Bloody Brilliant.......2007-05-12
You won't be able to listen to this in the car with the kids (too profane) and the one joke repitition wears a bit. Having said that, a must buy that is laugh out loud funny. It calls to mind the Bill Murray "Nick Lava" lounge singer bit, only better since this guy can actually sing. Would make a great gift, although I'm not sure for what holiday.
OH Jeez, the Cheese is Hilarious!.......2007-04-18
My sister introduced me to Richard Cheese and I think I busted something laughing at the music/lyric combo. This stuff is HILARIOUS.
That said, my baby daughter also digs this music. Sadly I am going to need to ditch this CD before she learns to talk or we are going to be in some deep S#@&T.
Crude laughs.......2007-01-23
Give this a two for the number of times you'll think it's funny. Maybe a three over all the years you'll own it. It's crude and not real clever. Stinky Cheese! I knew better, somebody slap me!
Sweet Jesus!!.......2006-11-22
Sweet Jesus Mary Mother of God!!! This is the best album I have bought in a long time! I bought it along with Aperitif for Destruction, and ever since I put the disc in my CD player, I haven't stopped smiling. I would recommend it to those who like uplifting tunes, who always see the glass as half full and honestly believe that every cloud really does have a silver a lining. Honestly, they do! It is such a fun album. I am now a Richard Cheese addict and am spreading the cheese as far as it will be tolerated! Every song is pure genius. Happy listening. xx
lounge music versions of popular songs.......2006-09-21
If you haven't heard this type of music, it's funny. Quite humorious to hear old rap songs turned into lounge music. But gets old quick. Good for an easy joke at social settings.

Opening with the creaky sounds of a ship at sea, Sailing charts the funk-punk waters the San Francisco Bay area band returns to again and again. It's all here: the acerbic humor, Les Claypool's gurgling fretless bass lines, Larry LaLonde's seasick metal guitar, and Tim Alexander's Bill Bruford-inspired syncopation. The narrator of "Sgt. Baker" aims to "rape your personality," while the reapers of the "American Life" live out their dreams "residing in a cardboard box." Tom Waits makes a cameo on the funky back-alley tale "Tommy the Cat," and the protagonist of "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" has "too many cold beers one night" and "wraps himself around a telephone pole." Primus concert fave "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers" helps round out this bizarre prog-punk masterpiece. --James Rotondi
Customer Reviews:
YOU PEOPLE CAN'T RECOGNIZE GENIUS!!!!.......2006-10-03
I don't know why people have knocked this band and this album!? Les Claypool and Tim Alexander are two of the most gifted and innovative musicians EVER. You people think Neil Peart is the s**t, try listening to Tim Alexander's PERFECT drumming......WAKE UP AND SMELL THE CHEESE!
Yeah, yeah, they're talented. We all know that........2006-09-20
When I first heard Primus, I was shocked by the originality of it. I'm very interested in punk and 80's hardcore, and I was shocked by how chaotic these guys were without having to play at breakneck speed. Yet, beneath all of the chaos lies great talent and in some cases great meaning to the songs.
People tend to view Primus as a talented comedy band, which is fine, but there's more to them than that. Primus gets beneath the skin of the average American redneck, and exploits them (like I feel they should be). Many people tend to ignore the political messages of the songs.
Then again, there are some songs that are clearly jokes (Tommy the Cat), and some songs that are clearly serious (Eleven). The variety of the lyrics are very refreshing.
Now, the music is just amazing. I love bands who experiment, and although Les Cleypool is clearly an amazing bass player, what makes Primus really click for me is Larry LaLonde's guitar playing. He can produce great ambient sounds. Not everyone will notice it, but if it was taken away from the music, Primus wouldn't be nearly the same.
Basically, if you want something refreshing, buy this album.
jerry the racecar driver ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-03
this album is one of primus' greatest achievements, i love tthe way that primus arranges their music with great guitar playing, outstanding drumming from tim alexander, and the twangy, hard hitting bass playing and offpitch humorous vocals by les claypool.
Great Album.......2006-05-08
Primus' followup to the greatest sophomore release ever, Frizzle Fry, expands upon the slap bass technique and becomes a little more mainstream as well. This was the first Primus album I listened to, and the radio hit "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" was what really turned me on to this CD. But listening to it all the way through, I came to realize Primus was much more than just a one hit wonder. Signature Primus tracks adorn this album, including the stomping melody of "Sgt. Baker," the best bass track on the album "Is It Luck?," the fan favorite "Tommy the Cat," and the live favorite "Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers." Other tracks are "Eleven," "Here Come the [...]," "American Life," and "Fish On (Fisherman Chronicles, Chapter II)." This 1991 release rivaled other great release of the same year including grunge's greatest achievement "Nevermind," Pearl Jam's "Ten," Metallica's "Metallica (Black Album)," and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Blood Sugar Sex Magik." All in all, this is a great album, and it is certainly worth a purchase.
10/10
A good but repetitous effort?? I think not!.......2006-03-19
The guy who gave a 3/5 for this album and said that it's a "repetitous effort" doesn't know what he is talking about. First of all, "Here come the bastards" is not in 3/4, but is in 5/4. Second, "Mr. Knowitall" is not even on this album.
I agree that at times Les might only have a couple of bass riffs for one particular song, but that's because in Primus, he is playing the role of a rhythm guitarist.
"Sailing the Seas of Cheese" is a great album, and belive me, if you are a musician, you will appreciate it a lot more than if you are not. Clearly, this guy is not a musician.
He only talked about the negatives of this album and how it is all repetitous and what not. He never talked about the positives of this album so I will do it in this review. Les Claypool recorded 3 bass solos on this album. 1) The fast slap/pop bit during "Tommy the Cat", 2) Fingerstyle bass solo during "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers", 3) Fingerstyle 6er fretless solo at a fast tempo on "Fish On". Last time I checked, this is the only band that has recorded that many bass solos on a single album. But that's not the main reason that this album is original. I don't think that any other drummer, other than Tim "Herb" Alexander could lock in with Les Claypool's complex bass riffs. Just listen to the way Les and Tim lock in together on the chorus of "Jerry was a racecar driver" with Tim's syncopated drum beats and Les' six string fretless tapping riffs, and you will know what I am talking about.

Those of us who worship at the Church of Ween (Hail to the great god Boognish!) know that skinny blond twerp Beck stole his whole shtick from New Jersey musical geniuses Dean and Gene. Always ahead of their time, the brothers Ween have responded by abandoning their traditional lo-fi four-track recording methods and giving us their lushest album yet, Chocolate and Cheese. Not that Ween's fourth effort is polished; that adjective could never describe an album that veers wildly from acoustic Mexican folk songs, to pure '70s disco, to the appropriately named single, "I Can't Put My Finger On It." But Chocolate and Cheese may come even closer than "Push Th' Little Daisies" to fulfilling Dean's goal of establishing Ween as the next Counting Crows. --Jim DeRogatis

Awesome.......2007-01-05
This is the first Ween album I hve ever bought, and I am very impressed. Mix Zappa-esque song titles with sometimes silly, very weird inspiration and college kid songwriting and you have a very funny, well done, interesting and strangely nostalgic sound. This is what happens when your high school garage band sticks to their roots and does well.
Excellent.......2007-01-05

Glorious. Horrible. Demented. Beautiful. This was the moment when WEEN hit on all cylinders...and exploded. What more can be said? This is one of the best records ever, no kidding. I love everything they've ever recorded, but this is the best.
The first Ween album I picked Up..........2006-06-20
Ween is the type of band that is a non-stop experimental band, it goes to show in this classic album, "Chocolate and Cheese". It was the very first Ween album I'd ever listen to, and Its one of those albums that you have to listen to a few times before you like it. At first I thought they we deminted (the first song I listened to was Spinal Menegitus), but after a while I came around and started to like their creative style, Needless to say, this is a must have...
Smile on mighty Jesus.......2006-05-09
One sunny Saturday afternoon while idly washing my hands at the bathroom sink I found myself singing the chorus to Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down), not just humming it but actually singing the words, and I knew right there that this record had worked its voodoo on me. I Can't Put My Finger On It--me, I hear Beefy--and A Tear For Eddie immediately stood out but really there isn't a bum note here--definitely one of Gener and Deaner's Beatles albums and a sonic wonder to listen to. The Mollusk is pretty near untouchable in my book but this dang disk is bulletproof after its own fashion. By the way, Modicum Mandy down there in his hive sure sounds a lot like Hyacinth Bucket, doesn't he? Stick with Phish my friend, that way you'll never have to taste the waste. As for the biddy further down banging on about the album cover, blow me if it isn't Andrea Dworkin come back to lecture us all from beyond the grave! Sigh. Just so you know, I gave this record 5 stars but someone at Amazon must've peed in the electrics because I can't seem to change it.

Musical Comedy.......2006-02-13
I had a lot of fun with this CD, especially inflicting it on unsuspecting house guests. I'm very much into funny music, so I do have to make one comment: this one's not so much about the music as it is about the musical comedian. The music quality isn't the best I've heard but Richard Cheese is very funny. The last track is definitely the best because of him. Also not for listening when the kids are within earshot.
Brilliant.......2006-01-14
Bill Murray changed the words. Richard Cheese does not. And it's awesome. If you buy one, buy 'em all.
wow, this music gets old fast.......2005-12-01
Bill Murray did the lounge-singer spoofing on rock songs better thirty years ago, on Saturday Night Live. Me First and the Gimme Gimmies are doing it better now, but they're using punk to blast the sides off of pop-songs. Wait, I think STEVE ALLEN did the incongruity thing best, in the fifties/sixties, when he recited the lyrics to early rock songs, showing how the songs wouldn't hold up to being read out loud. So a lounge singer's versions of hip-hop/pompous power rock/crappy pop songs?: after the umpteenth version, it just isn't novel enough to be funny anymore. All that said, I laughed during Cheese's version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" when the dude screeched "Ay chihuahua...." Now that's funny. (Side-note: Amazon's "related products" links to this are all to actual cheese vendors. That is the highlight of my whole Cheese/cheese search today. Gott segne Wisconsin.)

On Lounge Against the Machine, alt-rock hits get the Vegas treatment way before their time. Vocalist Richard Cheese and his piano trio really know how to warp a song. Rage Against the Machine's "Guerilla Radio" sounds smooth as silk, if incredibly schmaltzy, in the hands of this wayward lounge act. The Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia" gets completely defanged in Cheese's rendition. And it's definitely strange to hear the rage drained out of Nirvana's "Rape Me" and replaced with bland, mindless enthusiasm. The tone of these covers is so far removed from the originals that at times you forget what you're really listening to. At moments like these, Cheese and the boys sound like some anonymous combo going through the motions. But then you'll hear the singer let loose with some foul language or croon a harsh line and it sounds downright strange and funny. Lounge Against the Machine can be tiresome at times, but it certainly takes the piss out of these songs. --Fred Cisterna
Customer Reviews:
Cheesy.......2006-08-24
Thats the point though, Its supposed to be a cover of the original in lounge style. This one has some of my favorites done in that laid back way. You could play this at cocktail parties and no one would notice that its lyrics to hard core rock. Enjoy
Very funny.......2006-07-06
Comical twist on songs that you know well. There is some strong language and four letter words that occured in the original form, you can just understand it more clearly in this version.
Stick it up your yeah!.......2005-10-22
This CD features lounge music versions of "alternative standards". It is performed by a singer accompanied by a jazz trio (piano, bass and drums). The singer is suitably cheesy and sleazy, and the jazz trio is actually quite talented. The humor comes from hearing the radically different arrangements of these songs, plus the oddness of hearing a lounge singer sing the (mostly) dirty lyrics of these songs. Funny stuff!
RICHARD CHEESE SAYS: "DON'T BUY THIS CD".......2005-08-26
I saw Dick's show last night at the El Rey and he was unbelievable! He stated that he's in the middle of a lawsuit with the record label of this cd and we should not buy this one. He's putting out a cd this January with new recordings of all these songs, so he said last night. So BUY THE OTHER THREE!!! TUXICITY is the best! Get down with the sickness everybody!
A "Must Have" for any Real Cheese Collector!.......2005-08-16
This is Richard Cheese's first CD, and was produced by a different label than his subsequent three CD's. In it, Richard and the band cover songs from the Dead Kennedy's and Fat Boy Slim to Nirvana and Offspring; all in their unique, "swankified" Las Vegas lounge act style. As always, they keep the scores musically complex, the lyrics true to the original song, and Richard imbues the vocals with just the right touch of faux seriousness to keep you laughing through multiple listening sessions of the CD.
A co-worker turned me on to Richard Cheese's latest release "Aperitif for Destruction" about a month ago. Since then, his CD's have been passed around our office with the popularity of beer flavored cheese curds at a Wisconsin dairy festival.
Although "Lounge Against the Machine" wouldn't be my top recommendation for a Richard Cheese newbie (start with "Aperitif for Destruction" and work your way back), it is definitely a must have for any true Cheese-fan's collection. So... My recommendation is to get it while it is still available.

It's Funk, its Bluegrass, it's Latin, It's Folk, It's Afro.. It's String Cheese.......2005-09-14
Most eclectic lineup of songs I've heard in a while. They really prove their range of musical influences on this album. It's as if every member of the band liked a different style of music and each got to create their own track.
Best mix of music on the planet is placed inside this cd!!!.......2002-05-08
WOW!!! That's all that can be said for the best CD on the planet. Let me explain: 'Round The Wheel blasts into the groovin' scene with "Come As You Are". This track pushes funk latin beats to the limit as the band floods you with an awesome jam. Then comes the Bluegrass, which can only be described as "Finger-Slapping". But, don't worry...SCI delivers their aroma of funk with "Galactic" and "Got What He Wanted". A pure latin rush comes in from "MLT", as the drums slam their way through this fast paced song. My personal favorite is "'Round The Wheel", because it starts with the relaxed 6 feel. Suddenly charges into a quick 4 feel with incredible feel and power. SCI leaves off with their trademark Bluegrass feel in "Good Times Around the Bend", which lets you relax for a second after being hit with the best music your ears have ever heard. This is the best CD in my whole collection. Buy it now!
Excellent album Best of SCI.......2001-11-28
I can say it is the best studio album thus far, i got this album in 2001, being introduced to the SCI in 2000. All the tracks on this album are different yet appetizing to the ear and get the body grooving in a funky sort of way. Nershi decides to play a folkish role in some tracks and they merge into a unique blend of both jazzy bluegrass and electric progressions. After seeing the SCI the energy produced live is amazing, but this album is a "laid-back" energetic rush of flavor for both the ears and the feet.
Get this Album!.......2001-11-24
Of all the SCI albums I have, including live shows, this is my all time fav. I can't imagine not loving every second of this album. I can't sit still while listening to it, it makes you have to, have to, just got to shake it. Dude, even my 50ish, republican parents love this album. You gotst to get it my friends!
Best album of 1998..........2001-07-27
In a world of processed cheese, thank God for String Cheese! They're the best band anywhere these days, and this is their best album. I just wanted to pose a question to "Music Fan from Middle Earth". Since you were posting a review of the String Cheese Incident's album "Round the Wheel", and you referred to the band as a "weak cover band", can you tell me what songs on the album are cover songs? Your criticism would carry a little more credibility if you could tell us all just which songs from "Round the Wheel" were previously done by other artists, which is the definition of "cover". Well? We're waiting...

Awesome.......2006-01-17
I don't have much to say about this CD. This is an awesome live SCI cd. This is the second SCI cd that i own but it is by far the best, after listening to this cd i then proceeded to order Live at the Filmore. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for a awesome jam band.
SCI!!!.......2006-01-14
I've seen posts on here about how they don't understand on how or why people can listen to SCI...
One you thing you need to relize is that SCI is a jam band. In a way a jazz band or bluegrass. If you don't like that type of music than why are you listening to this?
Its called "Hippie" music for a reason...
would be 100 stars .......2005-06-20
i love this cd every song is AWESOME, with lonesome fiddle blues, little hands>dudleys kitchen, and and wake up being the best ones the other songs are super good 2 even if this cd only had the other songs it would still be my favorite cd ever
GET THIS CD!
Umm...Where are Your Ears?.......2004-10-18
I truly don't understand the phenomenon that accompanies the rise of a band like SCI. Its akin to a collective delusion, wherein "phans" replace the true cannon of improvised music with something diluted to the point of opacity, and then hail it as the second coming.
Some other reviewer here wrote that the Allmans Live is a benchmark 5. If that is the case (and I agree), then the "Inicident" is a negative 5, but Amazon won't allow that.
If you want talented current guitar players (who you'll be able to see in your city) dig Derek Trucks, Eric Krasno (Soulive), John Scofield, Jimmy Herring, Tony McAlpine (in CAB)...or take the next step and listen to JAZZ which is where all this music comes from, and learn what speaking through your instrument is all about. You'll never be able to listen to "jam" garbage except by the very best after you've heard Wes Montgomery, Sonny Rollins, or Cannonball Adderly...or Headhunters, or Elegant Gypsy for that matter.
There's a certain skill that is missing in all of these pseudo-bands, and that is the ability to develop a coherent idea muscially over changes with phrasing that EXTENDS BEYOND the bars and incorporates rhythmic invention as much as harmonic...none of these jokers pull this off, as they obsess over "which pedal will make me sound like Trey," and whether or not the $500 Hemp Tone Tubbies can really make up for sucking.
SCI is a parody of a really bad jam band. Sadly that had become all the artistic currency they need to pander their wholly derivative sound to the Trustifarians who follow them around.
I never used to laugh at those "smoke enough grass and anything sounds good" jokes, but apparently this is one instance where the joke is on, and it's selling a ton of CDs.
An album anyone will enjoy.......2004-06-14
I've never been a fan of the "Jam Rock" genre, but I happened upon this album and I absolutely love every single song on it! It is the ultimate feel-good album, and if you can't enjoy it, you need to see a psychologist.

LA Face with Oakland Booty!.......2007-07-13
I can't believe there's only one other review for this album. Richard Cheese is the sickness! I've only heard two of his albums (the other one has covers of NIN's Closer and Nirvana's Rape Me), but this one's my favorite simply for the first 8 tracks. Hilarious. His covers of Baby Got Back, Down with the Sickness, Shake Yo A**, and Fell in Love with a Girl (bad scatting at its best) make me giggle madly. And I love his smooth, smarmy voice.
If you like to get a little silly with your music sometimes, if Weird Al Yankovic has ever made you smile, or you thought Gunther's Ding Ding Dong song was funny, you'll get this. Sooo much fun!
Only the best.......2006-12-31
Another Richard Cheese diamond mine! I can actually say I jam out to this in my car. This is the best album out of all of them.

To bad because they were an excellent band........2007-06-29
The String Cheese Incident started to loose fans after their 4th studio album "Untying the Knot",but they totally lost their fan base with release of this album and that led to the band breaking up. It's to bad because they were one of the best bluegrass oriented "Jam Bands" around. If you want to listen to SCI buy any of the first 3 studio albums (the best being "Round the Wheel" and then "Born on the Wrong Planet") or any live release.
Awful Waste of Money.......2006-08-21
Save your money on this one. It's SOOOOOOO bland- with no jams!
What a disappointment. Can I get a refund?
Like a fine wine..........2006-06-08
At first I could see why some of the others gave this album low marks. It's a bit different from what you might expect from a SCI album - it stays fairly mellow and grounded (although "Swampy Water" rips along with a heavier sound) and has a steady mood throughout (with a couple exceptions, like "Rainbow Serpent"). But like a fine wine, it has gotten better with time and I have grown to love its smooth, relaxed overall sound. It is now one of my favorite albums. I appreciate that the album represents the bands democratic workings in that every member contributed - wrote and did lead vocals - on at least two songs. Their vocals have a noticable improvement on this album. The album should not be compared to their "live" style because I believe it's comparing "apples and oranges." However, I look forward to their upcoming tour because many of these songs will transition into excellent live versions. The album is refreshing and is best enjoyed laying outside on a warm spring day. The title track, is my favorite at the moment.
natural progression through cheese.......2006-02-25
This is an album that features Keith on vocals more so than in the past, which is awesome because he is a great vocalist in addition to being on bass. Just because Les C. is the most different bassist ever doesn't mean Keith can't Rockit on the bass Cheesy style (hint hint....new cover song to play). The Cheese does the Chameleon and they gotta do the Rockit!!!. Of course we all know Mike, Travis, Kyle, and Bill are great vocalists / players as always. I'm still listening to the Hann because I am a piano player and mostly focus in on Kyle's notes. I'm sure if him and Travis did some Hart & Kreutzmann style drum duos, that would also certainly Rockit!
The Cheese has certainly progressed/evolved throughout the ages and this album is something I could definitely see the Cheese rounding the wheel to. It's very chill and I simply like it.
Cheese!
Basic and Boring.......2006-02-03
I rather like the studio efforts that SCI has put out, however this record just bores me. The songwriting is very simplistic and I find it very hard to listen to the album all the way through. There are a couple of times that the songs seem to be about to go somewhere, but they just end. I'm not talking about ten minute jams, but just some sort of memorable hook or melody.
This album will turn a number of songs into live anthems, maybe, but then again, most Cheese songs translate live much better than on record. I gave this two stars for a Cheese record, though nothing on here is actually bad, just unassuming. If you are new to SCI, you should probably start somewhere else. If you are an old fan, then save your money for a concert.
