The dictum "art transcends politics" is aurally illustrated on this recording, which chronicles a seven-day get-together in Havana with American, English, and Cuban musicians in 1999. It boasts a broad range of artists--from blues rockers Bonnie Raitt and smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz, to their lesser-known Cuban counterparts like Yadira Lopez, Carlos Alfonso, and Rey Guerra. On "Vacilon," Gladys Knight and Edesio Alejandro merge African-American soul and the Afro-Cuban bolero. 1970s icon Peter Frampton and Alberto Tosca turn in a midtempo percussion and guitar-driven ditty, "Hey, Hey," while drummer Mick Fleetwood, Todd Smallwood, and Augusto Enriquez get down on the anthemic "One World." The sexy syncopations of "Just Want to Be Alone With You," featuring Joan Osborne and keyboardist Jose Maria Vitier, melds the honk tonk with the danzon, making the 90 miles and political realities that separate our nations seem much closer. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

This Cd is smooth as silk, with some awesome tracks. I first listened to it while at a friends home. I had to have a copy of my own. It was a pleasant surprise to listen to artist (Montel Jordan) whom I would never associate with smooth jazz. A pleasant treat, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest "latino" hip hop albums. .......2007-01-04

If you are a true fan of hip hop without the gangsterism or bad boy acts with some latin soul then you should listen to this album. It's got funky beats, mellow grooves, english/spanish tracks. There's something for everyone on this album. I got the tape in 89 and haven't heard it in years but I remember all the tracks on it and it's still one of my favorite albums that most people slept on, probably because it was overshadowed by it's mega hit single Mentirosa. I can't wait to hear it on CD.

4 out of 5 stars SPANGLISH THAT WON'T EMBARRASS.......2004-09-29

Want to find a CD that is full of fresh raps, cool beats, a wide range of samples, and is in Spanglish that you won't be embarrassed to blast out of your speakers (unlike Gerardo - Ricoooooo... Sappyyyyyy)? Then hunt down a copy of Mellow Man Ace's first album that contains the monster hit "Mentirosa" (which contains a sample from Santana's "No One To Depend On" [Santana III/1971] and not "Evil Ways" [Santana/1969] as everyone assumes).

I bought this CD after reading the history of its making and have not regreted it once. This is one of the most fantastic collaborations I've ever heard. Unfortunately, the shop where I bought it did not have the enhanced version, so that is what I plan to buy next. We need more cultural exchanges like this one and we need to remove trade barriers against Cuba.

    5 out of 5 stars I WAS THERE.......2004-09-27

yes, I was one of the lucky ones who partcipated in this amazing project, "Bridges To Havana". Although it went by the name, " Music Bridges" at the time.. I am delighted to see the release of this music not only because I was a part of it al but because I never really thought it would ever come out.. It was caught up in politics and litigation for years. Everyone should know that Todd Smallwood had so much to do with this record. I am sure he is not getting the credit he deserves. Look for his solo CD which is being released on 9/25/04 on Sanctuary.Records. He worked on it with Mick Fleetwood. Getting back to Cuba. I was an assistant engineer working in one of the recording studios we shipped down and set up at the Hotel Nacional in Havana. it was an experience I will never forget. seven days of non stop chaos, excitement and creativity. There were some side highlights that happened while we were there that might interest you. Ry Cooder was in Havana for the Premier of his movie, "The Buena Vista Social Club" and some of us were lucky enough to here them play live in a small church in Havana. Also, The Baltimore Oriols came down and played the Cuban Nationals and again some of us got to go see that spectacle as well.. It was the first time since 1947 that the Americans played the Cubans in baseball. It was a big deal. That night we played the 23 of the songs that were written, in concert, after which, we were rounded up and surprised to find out we were being taken at 1am to meet Castro. We formed a single line and two hours later I was face to face with him and let me tell you that was one of the most interesting three minutes of my life. I could go on and on but the thing you should know is that Cuban singers and musicians perform from such a passionate place. There is no money in Cuba. I believe at that time the average monthly salary was $7. yes Seven dollars a month. When you take the monetary gain away from Art it becomes soley about passion. That passion affected all of us who were there and you can feel it in these tracks.

    5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2004-07-27

Star power clout, politically compelling and spectacular music, BRIDGE TO HAVANA is poised to be a global sensation. With such stars as Dave Koz, Gladys Knight, Montell Jordan, Brenda Russell, Burt Bacharach, Buena Vista Social Club's Omara Portuondo, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Buffett, Mick Fleetwood, Lisa Loeb, Peter Frampton, Joan Osborne, Paddy Maloney, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland, and many others joined with Pablo Milanes, Chucho Valdes and other legendary Cuban musicians combined writing skills and performances to create a whole new genre of music. The fusion of jazz, pop, Latin, rock and R&B yields multi-format material, which will be available on both CD and DVD in July. The creative and technically expert film ensemble of Haskell Wexler and others captured the highly charged emotional synergy of this event. This compelling footage combined with full digital multi-track recordings, both in studio and on stage, will give an international audience a glimpse into this extraordinary event. Multi Grammy-winner, Ed Cherney (Bonnie Raitt, The Rolling Stones) supervised the recording on 20 bit 32 track digital. This event, created to bridge cultures and political beliefs and foster good will, resulted in a musical event of the highest magnitude.

Canadian soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett was grooving in Havana long before American listeners got hip to Buena Vista Social Club. With husband and trumpeter Larry Cramer and longtime cohorts pianist Hilario Duran, vocalist-percussionist Ernesto "El Gato" Gatell, and legendary conguero Pancho Quinto, Ritmo and Soul follows in the folkloric footsteps of 1998's Chamalongo. Here the crew is augmented by several new additions. Singer Dean Bowman adds his towering Paul Robeson-like pipes to the santeria spiritual "The River/El Rio." Lucumi, a teenage Cuban percussion prodigy, and Najacko Backo, an African kalimba master, join for "Three Voices One Spirit" with Bowman and Quinto. Bunnett's snaky sax lines and feathery flute work ring on "Drume Negrita" and on the splendid original compositions "Hebioso," "Fransilo's Dream," "Santos Suarez," and the Cubano rap "Joyful Noise." --Eugene Holley Jr.

The real stars on this are "Pancho Quinto" and Ernesto "El Gato" Gatell, I can do without Jane and Larrys "noodeling" horns.

Want great CD's? Go for Pancho Quintos first CD as a leader " En El Solar La Cueva Del Humo " then there's him with grupo 'Yoruba Andabo' also on the CD "El Callejón De Los Rumberos" AND on the tour de force "Rapsodia Rumbera".

The "noodeling" horns on this make me wince.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous piece of work!.......2001-05-23

As my good friend "shimondi" has stated, "Jane Bunnett is no Kenny G"! Damn straight she isn't!

I wasn't sure what to expect when he recommended this CD to me. I was NOT disappointed at all! What great sounds come from this gathering of musicians. I was pleasantly surprised at the range and dynamics of the music. Being a novice jazz fan, I was moved by the sheer genius of the way the songs were put together using what seems at first to be just dissonant musical tracks blended together to make "something". WRONG! They know EXACTLY what they are doing. A beautiful mixture of Latin beat and Jazz funk with a touch of booty movement makes for a wonderful listening experience.

I had the volume jacked all the way up and still couldn't get enough. Well worth every centavos and absolutely damn near close to perfection as you could get.

      Just buy it already! :-)

      5 out of 5 stars A Musical Treasure.......2001-02-28

Jane Bunnett is no Kenny G. She's MUCH more dynamic, adventurous, interesting and entertaining. But the styles really aren't comparable. I only say that because they both play soprano saxophone.

Jane has produced here, with Larry Cramer, an astonishingly colorful, multi-textured gem - a paradigm for the blending of Cuban folklore, jazz, gospel and other styles. And the blending is done in such a way that, when listening the first few times, the changes come unexpectedly, yet they really WORK! And the more you really LISTEN to this CD, the more you'll love it.

In "Joyful Noise", the intro of the musicians greeting each other, followed by a Cuban verse, gives no hint of the "Cu-bop" to follow; sizzling solos on flute (Jane), muted trumpet (Larry), piano (the outstanding Hilario Duran) and bass (Roberto Occhipinti) - this one is guaranteed to get you moving. In "Drume Negrita", Jane invokes a tropical island feeling on soprano sax before Ernesto Gatell complements it with a plaintive Spanish verse.

Comparing "Ritmo+Soul" with "Spirits of Havana", I would say this one is somewhat more accessible if you prefer Latin instrumentals to folkloric music. But the various styles on this CD are represented so well and with such fine balance, it may be surprising how many people with different tastes in music could grow to love this album.

Considering the recording quality, the inside notes on the music and the artists, this one comes as close to perfection as you can get.

      4 out of 5 stars Jane Bunnet - Cuban rhythms + Soul + Jazz = Great music!.......2000-07-14

I have been following Jane Bunnet's career for some time and have always admired her adventurous spirit. She ventures in and out of musical genres effortlessly and never fails to surprise and amaze.

Consider her latest effort. There are Cuban rhythms, the music of Santeria, Jazz licks, Soul music and even a gospel (religious) feel to some of the tracks. Sounds odd in theory, but it all works beautifully in practice. I am particularly fond of Santos Suarez, Joyful Noise and Drume Negrita (a Cuban classic.)

In my opinion, this is Jane's best effort to date. She seems to have found the perfect combination of musicians and material to showcase her flute playing and her eclectic band.

A word of caution. Jane Bunnet is a musical chameleon who is constantly on the move. Do not try to figure her out or pin her down, just travel along with Jane and enjoy the journey.

Check out Jane Bunnet and The Spirits of Havana - Rhythmo + Soul and you will see (and hear) what I mean. Simply put, no matter what the genre, Jane rocks. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars SO FAR.....BEST OF THE YEAR.......2000-05-27

This disc is beautiful from start to finish!Jane Bunnett's soprano sax and flute are melodic and fiery.Combines the best of cuban sound ,(check out the Bata drums of (Pancho Quinto) or piano master Hilario Duran..The voice of Dean bowman adds another ,almost gospel feel. Anyway, the tunes are fresh, something special ...PICK IT UP>

"Havana Candy" was Patti Austin's second solo album and was produced by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen. Stylistically, it's very similar to its predecessor and Patti's passionate and emotive vocals are truly magical and spellbinding on gorgeous ballads like "I Just Want To Know", "Little Baby" and "That's Enough For Me". While not commercially successful, "Havana Candy" is a Patti Austin classic which anyone who loves good music should not miss out on.

        5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a sound!.......2001-07-24

I Love this Music! It has it's own sound yet infuses different aspects of Latin, Funk, and Soul. Great Vocals! Very powerful and soulful feeling voice! It hit me where it hurts! The guitar tracks are very reminiscent of early Santana! They move well within the music without taking away from the percussion and overall sound! Speaking of percussion... Man, if you don't want to move from listening to the rhythm of the drums and congas on this album, then get off the dance floor and make room for those who do! I highly recommend this album! Great tracks: Con Quien...Very Hot!, Strange Clouds...Very "Old School" and "Little Annie"..it's a little different from the rest of the album but serves up Some great Latin Blues! Who are these guys and why aren't they on the Radio More! Songo, if their next album is anything like "Havana Soul" they are sure to be a household name

5 out of 5 stars Songo's first CD is great!.......2000-09-20
