repertoire, in which Sayão is even in our days considered the most perfect example of French singing and style, some lovely Brazilian folksongs and her legendary recording of the Cantilena of Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5. It's a very good selection for every listener, since it shows Sayão's perfect vocal technique and sincere and moving interpretation. We have a joyful "Je veux vivre" as well as a heartbreaking "Adieu, notre petite table". Ah, but the true show here is her Bachianas Brasileiras. I'm absolutely sure you will never hear a better interpretation of this song! Sayão could sing from the most lyric parts and the most wonderful pianissimi to the most incredible coloraturas with no difficulty. Actually, she had exactly what I would call "perfect vocal technique", since it never, I mean, never fails. Her voice was small, but so carefully trained that it amazes me more than many big voices I heard. It's always pure, sweet and charming.
Dont' miss this singer who was maybe the best lyric soprano of the first half of the 20th century. If you are interested in listening to good music sung by a legendary voice, you really need to buy it!
Perfection!.......2003-12-16
There is a tremendous sincerity and perfection present in this CD. The Villa Lobos has attained classic status and should be owned by serious collectors. I have not heard No. 5 surpassed yet. Rosa Ponselle wrote in her biography that Sayao's pianissimi were "unequalled in my experience", the finest she had ever heard. Mind you, Ponselle heard them all including that Spanish Diva that made a career of singing softly. However, in Sayao's voice they have meaning are used to emotional effect superbly. Otherwise, the voice is so finely tuned that this old mono recording often gives a studio effect.
Bravo Madame Sayao!

great music bad presentation.......2005-06-08
There is no doubt that the music in this so called boxed set is very good and for further info I humbly refer you to previous reviews. My disapointment comes in the destruction of the artist concept and display of the product. After reading the reviews I realized that most of you recall the album release, the albums came in a box format hence the title. But i do not know if the same people recall the original release of the cd which came in a clam shell box cleverly reproducing the album presentation. What is being past as a box is now a jewel case inside a flimsy slip cover the title should now be changed to Mike Oldfield jeweled cased.
A Must for Oldfield Fans.......2004-02-27
I have to say it... this is one of the best showcases of Mike's earlier work. This remixed version of "Tubular Bells" was created as a way to convince Mike that a quadraphonic mix should be created and released. Mike listened and proclaimed it perfect as was, so it was released. The original version, compared to this remix, sounded cluttered and confused. Also, the original American quad pressing, using the CD-4 system as opposed to the SQ format used in England, was marred by a very poor quality pressing. Contrary to what was said in the booklet accompanying this box set in CD, the recordings held on these discs are, in fact, SQ quad despite claims otherwise. I also have the LP set, and I directly compared them. So if you have a Dolby Pro Logic II setting on your playback system, by all means use it. The mix of "Ommadawn" is the same as was originally released on both SQ and QS quad versions in England, and on SQ here. The first part contains a chant, by Clodagh Simonds, that builds up toward the conclusion. Played back in surround, this chant takes on an etherial quality; Clodagh's voice suspended in mid-air as the additional instruments gradually come in. This is lost in the stereo mix, which I also have on another CD. "Hergest Ridge" features a musical tone poem, as it could be described, of where Mike was brought up. The shorter selections in the "Collaborations" album are also quite good. "In Dulci Jubilo", which is a Christmas song, takes on a highland fling style. As for "Speak", it's a duet with Mike and David Bedford on the vocals. This is a great box set, and I encourage any true Mike Oldfield fan to add it to their collection.
Gives a new light on early Oldfield's recordings.......2003-08-06
This is a must have for real Oldfield's fan..."Ommadawn", "Hergest ridge" and "Tubular bells" are his classic works, here they come along in slightly different versions and unreleased songs...The songs are really interesting especially delicate piano tune "Speak..." with vocals by Mike and beautifull "first excursion", that signals a beginning of "Incantations" era....
"Tubular bells" has a bit different sound from original and it features diffrrent ending - very funny "sailor's hornipipe" version with crazy commentary by Drunken Vivian Stanhall (master of ceremony in part 1) - a very nice suprise...
If you are a big fan of Early progressive and instrumental music,or just a Mike Oldfield fan this is a must have for you - it is also good for those fans that don't have internet to collect Mike's rare songs...
Mike and Me.......2003-04-05
Like most people, I suppose, first became aware of Mike Oldfield when THE EXORCIST first came out. Those haunting strains from TUBULAR BELLS really affected me when I saw the film lo these many yuears ago and again when I bought the album. I hyave owned that one in just about every format possible from Long Playing Record through Cassette tape to midi file and now on CD thanks to this beautiful set. A set which also features HERGEST RIDGE, OMMADAWN (another GREAT Mike Oldfield composition btw) and an album of collaborations. Unlike the LP version (which I have also owned of this boxed set) the cd boxed splits the collaborations on to the three cds that contain his first three albums. This seems to me a better way to hear them then all piled together on a separate cd the way they were with the record. They seem to complete the listening experience one has when one puts a Mike Oldfield work into one's cd player one soon notices that---whatever one is listening to: Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn...whatever---it's just not long enough. One wants the listening experience to continue..or, at least, one wants a few encores. And that's what you get here. What can I say, kids? BUY IT!!!
Superb.......2003-01-31
I was thrilled to see that this was available. I had to get my copy through a friend in England.
This CD set is an excellent collection of Oldfield's early work, and the re-mix on Tubular Bells (including the original Sailor's Hornpipe, as opposed to the toned down version used for the original American release) is hysterical (but a bit blind-siding if you're very familiar with the original -- first time I listened to it I almost pulled the needle off the LP so I could check the LP for problems).
Well worth the money, as among other things it includes Hergest Ridge, which is hard to find.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome album!.......2004-07-23
I have this album and all of Holly's albums and have been a big fan since 1992. This was her last album on MTM records. There was only 2 hits which were "Thats What Your Love Does To Me" and "(Its Always Gonna Be)Someday". Her song "Just Across The Rio Grande" was never released as a single but it shouldve been as stated below. I think there should have been at least one more song released as a single. I really enjoy "Thats What Your Love Does To Me" and "City Limit" are my two favorite songs on there. Its a really great album.
A magical album.......2004-02-19
The title track alone is worth searching out this album for. This very sad song about a Mexican family living near the USA-Mexico border first appeared on Reba's album, The last one to know, but neither version was released as a single. Being a huge fan of both Holly and Reba, I'm not going to say that either version is better than the other. Reba recorded it in a very traditional country style while Holly's version is more contemporary. That said, this album has much to offer traditional country fans, with steel guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin and fiddle among the instruments, plus backing vocals by Vince Gill, Sharon White and Cheryl White. The presence of electric guitars and drums should not put off any but the most die-hard traditionalists.
The songs are a well-balanced mix of up-tempo and ballads, including a great banjo-driven cover of Billy Joel's Travelling prayer. You may have thought Dolly was the first to give this song the bluegrass treatment - well, Holly was ten years ahead of Dolly on this one. And Dolly may well have known about Holly's version because she put in a guest appearance on Holly's next album, Blue rose of Texas.
Other great tracks include That's what your love does to me (also recorded by the Forester sisters) and It's always gonna be someday (the only cut here to be included in Holly's Milestones greatest hits compilation). But this is a truly magical album with every song a classic.
If you enjoy traditional country updated for the eighties, this is well worth looking for.

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.
