A terrible disappointment.......2002-12-17

As someone with a dozen or so of Paul Van Nevel's discs I had high hopes of this one, but this was a terrible disappointment. Firstly this is something akin to a "crossover" disc with the Huelgas ensemble performing their choral inbetween pieces sung by modern Fado singers. The result, rather than being a crossfertilization, sounds more like a church choir and flamenco singers unhappily taking it in turns. The excellent Huelgas choir don't even sound as comfortable in their pieces as on their earlier (better) recording of Portugeuse motets and cancoes for Sony. Add to this that this is a very "live" recording - beginning with noisy clapping, coughing, feet stamping, plus an acoustic balance which sounds thoroughly odd, and you really have a disc that fails on every front. The only good thing I can say about it is that this is the only disc I have found to actually provide texts and translations for Fado, which world music discs don't seem to provide, although (infuriatingly) Sony have decided to glue the booklet to the CD pack, which makes it a real pain to use, and requires delicate handling or it won't be long before the spine on the booklet begins to come unstuck. In other words an all round disaster.

Trovantes: Portuguese troubadours.......2004-03-20

I learned of The Trovantes ("the troubadours") working as a volunteer in Mozambique in the mid-eighties. A Portuguese friend played me (and sang with) "125 azul", "Perdidament", and others. I loved it - even if it took me some time before my portuguese was good enought to actually follow the lyrics myself.

I lost the Trovantes after that, until passing Lisbon airport a couple of years ago and seeing this new live recording. Just what I needed. And the magic is still there. And the connection with the live audience is similar to what a Simon and Garfunkel or Bruce S. would have over here...

Portuguese rock - infused with the Portuguese national spirit - fado, melancholy, poetry, life, death, love and romance, religion and... Anyway - buy it!

Trovante revisited.......2003-07-03

Being now a 42 year old person I accompanied most of the career of Trovante during the late 70's and 80's as a fan. I was excepcionally thrilled after this (almost) ten years after record, in wich the band has invited some both of the new and all-time-generation musicians like David Fonseca, Manuela Azevedo and Sérgio Godinho.
Outstanding, in a word

Clasicos de las Americas has Good Gottschalk.......2004-02-23

This six CD set has the Central and South American greats, but I prefer the North American who did some of his best composition South of the border. Louis-Moreau Gottschalk had the life of a modern day Rock Star. He is joined in this set by such prominent players as Heitor Villa-Lobos, George Gershwin, Augustin Barrios, and Carlos Guastavino. George Rabol is a favorite pianist.
