Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02

I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.

My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.

I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15

The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.

4 out of 5 stars Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13

Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!

5 out of 5 stars Better Every Time.......2007-05-09

This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07

I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

5 out of 5 stars He started dancing as soon as we put it on!.......2007-01-09

My 12 month old loves this CD and happily bops away to the music (in the car he sometimes even starts singing!). We like it too and not being very well versed in Classical music, it is a nice mix for us.

5 out of 5 stars Better than baby einstein.......2006-02-26

This is a great CD, with great music, at a great price. Everyone seems to love Baby Einstein, but I don't like the plinking music on those CD's, I like real orchestral pieces to stimulate my child. This is exactly what parents need, at a good price!

5 out of 5 stars great music at a great price.......2006-02-02

I got this cd to use as background when putting my 18 month old to sleep and for car rides. So far it has not made it out of the car. The cd is wonderful. The first song is the Luftansa airline comercial song (that is what my husband calls it) and is beautiful. I didn't think my husband would enjoy the cd at all but he doesn't mind one bit listening to it, he actually will put it on himself when we get in the car. My daughter loves it and will often start nodding her head back and forth to songs. I actually listen to it even when my daughter is not in the car. The music is soft and relaxing but not boring. It is also one of the only cd's that my in laws don't mind listening to when they are in the car with us.

I only paid like $4 here on amazon for it and I gladdly would of paid more for such a great cd. Its a great cd for such a great price!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD for all ages.......2002-11-03

My whole family has enjoyed this CD. It is very upbeat and easy to listen to. I think there is something for everyone on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for........2005-10-15

This CD is decent but does NOT sweep you off your feet into a soaring concert hall with your heart beating loudly and your breaths coming in faster. Why? I think its the quality of the recording and the caliber of the musicians maybe? But hey, $4.98 does not buy much more than a fast food meal- so no harm done! Happy Listening!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2004-11-26

I couldn't believe the wonderful, pure sounds that came from this low-priced CD. I absolutely love it and highly recommend it!!

4 out of 5 stars If only the Amazon discography was as good..........2004-02-14

The majority of the musical selections is undeniably fine. If only the track listing (s) were accurate or agreed with each other and the actual selections as they are ordered on the CD!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Vivaldi CDs on the market.......2003-01-24

I don't know how SPJ Music Inc., based in the world-famous town of Hauppaage, NY, manages to do it, but they have released at least 24 of these "25 XXXX Favorites" CDs, and all those that I have heard are superb collections. OK, many of the performances on this album are by ensembles that few will have heard of in North America, such as the Wurttemburg Chamber Orchestra, Musica di San Marco, and I Musici di Zagreb, and maybe they are a bit old (no recording dates are given), so SPJ probably doesn't have to pay much in the way of royalties. But this collection of works by Vivaldi is truly second to none.

Wait till you hear track 6, "Et in terra Pax from 'Gloria', by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, for instance, or track 14, from Stabat Mater Dolorosa, sung by Margarethe Bence with the Alto Pro Music Orchestra of Stuttgart. We are transported into the heights of the etherial world of sacred music, right up into the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, yet with that unmistakable touch of Vivaldi, who could be both consumately sacred and masterfully secular as he wished -- or even both at the same time. As has been proven again and again in the 20th century, Vivaldi was one of the greatest composers in history, and every classical music lover should have this CD in his or her collection.

I have a lot of Vivaldi recordings by period music ensembles like the virtuosic Il Giardino Armonico (who recorded the two best DVDs of Vivaldi works in existence, one with Cecilia Bartoli) and the somewhat more conservative Europa Gallante, led by Fabio Biondi. Then there are CDs by individual masters like Andrea Marcon (with the Venice Baroque Orchestra) and the immortal Nigel Kennedy (with the English Chamber Orchestra). Older classics re-released on CD include recordings by the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Orchestra of the 18th Century, and the Romero family (Los Romeros). And the list goes on and on. All are superb recordings that have given me hours of pleasure.

But this "bargain" CD rates right up there with the best of them, and I highly recommend it both for those who are just beginning to discover the wonders of Vivaldi's music and for "hardened" veterans. If it had been issued as a full price CD it might have had trouble getting known in such a crowded and competitive field, but it would have deserved every bit as much praise as I have given it here. As a collection of superb performances of many of Vivaldi's greatest masterpieces by a wide variety of different ensembles, it even has something to commend it over recordings by a single artist or a single ensemble. Buy it and enjoy!

Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. The singer's last few albums have showcased his love for the former (including homages to his beloved Verdi: the Requiem and Verdi aria collection). But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies that initially won Bocelli acclaim.

The familiar cast of songwriter-collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time to Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il Diavolo e l'Angelo." It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss, Bocelli sings with a newfound, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'Incontro," a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'Abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni," with its quotes from that composer's operas, Bocelli makes another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin

Album Description

Exclusive UK version of Bocelli's third pop release includes the exclusive bonus track 'Tornera La Neve' and CD-ROM. The album also features 'L'Incontro' a duet with Gerard Depardieu. David Foster co-composes some of the tracks on this album as well. 2001.

Just what it says. See my other Andrea Bocelli reviews to get the idea I really like this guy.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional therapy!.......2007-05-14

"He is all heart; there's no pretense. You can feel it." No kidding. These were my mom's last comments about Bocelli two months before she left earthly existence.

This album helped me process a lot of emotional residue affiliated with the strain of difficult dynamics between my mom and myself.

Don't get me wrong. The music isn't sad; it's pure heart and emotion, so it may evoke emotions. The last cut, "L'Ultimo Re" is gorgeous with the way his voice soars!

I bought the album before listening to any of the songs, because i'm a Bocelli fan. I was not disappointed. Wonderful melodies, beautiful voice. My personal favourites are Melodramma, Chiara and Resta Qui, but this is a great cd overall.

5 out of 5 stars Cieli di Toscana.......2006-08-25

There is no other voice quite like Andrea's voice. I keep listening to this CD over and over as some of the songs just touch my heart, both with his voice and the written arrangements. One of my very favorites from Andrea. He has the same qualities to his voice with popular songs as he does with opera. When following the English translations in the CD case, the message of each song becomes very clear through the inflections and tonal quality of his voice.

3 out of 5 stars They played it safe........2007-07-10

If you like gothic/symphonic metal like I do, you're probably wondering if Lacuna Coil's Karmacode is an album worth checking out. Out of all the albums Lacuna Coil has released, Karmacode is my least favorite. The combination of guitar lines, keyboard work, and contrasting dual female/male vocals help create their melodic sound. The thing I like best about Lacuna Coil is that they always seem to create music that goes perfectly with Scabbia's voice. However, in this album they keep the same beat and rhythmic patterns time after time which makes the album really boring. It would seem they have abandoned their old music style to satisfy the likings of a more mainstream audience even though they are pretty well known. I'm not very happy with this album due to this sort of "selling out". I wouldn't recommend this album to new fans of this band. If they liked the newer stuff more, it's not a good thing because they will be missing out on timeless classics from the band.

Even though most of the songs were very repetitious I really liked "To The Edge." "Life is so short/Close to the edge of another backdoor/Life is so sure/Life will be ready to twist up your world" makes me think about how life has its twists and turns opening new doors for us. If you want to check out Lacuna Coil's best work, listen to Comalies.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia!.......2007-07-04

Italians have always been known for their gift to romance the senses. Lacuna Coil is no exception. In fact, they are the 'masters of passion' - hypnotizing you with their sizzling bass and guitar lines, intriguing drum rolls, and fusion of male and female vocals. From the first listen, you can feel that this group of 6 are special to the music scene. They are not overly dramatic, yet they leave a mark on you. They do not scream and clamor, yet their voices are heard.

"La Famiglia" (the family) is what they call all who enter their world, and it is a most accurate assessment not only of how they relate to their followers, but how they treat each other. I have been to their shows all over the world, and each time I am there, I feel like I am being held in an embrace of sorts. Their music is warm, inviting, and exciting. And if you were fortunate enough to see them on either the Jaegermeister Tour or the Hottest Chicks in Metal Tour, you know what I am talking about.

They are the 'touchable' band - the band that comes out before and after the show, and showers you with hugs, kisses, and reminds you of how happy they are to see you again. Hence, "La Famiglia".

Their newest release, Karmacode, is a journey into spiritual curiousity, self-introspection, and philosophical wonder. Each track on the album introduces you to another facet of their lives. Their lyrics based upon their experiences are not unique and are highly applicable to us all.

Not too hard, not too soft, just right. Good for driving, for making love, for reading, for exercising. Their lyrics are clean. And true to form, they have included a song in Italian (which are always my favorites). Even though listeners may not understand the Italian lyrics, the sheer beauty of the language to music is worth listening to.

Their take on "Enjoy the Silence" is refreshing and light, but still maintains the darm and ethereal integrity of the original release by Depeche Mode.

Well worth a listen!

After making a mockery of the score to Terminator 3 and acknowledging Brad Fiedel's great theme only once in a Casio Midi-file quality track over the closing credits, you really have to wonder why Fox would give the scoring duties of LFODH to Marco Beltrami. With Michael Kamen no longer with us there are a number of better composers who could have made this score something special. As it is, it's just competent.

Beltrami only uses Kamen's fourth most reoccurring motif from the original film and uses a tiny bit of score from Die Hard 2...and that's it. The rest is all his work and it's just the usual action bombastics without a hint of class or anything memorable. What about all those cool signature cues from the previous films, such as McClane making the bomb to throw down the elevator shaft, McClane spying on Hans and Takagi, the rooftop fight, the computers room shootout, the runway hatch, the ejector seat, the wing fight and that brilliant cue where Hans falls to his death? Where are all these? All Beltrami offers us is generic action stuff which works fine but is nothing memorable.

If Chris Young, Alan Silvestri, Debbie Wiseman, Bruce Broughton or Craig Armstrong were given this movie to score then you can better your bottom dollar it would have been brilliant. As it is, it's is merely a workable score that will be forgotten very quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Best Action Movie of the Summer 2007!!!!.......2007-06-27

I know this is for the audio cd, but I couldn't find a space to say something about the movie. Just got back from a midnight showing and it was the best expierience. This movie has it all and the action is just great. Its really worth the ten bucks. This isn't no costume or pirate crap. This is the real deal. Can't wait till the dvd comes out and we can see the unrated version!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Buenas Canciones malos Arreglos.......2007-05-09

I am a "Tito Nieves" fan i think he is a great salsa singer. But lately his musical productions are not considered the best in my opinion. His most recent falls in the same catagory, not impressed at all. I heard it once and i haven't heard it again. I am losing the anticipation when i hear he's coming out with a new recording. In my opinion he must do some thing better than what he's doing now. "Tito don't forget the TRUE SALSEROS.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "You're only as good as the people you surround yourself with".......2007-07-15

On the intro to Marco Polo's 2007 album "Port Authority," he announces "They say you're only as good as the people you surround yourself with...and that I do believe, you know what I mean?" This statement proves much more ironic than Marco knows.

Before buying this album, I was only vaguely familiar with the Toronto producer, mostly from his work with Masta Ace on A Long Hot Summer. The incredible list of guest rappers made me want this album. From a lyrical standpoint, this would be a producer's dream, having such legends as Large Professor, Masta Ace, Sadat X, O.C., Ed O.G., and A.G., as well as young underground rappers like Kardinal Offishall, Kev Brown, Ken Starr, and Wordsworth, on a debut album. As you'd expect, they don't bring their absolute bests, because these are all guest appearances, but you couldn't ask for any more from these guys. They bring clever lyricism and concepts to an album, and in that respect it brings back memories of these type of dream-team collaborations from the nineties.

Problem is, Marco doesn't make the kind of show-stealing beats that would normally warrant a producer's solo album. When a producer makes a solo album, I'm expecting the type of grabbing, show-stopping production like I've seen on Pete Rock, Jay Dee, No I.D., and DJ Jazzy Jeff's solo releases. On those producers' albums, they bring the same kind of big-name collaborators, but the spotlight never leaves the production. This is not the case on "Port Authority." Marco Polo doesn't really wow you with any beats here. There are some good beats, but not too many great ones. Too often, his beats are very repetitive, electronic, sparse, and even boring. There is also some definite filler material, on a tracklist that is a lengthy 18 tracks long, and almost every track is well over four minutes. It's too long. He gets outshined by the MCs on almost every song, and while it's expecting a lot for a young producer to stack up with legends, it's quite noticeable. The lack of creative and interesting beats is a problem.

After the intro, the album begins with the solid "Get Busy," a Copywrite collabo with a beat that sounds early Wu-Tang-esque, with winding violins and piano. I was excited to hear O.C. on "Marquee." While the beat's a little too repetitive, O.C. does a nice job like always and I like this song. A typically energetic Kardinal Offishall spits some nice verses on "War," but once again, I feel like Marco gets outshined on this track, the beat is pretty average. I like the single "Nostalgia" with the legendary Masta Ace. The beat to this song sounds just like the beat to the Masta Ace song "Soda & Soap" from A Long Hot Summer, but Ace's verses set this one apart, this song is very memorable. Wordsworth shows up for the okay "Wrong One," and the posse cut "Low Budget" is so called for its bare-bones beat, not the type you'd hope for on a producer's album, although the verses are all clever. I like Jo Jo Pellegrino's spot "Speak Softly," although it doesn't really stand out. Veteran Ed O.G. raps over a boring beat on "Time & Place," but his raps are substantial. One of my favorite rappers, Large Professor, shows up for "The Radar." His lines and concept is great, which is why I wish the beat was better, it's very average and forgettable. I had never heard of Jaysaun before "All My Love," but after hearing him here I know he is a rapper I will be looking out for in the future, because he provides the best guest appearance on the whole album. He tells an insightful and inspired story of a poor upbringing and struggles as a young biracial man. Unfortunately, I was not feeling this beat at all, the instrumentals sound uneasy and the vocal sample doesn't fit, the beat drags this song down a lot. "Lay It Down" is weak, a very repetitive and boring beat covered by monotonous verses from Rock Marciano. "Go Around" is by far the best song on the album. This has easily the best beat, a laidback, jazzy, and horn-driven number, and Buckshot's verses and great hook make this song very nice. Kool G Rap and D.V. Alias Khryst appear on the frenetic "Hood Tales," a pretty good song, and "Heat" featuring Supastition is also pretty nice. A very impressive crew of Brand Nubian's Sadat X, D.I.T.C.'s A.G., and the Beatnuts' JuJu rap on the decent "Rollin'." The beat on "For the Future" is creative, using a harp as the main instrumental. The album closes with "Relax," which is a cover of A Tribe Called Quest's classic "Electric Relaxation." As much as I love the original, truly one of my favorite songs, I have a hard time really loving this one because Marco didn't tweak the beat at all, nor did J. Davey significantly alter the lyrics. Nevertheless, it's hard to go too wrong when working on a classic of "Electric Relaxation"'s level, so it's a nice end to the album.

"Port Authority" impressed me in a way I didn't expect. Buying this, I was hoping for a producer's showcase, but this is definitely more of a rapper's show than the producer's. The star-studded guest list of legendary rappers makes for some good fun, but Marco's beats don't always. Marco is a solid producer, and I think he will continue to have a career as a low-profile beatmaker making music with talented lyricists. To join the company of the best producers in the biz, he will have to show more than he shows on "Port Authority." I recommend this album only to the more intense hip hop fans, because they will no doubt love hearing verses from O.C., Large Professor, Ed O.G., Masta Ace, and the other veteran rappers that grace Marco's beats, and the younger underground cats also do a nice job on the mic. But if you're looking a producer's showcase that features a similar guestlist, I'd steer you towards DJ Jazzy Jeff's recent release, The Return of the Magnificent, a really great and complete album with a similar concept.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-07-07

overall this is an OK album
the beats are sicks but there are several skippable songs

5 out of 5 stars Best Album of 2007.......2007-07-03

You remember when you got that "feel"? You know the one where you were FLOORED when you heard an album. This is the album of 2007 that has given me that feeling. I was sold when I heard the Nostalgia / War 12" single; I knew this album was going to be dope. It didn't let me down. While the Masta Ace "Nostalgia" cut stands out as the feel good joint of the year, don't sleep on Large Professor's "The Radar", Supastition's "Heat", Kardinal Offishall's "War", Buckshot's "Go Around", and the sleeper pick, Jaysaun's "All My Love".

If you have lost faith in hip hop or are just looking for a slamming album, grab this one. It will make you remember why you liked the music in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars IN MY TOP 10 - DOPEST ALBUMS OF 2007.......2007-07-01

MARCO POLO COMES CORRECT ON HIS DEBUT LP "PORT AUTHORITY". EACH ONE OF THE BEATS ON THIS ALBUM HITS HARD AND GETS RIGHT TO THE POINT. "NOSTALGIA" WITH MASTA ACE IS ABSOLUTELY TIMELESS, CLASSIC BEAT, AND SPEAK SOFTLY NOW, HAS A GREAT SAMPLE TO RIDE OUT TOO. OVERALL ITS JUST A FLAT OUT GREAT REAL HIPHOP ALBUM THAT U CAN PLAY ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND FEET LIKE U GOT 100 PERCENT OF YOUR MONEY'S WORTH AT THE END.

GREAT JOB MARCO!

4 out of 5 stars "Fill the Hole in Your Heart That is Missin'".......2007-06-21

I just want to clarify a couple things. I give this album a 4.5 because I don't like handing out fives like everyone else on this site. Also, it takes a lot for me to review an album, this is only my 2nd (check the resume), but when I heard this tape, I went nuts.

I first heard of MP back on Boot Camp's "The Last Stand", the track "He Gave His Life" was straight up banging. When I saw that MP was putting out a joint I check it out, when I saw that Masta Ace, OC, Kool G, & Kardinal (too name a few) were up on it, I almost cracked the case to get to the disc.

Lets remember MP is just a producer so we have to analyze this cd from a beat perspective. In the source they say a rapper has to do something new to get five mics. Well MP finds a great blend of soul with cuts. Don't get me wrong DJ Premier is one of the best to ever do it, but he just cuts, 9th is also one of my favorites, but he just brings straight soul. MP brings both, for that reason you gotta peep this cat. "Yeah I said it", I mentioned this new producer in the same sentence as 9th and Premier, that is what I think of him (or at least with the same potential). The real heads who understand my language are in their car already on the way to their local record shop.

The MCs on this album kill! OC and Masta Ace are two of the most underrated in the game, but my favorite is "All My Love" ft. Jayshaun. His first verse is one of the best I have heard in the last 5 years and believe the kid when I say I have listen to a lot of albums. So at this point I give you a quotable, but instead I am going to leave you hanging. Go cop this, the cat is a carnivore!

5 out of 5 stars Great Marco compilation CD........2007-06-10

But then again, can't expect nothing but greatnest from El Buki. These are all his hits since he left Los Bukis. Nothing but the best. Great compilation if you don't already own the rest of his CDs. I probably wont buy it just cuz i own everyone of his cds since he came out with Los Bukis which are 23 (Not counting compilations). Buy it now!!!

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

Very good value.

I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.
