Released partly to celebrate International Women's Day, a holiday recognized by the United Nations, these eleven unplugged tunes from as many female singers make wonderfully varied and pleasurable listening. And the performers' backgrounds are equally fascinating. Some are comparatively well-known; Sandrine Kiberlain is a French movie star while The Wailin' Jennys, from Canada, have appeared on Prairie Home Companion. Meanwhile, Emiliana Torrini, of Icelandic-Italian parentage, made her mark with "Gollum's Song" from the second Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Others found their voices through travel--Luca Mundaca was born in Chile, irresistibly drawn to Brazil, and now lives in the USA. Marta Topferova has achieved such an effortless command of South American traditions that hardly anyone ever guesses that she is originally from the Czech Republic. As each lady in turn assumes center stage, she bewitches all comers with her own brand of adroitness, confidence and charm. Although the music is, for the most part, richly redolent of folkloric sources, many of the artists display a neo-cabaret sophistication that somehow never lapses into world-weariness. A final note: a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to the Global Fund For Women, a good cause if ever there was one. --Christina RodenMore from Putumayo

Album Description
Each March women all over the world celebrate International Women's Day. A national holiday in many countries, this day celebrates everyday women as makers of history. Though often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, this day allows women everywhere to look back on a tradition of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. Women of the World: Acoustic celebrates this tradition with an exploration of acoustic music by some of the world's leading female artists. Some of the women featured on Women of the World: Acoustic include the following. Sandrine Kiberlain is known first and foremost as an actress, having appeared in over 20 French films. "M'envoyer des Fleurs" is from her first and only album. The Canadian trio The Wailin' Jennys harmonizes together beautifully on "One Voice," a song from the group's debut album 40 Days.
The half-Icelandic, half-Italian Emiliana Torinni is perhaps most recognizable as the voice behind the enchanting "Gollum's Song" from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. She has also toured with Thievery Corporation. "Sunnyroad" is taken from her second.
Marta Topferova was born in the Czech Republic, but found her voice in the folk traditions of Latin America after discovering the Chilean protest group Inti-Illimani. Colombia native Marta Gomez contributes the haunting "Paula Ausente," a song based on the book "Paula" by noted Chilean author Isabelle Allende.
Rounding out the album is Luca Mundaca. Originally from Chile, she now resides in the U.S. Mundaca fuses her contemporary folk sensibilities with bossa nova and contributes "Não se Apavore."
A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to the Global Fund for Women in support of their efforts to promote and defend the human rights of women and girls around the world.

Ah, Brazil!.......2007-04-11
I absolutely loved this CD.......2007-03-02
I'm already a fan of World music, but Putumayo always seems to find the performers and sounds that make for great crossover music. I expecially liked the Wailin' Jenny's take on One Voice, and Sandrine Kiberlain's M'envoyer des Fleurs.
All the performances were somehow calming and energizing at the same time. Most I would put in the jazz genre.
I love this CD.

Four Fair Maidens Awaken The Celtic Muse.......2006-02-01
It's simply the best compilation of Celtic music I've yet to come across. Definitely one of the essentials.
really beautiful.......2005-08-15
an amazingly beautiful album.......2005-03-15
First there is Mary McLaughlin who sings "Bring The Peace", "You Saw His Eyes", and "Sealwoman/Yundah". Born in North Ireland, Mary moved to London at the age of 18 where her music career began to flourish. The album begins with "Sealwoman/Yundah", a spellbinding, almost erotically charged song inspired by the Celtic legand of the selkies (sea-like creatures able to take human form). In it the "Sealwoman" (selkie) is torn between her home (the sea) and human love. Next up is "Bring The Peace" a lovely song about gaining wisdom after a period of seperation, and for coming "full circle." Rounding off the three songs Mary contributes is "You Saw His Eyes" whose message resonates any pop song that's out there today: to love someone only to be brokenhearted.
next up is Connie Dover, born in Arkansas and raised in Missouri. She sings "The Wishing Well", "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir", "Siuil a Ruin" and "Cantus". Praising the birth and final sacrifice of Christ as well as the devotion of Mary, his Mother, "Cantus" is exceptionally emotional. "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir" (at haycutting time) is a stark contrast to "Cantus". More lively and upbeat, this traditonal song finishes with a dance tune written by Phil Cunningham who has had a long and fruitful working relationship with Connie. The mood changes drasticlly once again for "The Wishing Well", inspired by a poem written by Padraig Prease. This poignant song is about the sometimes overpowerful feelings of love and the fear of "losing yourself" in the process. "Siuil a Ruin" (go, love) is the heartbreaking tale of a woman's love for a solider who has fled to France in times of war.
After Connie's beautiful voice, there is the equally stunning voice of Maireid Sullivan, who was born in Ireland and at age 11 moved with her family to San Francisco, and later moved to Melbourne, Australia. She sings "Colour Me", and the more traditional "She Moved Through The Fair" and "Waly Waly". "Colour Me", co-written by Maireid and guitarist Steve Wilson, paints a lovely picture of a river on a sunny day. "She Moved Through The Fair" has been a favorite among celtic artists (Lorenna Mckennitt also sings a rendition of it, among others)and "Waly Waly", another traditional favorite is sometimes refered to "The Water Is Wide"
Closing out the album is harpist and Isle Of Man native Emma Christian who contributes the songs "Ushag Veg Ruy" (Little Red Bird), "Oikan Ayns Bethlehem" (Birth In Bethlehem),"O Kirree, Tou Goll Dy Faagail Mee" (O Kirree Thou Wilt Leave Me), and (very fittingly) "Arrane Oie Vie" (The Goodnight Song). Sung in her native language, Manx Gaelic, Emma creates a serene, intimate atmosphere for her audience. Keeping close to her roots, all four songs are rich with the Manx tradition.
The Title for this cd (Celtic Voices:Women Of Song) is so perfect because I feel the human voice is one of the most complex and beautiful instruments. This cd clearly demostrates that in the stunning, impressive talents of these four women. This is a wonderful album for immense lovers of Celtic music (such as myself) and also for those who are new to Celtic music. I highly recommend it.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Women have always been at the center of sub-Saharan music, as they were the keepers of the hearth, intimately involved in the life-sustaining mysteries of agriculture, food preparation, birth, and death. However, Africa, like the rest the world, is in the throes of social change. Female roles are evolving and the artists heard here represent a confident, worldly sensibility. The roster encompasses Dorothy Masuka's comfortable, gospel-flavored South African jazz, Maria de Barrios' sensual Cape Verdean morna, and a liltingly tonal ballad from Paris-based Algerian refugee Souad Massi. But a major reason to purchase this album is the track by Khadja Nin of Burundi; her deep-toned, knowing, unpolished voice transforms a Stevie Wonder tune into an ecstatic anthem of empowerment. Despite the occasional overuse of easy-fix electric keyboards, each singer emerges as a force to be reckoned with as, one by one, their voices salute the earth and soar into the heavens. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

An Accessibly Exotic Treat.......2006-06-07
I'm describing the effect of the music more than the music itself, because that is a visceral experience which you must take part in yourself. But I've already done the weeding; I sample and screen music all the time in search of recordings such as this one, and it involves suffering through a lot of turkeys, believe me. But I've done the work for you, so you don't have to.
But for the record, I will mention that Dorothy Masuka's selection here sounds like the kind of smooth jazz vocal piece one might hear from a Nat Cole or Natalie Cole or Diana Krall ensemble. That's one example only; this collection features a whole potpourri of tuneful sounds and they're all delightful (hard as that might be to believe).
makes me smile.......2005-10-26
My first Putumayo CD--a winner!.......2005-07-13
I have only had it a few days now, but I have played it about a dozen times, often singing the chorus of "Le Tsephile Mang" to myself throught the day, the perfect opening track. Another highlight is Dorothy Masuka's jazzy "Mfan' Omncane," but all the songs recordings are excellent.
Representing a huge continent, the musical styles vary quite a bit, but I can't imagine someone who is already interested not enjoying the majority of selections. This CD is great whether you're cruising in a car, on a boat, or just chilling in your house or apartment. These women are groovy!
I am already looking forward to my next Putumayo album, but I still have many more times ti listen to this one!

Latin America has produced dozens of brilliant female singers and composers, including trail-blazers like Violetta Parra, Elis Regina, Soledad Bravo and Mecedes Sosa, to mention only a few. The present generation is also shaping up nicely. There are more women bandleaders than ever before, firmly in charge of their own talent, free to choose their material and back-up players without interference. As they so often do, Putumayo has supplied a short-list of emerging stars; the voices heard on this album are uniformly splendid and worthy of deeper exploration. But there are a few stand-outs: Brazilian Mônica Salmaso's creamy dark voice makes a strong impression, as does Chilean chanteuse Jacqueline Fuentes's plaintive, fado-like mezzo and Lhasa's limpidly nostalgic Mexican ranchera. Some may cavil at yet another gender-based compilation. But they should consider that male-dominated equivalents have existed since the dawn of the recorded era; they were just not labeled as such. --Christina RodenAlbum Description

Chosen from a dozen recent recordings by contemporary Native American women artists, the music of Weaving the Strands is a banquet of spirited sustenance, reflecting the various passages, celebrations, and phases of feminine life. There are call and response and group chants, songs of meditation, worship, and joyous revelry as interpreted by women from tribes including Chippewa, Mestizo, Cherokee, and Muscogee. New listeners of Native American music may well be surprised by the marriage of anticipated flute, drum, and chant, and chant with plugged-in jazz guitar and country fiddle. Liner notes wisely provide information on the artists and the original recordings from whence their contributions come. Among the most well known in the group, Navajo songmaker Sharon Burch renders two of the most moving compositions, the reflective "I Walk Alone" and "Sacred Wind," featuring an extraordinary fiddle line twining round her expressively centered vocal. --Paige La GroneAlbum Description

Constantly on my top 10 list.......2006-07-21
The music is fairly far reaching in its scope with the possible exception of all the vocalists being female. From some traditional songs with only a drum accompanyment to contemporary poetry atop music, this CD has burned itself into my own mind with its lyrical and intriguing music.
I'm not all about native American music. Still, this CD makes me want to hear more. Simply stated, it is excellent.
Fantastic!.......2004-03-19
Wonderfully ecletic collection........2003-01-30
The CD contains some excellent tracks and is a very good starting point from which albums of the artists featured here can then be purchased, for example Sharon Burch, Walela and Joanne Shenandoah.
However the album works well as a collection in its own right with a suitably varied colection of cntemporary North American women artists.
A CD that will bring joy to the ear from the sheer beauty of the music.
Nice for more poppy fans.......2002-11-14

Yet another jewel in the Putumayo crown, Women of Spirit brings us an hour of soulfully respondent music from round the globe, made by women whose sound is full like lips, round like hips, and solid like bare feet on fertile earth. Women of Spirit is musky, sensuous, and womanly, at once wise and gloriously ripe. From the opening "Inexile," performed by Capercaille with Siberia, in which Karen Matheson's throaty alto wail soars round reeling Celtic fiddle, to the closing "A Song," featuring the mother-daughter African-American gospel blues harmony of Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon, Women of Spirit celebrates the stages not only of womanhood, but of the entire life cycle. Ani DiFranco's distinctively styled ringing guitar picking twined with her bust-loose vocals on the chorus of "Done Wrong" is deeply affecting. Cassandra Wilson shines on "Death Letter," and the exotic chant and slide of the French-Sudanese Groupe Oiywan makes staying still near impossible. This collection beckons one to embrace life, move to the rhythm, and find comfort in knowing that we are most powerful as a tribe. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Insanely Beautiful.......2005-10-03
With soulful works originating from anywhere from Greece to South Africa, Women of Spirit compiles some of the best female vocalists to ever grace the planet. Including Ani DiFranco's "Done Wrong," Capercaillie's "Inexile," Ima Galguen's "La Zarza," and Savina Yannatuo's "El Sueno de la Hija del Rey" as some of the shining stars, as well as songs from Susana Baca and Tarika, both previously covered by Putumayo.
Ranging from a crystalline, delicate Celtic/Mediterranean sound to harsh, tender, and sprawling melodies from the USA, this record truly has spirit guaranteed to outshine nearly everything else.
As Maya Angelou, whose quote introduces the album, says, "Being a woman is hard work. Not without joy and even ecstasy, but still relentless, unending work." Here is a record to remove our minds from these burdens, a collection of music that is peaceful, sexy, uplifting, or just insanely beautiful by turns.

Fauré: Requiem (1893 Version) [Hybrid SACD]

Customer Reviews:
As it's intended to be.......2006-10-27
Thus the 1893 version is the most complete and sincere overall. It has all the movements Faure composed, and is orchestrated only in the way Faure intended to. My opinion is that a piece loses its sincerity when it is orchestrated for a different medium. Take Rossini's 'Petite Messe Solennelle' for instance: Even though it's skillfully orchestrated for full orchestra by the composer, the version for the small ensemble stands always closer to me.
About this recording, I simply find it magical. The choir performs wonderfully, every group sounds very clear and moving. Listen to the part where the choir sings the theme of the baritone in the end of 'Libera me'. Without any exaggeration they bring a moving freshness to the piece. In every part of Requiem the choir is just great, they never destroy the sacred feeling of this piece. Listen to the tenors in the beginning of 'Agnus Dei' for instance. And the soprano solo in 'Pie Jesu'? Such a gentle interpretation, such peaceful and magical singing. To be compared with the recording of C.M. Giulini, in Giulini's recording K. Battle completely ruins the atmosphere thus the whole meaning of 'Pie Jesu' by using too much vibrato, thus the peacefulness, the purity of 'Pie Jesus' is completely destroyed.
The other soloist Peter Kooy (baritone) performs so wonderfully in 'Libera me' that you get a weird tension, take the harmonic progression starting with 'Quando coeli movendi sunt' for instance. There is no roughness in his singing; every phrase flows naturally.
The orchestra is wonderful too. Horns sound very nice. Even the solo violin in 'In Paradisum' is nice in spite of a few intonations. Mr. Herreweghe accomplished a great success in this performance. Everything is well thought of. Requiem is a great peace with contrasting ideas, great orchestration. Listen for instance to the part beginning with 'Te decet hymnus' in 'Introit et Kyrie', after tenors sing "... et lux perpetua' and with the entrance of horns & trumpets there is a small tension. Right after this the female voices enter; these contrasting ideas are great. Herreweghe senses this and never lets any phrase to be exaggerated; this in fact is how this piece is intended to be, and this recording comes very close.
This recording is highly recommended.
The best performanceI know.......2004-07-29
