A 19th Century Marvel!.......2001-12-02

Wow! Amazon.com has this cd available! I am a member at the Greenfield Village outdoor museum in Dearborn, Michigan, where many original 18th and 19th century homes (including the homes of Daniel Webster and Stephen Foster among others) have been relocated. Therefore, in being a member, I quite often frequent the Eagle Tavern, which was a stage coach stop originally built in Clinton, Michigan in the 1830's. Henry Ford restored the old building and had it moved to Greenfield Village in 1929. Re-enactors are there, dressed in period clothing, having their patrons feel as if they had stepped back in time to the mid 19th century. The food, traditional meals of the period, is phenomenal. One of the things, though, that makes the Eagle Tavern a truly special place is the musical entertainment at Christmas time. Opera Lite, as they are known, have been the main musical entertainment on many of the Yuletide Evenings there, and they do the traditional holiday music suited for such a historic building. All the familiar tunes that you know and love are on this disc: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, The Holly and The Ivy, The Wassail Song, and more. But, there are the not so familiar songs that are every bit as wonderful that make this disc worthwhile: Fum Fum Fum, Good Christian Men Rejoice, and Son of Art. To me, there is not a better 100% traditionally done vocal album of Christmas Carols than this. Opera Lite, which consists of eight vocalists singing accapella on all but a couple of songs, has truly captured the 19th century feel that, I'm sure, they had hoped to obtain. I would put this cd right up there with the best of the 'old style' Christmas cd's that are available, such as Robin Petrie, The Christmas Revels, Linda Russell, and On This Day Earth Shall Ring. I'm a bit of a connoisseur of pre-20th century Christmas Music, and I feel that I can safely recommend to anyone else searching for holiday tunes from the 'days of old' this wonderfully refreshing cd.
I surely hope that Opera Lite plans a second cd of Christmas Music, or even a collection of traditional 19th century "pop" music.
