Product Description
The Gyume Tantric College and its ritual musical tradition were founded in Lhasa, Tibet in 1433 by Je Tzong Sherab Senge. For over 500 years, the monks at this monastery have been chanting using a special "one voice chording" technique which gives each monk the ability to chant three-note major chords. This special technique requires years of vocal training and deep concentration. By creating a deep bass note, the Monks are able to generate a number of other tones, called harmonics. These harmonics, while part of the natural spectrum of sound, are normally sounded by the monks, they evoke awe and reverence, transfixing the mind of the listener as well as the chanter. This is the first studio recording of the Gyume Monks, recorded in 1986.

tibetan chordal/microtonal singing is an incredibly cosmic event one has to experience because it goes beyond mere description and ratings. the musical tones generated from deep within these maestros is mystical and quite healing on a cellular level, which is just one of the reasons creative and healing persons have been utilizing tibetan sounds for some time now. the sounds on this disc go directly to one's energy centers and penetrate the molecular core of one's etheric vehicle. there have been reports of astral travel using these sound meditations and the "vocals" intoned here are as powerful and transcendent as any i've heard in my large collection of tibetan music. highly recommended for healing, transcendence, acceptance and a deep experience of inner joy and peace.

I bought this recording a few years ago after hearing about it on National Public Radio. The monks vocal abilities are outstanding, it is truly ethereal. As Thupten Nyandak, Assistant Director of the monastery says: `It is a sound offering to whom we are praying', and a wonderful offering to the human listener.

"Awsome" is literally how you would describe the Tibetan ritual musics on this record, but then that word doesn't even come close. At times you can actually visualize the skull cracking open. "Auspicious Sounds Of Instruments In Nine Repetitions" in particuar is just amazing. It's probably where everything comes to a boil. Through the music you can really visualize how connected the Dip Tse Chok Ling monks are to various netherworlds. The monks use a wide range of instruments from the kangling(thighbone trumpet) and conchs to the monstrous longhorns. The percussion is quite intense as well, sounding like all manner of chaos descending in one fell plummet. This is not your typical world/new age music. This is intense, dissonant and unpredictable drone music for purposes of magick ritual. By the way it lurches one minute and soars the next, it's almost an entity unto itself.

Free spirit and prayer for Tibet.......2002-09-10

These chants were new to me and their impact was to release that spirit lever, (wherever it is,) whereby I entered almost instantly a meditative state. This was a simple process that did not include suffering through either boredom or 'work.'

I have not been this susceptible since I first attended Michael Harner's workshops and later listened to his drumming tapes. For some mysterious reason, there are some 'Om' recordings that make me incredibly anxious! Probably Freudian backlash. These recordings however generated a multiphonic peace through technical clarity. The chants are truly jewels of prayer and as such are gifts to your own spiritual work but also the work for world peace. Exiled now in Dharmasala near his holiness the Dalai Lama, the monks paid for a new monastery and education programs through tours and recordings. Micky Hart produced this offering. The liner is both beautiful and informative.

Return of the Gyoto Monks.......2002-06-23

Since I have been buying their CD's, I have not been truly disappointed by the Gyoto Monks. This is another excellent chant CD to add to your collection. My only complaint is that after listening to their past two albums (which I listen to every night as part of my meditation regimen), I've noticed that they've been singing 2-3 particular chants the whole time and each CD is a variation (albeit beautiful) on each one. After more than a 1500 years of Tibetan chanting I think there are more chants than just three! Ah well, maybe this shows that the East is still reluctant to divulge much of their religions to the "round-eyed barbarians of the West" still to this day. Also, many chants apparently are too sacred for mere laymen so we may never get to hear them all. We'll have to wait and see whether the Gyoto Monks change their tune in the upcoming CD,s which I look forward to greatly. I recommend this CD wholeheartedly, I think its my favorite chant from these guys CD thus far. Enjoy! :)

this is a very powerful little cd. i've noticed that playing it will raise the vibrations of the space its played in. also, my reiki friends and i discovered (for reasons we do not yet understand) that using this as background music while sending reiki distantly, strengthens the energy and the channel. something synergistic happens........and its quite profound.

All proceeds from sales go to benefit the monks of the Gyume monastery. Founded over 500 years ago, the monks at this monastery have been chanting using a special "one voice chording" technique, which gives each monk the ability to chant three-note major chords. This special technique, which requires years of vocal training and deep concentration, evokes awe and reverence, transfixing the mind of the listener as well as the chanter. This historic CD represents the first time monks from this auspicious tantric college were recorded in a modern recording studio. The two thirty-minute mystical mantras are profoundly spiritual rituals for transformation. "Guhyasamja" is a tantra of self-initiation, and "Kalarupa" is an invocation to the Dharma Protector associated with the Gyume Monastery. Produced by Jonathan Goldman, whose Tibetan Master Chants by Lama Tashi was nominated for a 2006 Grammy for Best Traditional World Music. I have not read much about the members of Xumantra or their artistic aims, but fortunately, their music pretty much seems to speak for itself. This is not so much an album as it is a headspace- created by gongs, bells, bowls, and other metallic implements used in meditation and ritual in the east- which will serve to relax and center you, no matter what your beliefs may be. Buy this album, buy some incense (I recommend Nag Champa), turn out the lights, and just EXIST in the music, if you have the courage. This is not party music, and it is not 'easy listening'.. it is simply sculpted sound with magnificent power and scope. And yet it is extremely minimalistic. A person conditioned by commercial radio and television might call it boring, but the fact that Xumantra doesn't call to mind the flashing lights and flickering images of our modern world only adds to their appeal. If you like this, you may also want to look into the works of Steve Roach, Robert Rich, percussionists like Jim McGrath and tuvan singers like Jim Cole (Colescence).

INCREDIBLE!!!!!.......2003-10-23

I would not have believed this if it hadn't happened to me!
The first time I experienced the Shartse Monks I had no idea what to expect. I was having major problems with my thyroid and also had Strep Throat! During the first chant (rites for purification & invocation of the Medicine Buddha) I tingled all over, when the second chant (self-generation of the Medicine Buddha) began, my head started moving involuntarily, rolling from side to side. This continued throughout the entire chant. By the time they had completed the final chant (purification & blessing of the environment) I was amazed!! I felt absolutely wonderful!!!! I owned this tape & when I lost it some time back, I was devistated. I am excited to say I have just purchased the CD and can't wait for it to arrive!
