People who gave this cd one or two stars obviously never knew what Gatecrasher was about. The whole point of National Anthems is not to showcase great mixing skills, or long intricately composed songs. These were the songs that were mashing 'Crasher kids' brains into a pulp back then. They are only a taste of what these songs were, and it was done like that on purpose in order to be able to fit all the songs in two cds. If you dont own any other Gatecrasher CD then obviously you are going to think the cd stinks, but if you are a fan of late 90's and early 00's trance/house like I am, you'll know what the cd is about. Tracks like Dooms Night, Toca's Miracle, Scorchio, Universal Nation, Wizards of the Sonic, (i could go on forever) make National Anthems a great addition to your cd collection, but only if you understand what its about...

Breast milk for the musical infant........2006-02-10

How else can I begin, but by saying that if it were not for this album, I may never have discovered trance, or electronic dance music in general. My brother bought it four years ago, and the moment I heard Sander Kleinenberg's "My Lexicon" I was convinced I had discovered something truly amazing. The first eight tracks on disc two [except the Yothu Yindi Track] are phenomenal. In fact, there are so many excellent tracks among the forty-four here that you must be wondering why I gave "National Anthems" only two stars. Track length. Forty four tracks over two discs? Each track is only given about three or four minutes to wind up, and then is faded out into another track. This album could be considered a 'sampler' of sorts, in that we only get to hear short segments of tracks, and are ultimately deprived of the true experience we would otherwise be having if Gatecrasher were not so eager to fit every little track they could find on this album.
As an introduction to electronic music, this album was some pretty decent breast milk, but this reviewer quickly grew hungry for more solid food.

Well, you know, I REALLY liked this CD-er CDs! The songs are so beautiful and reach almost an emotional level. They are inspiring, easy to dance to, energizing, and...just really beautiful!:)

The worst trance collection I have ever bought!.......2001-10-22

I own maybe 20 discs, which 19 of them are trance. This is simply the worst collection i have bought. I was disapointed from the start all the way to the finish. It seemed i was listening to one song, every track seemed to be exactly as the previous. This is not trance, this is early 90's house music (the whole song is made of 3 beats, with absolutly no rythem, none what so ever, and dont be fooled by the famous names on the disc, like moby - natural blues you cant recognize it, it is a totaly different song with a 3 second sample of the original). Dont wast your money on this crap, get something you can acctually listen to. the only thing good about this disc is its cover design. by the way i am seling my copy(...)

Bad reviews do unjustice to this CD.......2001-07-31

I have to disagree with some of the reviews here. I understand the points they are trying to make, but they forget that there is some great music on this CD. A lot of the remixes I find interesting and the mixing itself maybe more computer generated than like a Sasha or P.Van Dyk mix, but nonetheless flawless. Someone has to operate the computers too, don't they? I find this CD innovative using some classics. Some of the song selections would cause me to rate this 4.5 instead of 5, but because of the other bad reviews I will round it up, instead of down. This CD belongs in every collection.
